Part of their Family (Slender Mansion x Reader Chapter 2)
the poll for chapter 1 has been completed, and thus your first choice has been made! I think what I'll do going forward is put a poll at the end for chapters that call for a choice to be made... speaking of... youre going to have a VERY important choice to make at the end of this.. it appears you got too comfortable in the murder mansion notes: gn human reader, headcanon heavy, ben is not a physical entity most of the time, bro got sent to the flip phone, congrats youve decided to go play games with jeff ben and toby! nina eventually joins in with snacks! what can go wrong!... hopefully no one gets bored...!, there is indeed a choice to be made at the end of this chapter, also if anyone has any tips on how to write tobys dialogue and tics id love some pointers- i personally hc him with a stutter (caused for several reasons + we self projecting) and im mostly basing the stutter off of my own but like. yk??, not beta read we die like men word count: 7.5k cws: canon typical violence and murder, on screen violence
Tumblr media
You come to a decision as you shut off the water of the shower. The air smelled vaguely of dampness and soap. The bottles weren’t scented, at least not with anything strong that you could really pinpoint. A shiver is bitten back in the moment between stepping out of the shower’s lingering warmth and wrapping yourself in one of the soft towels folded neatly within a small cabinet. For a brief moment the thought of where to put your dirtied laundry crossed your mind. Perhaps you could ask Splendor when you were able to catch him. He could still be playing with Sally… but popping your head in to ask now felt risky. You weren’t sure if the little girl would let you go easily. You had promised her with little intent of actually keeping it… and the knowledge was starting to fully sink in as you dried yourself off.
A faint billow of steam pushed out into the room as you opened the bathroom door. The sound of life outside became simple common noise as you closed the distance to the door- the moist sound of your bare feet lightly sticking to the wooden floor below far more noticeable to you in the moment. There was nothing more that you wanted now than to be fully dry… but a towel could only do so much.
After a moment’s hesitation you sit on the edge of the bed you’ve been lended- towel still wrapped firmly around your middle to keep from soaking the sheets under you. Making your bed didn’t even occur to you this morning… doing it now seemed pointless. Maybe one day if you decide to linger here in this place for a little longer. The palms of your hands find themselves to your covered thighs and run along the fuzz of the towel. Soft and fresh- washed somewhat recently. It didn’t smell off- like how cloth sometimes got when left hanging in a closet for months untouched. In fact you don’t recall seeing any dust in the room when you first entered it… not that you were actively taking everything in at the moment.
In fact, upon a more steady mind you found that the room was actually a lot nicer than you had thought. The walls were clean and unmarked outside of the tiny holes you’ve noticed. For a fleeting moment you wondered if you’d be allowed to stick your own posters and decor up. The idea was shaken for the time being. The wallpaper was still intact. The creaks of the mansion settling and the general style of how it was built told you it was up there in age- but everything inside nearly looked brand new. The desk pushed against the wall nearby was nearly completely bare save for some faint scrapes and marks along the legs. Even with a fresh coat of paint the indents were obvious.
Someone had lived here before you, and they left their mark.
You shimmy around on the mattress- sinking slightly into its dip. Broken into from its previous owner. You wondered if they’d ever come back- and what that would mean for you if you were still hanging around.
The way you had to fight with the covers of the bed to tear them away enough to crawl under them reminded you heavily of how beds were made in hotel rooms.
A faint sigh slips through your lips, and for the first time since your life fell apart you took a deep breath. Ribs popped and cracked slightly under the shift of your lungs and muscles before falling into something more comfortable- the tension slipping itself along your spine. Another breath, another crack muffled under the veil of flesh.
It didn’t look so bad with the morning light casting itself across the room through the tiny gap of the window’s curtains… and without giving it much thought you rise back to your feet to the window and curl your fingers around the edges of the fabric. Soft but enough weight to keep the covers in place against any drafts that managed to slip through any cracks of the mansion's walls. Black seemed to be a default here.
Being on the second floor you weren’t all too concerned with anyone outside seeing you- nevermind the fact that you were greeted with thick forest right outside. The woods didn’t look so scary and disorienting in the daylight. It had felt like it would consume you before, but now…
The branches swayed gently against the wind- glistening slightly. It must have rained earlier. A hand pulls itself away from the curtain and keeps the towel clinging to your body steady as you allow your eyes to scan around the immediate area. No matter what you were going to do, you needed to at least figure out what was around you.
You hadn’t even memorized the layout of the mansion… much less been shown around properly.
Sudden movement caught your eye as a thin figure emerged from the trees. Hatchet in hand, Toby shuffled across the grass into the clearing surrounding the building. Muddied streaks now decorated his jeans- alongside grass stains and loose leaves. The other two masked men that he left with soon followed- both still in the same state as when they left.
“Not a single drop of blood,” You thought.
You’d… have to ask someone what their names were. Surely you’d be forgiven for not instantly remembering everyone.
Jeff must have been an exception…  maybe…
The towel is gripped tighter in your fingers- and nearly tightened harder when Toby suddenly lifted his face and looked directly at your window. Important parts hidden or not a mortifying wave of heat rolled over the back of your neck and shoulders- infecting it with an almost tingling feel as you scrambled to shut the curtains. You managed to rip them shut, but not before you caught Toby raising his hand to wave up at you.
You hiss softly as you release your grip and back away from the window. One could only hope that he wouldn’t bring it up later- even worse if he had decided to prod about it during your hangout with him and Jeff… if they would still have you.
Making a break for it now was probably the worst idea- Toby’s comments during breakfast rang slightly in your mind. There were people looking for you. Not just the police… and they were comfortable enough to wander in the woods… and staying inside would probably draw someone’s attention- especially now that you had properly made your presence known and part of the mansion during breakfast.
…Maybe… by the sounds of it the mansion had its own recluses hidden in its walls somewhere.
And playing with Sally now felt… a little overwhelming. Though you were sure spending your time with four people at once was going to be just as if not more overwhelming.
Standing here rethinking your choices wasn’t going to do anything other than give you a headache… and you were beginning to grow cold.
With that you push the towel to the side and make a grab for your clothes.
They were nothing special. Jeans, a t-shirt, and a coat. Save for the stretching around the collar of your top and other mess ups that Splendor couldn’t mend… he had cleaned and patched it up well. You’d have to thank him later the next time you see him… you weren’t sure if you’d be able to handle wearing someone else’s clothes that didn’t quite feel right against your body for much longer.
The top is tugged up to rest slightly bunched at your waist and the coat left bunched up on the bed. You could hang it back up or just keep it on hand, or maybe-
Someone knocks on your door for the second time today and your attention is snapped back to the moment. You weren’t back home no matter how being back in your own possessions made you feel. Your hands give one last shift against the fabric before you turn back to the door and answer- maybe a little too quickly because even Toby looked surprised.
“Oh good you’re not still n-naked,” He let his bare hand fall to his side- he had taken off his gloves to reveal pale fingers, bits of irritated skin from who knows what… the tips were stained a faint pink- actually. He seemed a little flushed all over… his now damp hair was enough to fill in the answer. His goggles were nowhere in sight. His dull brown eyes relaxed.
You force your mouth to remain neutral as you shift between your feet.
“You weren’t meant to see that-”
He instantly shrugged. “Not like I saw anything- no big deal. If it would make you feel better I could do the same. Make it even and shit-” His lips tugged into a grin. The hole in his cheek allowed for clicking of his teeth and shifting of his tongue to sound clearer. You weren’t sure if the clicking noise was satisfying enough to drown out the squish of spit in his mouth.
You must have made a face because suddenly he snorted. “Kidding k-kidding-! I’m not a…” He trailed off and side eyed you as he shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans.
“Didn’t take you for the type to stand butt naked in front of a window.”
“I wasn’t.” Your jaws clacked together. You decided to just let it go- Toby already looked satisfied with his own conclusion and you weren’t much in the mood to argue to change his mind. He didn’t see anything, anyway, not that there was anything to put on display. You made a note to yourself to not do that again- second floor or not you could still be seen apparently. Even if it was still early in the day. The sun had already climbed its way up the horizon but the life inside the mansion was hardly buzzing.
“Whatever.” You muttered as you shifted in the doorway. A stretch of silence passes between the two of you… and you can see Toby fidgeting his hands in his pockets.
“Anyway-” Toby finally broke the silence. “I was gonna ask if y-you wanted to come play? It’s just going to be me… Jeff and Ben- well.” He paused. “I guess you already know. You actually c-came to breakfast this morning-” one of his hands freed itself from its pocket and ran itself through his flattened hair- then waved dismissively in the air. “Whatever- you get it-”
His hand suddenly froze in the air before tensing- “Actually. Nina’s still here, did you wanna go with her to get some shit?”
His hand lowered back down but not before gesturing to some door near the end of the hall. Your eyes follow- a near eye bleeding pink with stickers of God knows what plastered all over the wood.
So they were allowed to decorate their doors, too.
That would make things easier if you needed someone in specific. Actually… you take the chance to glance over the others. Most were bare like yours. Some decorated. One that caught your eye was a plain door… painted the same way as most of the other doors but deep claw marks ran across the wood. The knob looked loose.
Toby followed your gaze.
“That’s Jack’s-” He shimmied his body at an angle to give you a clearer view. Across the hall from your room to the right. “Eyeless Jacks-” He specified after a second. “Hates being called that- don’t tell him we still call him EJ behind his back-” He snickered. You didn’t return his humor. This must have been the Jack that was mentioned this morning- the one who didn’t come down.
Toby’s eyes darted to your face.
“If you’re thinking of introducing yourself- don’t. He doesn’t like people- hermit,” He spoke quickly and dismissively. “Kind of an asshole, too- buzzkill, moody, jerky-”
You got the sense Toby didn’t much care for him.
“Might take-a chunk outtaya,”
You only hum in response as Toby brings himself back to his original topic. “Anyway- Nina-”
“I don’t feel like going out today- I mean… seems kind of dumb to go out when you’re… you know…” You trail off. You felt dumb for even verbalizing the obvious out but Toby didn’t seem all that bothered by it.
“I mean maybe for you- for the time being at least. Most of us aren’t really from around here and make sure not to get spotted toooooo badly, but,” Another shrug from him. “Don’t really blame you for staying inside. It's cold as hell out anyway.” Toby’s feet shift against the wooden floor.
“What games do you guys have, anyway?”
Toby’s mouth kind of sucked in on itself. “Well we did have more of a… selection but Ben…” his mouth then stretched thin. “Has a tendency to mess things up- We do have a copy of minecraft… Jeff’s been meaning to go snag some replacements but you know,”
You didn’t know.
Your face scrunched up.
“Jeff said he beat Ben at something-”
“They sometimes do some PVP in game. Between you and me it's annoying as all hell. We’ve nearly lost so many worlds over Ben throwing a fit or everything just getting destroyed.”
You were sure there was more to it but from how Toby spoke it sounded like normal antics.
“If you’re more interested in the building side of things you should probably get as far as possible-” Toby trailed off as a door a few rooms down to your left creaked open. Similar to Jack’s door there were gashes in the wood- resembling cuts from a blade rather than claw marks. A familiar pale face poked itself out from the dark room.
“You really need to work on your volume dude.” Jeff attempted to narrow his wide eyes at Toby. All that he accomplished was a vague scrunch across his brow that only made him look angry. Jeff’s light blue eyes flicked between the two of you as Toby made a sort of sputtering sound.
“I’m not that loud- I’m still working on it.” Toby muttered as he put his hands back into his pockets- thumbs sticking out and running against the denim. A loose sigh blew out of the slits in Jeff’s cheeks. “Uuh-huh yeah.”
Toby’s nose scrunched.
“You going with Nina or-” Jeff started but Toby quickly cut him off. “I already asked them, they’re not.”
You chewed on the inside of your cheek as the tension flared for a second. “Well, did you ask if they’re going to play? I need to know so I can get shit set up for them.” Jeff’s teeth clicked together sharply as his gaze hardened on the other man. A half eaten breakfast could only pacify him for so long it seemed. You find yourself nearly squirming against the thicker air.
“I mean, if you guys have the space for it. I don’t mind just watching- or not if you-”
Jeff waves you off, and pushes the door to his apparent bedroom open. It’s dark inside save for the glow of a tv somewhere inside. For a brief moment you wondered if the mansion somehow still had a connection to the internet if it had electricity.
