5 Things To Start Doing in 2015

It's that time of the year again, when many will be determined to set goals and follow them. Goals are good, systems are better. Setting goals is like drawing a map. Systems make you traverse the trails and actually make progress instead of just planning progress. I am making a list of 5 things you should start doing in 2015. Everyone loves lists these days, so it just seems like the right thing to do. This is a very simple list.
Here's 5 things you should start doing in 2015:
1. Get Truth Tellers
We all need people who will just be honest with us and give us a skosh of truth. These are some of the most powerful people in our lives because they see all the stuff behind the curtain and still love us. If it's the truth that sets you free, then we must have truth tellers in our life or we will live in captivity. These are people who are not romanticized with how prophetic, entrepreneurial, or whatever else we may be. They can see through it all to the real us and actually want to still hang out. Who's in your inner circle? Who is speaking into your life and even more importantly, why? If you can't answer the why question, then you've got to recalibrate some things. It's been said we are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with. Eeyores shouldn't be in our inner circle. I am not talking about creating a clique in your life. This is about who you drop down the drawbridge for and has access to speak into the depths of who you are. If they aren't concerned with your heart, then move them out of that circle into another that has less influence in your life. Your future will thank you.
2. Meaty Meditation
Yes meditation. The devil knows scripture quite well and would love for you to be Biblically illiterate. That way when he comes as the father of lies talking out his rear we won't know the difference between what he is saying and what is actually true. This year find space to meditate on scripture. Plant seeds today so you have a truth harvest tomorrow. Not just blaze through a one-year Bible reading marathon so you can check that off our bucket list. Try this, pick a passage in the Bible and read it, then pray in tongues for a few minutes and read it again. Finally, just listen. This is a discipline when we live in a world of constant white noise. You'll be surprised the level of wisdom and revelation that is released.
3. Belly Gut Laughing
Laughter really is good, delicious medicine. Life would be incredibly boring if laughter were non-existent. Need therapy in your life- laugh. I mean laugh hard, you know, the kind where you're getting a 6-pack of abs while laughing. It may start with you making yourself laugh. No joke. Look at the mirror on your medicine cabinet and start laughing and you'll probably replace some of the medicine behind the mirror.
4. Read Outside Your Genre
Find some books that are outside the genre you would normally read. Read things no one else seems to be reading. Find material that challenges previous mindsets about things and catch a glimpse of a different perspective. Here's an even better idea: go to the bookstore or Library and ask God to show you a book that you should read.
5. Starve Negativity
Let's face it, there's a plethora of negativity flowing in all streams of society. It doesn't take long to see and hear the small-minded and orphan sounds and sights of negative thinking. DON'T make any time for negative people in your life nor negative influences. If what you're spending your time watching/reading/etc. carries a Debby downer attitude. Starve it out. If you don't it will all starve out your joy. I always say that I will love anyone but I will not spend my time with just anyone.
This is in no way an exhaustive list of the only things we need to do in 2015, but it's a good start towards a good year.

