observation: among a certain subset of tumblr users, the term “blorbo” has become unchic, but the concept it describes is still important; and so it has been replaced with “The Character”

I keep seeing this contradictory argument in articles discussing the phenomenon of "fake indigenous" people where it is argued that having found an indigenous ancestor doesn't mean you can claim indigeniety, yet at the same time calling for indigenous people to reclaim the culture that they've become estranged from generationally.
So which is it? Can you claim to be indigenous if you have ancestry or not? Is there a limit of how far back that ancestry is, and if so are we using the government's model for that? Do you really want to use the legal framework of the colonizing country to define whether you and your fellows belong to your culture or not?

found out my brother had such a spectacularly bad day yesterday it's genuine comedy to me
yesterday he:
forgot his lunch at home
ordered lunch instead but misunderstood the delivery guy and accidentally sent him away with his food
got on the wrong bus after work
left his wallet behind when he switched buses to get home
like damn I'd want to crawl into a hole after all that rip sean

that guy from the Speef post probably put the double e on the new name of the character bc in Brazilian Portuguese Leonir could be some dude who lives down the street from you. I'm sure I have seen the name Leonir in the client database at my job. so the double e is kinda required to make it more Special(TM) and Fantasy Hero(TM).
I still find it terrible but hey, not my character lol
Thank you for this additional context, I hadn't know Leonir was a normal Portuguese name!

i don’t know how to explain to you people that no matter what a country’s government is like i do not and will not support the US indiscriminately bombing that country’s civilians and i don’t know why that’s a controversial take tbh

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.
Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.
So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.
Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

remember when buffy the vampire slayer made it canon that if you’re too unpopular in high school you turn invisible. and that the fbi is recruiting these invisible children to train as assassins. and then it just never comes up again

"you should use your libby for ebooks" "you shouldn't pirate your ebooks" BITCH you can do both.
Simply borrow the ebook from libby, download it as a .ascm (drm epub thing) on your computer, then run the .ascm file through a drm remover of your choice (third-party plugins in Calibre is what to do). you can then keep the drm-free .epub and return the libby loan. Boom.
Win/win/win.
You get to keep the ebook (ALSO libby usually has high-quality files. so it's better than piracy).
You're borrowing the book from the library. They get their numbers up, you're supporting the author and your library.
You're not holding up the line.

Books on Libby have started disappearing.
My friend pointed it out first, and then I started noticing too. Why would books that multiple libraries definitely, 100% had digital access to a couple of months/weeks/days ago disappear?
Amazon is getting exclusive rights to them.
Ebooks that the public library once had digital copies of are now only available through Amazon. Audible boasts on their covers about Audible-exclusive audiobooks that did not used to be Audible-exclusive. Entire series and collections are disappearing overnight.
Keep your eyes on the privatization of media and your libraries.

you really can reach a point with transgender enlightenment wherein you can attribute any bodily feature silhouette and detail to any gender regardless of typical cisgender aesthetic connotations. anything can be a man's body if the person in it is a man. anything can be a woman's body if the person in it is a woman. anything can be a genderless body if the person in it is genderless. and so on. the only thing that matters is the personhood within and whether you are willing to look and know and see it. open your eyes. keep trying until you no longer flinch or turn away in shame or anger or confusion.

imagine if they gendered you from birth and then assigned you a list of interests and personality traits even if that felt horrifically untrue for you and you hated when people did that for as long as you could remember but every time you complained about it people got confused

can we send up a quick thank you to pdf uploaders, torrent seeders, copy sharers, scanlators, fansubbers, digitizers, paywall dodgers, and various other internet archivers for making niche art and information more accessible in a media landscape where all but the most profitable mainstream are often tossed aside and left to rot

I just think that limiting what photography users can share based on what's happening in said photographs goes against the very purpose of genealogy, which is to preserve the past. You can't just pretend your ancestors didn't do things that make you personally uncomfortable, because they were people too. Also some of these rules are incredibly dumb like "oh no great-great-aunt sally's a bit disheveled in this candid photography from the 1900s we can't let ANYONE know about it"
So I'm on the FamilySearch website because I have some relatives who are too and we're all doing the family genealogy thing and the public family trees makes it easy to compare notes, and I logged back in after a long while and the terms of service updated so I'm reading through it and. wow I forgot this site was associated with the mormon church for a hot second until I saw some of the things that aren't allowed on the site: -clothing in historical photos need to be PROPERLY BUTTONED (lol) -no crossdressing (lmao) -no photos of people kissing on the mouth regardless of age or gender (???) -religious content also isn't allowed which is?? what the heck do you do if your ancestor was like, a priest or something.