Power and water.
No way in hell they were paying bills. If they had any.
“I already let slip to Ben that you might join us and he’s been nonstop yapping about how hes going to kick your ass- honestly I was this-” Jeff slipped out the hand that wasn’t gripping the doorknob to nearly press his finger and thumb together. “-this close to unplugging him.”
“Surprised you haven’t.” Toby snorted. The air seemed to lighten up at least.
“I heard that!” another voice suddenly cut through the air in a crackle- somewhere behind Jeff and out of sight. The burned man threw his head over his shoulder. “Good!” He snapped back before snickering under his breath. Jeff shifted to open the door all the way- and stepped to the side.
“Let’s get you set up then,” Jeff’s eyes fixed on you for a few seconds before settling on Toby. “Go tell Nina she can get a move on now-”
Toby nodded, but didn’t budge. “You want your usual?”
Jeff’s reddened lips twisted and pressed against each other in thought. “Tell her to throw in some peach rings too.”
“Gross.” Toby stuck his tongue out.
“Oh fuck off.” Jeff rolled his eyes. The door is pulled in a little wider. “I’m not gonna bite you like-”
“I already told them about EJ,” Toby cut Jeff off again. If Jeff didn’t look so annoyed that his joke was stolen the way his eyes slowly slid to Toby would have almost been funny. The stare didn’t faze Toby who simply asked you what snacks you wanted.
“Uhm…”
Jeff’s fingers drummed lightly against the doorway as you suddenly blanked out on what snacks were.
“Plain chips and a coke are fine? I mean I’m not… really hungry right now..?” You finally get the words out. A non offensive choice, as if there was a reason to be scared of spilling your preferences in front of these people. You couldn’t go wrong with plain chips anyway.
“Basic bitch answer.” Jeff scoffed- but there was some playfulness in his tone as he rolled his eyes. Toby muttered an acknowledgement before finally walking back down the hall to Nina’s door. You weren’t given the chance to watch the interaction unfold as Jeff cleared his throat. An apology squeaks through your mouth as you unroot your feet from the floor and step into his bedroom.
Jeff’s room was dark- the lights were off except for the glow of the tv, moved onto the floor to allow everyone to sprawl around across the floor. He had a rug, you noted. Various items and clothing laid tossed about the room- sloppily shoved into corners and along the edges of the walls. Posters of bands plastered the walls- slipknot, my chemical romance… and a poster for some animated metal band you’ve only caught glimpses of at three in the morning during all nighters. You must have stared for too long trying to read the band’s name because Jeff mistook you for a fan.
“Who’s your favorite?” His eyes zeroed in on the poster. You sort of awkwardly fumble with your hands for a second. The words stumble out clunkily. “Oh- no- no I’m not… I don’t.. Listen- never watched the show-”
A pause.
Jeff smacks his lips together. “You should give it a try, you could borrow my set… maybe we can watch it together, I’ve been meaning to bust it out anyway.” He looks at you for a long time.
“You seem like the type to rock with Pickles,” He finally turned away from the poster and settled himself on the floor- picking up one of the gaming controllers in his hands. You nodded along as if you had any clue of what the fuck he was talking about.
“Who’s your favorite?” You subconsciously ask as you join him on the floor- about two feet away from him. You take one last look around the room… and notice it was just the two of you. The owner of the voice that chimed in earlier was nowhere to be seen. You jump slightly as the controller is pressed against your upper arm.
“Here. We’re making you your own account so you don’t have to leech off of someone else.” Jeff shifted his legs to make himself more comfortable. It was only then that you realized just how long they were- he was a lot taller than you first thought. Hunching over must have hidden most of it. “Nathan’s my favorite, by the way,”
You hum in response… if you ever did watch the show you’d keep an eye out for… whoever those two characters were.
You punch in a half thought of username and choose an icon.
“Loser.”
A voice suddenly crackled through the speaker of the tv- the noise making you nearly jump out of your screen. “You’re almost as bad as Jeff.” It continued. It was a boy’s voice- young… you couldn’t tell if the crack was from the voice itself or from the static as it snickered.
“Xx_killer.blades_xX-”
“ITS BETTER THAN NINTENDOKID97” Jeff suddenly barked loudly over whoever the other person was.
“I WILL CUT YOU.” It snapped back.
“AND I’LL UNPLUG YOU.” Jeff snarled. You kind of just sat there awkwardly as the two bickered back and forth. You take it upon yourself to browse through the other accounts signed into the console as Jeff argues with the tv.
“Who the hell is sugar.daddy.fourtyseven.” Your face scrunched up- almost disgusted as you looked at the default icon. The two fall silent. Jeff’s mouth stretches into a thin quivering line. The speakers crackle with a stream of wheezing.
“We told LJ it meant someone who gives out candy-” Jeff said through clenched teeth. He didn’t know if he still wanted to be angry or join in on the other party’s amusement.
The TV crackled again. “I still can’t believe he actually fell for it-”
Jeff shook his head and ran a hand over his face. “Fucking… idiot…”
His head suddenly whipped back to force the hair out of his face. A slight roll of his neck offered a string of cracks and pops. “That’s Ben, by the way,” Jeff jerked his head to the… tv…
“Is this like… voice chat- or-”
“God I wish-” Jeff scoffed. “He’s like. In the console.” He picked up his own controller- but not without looking at the bedroom door. “Toby must’ve went with Nina or some shit.”
You didn’t really care where either of them were right now. You were personally stuck on the console comment.
“What do you mean he’s in the console?” Your eyes flicked between Jeff and the console in front of you. It buzzed oddly- the noise faint. It could’ve easily been chalked up to age.
“Easier to just.” Ben was the one to answer you as Jeff busied himself with launching minecraft and sifting through an enormous list of worlds. Most named with a random string of words, and others with a glitching pattern. “Physically get in, than to physically get out,”
The screen blips for a second- earning a hiss from Jeff.
“He’s a ghost.” He said shortly as he found a world that caught his interest. “And he’s good at the whole haunting thing- fucking brat.”
“I can fry the console right now if I wanted to,” Ben shot back.
“You wouldn’t. You’re the one who whined I go steal one.”
Again you sit there awkwardly as the pair have a small squabble. Your hands find themselves to your knees and gently pat the caps before falling still as they both calmed down. “Just. Play nice- don’t be a dick it’s their first time.” He huffed.
The words sounded clumsy as they fell from Jeff’s jaws… being mindful of others didn’t seem to come easy for him. Ben only gave a groan in response and whined about him being no fun- but the glitches and blips shooting across the screen calmed themselves a little as the world finished loading in. You join a second later in the middle of the world’s chaotic spawn.
It looked… decimated.
Craters were littered everywhere and any nearby structures were totally destroyed. There was a stack of blocks nearby that roughly resembled something phallic.
You waste little time in putting space between you and spawn.
“I’ve got some food for you if you want any-” you steal a glance to Jeff’s half of the screen as he- at least you assumed he was- rushed back to his base.
Only for him to swear loudly at the sight of it completely blown up.
Another bickering match between the two ensues. They… argued a lot. Something about a wolf caused this from what you could gather as you kept putting distance between the main area.
That’s how it was for the next hour or so- although it did ease up as Jeff calmed down. Ben had even been nice enough to drop some supplies for you… how he had found you so easily, and so quickly…
You weren’t even sure if the ores he gave you were legitimate but he was insistent you took them.
As the hour crawled by you shifted your legs to fight back against the cramp settling in your joints. You were going to hate standing up when it was time… the stumble and limp already passed through your mind… but it was something to worry about when it happened.
“Really gotta invest in some bean bag chairs… been meaning to get some buuut,” Jeff clicked his teeth and shrugged. “They’re a bitch to try to steal, they’re not exactly discreet.”
You only hummed… before…
“Do you guys just… steal everything? Like food and stuff?” You pull your eyes from the screen to glance at him- but only for a moment as the hissing of a creeper stole your attention back to the game. A sort of hum comes from Jeff.
“Not everything- I mean a lot of stuff is definitely stolen but like,” He put the controller down and motioned around in the air. Neither of you seemed to know what he was trying to do there. “It’s like… most of it just kind of-” He makes a popping sound with his lips. It didn’t come out right thanks to his cuts.
“-Appears. At least the raw stuff. Nina’s mostly the one stealing the… non-raw stuff. Cereal, syrups. If we’re just going off of necessities,” And he shrugged again. “No clue how it works but you get used to it. Mansion’s weird as hell but it’s not the weirdest thing out here.”
“Because fruity pebbles are a necessity,” Ben snickered. Save for some trash talk and jabs he had mostly fallen into peaceful silence as he focused on the game.
“I’m more of a frosted flakes guy personally… gotta get Nina to snag some next time she goes out on a restock run,” Jeff picked his controller back up and returned to finish rebuilding his base. Though… by the way he did it half assed you had the feeling he was going to relocate soon.
“Basic bitch,” Ben snickered.
“You look like you used to bring baggies of lucky charm marshmallows to school.” Jeff shot right back, and after a pause. “And had them stolen,”
A long pause.
“Now that was uncalled for…”
Whether he was leaning into the joke or actually hurt was hard to actually tell. If it was for the bit, Ben was good at sounding like a kicked puppy without needing to show his face.
Then it fell back into a somewhat comfortable silence. Joysticks clicking softly as they’re used, and buttons pressed filled the quiet.
Time seemed to roll right on by, one hour became two… the door to Jeff’s bedroom finally opened to let in a sliver of light.
“Think f-fast chucklenuts-”
Followed by a bag of peach rings hitting Jeff in the back between his shoulders, and falling to the ground with a plasticy thud. Nina snorted over Toby’s shoulder, her own arms full of various bags and drinks. “Sorry it took so long- Toby didn’t know what he wanted-” She squeezed in by the man. “Here,” She shimmied her arms around awkwardly- some items falling clumsily to the floor but she did eventually manage to get you your chips and coke. Behind her Toby started accusing her of being the one that was indecisive but she didn’t really give him a real response.
“Got these for Ben for when he feels up to coming out,” Nina shoved her hands into her pockets and out dumped a bunch of sour warhead bags. The static crackled from the tv.
“No way you actually got them-” Ben finally broke his concentration from the game. The screen warped slightly before calming.
Nina snorted. “Told you I would. Just needed to find a place that actually carried them,” Nina set the rest of the snacks on Jeff’s desk… he had one too, but it was… so much more cluttered and messier than yours. It was in dire need of a repainting. “I’ll be right back Imma go grab my laptop,” Nina suddenly spun on her heel.
“You’re not gonna play?” Jeff called over his shoulder. Nina shouted back about wanting to write as her footsteps rapidly got further away. Jeff snatched them from Toby- sprite and hot fries, alongside the peach rings that slid down his back. Toby settled himself somewhere behind you, between you and Jeff, as the burned man slid him a third controller. Toby himself had gotten a dr pepper and pringles. Sour cream and onion. As well as all sorts of candy and… dr pepper cotton candy. You didn’t even know that was a thing.
Good for him, you guess.
A minute later Nina came back clutching a rather old looking laptop covered with stickers. Most faded or scratched, some brand new. You swear you heard it crackle when she pulled it open and made herself comfortable in a corner of the room.
And it remained like this for a few more hours before Toby broke the silence.
“You sure you’re not gonna p-play?” Toby leaned back to stare at Nina. She only waved him off. “Nah… gotta write, I’m already behind.”
“Nina… you kill people I don’t think people are going to be worried if you take a few extra days to update your little fic-”
“It’s not a little fic-” She snapped over Toby before calming down. “I just think it’s fun okay?”
Nina cracked each of her knuckles and got to typing for a few seconds before stopping… and her eye landed on you. She had caught your stare. “Don’t look so interested, I’ve already got a beta reader-”
“Yeah and it’s Splendor. He literally says everything you put in front of him is good. Not really critical of him-” Jeff stuck his tongue out as he gathered his in game belongings and began to leave the biome he was in.