God's Will II: Prophetic Leotard Fight Scenes

1 Timothy 1:18- "This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight,"
After a lot of response from my last blog, I decided to do a part II.
We humans tend to think in linear ways. Our desire is to get from A to B within the shortest route possible. When we receive prophetic words we also want to arrive at the fulfillment of those words yesterday or at the most tomorrow. When God speaks He wants to bring adjustment, renewal, restoration, encouragement, correction, redirection...and the list goes on.
All He asks for is a response. Many Christians place their sole focus on process. I hear it all the time. "Yeah, I am just in my process right now. Well, I have some news for you...it's not YOUR process. God is saying, "it's OUR process. Our focus isn't the process, it's His Presence. If I delve into His presence the process will unfold.
Again, many of us are thinking in terms of the end result. God is thinking in terms of the relationship and the journey to fulfillment. He wants us to get to our destiny even more than we do. But our linear thinking will not reach the outcome because it cannot commit our heart to His Presence. Straight lines don't work on His trails.
I've found many times when I speak places that people want a magical prophetic word that will unleash all the answers to their life. When in reality they are wanting a shortcut. One time a woman asked for a prophetic word. So, I asked Holy Spirit and He said, "she doesn't need a word, she needs to obey". Well, that didn't go over to lovely. What this person wanted was a quick fix to their lack of obedience. Hello James 1:22-24. When we hear without doing anything about what we are hearing, we are delusional. Relationship cannot be imparted and no prophetic word can replace abiding in Him. I cannot impart to you my relationship with God. As life increases, our fellowship with Him needs to also increase. Our focus is the destination. The Holy Spirit's focus is transformation. He wants to meander down the trail with us, not sprint.
Prophecy is history in advance. God is the One who was, is and is to come. This means that God lives in the past, present, and future at the same time, thus He is always on time because He is outside of time. This is why God isn't too concerned with timing. He wants relationship. When God speaks through someone and they deliver a prophetic word it's God relaying in the present what was discovered in the future. It connects our present with His future. Part of the unpacking of prophetic words is discovering and aligning ourselves with God's view of us both in the present and the future. Then Jesus stands in the gap (Hebrews 7:25) interceding for us between our present and future. He desires to pull them together. That will require time, participation, and some fight.
Now when prophetic words come our way there is an attraction that takes place. Darkness becomes aware of things they don't want you to be aware of. We are all born into a war...read Revelation 12. Jesus' birth was no silent night. Prophetic words are some of the weapons we can use. This means we need to participate with the prophecies we receive. I had received words about writing books. I wasn't waiting for one day when my hand uncontrollably started writing under the power of the Holy Spirit. No, I started writing by using my hands and mind. I encourage you to record, write down every prophetic word you get. Then go back to them...then again. Remind yourself of what He is saying about your future. Use everyone of those words as a sword, javelin, dagger, landmine...whatever...to fight for your future history to unfold. It will not peacefully unravel. Not without a fight.
There will be times when it feels like you are living in a divine tension. This is a space where you have a bunch of prophetic words but your circumstances communicate the opposite. What are you going to do? We cannot learn patience through acceleration, it can only be learned by persistence. Our perseverance is to be joyful (Colossians 1:11), otherwise, we won't learn endurance. Endurance (finding our stride) can only be achieved by moving IN HIM. Our oneness is the key to the stride.
He wants us to come into an upgrade. Adjustments are needed to walk into promotion. When we are Presence-focused, we cooperate with who God is shaping us to become. This is the person He sees within the prophetic words. It is then that the outcome is being drawn towards us like a freight train. Nothing in hell will stop it. But, our heads can.
Remember we are hidden in Christ. There is no safer place in all the multi-verse. When darkness comes spewing it's lies, just say something like this, "would you like to come into the One in whom I am hidden and do battle?" Didn't think so. Now back off defeated and triumphed over disembodied spirits.
Pick up all the weapons (prophetic words) you have received and wield them with confidence. This confidence is the consequence of abiding in Him. The future is always bright. God is light. The future will always have love. God is love. Align your thoughts and sight with His and things will brighten up quite nicely.

