Im crying bc i thought about kira nerys for 4 seconds.

She went from an orphaned child soldier to the liberator of Cardassia. She freed the people that oppressed her and took her childhood and her parents and countless friends. And she did it all even tho she was sure she was going to die and didn’t even WANT to help them. But she did it because she knew it was the RIGHT thing to do. And then she immediately lost her partner and best friend, Odo, when she went home. And then all but one of her other friends left as well.

She lost her partner, Bareil, in like the worst way possible, a piece at a time. She lost her new father figure, Tekeny. She lost her sister/daughter Ziyal. She lost Jadzia. She lost her close friend and religious figure, Sisko.

The universe took everything from you and your faith never wavered, your kindness only grew with time. You took no shit from anyone and you slayed the whole time. Nerys you are everything to me.

I believe Bajor is a soft matriarchy, at least in a religious sense. I know that in sci fi settings we're used to seeing a matriarchy in "what if extreme violent patriarchy but switched," but there's a few hints to it being an egalitarian society that used to be matriarchal

Naming conventions: Bajor used to operate under a caste system, and in ds9 the only Bajoran who we know both the parents of is Kira Nerys, and the Kira family by caste are artists. Kira Taban, her father, was a gardener, while Kira Meru was an idol painter, implying that the caste came from her mom.

Religious position: both of the Kais in Deep Space 9 are women, and Winn Adami is known for being extremely orthodox. While men often become Vedeks, Bareil Antos is notable for being reform. When the Prophets give another person from the past as a prospective Emissary, Kai Winn uses him as her mouthpiece.

Parenting: not only is the emphasis on labor to keep the laboring patient as calm as possible and overseen by a midwife, but men seem to be pressured to have children more than women are (though this could be attributed to Shakaar being much older than Kira)

The Resistance: Kira Nerys is the only one in her family to join the Resistance, and is sent on raids as young as 13 years old, when most other members are adults

General Attitude: Bajoran women we meet (Kira Nerys, Ro Laren, Winn Adami, Kai Opaka, Leeta) are generally more aggressive than the men (Bareil Antos and Shakaar) and the only Bajoran we see as a Starfleet officer is Shaxs (who while aggressive is definitely more in touch with his emotions and managing the mental health of others)

Here's a woman who spent her girlhood as a terrorist and has now lived to see liberation and doesn't know how to stop fighting. Here's a doctor hiding a secret that could ruin his life if it's revealed. Here's a spy for the fascist former occupiers with a horrible cover story. Here's a person bonded with a symbiont living their eighth lifetime. Here's an alien who has no idea what he is or where he comes from.

And here's Miles O'Brien thinking he was getting a normal job.