“He’s just a fan,” Nina huffed as she returned to writing. “Speaking of Splendor,” She said as she wrote. “If you need anything in particular you should probably go to him- or Slender… Splendor’s better though since he’s more… present…”
Toby nodded. “Slender’s usually in his office or somewhere in the woods most of the time… Splendor’s like-”
“A babysitter.” Ben whined.
“You. Don’t need much babysitting- there isn’t really much to sit-” Nina grinned. That only made Ben whine a little more. “He made me sit and play with Sally a week-”
“On the flip phone?” Jeff snorted.
“Yes on the fucking flip phone!”
“I’ll… keep that in mind- I still need to thank him for cleaning my clothes up-” You tugged on your stretched collar for emphasis.
“Oh! Ohoh!” Nina suddenly leaned forward and set her laptop to the side… you caught a glimpse at the tab currently open… you pretended you didn’t recognize the website. You weren’t sure you’d hear the end of it from anyone in the room if you showed any signs of being familiar with it.
“You should ask him if he can show you around the mansion too- I mean you could totally ask us but like… Splendor’s like- a lot more thorough than the rest of us!” Nina scooted a little closer with a smile. “I mean- not tonight-”
“-it’s already that late?” Toby craned his neck to look at the window in Jeff’s room. The curtains needed changing… torn. Or maybe he made them look like that on purpose?
Warm orange light was already seeping through the holes. “Damn…” Jeff huffed. Then he suddenly slapped his knees on his thighs and rose to his feet.
“Well I think I’m just about done with playing- I think I’m gonna go outside for a bit-”
“Think I’ll come w-with. Your room smells rank-” Toby did not give any reaction as Jeff swatted his shoulder. Nina’s laptop crackled slightly as she folded it shut- “Well if you two are going I’ll tag along- need to charge my laptop anyway… forgot to plug it in last night..” She grumbled as she dipped out the room.
You shifted around on the floor slightly.
“Why don’t you come with us? You look like you need to actually get some fresh air… or whatever..” Jeff stared down at the back of your head. You could feel him shifting around behind you.
“Smooth.” Toby muttered under his breath. A soft thud that earned no reaction. You shift your jaws around before putting the controller down. “Yeah- yeah sure… I guess I haven’t actually been outside yet, huh?”
The joints of your legs sharply ached for a few seconds and threatened to throw you back onto the ground as soon as you tried to stand back up…
The TV crackles.
“Can I come with..?” The screen flashed as the game saved and closed. Nearly all of the confidence that Ben had carried all day had been put out just like that… and it wasn’t really until now that you realized just how young he sounded.
For a moment he reminded you of your own younger brother who would shyly ask if he could come hang out with you and your friends. In that moment you wanted nothing more than to at least try to sneak home to make sure he was okay.
Jeff made an odd noise in the back of his throat… and after a brief moment of hesitation…
“Yeah yeah sure- just-”
The console suddenly shut off- and a second later the outlet it had been plugged into, alongside a charging phone- sparked. “You’re going to knock out the power if you keep rushing around like that…” Jeff muttered under his breath as he shuffled to the phone and unplugged it.
Your face scrunched.
“Ben can’t like. Walk around on his own most of the time-” Toby whispered in your ear as Jeff checked through the phone. A dry “ah” is all you give him in response.
Nina rejoined the four of you in the doorway.
“Come on- if we’re lucky we can come back before Splendor’s done cooking dinner-” She grinned as she stepped aside to let everyone out. You’re the last to leave the room, and you hang towards the back of the group as everyone makes their way downstairs. Sounds of the kitchen were the only other signs of life- Splendor cooking you had to assume.
“Come on-” Jeff waited outside the front door. You pull your eyes away from the entrance of the kitchen and follow him outside. His hand held the phone out- like he was taking a call on speaker. Ben had said something you couldn’t catch over the breeze. You should have grabbed your coat. It was too late for that now as everyone stepped forwards to the treeline.
The setting sun painted everything in a range of orange and red. Focused rays cut through the gaps between the trees and burned your eyes. The mansion almost looked colorful in the light.
And it was massive. Once more the fact it hadn’t been found yet thanks to its sheer size puzzled you.
You speed up your pace to keep up with everyone else as you all push through the bushes.
“Did you find any stragglers this morning or are they finally starting to calm down?” Jeff shoved his free hand into his pocket. Toby only offered him a shrug.
“We found tents but we didn’t actually f-find anyone. T-tore down everything to send the message.” Toby rolled his head around to pop away any stiffness in his neck. “They’re… not really thinning down. More like moving around. They really want to find you, man,” he threw you a glance over his shoulder before he turned back… before he spun around on his heel to walk backwards.
“You’re gonna break something like that-” Nina frowned.
“I hope the bone pops out-” Ben suddenly piped up. No one laughed and he awkwardly complained about no one finding it funny before he went quiet.
“Like I c-care. Just means I won’t have to do anything for a bit-” Toby grinned, though his steps steadied themselves- more calculated. Less careless. “So like,” He finally looked back at you. “There’s like posters everywhere of you all over town- you must’ve really fucked someth-thing up. Heard some douche mention something about expecting a cash reward-”
“There isn’t actually a reward, they just think there should be one-” Nina corrected.
“At least not that I could tell,” She added under her breath.
Your insides twisted somewhere at the pit of your stomach. Against everything you kept your face neutral. “Oh, really?” You managed to not croak out as your throat tightened.
You need to get used to this. This was how things were going to be from now on.
“You still gotta tell us what happened-” Jeff snickered.
“Cut them some slack they just got here-” Toby bickered back.
“It’s probably something lame like pushing someone off of a roof or something. Or maybe just manslaughter. Weak shit.” Ben added. Toby waved the unseen boy off.
“Don’t mind them they’re f-fuhcking nosey,” He grunted.
“Which reminds me, I should lock up my laptop.” Nina giggled. “I can’t lie I was tempted to search your name up buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut-” She flipped her hair to the side as it slipped over her eye. “You’re right here and it’d feel weird,”
You all walk deeper into the woods. The ambience of rustling leaves and critters scurrying around swallowed everything up. The mansion was long out of sight now.
Even surrounded by others who you didn’t quite call friends and within some light, you still felt like the threes were going to swallow you alive right there on the spot.
“I mean you don’t gotta spill the beans yet- if anything waiting adds to the drama of it-” Nina waved herself off as she darted a few meters ahead. She ducked down and looked through the grass… and pulled a bracelet out of the dirt with a coo.
“Oh I can definitely make something with this,” was all you heard as she stuffed it into her pocket.
You only hoped that the owner was still alive somewhere to miss the lost item.
“I think I’mma go sweep through to see if I can find any goodies before it gets too dark- you’ve been slacking on your promise Toby-” She pouted as she scanned the immediate area for anything shiny stuck in the grass.
“...Sorry for not stopping midchase to make sure someone didn’t stop something?”
Nina playfully scoffed but said nothing more as she darted to the right- her steps fading away rapidly as she made her exit.
“She looked like she wanted to scurry away the second we got out… kind of surprised she stuck around for so long-” Jeff whistled. On purpose or not, though..
A habit for her, then.
A few more minutes pass in silence as you push deeper into the woods.
“Splendor’s probably-” Toby started before Jeff’s arm suddenly cuts in front of him to keep him from stepping any forward.
“What’s going on-” Ben piped up only for Jeff to shut off the phone and shove it into his back pocket. In an instant it felt like the noise of the forest muted itself. You followed Jeff’s freed hand as he pointed ahead.
Two tents. Some bags strewn about the small clearing.
One man standing with his back to your group, hunched over on the ground fiddling with something. Lighting a fire, maybe.
“We gotta deal with that… too close to the…” Toby trailed off under his breath as he stared hard in the man’s flannel covered back.
“Two tents- probably more than one of them-”
“I’ll check the other tent then- no big deal-” Toby felt around his side before hissing. “I forgot my fucking hatchet-”
“They’ve got an axe over there just use theirs- dumbasses left it out in the open so whatever happens is on them-” Jeff hissed as he tugged into his hoodie pocket and tugged a small pocket knife into view.
The glint of golden sunlight on it only made you feel sick.
“I’ll rush ‘em-”
“Now wait-” but Toby didn’t have enough time to force Jeff to stay where he was. The burned man already broke ahead and dashed through the bushes separating the clearing from your current position. It all happened so quickly. One moment the man was silently crouched and the next he was screaming and trying to wail on Jeff. The blade plunged somewhere in his front- Jeff’s body was kind enough to obscure the impact from your eyes. You tried to look anywhere but the chaos in front of you.
Toby lightly shoulder checked you as he swore under his breath to make a grab for the nearby axe laid lazily to the ground. Some grass blades were sent flying from the sheer speed Toby had ripped it from the dirt- before he dashed to the nearest tent and knocked it down.
No one was inside, so he made quick work of the second.
It was empty as well- but the owner of it… or perhaps the first tent… made themselves known as they screamed at the scuffle in front of them.
A woman around your age- and now that you looked at the man as he thrashed under Jeff you noticed he looked older.
You force the implications out of your mind as you stand rooted to the spot.
Your sense of sound did return to you in the form of a sharp ringing in your ears as you stood there useless.
What could you even do? You were expected to join in, but there was a large part of you that still screamed to help the pair of campers.
The axe is suddenly thrown- missing the girl by a few inches. She bolted back into the trees- the shouts of the man just barely intelligible enough to you to translate into a plea to run.
“TOBY-” Jeff shouted.
Toby didn’t give him a response as he sprinted to the axe and tore it out of the tree’s bark. A second later he broke into the woods and disappeared from sight.
Jeff continued his struggle with the man- who all things considered was putting up a decent fight. He was larger than Jeff, but the stab wound was already stealing away his strength as Jeff forced him deeper into the ground below.
And with a look that only dripped sadistic amusement Jeff snapped his head over his shoulder to stare at you.
“Comere-” He beckoned you to come closer with the blade- now stained red instead of the sun’s golden light. He hissed as he slammed the man back down under him.
And against everything in your mind screaming at you to stay put you force yourself to take a step forward. The moment you were within reach Jeff pulled himself off the older man- but not without slamming his shoe into his side to keep him in place, knocking the air right out of him.
The knife was pressed into your hands. The handle was uncomfortably warm.
“Figured since you’re new you should finish it,” He snickered as he backed up to give you space. You remain frozen for a few seconds.
“Don’t tell me you’ve got cold feet,”
Jeff sounded harsher… sharp enough to make your knees buckle under your weight as you settle over the man.
He looked old enough to be your father and the pit in your guts grew sicker.
You accidentally make eye contact. Brown eyes filled with terror met your own fear filled gaze. The light warped against them- his eyes were watering. Fear or pain. Both were likely. His throat visibly spasmed under the skin as he tried to gurgle out a plea.
For himself, or for “the girls”. The only two words you managed to pick apart.
Girls. Plural.
The word was enough to make the killer behind you swear. And almost comically Jeff leaned down enough to pat your shoulder and whisper in your ear. “I’ll leave you to finish this- Toby’s not as good at this as me,” Jeff chuckled under his breath. The sound was vile.
And just like that he left you there with the man still writhing and trying to crawl away from you.
Broken pleas and cries slipped in through the sickly thick air as the blade shook in your hand.
You didn’t have to kill him. You could let him go.
But the risk of Jeff coming back to the body was there…
And as you stared down at that terrified face you had to make a choice before the man found his strength again to fight back.
Do you kill him… or do you let him go?

Everyone’s eyes glue onto you as you reach your hand into the opening of the sack and pull out…
Whatever your fingers wrapped around was… soft… made of decent material… but it wasn’t fluffy- not even fuzzy. You readjust your hand around the item and tug it out into the air.
“Oooooooh! That’d be mine!” Dandy lowered the sack to the floor as his eyes widened. It was almost painful how obvious he was playing the whole act up. “I’ll be taking that,” the flower reached his green hand forward and plucked the plushie- which was in his likeness- from your hand. You hardly follow his movements as he placed it somewhere to the side- still slightly reeling from the sheer excitement that brimmed in his voice when you drew him.
“You all better behave while we’re gone!” Dandy comes to your side- his knuckles brushing against yours for a split second. His presence lingered while your hand instinctively pressed to your sides.
The sight of Vee rolling her eyes at Dandy’s words catches your eyes.
“...Yeah…” Sprout mumbled, sharing a slightly confused look that you might have mirrored.