God's Will: Safari Hunt or Lap Dance

I have to admit that when I would think of being in God's will, it would be like the ever elusive and yet to be discovered species in the rain forest. All the sermons I would hear didn't help me either on the topic. Questions in the church bulletin in Comic Sans font asking, "Are You in God's Will?, Have You Missed His Will?". I wish I was joking, but alas, I am not. What I was learning about God's will was that it was much like a safari hunt. You would head out for the day and hopefully see the mammal of choice race across the desert plain. BUT, there was a chance you wouldn't see that mammal. Sure, the other scenery is grand and all...but it's the mammal you wanted to see.
In 2005 Cecilee and I sensed very strongly that we were to move. At the time, we were in Salt Lake City where we had been doing ministry since 1997. We both knew we were supposed to leave, but what we were supposed to do...that was an entirely different beast all together (insert elusive species in the rain forest). Being the dreamer that I am, moving became another mountain to scale...another horizon to blast forth into.
We prayed...prayed some more. Read books about prayer. Then prayed some more. Did I mention prayer? We decided we would pioneer another campus ministry at UC Santa Cruz. Everyone we talked to emphasized how it would be such a "great fit" for Cecilee and I. We visited the campus and liked the proximity to the ocean. There was no real strong leading to go there...it was just an open opportunity. So, I made a website, missionary business cards, mailed out lots of letters asking for support, and started to speak in churches about this new endeavor.
In June 2005 we moved to Sacramento to stay with my gracious in-laws who allowed us to move into their new home while we figured out where we would live in Santa Cruz. After several trips we found a condo that was about the ONLY place we could afford, which was still insanity. We made an offer, it was accepted, we signed the papers, and then headed back to Sacramento to start planning our move.
We drove back to Sacramento after the deal was sealed. Then about halfway home something started to happen that has never happened to me. My body began to shake (not a Holy Spirit manifestation, although that has taken place many times). No, this was much different. My brain was going crazy and I couldn't think clearly. It was so bad I had to pull to the side of the road. I got out of the car and was bent over on side of the freeway. It felt like my world was crumbling...it seemed like a nervous breakdown.
Cecilee wondered if I was going to make it and I could tell she was quite concerned since she had never seen me this way. I blurted out, "we cannot move to Santa Cruz...we are not supposed to move to Santa Cruz!". I probably sounded like a lunatic. As the words flung out of my mouth they brought no relief. The non-clarity brain action and shaking only got worse.
In that moment all sides of reality were closing in on me and my only thought was did I miss God's will? Have I not heard God correctly? What about all the missionary cards, the website? I spoke in churches about this endeavor for crying out loud. People will think we are delusional.
That night I called a good friend and asked him to pray. He called me the next morning and said he had a dream (which he rarely remembers his dreams). In the dream God said a door would open tomorrow. We had scheduled a meeting with friends Curt and Kelly Harlow a couple weeks prior to talk about UC Santa Cruz.
We went into the meeting trying to think of how we could articulate this utter disaster of hearing God. Once we got there we were just honest. Then the door opened. I won't go into details of that but just to suffice it to say that it was what we were supposed to do. We stayed in Sacramento to help with what was called West Coast Chi Alpha.
That season was rough and beautiful unpacking all this God's will stuff. It was in that place of tension I realized that the will of God isn't so much functional...it's relational. It's incredibly difficult to mess up the will of God. You have to work overtime to even try to make that happen. I was so busy looking for the external "plan" of God in the bushes and not realizing He was holding my hand walking into those very bushes.
I really felt like the Holy Spirit wanted me to write this story for someone. To know that even if we miss it God can get us on the path of His destiny, which is ours together. We are one. It's not that God moves because He is constant. It's that IN HIM we move and have our being.
The funny thing is I wouldn't have moved to Sacramento if that was the door. But, through what I perceived to be a major failure in catching God's will, He got us to where we were exactly supposed to be. We wouldn't be in San Diego if it were not for that season in Sacramento and we wouldn't have two of our staff either.
His will isn't a safari hunt. It's a lap dance...yes lap dance. Not the erotic dance at a seedy strip bar. I am talking about a child dancing on their Fathers lap. Playfulness. It's the safest place in all of creation. Having the heart of a child knowing that whatever is ahead has already been concluded in His head. No need to worry...just dance. Sonship is the ship from which all other ships flow...relationship, stewardship, fellowship, etc. The Holy Spirit can blow and His winds will carry us to the destination. God isn't focused on destination, He's focused on relationship. It's not about point A and point B. it's about the journey getting there. All the conversations, doubts, victories, and everything in between.
So, be a like a child...ask questions and play. Let your curiosity run wild as you explore all He is and all He's done. With that in your gaze you'll get lost in Him and not worry about getting lost outside.

Childlike Kingdom

This past weekend I was with some of my most favorite people on the planet Shannon and Nancy Schreyer. They pastor a church called God's Place in Ogden, UT. It's a fun place to speak and always feels like family.
I spoke there Friday night, Saturday morning and Sunday morning. So much goodness happened, but I want to take a moment to highlight Sunday morning. I spoke on some interesting topics that I will not get into here, but for many that attended, it was outside their box and highlighted the fact that there is always more to encounter, discover and become aware of in the Kingdom.
Towards the end of the gathering I sensed Holy Spirit wanted to do something fun. Yes, fun on a Sunday morning. I am not talking a "clap offering" or a "Jericho shout". A full immersion in childlike fun was the order of the morning. A good friend of mine, Elizabeth Reisinger was with us here at UCSD in April to speak. At then end of the service she had anyone who was sick to raise their hand and then people nearby to ask Holy Spirit what's something childlike to do that would open up the healing. One guy heard "play tag" and they did and the person's migraine was healed among others.
So I did this in Ogden, UT. One guy who had a serious shoulder issue was healed. The person that prayed for him heard "hopscotch". So, this guy who was very reluctant jumped a few feet in a classic schoolyard hopscotch motion. He was instantly healed and tripping out. Another person was twirling with another. Mind you, these were people who you could tell would normally not be twirling in any setting let alone in front of the entire church. As the guy twirled his allergies left and all the pain in his feet was gone.
Then I saw a man twirling around in the crowd. At the end he came running up and told us how he took his hearing aids out. Without them he cannot hear ANYTHING. He was now hearing EVERYTHING without them. Totally healed. A man in the back who hadn't been in church for two years was touched. He was on crutches due to a botched knee surgery and his knee wasn't healing. Well, it did that morning and he was besides himself in tears at the goodness of God. I am pretty sure he'll be back.
My two children Eowyn and Liam have taught me more about the Kingdom than most adults. We tend to forget we are called the children of God not the adults of God. There are many adults that are childish but not childlike. Awe, wonder, curiosity, innocence; these are just a few of the words that describe the tapestry of a child. The cares and affairs of this world have a way of shutting down our awareness. Burdens we were never intended to carry. We are to have an awareness that keeps our heads in the clouds. Colossians 3 talks of keeping our minds set on what's above. We are from above and not beneath, so we might as well think that way.
We take ourselves way too serious sometimes. I love Jesus' interactions with children. Once some kids were playing all over Jesus and the disciples are up in a religious frenzy and Jesus defends the kids. Those children wouldn't have been sitting piously with folded legs in criss cross applesauce formation. They surely wouldn't have been quietly humming How Great Thou Art either. Kids are loud. They bounce, roll, scream, and laugh. This was happening with and ON Jesus. He loved it and more importantly...them. Then there's the time when kids are in the temple getting their worship on. Again, religiously minded folks are in a tizzy. How dare these children increase the decibel level in the temple of all places. It's holy...sacred...somber. Jesus again stands up for the kids and goes even further to state that it's THEIR praise silencing the enemy.
Let's keep re-learning how to be like a child. Ask God questions...lots of questions. This is a daily activity of all children. They ask questions about all things at all times. I find God enjoys my questions because I am remaining like a kiddo with my Father. Ask the Father today how you can be more childlike and less adult-like in your relationship with Him. You may be surprised what He says to do. Perhaps you'll find yourself twirling around as the fear of man falls off and the power of God manifests.