“Well,” Dandy spun on his heel to halfway face you. “I promise I won’t smother you,” He gave you a wink.
Suddenly the flower’s eyes flick to Vee- who was already visibly setting the timer on her screen. She didn’t even wait for the two of you to start making your way down the hall. “Hey- hey hey hey-” Dandy suddenly hissed.
“You’ve got seven minutes-” Vee began. She almost sounded… irritated. Perhaps not a fan of being used as a timer for the game- or simply not wanting to partake in the first place… or maybe she didn’t like Dandy’s current attitude. Even you had to admit he seemed a little off- he was always cheery around you… and everyone else.. But this was…
Different.
He almost seemed too eager- too… giddy.
Your hand unglued itself from your side and wrapped lightly around his wrist. “C’mon let’s just go- I don’t think Vee’s gonna reset the timer,” You mumbled softly as everyone’s eyes darted between you, the TV, and the flower. In an instant Dandy fell quiet- eyes snapping between your hand as you continued to hold him and your face.
And finally, the scowl that had shifted to surprise… turned into his usual grin. “Guess there’s no point in wasting time,”
His hand shifted to take yours- and lightly tug you down the hall as the seconds on Vee’s clock ticked by. Half a minute had already been wasted just standing around and Dandy seemed to want to make the most of what was left… You basically let him drag you into the gift shop, and into the storage room behind it.
“You know, it wasn’t easy trying to get this door opened… but I wanted to give everyone privacy for the game, and… well the gift shop’s got some real big windows,” Dandy hummed as he shut the door behind him. You squinted against the darkness- struggling to adjust.
“How did you even unlock it? I thought only staff had the keys-” You slid your hands across the walls to guide yourself. Fingers slid across the cold metal double doors of the room… you always wondered where they led- and without thinking twice you wrapped your hold around the handles and gave it an experimental tug. It didn’t budge.
“Nothing important back there anyway,” Dandy’s hand found itself to your shoulder and gently pulled you to the wall opposite to the double doors. “It’s warmer here,”
Your back pressed against the cool wall- a part of you wished the game took place in the gift shop. It was warmer there and didn’t smell of dust.
“So,”
You nearly jump as Dandy suddenly planted himself right next to you rather roughly. His shoulders lightly slapping against the wall behind the two of you. The edges of his soft petals brushing against the side of your head. Neither of you sink to the floor… personally you didn’t much feel like having to brush a layer of dust off of your behind when you had to return to the party.
“Whaddaya think of the party?” Dandy continued. You scrunch your face slightly as he began to drum his fingers almost impatiently against the wall.
“It’s… fine…” Dandy seemed to tense at your opening but you decided to press on. “I mean- it’s just started, and now we’re here in a closet, in the dark-” You shrug.
“Oh!” followed by a string of laughter from the flower. “I guess I rushed right into the games, huh?” The drumming stops and you hear his palms sliding against the wallpaper. It needed replacing. It felt old- tiny tears littered here and there. You subconsciously pick at a hole with your nail as the quiet between the two of you drags on and devolves into awkwardness.
“You seemed happy about getting drawn,” You hummed. “You don’t really strike me as the type to get so excited over something like this- much less getting picked,”
It hadn’t even sunk in that he seemed giddy over you being the one to draw his item. You felt it was more likely that he was simply happy to play a game with his friends.
Dandy always had the tendency to overhype things- never quite able to turn off his cheery and fun loving persona that he carried during episodes.
As far as you knew he would have been just as excited if anyone else had taken out his doll.
It was a little funny, too… of all the things he could have put into the sack to represent himself, he had chosen something of his likeness. You had seen the other toons put in items that were important to them- a friendship bracelet from Goob that he had made with his sister, the clown horn Looey always used in his acts and utilized to push his comedy acts, Boxten’s bandana that he always seemed to fiddle with in an act to self soothe during his more anxious moments.
You think you saw Ginger put a piping bag full of icing into the sack… you could only hope that she tied it good. A shudder threatened to overtake you at the thought of the insides of the sack becoming stained candy red and the contents made sticky. At least you hadn’t put something of yours in… yet…
You snap back to the moment as Dandy- who had fallen silent for a few seconds to consider your question- finally speaks up.
“Am I not allowed to be excited to have you to myself?” His grin becomes lopsided as he eyes you. Hard. intensely. The wording went right over your head. Had you thought about it a little harder you’d have caught that once again he didn’t really answer your question.
You chew the inside of your cheek slightly.
“You don’t need an excuse to come hang out with me- so… no?” You steal a glance before fixing your stare back on the floor- nearly squirming under the intense stare as he visibly mentally picks you apart on the spot.
The silence drags on as his eyes continue to burn right into you.
“I’m a very busy toon, Dewdrop… you know I try to spend some time with everyone, but,” He sighs. Exasperated or dramatic. Maybe both as he leaned slightly away from you and lowered his head. Another drumming of his fingers fills the pause before he forces himself into your line of sight- bending down almost comically just to make it work.
“Can’t help but feel like I’ve been neglecting you… ‘cides, I like spending some extra time with you- just you,” the pout he adopted when you looked away spread into his classic charismatic smile. You were… almost impressed at how quickly he could change from one expression to another.
You only give him a hum as you turn his words over in your head. “I guess that’s fair?”
The corner of his mouth twitched at your words but he pulls himself from your gaze.
“Y’know, I’m actually really glad you grabbed my plushie- anyone would be lucky to have you as their partner but,” He propped himself against the wall in his best attempt to look as casual as possible.
“I mean it’s more coincidence than luck,” You shrugged and pressed the back of your shoulders firmly against the wall… the coolness felt nice against your tired frame. Another half huff of laughter from the flower escapes into the air.
“I’m being serious! I really am glad you picked my item!”
“I didn’t really consciously pick it-”
His eye twitched.
“What?”
His smile still remained even as his eyes sharpened against you.
Angry? Annoyed?
Irritated.
Dandy sharply inhales through his nose- or… at least that was the noise he made. The sudden shift in demeanor kept you from thinking too hard on the toon’s lack of nose… or really the lack of nose nearly every toon had.
The action seemed to calm him down just enough to soften the look in his eyes and ease the tightness in his posture.
“You’re lucky I’ve got such a soft spot for you,” He finally said after a few more seconds of simple staring.
Your brows knit together. “Did I say something wrong?”
The words felt heavy in the air- cutting right through it and sinking straight to the floor. For how slow they felt coming out of your mouth, the reaction Dandy gave you was instant. He pulled himself slightly from the wall and any annoyance he may have harbored was tossed somewhere in the back of his mind.
“No-!” He almost barked the word as he stared right into your eyes. You flinch against the sheer force behind his voice and he wilted at the sight. “-sorry- I’m being too much aren’t I?”
He fell back to the wall, fingers drumming against it again as his brow scrunched together. “I guess the sweet spot comment came off a little mean, huh?”
Drumming became slight knocking as he looked at the door of the storage room. Time was running out and he knew that very well.
“I don’t think it was mean- a little…” You trail off and make a humming noise. “You know?” You look at the back of his head; eyes trailing where his petals started. With him so close you could catch his scent… floral, in general. No specific flower came to mind- he smelled sweet and earthy. Not at all a bad fragrance to carry.
“Well,” His head lowered to the crack under the door. Muffled talking could be heard from the other side as a pair of feet appeared against the sliver of light.
“I didn’t mean for it to sound like that, Dewdrop, I really do enjoy spending some extra time with you,”
Contrasting his eagerness to remain in your gaze he now avoided yours as his eyes remained fixed on the door. He almost seemed to brace himself for it to fly open as the seconds ticked by. “We could maybe… play another game tonight- I mean… the party has just started-” You offer.
Dandy’s hands slow to a stop.
“If it makes you feel any better I don’t feel like you’re “neglecting” me- but if you really do want to hang out we’ve got all night,” You shrug- shifting your shoulder against the wall. You push yourself off of the wall. The change in position allows you to see a sliver of his face- frown now turned contemplative at your offer.
You aren’t given the chance to press on as the door opens- the chirp of Vee’s timer quickly being silenced as she swings the door open. She still seemed irritated… less so than before but there was still a twitch in her antennae.
“Clock’s up poster boy you better have made it count,” Vee doesn’t linger in the doorway. You catch Shelly say something to Vee but you don’t catch it as you step into the gift shop- greeted by the holiday music playing loudly over the speakers…
You’d think the music would stop after closing.
“Come on, everyone’s waiting,” Vee jerked her thumb over her shoulder.
You glance over your shoulder to find Dandy still standing in the storage room- thinking.
Vee beats you before you can speak.
“Come on-” She repeated. That seemed to snap Dandy out of it- and like he had been practising he brightened up. The crinkles of his eyes as he pulled another smile on his face didn’t feel right as he nearly skipped to the doorway.
“Coming coming- no need to be so impatient, if I hadn’t known better I’d’ve thought you were eager for your turn,” He teased, earning a scoff from the show host.
“As if. I don’t need to rely on a game to talk about my feelings,” She shot back.
Dandy grew rigid for a second.
And continued on like it was nothing.
“Dewdrop,” He slipped his hand around your upper arm. “I’m gonna hold you to your promise of hanging out, you know,”
His hand felt warm and clammy against your skin.
“I’m sure you will- didn’t you have an episode about promises or something? Importance of keeping them or something?” You let him pull you back to the party. He had a knack for pulling you around wherever he wanted.
“It was a good episode!”
You couldn’t deny that.
You also couldn’t deny the way Dandy hovered around you for the rest of the night, even long after the first game of the night had ended and moved to another. Still, a voice in the back of your mind tried to insist that he truly only did miss you, as a friend

Random thing #34
I... THINK.. this is part 34 of this installment? And of course since the event only started 7 hours ago, I could be wrong about this...
But Eggson would genuinely be the sweetest and most supportive partner. Of course that can be said about a lot of the toons; but Eggson is easily number one. Definitely the type to marry with the intention of growing old together, the walking trope of "I still love you as much as the day I first saw you"

Shaking and seething trying to get cocoa research

EGGSON
Sweet old man, he does that soft laugh some older people do. He does make a playful comment about him still being in his prime
Pushes up his glasses to keep them from falling off from the chuckle... he's not typically left flustered after a compliment but it's definitely a while since someone's said he looked nice
Though... he's never been called pretty boy before... makes him feel young again but it's got an odd ring to it in his opinion...
FLYTE
So genuinely sincerely flattered... his wings flap a little, just like his sisters does. He might even take off off the floor for a few seconds
"Oh... you're too sweet, you're pretty to me too!" Or something along those lines- he's not used to one sided compliments... but he does mean it when he says he thinks you're pretty.. you're beautiful to him, or handsome if you prefer
And he WILL be thinking about it for the rest of the day... he may accidentally almost maybe possibly fly into a wall

Night cap (Ending 2) (Astro x reader)
Poll under the fic to choose the next ending
Notes: gn toon reader, possible ooc, pre game, sleepy astro, astro isnt so much awkward more so he doesnt really know how to like. be romantic. subtle hint dropping that he wants to spend more time with you, mutual pining, open ended i SWEAR some of these will end with a kiss its just not all of the toons strike me as the type to kiss casually during a game </3, first fic/piece of writing after my return from my mental health break so i may be a little rusty, poll at the bottom to determine the next winner of course! note that may or may not be needed since im writing this before the final vote and its CLOSE so this may be repeated if astro isnt the winner for ending 2- but the poll will be shortened from 1 week to 3 days for now!! no real reason for this asides from "im itching to write and i dont have many ideas for fics and this is really one of the only two writing projects that arent for october that i have going on rn"

Everyone’s eyes glue onto you as you reach your hand into the opening of the sack and pull out…
Something soft. Almost fuzzy in your fingers as your thumb subconsciously rubs circles into whatever you were- the material almost soothing in your grasp. You had absolutely… no idea what it could be or who had put it in- at least, you didn’t until you pulled the item out into the open. A bluish purple night cap… and in an instant your eyes were on Astro. You didn’t even notice until now that he had taken his cap off and he looked… so weird without it. Quickly- almost too quickly, like you were offended to see him without the accessory- you stretched your arm out to him.