Trans-dimensional and Transfiguring Beings

You may read that title and imagine pale green martian life forms waddling like penguins and lacking depth perception. I will be honest, I am a fan of sci-fi glory. ET was literally the first movie I ever saw in the movie theater as a child. Had nightmares afterwards but perhaps that was also the 3 gallons of butter slathered on the popcorn. The movies usually have a similar plot; aliens are a bit on edge and have some pent up angst and are looking to destroy some things. Urban areas seem to be their liking. You never see them focused on rural areas igniting small farms. Anyways, I digress and beam back up to the reality of what the title of this blog is all about.
In Christ, we are quite unique. You see, we share in the divine nature of Christ (2 Peter 1:4). Key word "divine". Our old operating system was not tweaked nor did it receive an update like Old Nature 7.77.7. It was obliterated and we were given a NEW operating system called a divine nature. It's something not even angels have.
We are also seated with Christ right NOW in the heavenly realms...notice the "s" at the end of realm (Ephesians 2:6). Our spirit man, which is the truest part of us is in heaven AND Earth at the same time. That's called being "trans-dimensional". Living in first person is to live from our spirit man in Christ. Where our reality is victory and our inheritance is abundance. You go to heaven when you die right? So when did you die? Romans 6 is a delicious feast that makes it abundantly clear we already died WITH Christ, thus, we are in heaven right NOW. Hello trans-dimensional being. It's easy to bring heaven to Earth when you are in both places at the same time.
Then there's the whole transfiguration deal. We are to be "transformed" by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12). Where is your mind? In your head? Nope..."as a man THINKS in his HEART so is he" (Proverbs 23:7). Your mind tells your brain what is true and your brain establishes mindsets and patterns according to the thoughts in your mind (heart), which then become behavioral patterns. Renew the mind and EVERYTHING changes...thus, transformation. Although the word is actually "transfiguration". It's the word used of Jesus when transfigured on the mountain. It's when His face was releasing quite the lighting show. The power of the Holy Spirit helps us renew our minds so that our flesh is transfigured. This means there is literally a transforming, a morphing of us at every level: physiologically, mentally, cellular, sub atomic, and even quantum. Mind renewal isn't just reciting some magical verses and calling it a day. It's the utter transfiguring of all the original wiring, patterns, and deeply embedded seeds (thoughts) all the way to the DNA.
Next time you don't feel that special. Remind your mind that right now you are seated with Christ (trans-dimensional) and you're ascending (faith to faith, glory to glory, grace to grace, strength to strength) into His realms as you are being transfigured by the renewing of your mind. Then tell your feelings the truth that yes you are special. It doesn't glorify the artist to demean the artwork...hello Ephesians 2:10.
Thoughts matter. Always have and always will. Every thought is a seed and we are planting seeds all day every day. If you don't like the produce from your garden, then it's probably time for some different thoughts.