“I uhm… think this is yours..” You mumble under your breath. Astro’s blanket shifted just enough to free one of his hands… his actions almost seem. Tense under all the eyes on him. “It is,” He finally managed to draw out after an odd pause of silence. From the corner of your eye you catch Dandy’s jaw grow tense for half a second before he ordered the two of you to go to the gift shop.
He didn’t have to tell you twice- Astro seemed more than happy to get out of everyone’s line of sight as he backed out of the crowd; only slowing down just enough to allow you to catch up to him without having to go over a brisk walk.
“Nerves?” You ask softly as soon as you are both out of earshot.
“I don’t blame them for staring, but…” The toon trailed off as you stepped through the gift shop’s main door… it didn’t take long for it to click that you were both meant to go into the storage room. How Dandy had managed to unlock the door was something you’d have to touch on later… Astro lets you step through first.
“Right… you don’t like having eyes on you,” You commented as you looked through the room. It was dim. The lightbulb had burned out, or maybe Dandy had taken it out to add to the mood of the game. Whatever mood he was hoping to achieve though… you had no idea. Being locked in a room for seven minutes wasn’t the worst thing in the world but you weren’t too keen on a room that smells vaguely of dust and old paper… fabric that needed washing- the material having captured the scent of the air around it… mostly shirts of less popular characters. You feel a soft pang for Shelly.
“At least it’s dim in here, hard to see…” You trail off as you give Astro a glance over your shoulder. The blue crescent of his face glowed softly and doused the room in its hue.
Ah…
You had forgotten that was something he could do- and something that he didn’t exactly have control over.
“That’s alright, honestly it’s better this way- it's a little… spooky in here, all dark and stuff,” You try to shift the subject as you press yourself into the wall and allow yourself to sink to the floor… only somewhat comfortably. Hard wood could only feel so nice.
Astro followed inside- and just when you thought he was going to take the wall opposite to you… he slips to the floor a few feet to your right. Enough room to give you your space, but close enough to ensure that you both didn’t need to talk across the room to hear one another.
He shifted himself to try to become more comfortable.
Hard floor or not, he already looked about ready to lay down for a nap. A part of you envied him for being able to sleep anywhere. He slumped slightly into the wall- almost melting right into it.
The silence drags on for a few seconds. You didn’t know what to say and Astro- as always- looked ready to doze off. You were convinced that if he wasn’t on his feet and surrounded by the others and- more than likely encouraged- joined the game he would have already found a nice quiet corner to rest after such a busy day.
He’d be valid for that. Even with less visitors focused on you, the constant bouncing between floors to help everyone prepare for the party had left you a little worn down.
“Your hats soft,” You suddenly blurted out. Astro’s closed eye cracked itself open.
“Like, the.. Fabric-” You continued on. No shit the fabric was soft. What else could you have been referring to? Your hands shift around against the floor- the tip of one of your fingers tapping against the wood.
“Yeah…?” Astro shifted his head to prop it on his shoulder.
Your eyes lingered on his face for a second or two before you stared straight ahead- the reminder of his hate of being stared at hanging in the back of your mind.
Though… he didn’t seem to hate it as much when it was just you. Or maybe just one person.
“I could give you one of my blankets,” Astro spoke up after the moment of silence stretched on a little too long. “I’ve got more than I need, I need to free some space anyway,”
You steal a glance from the corner of your eye. “You? Need space? Your rooms massive, Astro-”
It’s a light tease but it was the truth. All the mains had massive rooms- in fact they all had their own dedicated floors… on top of the themed floors that were open to visitors. Astro’s personal room shared the same overall feel of his themed floors. But there were more areas dedicated to rest. Sofas, bean bags- his bed was massive and nearly resembled a round nest. The staff were kind enough to keep the Toon’s rooms off limits to visitors.
“Well…” Astro’s eye dragged itself away from you and settled to his feet… before he tucked them under the blanket he clung to. “The offer is still up… Most of them are blue.. Purple… but I think I’ve got a few in different colors, if you want something else… scented ones, too,” He rambled before falling silent. “I won’t make you take one, if you really aren’t interested,”
The tapping finger against the floor grew still and curled to match the rest of your hand. “I wouldn’t mind looking through your collection- maybe we can run up real quick to your room to sift through it,” You flash a smile. “So long as it doesn’t take all night- I’d like to at least enjoy the party a little more before everyone winds down for the night,” A soft laugh. Astro actually returned it.
“I’m sure it won’t,” Astro hummed. His jaw visibly tensed as he bit back a yawn. Today really must have been taxing on him.
“For your sake so you don’t fall asleep?”
Astro lightly waved your jest off with a hidden hand. “Only a little,”
Another beat of silence.
“Well be sure to eat something when we get back, if you’re going to go to bed after,” You stretched your legs out across the floor once keeping them folded and began to cramp them up. The room was… cool. But not cold… but it still managed to crawl through your form. The wall felt… weird… now warmed from your body heat.
“Maybe… I’ll think about it…” Astro mimicked your legs- his feet dragging his blanket forward and pulling the material slightly taut.
“Sprout told me you helped him in the kitchen today,”
Instantly you perked up. “I did! Well- Kinda- I mean, I did help but he did a lot of the…. You know, giving the recipes and making sure I didn’t… you know, mess up?” Your now clammy hands pull off of the floor with a soft peeling sound- the sweat sticking your skin to the polished wood uncomfortable- and rest your palms on your knees, patting them softly before allowing them to come to a rest.
“I promise I didn’t mix up the salt and sugar again- I swear you’ll have sweet dreams tonight-” It was a bad joke but he at least gave you a pity laugh.
Astro’s head lowered into the blanket as his shoulders scrunched- he tended to curl into himself when he was laughing.
Maybe… it wasn’t a pity laugh after all.
“I’m sure if I could I would… your baking is getting better, regardless of any outside help.” His shoulders fell as the roll of laughter calmed itself. The compliment nearly went right over your head.
Maybe he worded it weird, but…
“You would if you could?” You finally turn your head back to face him. “Are you not sleeping well?”
Astro’s smile falls neutral… but he doesn’t really look uncomfortable or upset about the question. “I don’t dream, I’ve been sleeping well otherwise.”
He said it so casually.
“Like you just… don’t dream at all- or like, do you mean to just don’t remember your dreams?”
You catch his hands shifting under his blanket- running over each other you had to guess. “I don’t dream at all,” He shrugged. He didn’t seem all that bothered by it… you weren’t sure if that made you feel better about it, though… not that it concerned you. “I’m more interested in giving everyone else dreams and checking in on them,” He only shrugged.
You shift slightly.
“I don’t usually pry into other people’s dreams, don’t worry,” He added. You fall still and untense. “It’s… hard anyway, and it’s easier to ask what someone wants than trying to look myself,” He continued on. Astro hardly ever rambled. He wasn’t much of a talker in general… so it was a nice change to hear him lead a conversation.
“You haven’t seen anything weird from my dreams, right? I’ve been having a few weird ones for a while now-” Your mouth curls into a grin.
It wasn’t a lie. They weren’t nightmares but they often left you vaguely confused as you woke up. The details that didn’t slip away as you’d wake up only left more questions. People speaking backwards, toons not looking or acting quite right, toons and visitors swapping places. It was… weird but harmless, just to name a few examples.
“I must have missed it, then,” Astro lowered his head- his brow furrowing in thought. A hidden hand scratched at his chin through the blanket before coming to a rest against his jaw. “I don’t check often… but each time I’m always in your dream- not… me, but…”
You were dreaming about him. Of course he’d sometimes be there with the others… but there were a handful of times where it was just him.
They were never intense or embarrassing dreams. But the frequency of which he showed up would make one wonder. You certainly did at each encounter… non encounter. You knew it wasn’t actually him. He acted too differently. Didn’t look quite right- but it was close enough to know it was him.
A quiet noise came from your mouth before your head turned to the opposite side for a second to look anywhere but him.
“You look like you’re having fun in them, that’s good… I’m glad I give you good dreams, even if I’m not influencing you,” His hands fall to his lap. He shifted into a more straight position against the wall, the blanket making him slip against the wall slowly over the past few minutes…
How much time did you have left?
Not much you would assume.
“Well,” Your throat feels awkward- even the back of your mouth felt weird as you tried to pick the right words to not sound as nervous as you felt. There was no reason for your nerves to spark now. It was all innocent, as far as you were aware.
“You can always come visit, if I can have the real deal-” Your fingers spread across your knees before pressing close to each other a second later. “Of course only if you want to- it feels like I don’t get to see you all that much, since you’re you know…”
“Tired?”
You snap your head back to him and shake it.
“Busy, more like it. I actually… don’t mind taking a nap with you sometime,” You pressed on even as the glow of his face grew brighter- soft blue shifting paler, closer to white. “I mean- and obviously it’s not your fault but you always get so many visitors… sure not as much as say… Dandy or Vee- or Bobette since she’s…” You trail off.
“Limited?” His voice has a light waver to it. Like it was coming from the back of his throat- the noise lingering there and rapidly losing momentum as it was pushed out into the air.
You nod. “Yeah… limited… but- you know, you uhm…” You finally let your odd attempt die off. At least you got your point across- hopefully.
“Maybe…” Astro didn’t let the air remain quiet for long. Maybe he wanted to keep you from feeling even worse if it had stretched too long… or maybe he already had a response ready before you were done speaking. “We can spend some time together, when Gardenview’s closed,”
Your eyes darted to him again for a second. “Like on Christmas?”
There weren’t many days where Gardenview was closed. Mostly reserved for holidays… and on occasion when maintenance was required for the building that demanded more than simply closing down an area or two. At your words Astro’s mouth curls back into a soft smile. Faint, barely there… but present.
“If you want it to be Christmas,” He holds your gaze. You give him a nod. “Right… Christmas.. Today’s the… twenty third, right?”
Astro hummed.
“Right… Christmas, then- I’ll be sure to hound you as soon as you wake up-” You laughed slightly. Nerves quickly unwound and replaced themselves with a warm giddiness that fought back against the chill of the room.
The warmth was cut short as a series of knocks reminds you both that you were playing a timed game.
“Ah,” You mumbled. Time was up, and Dandy’s voice on the other side only cemented that. He didn’t even wait for one of you to speak up before he opened the door- his face softened when he saw you and Astro were a respectable distance away from one another. The light of Astro’s crescent dimmed as the light outside began to floor the room.
“Time’s up you two,” Dandy leaned forward in the doorway before pulling himself back and stepped aside with a light bounce in his step. Something got him happy, but you were too preoccupied with Astro’s offer of spending time together to ask if you had missed something while you were playing.
“Do you still want to get a blanket?” Astro asked softly as he shifted out of the doorway behind you. Dandy’s movements stopped for a split second before he resumed his walk down the hall to the party.
“We’ve got plenty of blankets- I made sure of that!” He called over his shoulder.
Your jaws roll against one another before you find your voice. “Astro’s blankets are softer- we’ll be back soon- promise!”
The flower doesn’t give you an answer. He simply continued walking a few paces ahead of you and Astro. “We’ll just take the elevator… and we’ll come right back,” You added, though mostly under your breath.
“I already have a few ideas of which blankets you might like, we shouldn’t be long…” Astro completes your murmur as you briefly rejoin the party and turn to one of the massive elevators. You only vaguely note what everyone else was doing before they regathered for another round of the game.
“You’ll have to show me which ones you made,” Astro suddenly said.
Your eyes followed his to the table full of treats near the entrance of the room. The door closed as you pinpointed the plate of cookies you had baked. Ginger was kind enough to arrange them nice and pretty on one of the nicer plates.
“Will do,” You nodded softly.
The ride up was… nice. The soft shake of the elevator is enough to keep you in the moment. It wasn’t long until the door opened again and Astro led you to where he kept his collection of blankets.
You could only hope it wouldn't take too long. If you were lucky there’d still be some of your cookies left behind- maybe spared by toons who had a rather nasty sweet tooth.
Hopefully…

Tumblr media
This was wrong in every sense of the word.
Not only should you not be alive right now, but you shouldn’t be lying here in a bed that wasn’t yours last week. The mattress was still covered in basic bedding- black with grey accented comforters. Pillows that were too soft- unused- and covered in plain black cases. The room barely looked lived in. Except… that wasn’t entirely true. Tiny holes where nails and thumbtacks once held postered and pictures showed a vague past of someone living here before you. Where they had gone, however…
Your hands feel uncomfortably warm as they drag over your face in an attempt to force the dizziness from your eyes as your blurred gaze tries to map out the texture of the ceiling in an attempt to self soothe. It did nothing for you.
The transition of running with screaming sirens and blasting lights tailing you into the woods- to the tense but otherwise calmer atmosphere that took place just downstairs… it all blurred together- and if you hadn’t just seen the residents of this place nearly everyday for the past week you’d have thought they were all a twisted concoction crafted by your brain as it melted in its stew of adrenaline and stress. You couldn’t even recall what you managed to say to not get jumped by everyone in the living room. Only the Lord knew that- knives and claws still hung in the back of your mind. The hours following were a blur.
You were shown up to your “new room”, and given names to tack onto faces… names you still struggled to recall.
A place where killers- human and monster- found shelter. It wasn’t a home. The pieces of information you managed to snag onto on your hundredth attempt to backtrack offered you that much.
People came. People left. Some stayed long term, some making it their permanent home- some mansion in the middle of the woods. How it hadn’t been discovered by outsiders wasn’t brushed on as far as you could recall. The odds of you finding it while stumbling around in the dark were still greater than the odds of you bullshitting your way into making them believe you were just like them.
The limp hand by your head still had dried blood stuck under your nails. You hadn’t had the will to pick the flakes out. Just looking at the brownish red buildup made your skin crawl.
You were just like them, even if for just a moment.
Finally with a strangled huff you shove yourself up off of the bed and trudged to the bathroom connected to your- no, not your room- the room. Inside was just as plain as the bedroom was. There was no personalization, and only the bare minimum was there. Hygiene products and towels- no brands were visible. In fact there were zero labels on any of the bottles… and you’ve yet to take the time to figure out what was what. You had cornered yourself in the room for the past seven days to go over what your next plan was. The only time you left was to briefly scope out the mansion’s layout- doing your best to avoid being spotted by its residents.
The water is turned all the way to the left to heat it- steam fogging the mirror in front of you. Maybe that was for the best- you didn’t look like yourself. Your eyes were sunken and held dark circles under them, and you were in desperate need for a shower. Food was the last thing on your mind, and sitting down at the table with… everyone… didn’t sit right with you. The heat of the water doesn’t fully register as you tuck your fingers under the faucet- what was hopefully soap squeezed onto your hand… It felt very much like lotion instead. The lack of lather and bubbles confirmed that. Not that you fully noticed.
The mix up was the least of your worries as you worked your nails under each other to pick the blood out- scraping them against the inside of your palm to at least try to work the not-soap underneath.
You couldn’t stay here, but you couldn’t leave either. The moment you stepped into town you’d be caught. The surrounding towns probably weren’t safe, either… not to mention in the heat of everything you left everything behind. Not just your life, but your possessions as well. You silently cursed your town for not having a proper bus system. At least then you could have put some quick distance between here and literally anywhere else.
The scratching of your nails against your palm intensified near to tearing through your skin- you probably would have ripped your hand right open if it weren’t for the sudden sharp knock on the bedroom’s door.
Two quick knocks… a pause, and then a third knock.
Whatever was put on your hands was rinsed away under the water. A quick survey of your nails revealed that you only got a little more than half the gunk out from under them.
That’s all it was now- gunk. Your hands nearly froze against the cooler air as you shook the remaining droplets off of you. With still damp hands you run them through your hair to at least try to make it… neater.
Initially convincing everyone in this house that you were a killer on the loose like them was one thing. It was the truth, afterall.
But convincing them that it was something you wanted and aimed for was a totally different thing. Most weren’t nosy enough to ask for the details. But a particular pair of men seemed to want all the details. A burned man, and a clown- their names currently escaping you.
Their eagerness was enough to instantly turn you away. No effort was made on your end to run into them- despite the clown’s continuous efforts to stop you by the door to interrogate you on your favorite candies.
The pile of which still sat untouched at a small desk set up in the corner.
Another quick series of knocks pulls you out of your current stream of thoughts.
Your hand moves forward to the knob- dampened skin sticking slightly to the curve of it. The grip shifts and the sound of flesh pulling away a split second later… only slightly drowned out against the dull settling of the building. Someone was moving on the other side of the door judging by the soft creak of the wooden floor. With clenching teeth you draw in a slow breath- and a halfhearted attempt to relax your jaw that failed- and pull the door open.
The burned man stood on the other side- and even with a face that struggled to convey intended emotions… he looked irritated. The fact he didn’t pound on your door like he had the other morning when he was sent to fetch you for breakfast was a surprise that slipped right past you. Unlike you, he looked like he had just woken up. The gashes in his cheek showed his jaw was just as tense as yours as his teeth grinded together.
“‘Bout fuckin time,” He hissed- nearly clicking his teeth together as he side stepped. His sunken eyes darted across your weary frame. “You look like shit.”
The distorted nostrils that stretched across his face flexed. “You smell like shit.” He muttered as he shoved his hands into the pockets of his black sweats.
You grit your teeth and force a smile. Even though he was probably right, there was something in the way he looked at you that irked you.
“Morning to you too-” You trail off. What was his name again?
It started with a J- at least… you think it did. There were multiple people with names that start with J.
James? Jay? John?
“-Jim,” You spit out before the pause dragged out for too long. The man’s teeth clicked again to form a scoff as his face scrunched as best as it could.
“You think you’re fuckin funny huh?” He hissed as he turned on his heel and began to sulk off to the stairs down the hall. “It’s Jeff,” He added- nearly barking over his shoulder. He wasn’t going to wait for you to follow. It seemed that he had already just about done what he was sent to do. He mutters something under his breath- before speaking up again. “Food’s downstairs.”
Jeff.
Right.
Jeff stomps down the stairs.
You shift the awkward lump around in your throat- and hope that following after an already angry killer wouldn’t draw attention to you.
It did.
At least, your presence itself drew attention. You hadn’t actually come downstairs to the table to eat with everyone else yet. If you could you would skip this meal just to stay away but hunger can push people to do things they wouldn’t normally do… maybe a meal could cure the brain fog currently plaguing your mind- and as soon as you were recovered you could come up with a plan. A real plan.
The chatter at the table dies for a moment before slowly picking back up.
Thirteen people sat at the table. Fourteen plates were set across it. There were two empty spaces.
An empty seat roughly in the middle between the massive clown- who’s plate was overflowing with candy- and Jeff already glaring down into his food as he made work on his breakfast. Sitting across was…
Helen you believed. The name in particular sticking thanks to it being, at least in your mind, nontraditional for a man. His plate caught your eye. Almost arranged in the same way as food influencers on your phone’s feed set their meals.
In an odd way you missed endlessly scrolling the internet and watching the world turn to shit. You missed seeing people cook eggs for their ramen and arrange the bowl nicely for the camera. You never got the chance to do that despite saving countless videos on a phone that was now God knows where.
The other spare seat was towards the lower end- at the very end actually. Your neighbors would have been a masked woman who didn’t partake in any of the table’s conversation… and a tall lanky creature in a polka dotted suit; who was currently cutting up pancakes for the little girl who would be sitting across from you.
Sally. You remembered her name too. It was hard to forget her after she nearly hounded you- running as fast as her short legs could carry her- the second she saw you leave your room one evening to map out the mansions layout. She wanted to play a game- and was more than a little disappointed when you rejected her.
You almost felt… bad. Staring at the back of her cracked head made your guts twist in a sad sort of way. Killer or not, she had to have been here for a reason.
“EJ’s not coming down again?” Someone piped up- her face carried scars nearly identical to Jeffs. Her singular visible eye fixed right on you- a quick smile was flashed your way- before her gaze darted around you.
“Said he’s not hungry.” Jeff grumbled through a mouthful of egg. No further questioning on the missing party.
The creature cutting Sally’s pancakes turned to you- a quiet thank you from the girl reminding you that his name was Splendor.
“Why don’t you sit next to me this morning, Dear?”
Splendor’s voice was warm and carried a sort of softness to it. A stark contrast to the growl Jeff had served you with just a minute ago…and you’d rather sit next to the eight foot tall cryptid than him at the moment. Splendor’s mouth widened as you took a half step towards him- followed by another. Delaying your short journey to the table would only draw attention.
“I’m glad you’ve decided to join us this morning, you must be starving,” He commented as you pulled your chair close to the table.
Everyone else had already served themselves. Most had regular morning meals consisting of eggs and a meat side of some sort. Potatoes and berries. Cereal and milk were set on the table as well as slices of toast and various spreads. Juices and water were available as well.
You couldn’t help it. You were taken aback from the sheer variety in front of you. How and where they got the food couldn’t even begin to be fathomed. Everything looked so fresh- and just like the bottles in the bathroom, the items that were still in packaging had no real labels or brands slapped onto them. It looked almost too cartoonishly generic- like it had just spawned in.
The sudden sickly churn of your stomach demanded that you finally put something in it.
“Slenderman didn’t know how you liked your eggs so you get scrambled like me!” Sally suddenly piped up as Splendor presented a small bowl of said eggs to you.
Your eyes dart to the faceless man seated at the head of the table. He had no plate set in front of him. Even just looking at him made your head feel fuzzy. Your eyes are torn back to the eggs.
“If they don’t like eggs I can always spare ‘em some candy,” The clown snickered between sharp teeth.
“I don’t know how you can stand eating so much sugar… I know that’s like your thing Jack, but,” A goggle wearing man cut in. Nina plucked a purple wrapped candy from Jack’s plate. The goggled man made a face.
You silently take the eggs from Splendor to rid him of the burden of hovering the bowl in the air in front of you. The chatter is tuned out as you build a plate for yourself. Eggs. Some fruit. Water, of course. Your tongue stuck uncomfortably to the walls of your mouth. Splendor was more than eager to fetch whatever you had eyed for more than a few seconds. A word of thanks clunkily fell from your lips as he served you.
All things considered, as long as you ignored the odd appearances of everyone at the table… the moment felt normal. Groggy small talk of those who had just woken up floats lazily through the air as plans for the day are made. Silverware clinks against glass plates and cups clack to the table- save for the light plastic one that Sally held.
“You didn’t bring Ben down?” The goggled man asked Jeff.
Toby. That’s what his name was… maybe… Just Toby. Jeff adjusted his grip around the fork in his hand… and got a little too annoyed when the piece of egg hanging on fell back onto his plate. “Nah, he’s sulking that I beat him last night. Not that he can eat so. Whatever.” He grunted as he stabbed the fork back into his egg. Toby hummed slightly before shifting around the shredded hashbrowns on his plate… drowned in syrup.
“Well if he’s feeling d-down to it later I can do a round with him later,” He paused as he slapped the back of his fork to the potatoes. “Think he’d throw a tantrum if I win?”
A snort comes from Jeff.
The food was… nice. You had to admit it, even if you weren’t currently biting back your hunger induced nausea. Everything tasted as fresh as it looked. The water felt refreshing as it slid down your dry cracked throat.
“Maybe we can play a-after I come back from…” Toby flicked his eyes to Slenderman. The air felt like it thickened for a second. Both the creature and Toby stayed still for a second. “It’s just a walk through to make sure no one’s m-messing around, shouldn’t take too long,” He added after a few seconds. The two masked men next to him shifted slightly.
One in white, and the other in black. Both having not said a word as far as your eavesdropping could tell. “What game were you thinking?” Jeff pushed his plate an inch forward as he decided fighting with his food while he was already pissy wasn’t worth it.
The sliding of the glass was covered by the sudden excited gasp of Sally. Her tiny hands patted the table as she stretched forward towards you, fingers spread out as her giant bright green eyes fixed right onto you.
“You said we’d play another day-!” Her eyes widened in an attempt to give you her best puppy dog eyes. “And it’s another day now-”
“Sally,” Splendor scolded gently. “They’re still adjusting,”
You open your mouth slightly before closing it. Several eyes flick to you and suddenly felt like you’d be an asshole if you rejected the little girl in front of everyone. The fork is gripped tighter in your tensing fingers as you force your eyes down to your partially eaten meal.
For a room full of killers, everything was far more casual than you’d thought it’d be. So much more… domestic and normal. Your insides suddenly felt like they were squirming against your outsides. It was all so familiar already that it felt wrong.
“Maybe I’ll think about it after I take a shower,” You mumbled as you stuff a strawberry through your tense jaws. Its bright sweetness only forced the tension in your mouth further before the taste of it died back. Sally’s hands returned to their light tapping as she bounced slightly in her seat in excitement at the prospect of having a brand new playmate.
“You look like you really need that shower,” Jack snickered as he crunched his sharp teeth against the hard candy- shattering the pieces of sugar with ease. “Might need a whole new wardrobe too,”
He…
Actually had a point. You’d been given a spare outfit or two from one of the other residents. A loose t-shirt and some pants. Nothing special, and whoever the owner was was probably waiting for you to return the items to them. The clothing you had arrived to the mansion in were already returned to you after being thoroughly washed by Splendor.
“I tried my best to get the worse stains out, my brother is better at mending clothes than I am,” He had sheepishly admitted through a soft half hearted chuckle a few nights after you arrived.
Your leg bounced under the table. Clothing shouldn’t be an issue- you had no reason to stay here for as long as possible… unless…
Would you have to stay and lay low for a while? The fork is twirled in your fingers before you put it to the plate and shifted the food around.
“Don’t worry about that for now, if you plan on staying I can always write to my brother to come over and whip something up for you,” Splendor lightly tapped his finger against the table in thought. The movement of his black claw brought the lack of his plate to your attention- just like Slender. Your eyes flicked to the faceless thing.
Were they… related?
You can’t bring yourself to stare for more than a few seconds. Back to staring at your plate for you.
The conversation around you continued without your input.
“We can paint together after breakfast, Sally,” Helen spoke up as he too pushed his plate in front of him. In an instant the little girl ripped her lingering stare off of you and faced the man as he pulled his mask back over his mouth. “After you finish your food of course,” He added.
Toby was the first to stand up from the table with his plate in hand. “Welp,”
The two masked men at his side also stood up mimicking his actions. Both still remain silent… but the feel of one of them staring at you burns right through your body even as you try to keep your eyes on your half eaten toast.
“May as well go- go out and pick out anyone who decided to camp out here last night,” Toby’s eyes landed on you. “You got our work cut out for us,” He teased.
The man in the white mask made a soft barely noticeable noise… almost like an agreement. “Loads of people have been coming in trying to find you- must’ve really did something messy to draw so much attention,” He snickered.
“You still owe me a story on that…” Jack leaned your way. His silver spiraled eyes piercing right through you. His smile looked… friendly, or at least it tried to be against the intensity of it and the teeth. “I’ll give you more candy if it’ll sweeten you up to me,” He added with a snicker.
He seemed to constantly be on the verge of bursting into laughter.
“You’re already spoiling them Jack,” One of the men at the table finally broke his silence. He too also did not have a plate in front of him. His eyes and mouth glowed a faint gold… and even with the dead grey of his skin something about him seemed so deeply off… despite being otherwise human looking. He almost looked wooden. You swear you saw grooves between the joints of his fingers as they drummed against the table. His grin matches the clown’s.
“Youre just jealous you ain’t gonna be getting any of my stash once you leave,” Jack shot back.
“I’m a man with plans,” The fingers cease their movements for a moment. “But I’ll be back,”
“Well. I’ll be sure you get some candy for the road!” Jack pushed himself up from the table quickly- nearly knocking his chair to the floor. He lowered from his tiptoes and scooped the rest of his candy from his plate and set it in front of the other. “There! I’ll be back with more,”
The girl who had asked about an EJ piped up. “I’ll take the sour ones if you don’t want ‘em Pup,”
She glanced at you. “You like sour ones too?”
You don’t even get the chance to process that she was talking to you before Toby and the two masked men leave the room. “We’re headin o-out,”
Toby’s eyes landed on you again. “If you want, you c-can join me and Jeff when I come back-”
You glanced to Jeff… at least now that he was more awake and partly fed he didn’t seem as angry with the world. “Nina you coming with?”
Nina- the girl who had asked you the question- leaned back in her chair and rocked it. “Maybe… think I’ll go on a snack run… I’m running low on my stash… speaking of- who wants anything? Jane?” She leaned towards the woman sitting next to you.
“I’ll pass.” She muttered as she stood up and brought her plate to the sink and started to clean it.
You tune out Splendor insisting she didn’t need to clean up and turn your attention to Nina as she demands it again. “I could bring you with me- I mean you’ve been like… cooped up all week. You’re worse than EJ I think… I don’t mind waiting for you to shower first,” She offered.
“Show you around outside too?” She added.
Jack snorted. “Like there’s any point in that anyway,” He commented. Nina only rolled her eyes at the clown.
“Could bring some snacks to Sally’s little playdate, too,” Nina added under her breath as she jerked her head slightly to the little girl as she practically dragged Helen out of the room. Splendor quietly excused himself to join the pair… at some point “Pup” had also left the room- leaving just you, Nina, Jeff, Jack and Slender.
Your plate was still somewhat filled with food but you couldn’t bring yourself to continue to eat. The weight of your current position settles itself into your gut. The brief sense of normalcy rapidly escaping you as the air around your head suddenly feels thicker- heavier.
Slenderman’s faceless head had shifted to angle itself towards you. If he was trying to speak, no words broke through the air. At least… not the air itself.
It was like a rolling buzz ringing throughout your skull. The voice was smooth as it weaved right through you from somewhere.
The sensation felt so foreign your body tensed up in an immediate response of fear against the simple words spoken.
“You look tired,”
That’s all he said for a few seconds. Before he pressed on.
“Leave your plate, I will handle it.”
Your face scrunched. Even with the mention of Slender being the one who made breakfast the offer to clean up after you felt strange coming from something that only slightly looked human. Your feet shift against the wooden floor as you rise to your feet. The remains of your hunger were killed and the feel of the clothing you were borrowing sticking to your body became all too obvious at once. You must have smelled awful and for a fleeting moment you felt bad for those around you.
A glance is spared for Nina as she awaits your answer. The edges of your vision blurred against whatever hold Slenderman had on you… even as it rapidly slipped from you.
“I’ll… think about it while I’m cleaning myself up…” You mumbled through teeth that suddenly felt dirty. You faintly recall seeing a toothbrush neatly set aside for you in the bathroom when you were cleaning your nails.
Nina’s mouth pulled into a large smile.
“I’ll try to wait then… at least for a bit! Might leave around noon if you decide not to come with… just come to my door before then- hard to miss, on the same floor as your room,” She brushed a hand through her hair as she stood to her feet. “Lemme just,” She pulled your plate away from you- only hesitating until you gave her a nod of approval. “I’ll just take this,”
“By the by if you need anything like- soap or stuff I can grab something for you while I’m out if you don’t wanna come with- anything you prefer? Scents ‘n stuff?”
You only shrug. “Anything works,”
You shift your weight between your feet before turning to the doorway. “See you later, maybe,” You added awkwardly as you made your way out of the kitchen. A quick glance showed that Jack and Pup had made themselves comfortable on the couch in the living room. The former offered you a wide wave that you half heartedly returned as you slinked upstairs.
The moment the door to the bedroom closed you ran a hand across your tired face for the second time today.
Whether you liked it or not this was going to be your home for a while. At least until you were able to find something else to do. Getting caught by the law wasn’t a favorable option, but neither was staying in the murder house. The floorboards creak softly under you as you pace for a few seconds.
The best option you had was to bide your time- and the residents likely weren’t going to let you keep to yourself for much longer.
The door to the wooden wardrobe in your room was opened… next to nothing inside save for the clothing Splendor had cleaned for you, and the second borrowed outfit. Your hand goes for your own clothing first… and tossed half haphazardly to the bed. It's not long after that you’ve ushered yourself into the shower and fiddle around with the bottles to determine what was what.
Conditioner, Shampoo, and body wash in three different bottles.
As you work through the knots in your hair under the water you weigh your options for the day.
Nina had offered to take you out to town… but going out could be risky.
You had made a half promise to Sally to play with her later- but maybe you could get out of it if Splendor and Helen were entertaining her.
Toby had also offered you to hang out with Jeff and.. Ben… who you haven’t had the chance to meet yet.
But of course, you could simply stick in your room for the day… or perhaps simply make a break for it and throw all caution to the wind. If you got caught by the police, then that’d be that.
Those were your only real options. The question was: what would you decide to do?

Witerally wocky wickaby
the animation bug…….it got me……
I got inspired by some of the rough I saw for lackadaisy episode 1 and decided to animate a scene from the comic. That thought slowly snowballed into this shot, which—while it technically doesn’t exist in canon—is inspired by Rocky’s demeanour in Breakdown.
I may or may not have been grabbing the air like a baby reaching for a mobile trying to figure out how someone would turn a steering wheel.
time taken: 10 hours

Comfort.
You need to keep your cool in a moment like this, keep a steady head. When you find it hard to do so, it's never a bad idea for a friend to help.
Astro & Reader.
Tumblr media
You couldn't help it. Every battered breath came out stuttered, your head pushed hard against your knees. Can't do this anymore, you just can't. You'd try and hold back your whimpers in fear of garnering attention from the fucked up "twisteds" that were no doubt taking a bite outta your friends right now, but you just couldn't keep your cries down.
This was unbearable. The absolute worst. Here you were, just trying to help the toons out, joining one of their runs, and suddenly it went from 8 to 3. Five people downed on one floor. All cuz of what looked to be a fucked up imitation of Pebble.
First you heard the screams. You'd jumped, hands clenching around the machine you were extracting ichor from. Missed a skillcheck, couldn't keep your hands from trembling and messing it all up. Then, when the sound of thundering footsteps came racing towards you, you ran out from a corner and immediately smacked into Glisten.
Whatever was chasing you had made the split second decision to lean down, and take a bite outta him right in front of you. The look in his eyes, the weird gurgle he'd made from between its jaws, you couldn't keep yourself from emptying your stomach right then and there. Thankfully, your survival instinct was still intact, and you'd leapt towards another room.
4 out of 8 machines done, with incredibly dwindling numbers. It didn't take a mathematician to know you're all fucked. So here you are, losing your mind about it while huddled behind some crates. Your muffled whimpers had quickly evolved into full body sobs, all will to persevere overshadowed by watching a friend take the brunt of your panic-stricken mistakes.
Holy shit, you should've just stayed cooped up in the lobby. With Glisten's extraction speed, there might have been a good chance you'd all have been able to make it out of here. You missed Flutter. She was here for a moment, and then vanished as if something had plucked her out of existence. You prayed it wasn't painful. Prayed it wasn't anything like what you'd just witnessed.
It's getting worse now, your fearful cries. You wouldn't be able to stop the noise from building, even if you'd covered your mouth with more than your hands. You can faintly tune in to those awful footsteps, and they're approaching steadily.
You're not sure if you give up. You can't bring yourself to stop crying, but maybe when the vile thing approaches you'll try and struggle, kick off with your feet and make a break for it.
When something touches your shoulder, you almost squeal. A hand clasps around your mouth and pulls you into a body that's oddly cold. You flail, but ultimately jerk to a stop when three more appendages wrap around you to still your movement.
What? It's offputting enough to make you still, whimpers catching in your throat as you throw your head back, trying to see what exactly has you trapped.
Oh.
When you meet his eyes, you expect to see fright. The same dread that has haunted each of you before you'd even set foot in the elevator.
Instead, you see that he's calm. Unfettered. Almost serene in the way that he looks at you. As if he's relieved- that it wasn't you that had been splattered against the ground.
It makes you freeze, to see such an expression at a time like this. Confusion scrunches your brows, your hands reaching up to layer his own.
"Astro?" You mouth against his hand. He blinks for a moment, a nod coming in response.
"You need to be quiet." He whispers, drawing closer. One of his hands pulls his blanket around you, almost as if attempting to hide you from sight. You're startled by the soft hum that rumbles through him, and even moreso shocked by the lull that encompasses your body. You sag, breathing taking a sharp dive before oddly evening out.
You knew he had the ability to put others to sleep. You'd also known he could manipulate dreams, since he'd offered multiple times to help you with yours. However, you had no idea he could soothe you to this degree. Not while awake, at least.
Nobody could blame you for the way you sunk into the body behind you, slouching and almost curling up. With the sudden relaxation you felt, all the adrenaline that had built up was released. You felt more exhausted than ever. It was obvious, to you, that this was where you crashed.
Not a good time to do it, that's for sure. But hey, if you wanted someone to blame for that, Astro is indeed right there.
"Better?" He sighs out, hand moving away from your mouth. You wondered if your breath was disturbing to someone who ran so cold. You couldn't imagine someone with cold breath breathing all over you. Eugh.
He seems to notice you've drifted a bit, no longer aware of the situation at hand. You feel one of his hands squeeze your shoulder, and his humming comes to a stop. Dazed, you peer back at him, realizing he'd wanted a response.
"Yeah. Way better. Thank you." It's stilted, and you feel the urge to yawn. Astro stares at you for a moment more, before looking to the side of the crates. You want to follow his gaze, but one of his hands covers your eyes.
You almost mumble out a question, but he shushes you. You're in too much of a daze to argue so you simply lean back and rest for a moment. It takes a few minutes, where your heart pounds in your ears with an eerie rhythm. Thump, thump, thump.
It's an odd beat, but you try not to mind it. Just relax.
It passes, and suddenly Astro is scooting to your side. You open your eyes again, and see him lean forward to almost methodically scan your body. "We'll have to run for it." He takes a hand in his, (you'd never seen him use his actual arms nor hands for anything), and closes his eyes.
A bright, ethereal light dances across the floor around you- and you feel refreshed. The heavy weight of exhaustion drains from your body, and you almost jump up from the hectic energy of it all. You do lean over though, feeling as if he'd dumped cold water all over you.
"Astro?" You warble, the weight of your situation tightening your throat.
"You'll be okay." He shushes you, offering one of his rare smiles. He pauses, peering over the crates and listening. "They're down the other hallway. Run to the left, go straight, I'll be right on your heels the whole time."
You nod. The direction feels relieving, imperative to your survival. You'll get out of this, you'll be okay.
You've both got this. You can't bring yourself to smile at him, not with all that you've seen this last floor, but you're extremely grateful you'll be making this last push with him at your side.
You hear the almost imperceptible sound of a machine go off, followed by two more almost in unison. They must have primed them. That seems to be what Astro had been waiting for, since he ushers you up and forward.
"Let's go."
It'll be okay.

can I request for twisted! astro with a reader who's distracting? And the reader wasn't able to make it to the elevator during the panic hour because they were distracting the twisteds so other toons can go to the elevator safely
Twisted!Astro x reader
ooooohooohooo wasnt too sure if you wanted this as fluff with a hit of angst or pure unfiltered angst--- sooooo... open ended angst it is! notes: toon reader, gn reader, astro kind of... isnt fully there... you are in a very dangerous position, ambiguous ending, typically perceive the twisteds as feral creatures with barely any semblance of self inside Buuuuuuuut I'll be nice and let them have a little more... lucidity.. for Angst purposes heh cws: general canon typical violence mentions
Tumblr media
He wanders behind you... almost like a lost puppy. But in a sad and horrific kind of way
He really... really... doesn't like excessive noise. Please do be careful to pass all your skill checks when he's nearby- the sound of the failure and the machine clogging is a little overwhelming..
His presence is... almost suffocating as he lingers right behind you. He's... larger now. Most of the other twisteds radiate heat but astro is... oddly cold.. you can feel him behind you even if he's not breathing down your neck
That... made hugs a little uncomfortable but you didn't have the heart to wriggle away from his hold
Aren't you tired...? He sure is... why don't we just... take a nap.. yes yes a nap sounds nice... he's going to ask for you to lay down and rest with him several times in a short window
Doesn't like letting you out of his sight for long. It's been so long since he's seen you- please don't run off
Whether you choose to go to the elevator when all the machines are completed is up to you- but just know he cannot follow you if you go back up to safety. Be it something prevents him from physically entering the elevator or the remaining toons outright refusing to risk bringing a twisted up to the safe haven they've built after gardenview closes.... it doesn't matter if it looks like Astros still somewhat mentally present

If requests for Tropes are still open can I please ask for prompts 36 46 and 20 with Astro?
Prompts 36 46 20 w/ Astro
Mmm I really really wanna try buttered noodles I keep hearing about them... maybe I'll make them tomorrow for lunch
Prompts: nightmares, head rest, dancing
Notes: gn toon reader, short post, written on mobile, you're the one having the nightmares, pre game, astro struggles with energy and fatigue
CWs: none
Tumblr media
DANCING
NIGHTMARE
The moment he hears you're having nightmares he's instantly going to try to make it stop- sending all sorts of good dreams your way
If the nightmares are particularly bad he directly asks what you want to see in your sleep as a little pick me up to hopefully make you feel better
Wakes you up as soon as he's woken from your squirming- tucks you close against him under his blanket... four arms make embraces easier and more secure...
HEAD REST
You become his rest when you're both sitting next to each other or cuddling... or both..! He can't help but nod off when he's with someone he loves and feels safe around- not to mention it's demanding being a main...!
His blanket is nice and soft, too, same with his hat so really should you complain..? It's free snuggles...!
He's actually not all that embarrassed about it- sure a little flustered in the beginning but he's not going to let his little habit eat him alive
Actually you've taken to offering to let him lay on your chest or lap instead of your shoulder so he's more comfortable!
He... doesn't much care for dancing but he would at least try for you...! It's not that he's embarrassed...well... okay... he is... IF there's other people around- but it's not because he's being seen with you..! Of course not! It's because of the whole.. being perceived thing... stage fright even if off stage
No, a lot of it is because he's almost constantly tired. A lot of dancing between the two of you is gentle swaying back and forth as you hold onto each other
He sometimes pulls you under his blanket if that's the case

Calling them pretty girl 3/3
Yall ever sit down for too long and get pain in your kidney areas yes or no VEE ALSO USES SHE/THEY PRONOUNS LETS GOOOOO I LOVE LEARNING ABOUT CHARACTERS I OTHERWISE WOULDNT LOOK TOO DEEP INTO
Characters: Shelly, vee, ginger, bobette
Notes: reader is gn, toon reader, can be read as pre or post game, mostly focuses on canon character, short post, written on mobile
CWs: none
Tumblr media
SHELLY
see youve called her smart before, you love listening to her ramblings and quick facts about her interest in fossils an old species-- but pretty? of course you never made her feel not pretty but...
the wording of "pretty girl" makes her fall silent for a minute- it feels casual, and in some contexts it may even be less innocent... but youd never be cruel or demeaning to her
she definitely thinks hard on it but in the moment she thanks you for it
VEE
heh... of course shes pretty! youve got to look your best for a show..! dont let their tone fool you, vee's definitely saving your words somewhere in her head to listen to every now and then
she wont lie though... pretty girl sounds a little corny, and shes going to (lightly) tease you about it. oooo you not only think shes pretty but you think shes a girl ooooooo/lh
"youre not too bad looking yourself." and she kind of just walks away to do what needs to be done- you thought youd be able to fluster her before her show? HAH think again!
BOBETTE
so so so used to tending to others and uplifting them that your comment on her looks kind of takes her off guard for a second- before she bounces right back into her upbeat energy
pretty girl wouldnt be her first choice of what to be called but she takes what shes given! besides you put so much effort into the words...! and she'd be lying if she said it didnt still make her feel nice..!
happy little gingle noises... you... never could understand where the sounds came from- maybe theres bells somewhere on her..? actually now that you thought of it they kind of sound like theyre coming from her head...-
GINGER
well i'd say she'd hide behind her hair but... no... well she still can, she definitely does hide under her hair... and probably stumbles over something thanks to the sudden blindness
shes... shy.... among other things... sure youve helped lift some of those insecurities of hers, but theyre still... ever lingering... a part of her deep down almost wants to deny you
but you said it so earnestly that she just cant bring herself to do it- you really think shes pretty?

Calling them pretty girl 2/3
Idk if I'll end up doing it but I think I might make cake today hmmm hmmm thinkimg side note because i didnt know this until i was looking at teagans wiki... SHE USES SHE/THEY PRONOUNS LETS GOOOOOOO!! thats like the second character im aware of that dual wields pronouns (looey)
Characters: poppy, scraps, teagan, tisha
Notes: reader is gn, toon reader, can be read as pre or post game, mostly focuses on canon character, short post
CWs: none
Tumblr media
POPPY
you get a really loud exaggerted (but still genuine) "awwww!" from her, you really think shes pretty? thank you!
and dont think shes not going to return the affections, because she will say something in return! youre a real cutie and she almost feels wrong letting you do all the loving
theres an extra bounce in her step for the rest of the day afterwards, definitely had an effect on her
SCRAPS
call her pretty girl after she managed to get her makeup done and shes going to be over the moon about it- especially if she did it herself today! working with claws is hard!
little tail swishies after you say it, usually that happens when shes irritated... but sometimes it can happen when youve got her thinking- it does take her a minute to fully realize what you said
thinks youre a total sweetheart for it and she WILL say so
TEAGAN
you know how characters with boa's kind of just... sink their head slightly into the fluff when theyre flattered? like pull their neck back and kind of give that... look? yeah they do that, WITH the quiet little laugh
shes not laughing at you of course...! she just thinks youre too sweet..! (like theyre one to talk, give she has sweet tea in her head!). you can be really charming when you want to be/t
oh she WOULD compliment you back with enough elegance to make anyone turn red
TISHA
she cleans... a lot... actually if you didnt spend so much time with her youd swear it was the only thing she did- so naturally its likely that you call her pretty girl when shes dusting a shelf or picking up someone elses mess. the way she kind of just pauses... in her movements...
sorry she was a little caught up- could you repeat that? pretty... girl...? oh youre too kind, dont mind how she passively indirectly comments on how you should give her a hand
..dont let her lack of reaction fool you, she does greatly appreciate your words shes just too into her current task to fully express that

Calling them pretty girl 1/3
Excluding toodles of course
If I forget any of the other lady toons let me know!! Yay!! Not much to say here!
Characters: brightney, Connie, flutter, gigi
Notes: reader is gn, toon reader, can be read as pre or post game, mostly focuses on canon character, short post
CWs: none
Tumblr media
BRIGHTNEY
ooooooh if you say this to her after a long day its going to take her a minute to process what you said to her- shes got a habit of over extending herself to give others a hand... but when it clicks she lights up (pun intended)
no really she does light up, her bulb nearly flashbangs you for a second before she tones it down! its just the way you worded it that got her! pretty girl? it simply knocks her off guard for a second!
definitely appreciates it but tries to downplay it... "oh.... quiet you" said lightheartedly of course. she gives off sweet older lady vibes/pos
CONNIE
she... kind of makes a face. not a bad one! just a bit of... hmm... its not that she doesnt like being called pretty- she knows shes pretty and its nice that you think so too... but pretty girl sits a certain way on her thats hard to explain
and trust me she does try to explain when you bring up her reaction, but the words fail her. i like to think connie is particular about what names you call her, so this might be a product of that
"uh huh and what does that make you?" shes teasing i promise shes teasing!! she likes seeing you get a little worked up before she gives you affection!!!
FLUTTER
absolute sweetheart, her antennae twitch and her wings flutter (hah) a little faster for a second before she calms down- you think shes pretty...! why wouldnt she be happy about that?
will be writing about this in her diary tonight, and yes you will get a knowing look from gigi within the next day or two- she knows what you are/j/ref
does her very best to communicate that she thinks youre pretty too... nuzzles and nudges, chittering (bug noises bug noises!!), things like that! her not speaking will not stop her!
GIGI
her eyes kind of widen for a second before his face relaxes again. heh. she'd rather call herself pretty or hot but pretty works too... oh lighten up shes only teasing! she... actually does like it
hoarder of objects and trinkets, hoarder of names. pretty girl WILL be added to the long list of names you call her- you might actually have to write them down to keep up with them all...! you... do realize shes joking about wanting to be called honey bunches... right...?
while pretty girl isnt her first choice its definitely one thats going to stick! you get a gold star for the effort and creativity...! just... give her a second to find it...
