活動名稱:電聲҉l҉a҉b҉o҉r҉a҉t҉o҉r҉y҉
✧ Ramaputratantra /Rama Saputra
✧ Nick Tsai /
✧ LICA / Alica Han

In a Cafe—Exhibition Review
At Kishibe Cafe, the owner takes a different approach to understand the theme of authenticity, history and memory represented in the exhibition.
It is likely that human beings can only spot their own memories and histories through perceiving the shimmering light emitted from the glow of flames. The light, hence, is partially formed through the collision between time and consciousness. Such light does not shine like the Sun, which burns distantly, eternally, and even illuminates fairly and graciously for the public; you cannot reject the Sun! Nonetheless, the reality of free-thinking should be considered as the resistance to violence; as a result, the self that is shaped and located by memories and histories does not belong to the Sun. Rather, the self is constructed by the practice of accepting and rejecting. As the temporal fragments are accordingly discovered, suspected, archived, understood, or rejected; memories related to the particular ones are subsequently created and articulated.
Kishibe Café has arranged various exciting events throughout the year of 2023. Every single event in itself is, of course, a memory per se. However, for the venue of Kishibe Café, everything transforms into memories and histories for itself. While the 2023 retrospective exhibit showcases the significant practice of accepting and rejecting, it does not aim to re-display the content from the past; instead, it truthfully re-elucidates the elements from the past. Namely, the reconstruction of multiple elements is what memories can rely on and how trusts can be established.
The exhibition begins with a series of photos of a car that crashes into the cafe in reverse and plows into the motorcycles beside the sidewalk with the floor covered with fragments of glass. The people who were involved in this event, including the owner, the staff member, the driver, the neighbors, and the passersby, are included and archived in the photos; moreover, the photographer was the police officer who came to take dictations. The photos might not be the first visual records archived by Kishibe Cafe, but they turn out to be the representation of a collective memory. On the one hand, the photos entail the theme of this exhibition– “In a Cafe;” on the other hand, they delineate the connections and relations between our cafe and other people: a serendipitous “crash-into.”
It is difficult to articulate events happening in the linear passage of time. In particular, most daily-life events are driven in a way that is similar to our decisions on what’s for dinner; we especially tend to worry about what to have for dinner, but we will forget about such struggles afterwards. As daily-life events are inevitable and necessary, the unusual and fascinating events are the anchors of memory that adhere to your everyday life. The two kinds of events are intertwined and can only be disclosed by means of element reconstruction. The real history that assembles your memories is intrinsically related to your own self. The organizer of the exhibition (Claire Huang) unravels the authenticity of Kishibe Cafe. For all the participants (whether they are the staff members, the regular or new customers), the exhibition offers each of them to ruminate over their own memories and flashbacks. After all, a cafe is an ordinary and aura-less place that exists in your life. It will never be like the Sun. It will be an entity that embodies the qualities of being soft, inclusive, or even absurd, chaotic, and irrational.

Kishibe Cafe has arranged various exciting live performances and art exhibitions throughout the year of 2023. Towards the end of the year, we invite artists and musicians who have participated in our previous events to collaborate and perform in newly formed group sets.
The mix-and-match sets are as follows. Kozma Philo Liu from Dope Purple will join up with Sun Jenga from World Synth Records. The representative of Berlin-school in Taipei, Golden Jade, will collaborate with contemporary sound artist Immanuel Dannenbring. Further, A.P.R.A from Scattered Purgatory and choreographer Eileen Tu will transform music and dance into a crossover interplay. The final set belongs to the cooperation between two cafe owners— Silent Jeff and Eri Huang.
To celebrate our anniversary, a 2023 retrospective exhibit entitled “In a Cafe,” curated by Claire Yun-wei Huang, will be held in Kishibe Cafe. The exhibition conjures the notion of “element reconstruction” by way of tracing the past and archiving transitory moments. On the day of the opening party, the key and temporal theme of “element reconstruction” will be represented through various approaches to sound and visual display. Different kinds of performances will be interwoven in the same space yet different temporal realms. Difference and repetition are, thus, re-contextualized as a form of practice and reflection: the daily-life experience of staying in a cafe shares similar features with the repeated attempts at appreciating a piece of artwork.
In addition to the exhibition and live performances presented at the opening party, we organize book/artist fairs and invite rare-book coordinator Old Zingy Zines, independent publisher Passepartout, and artist June Ying Hsien Lee to showcase their books and artworks. Don’t miss out on all the fun and excitement in Kishibe Cafe, and we wish you a joyous end to 2023.

Immanuel Dannenbring is a composer and sound artist based in Taiwan. Aesthetically he is interested in seeking a means to strike a balance or to obscure the boundaries between both academic and popular music worlds and demonstrates this through performance, composition, sound design and curation. As a performing artist he primarily works with the sampling of found sounds, field recordings and percussion in rehearsed and improvised settings.

Recently, Noel Gallagher criticized the rise of the coffee shop in a news release as he claims that the booming coffee culture has ruined the music market. Aren't these two things totally unrelated? On the contrary, in the context of the development of music culture in East Asia, cafes act on a par with the channels of information exchange, and from that, communities are formulated. Moreover, many customers choose to visit the cafe based on the aesthetic taste disclosed by the venue itself. Cafes and the music market, hence, forge a complementary relationship.
In Japan, many cafes or bars incorporate the theme of jazz or classical music into their aesthetic idea of taste. From the analysis through a taxonomic approach, while music is the root node, beverages are not subsets; rather, they are the foundation that collectively constructs the subjectivity of space. They are, in other words, inseparable, and they are capable of extending diverse narratives. Imagine this: on a scorching afternoon, you enter a bright and gleaming cafe, where four DJs from different communities take turns playing songs. The balanced volume level allows everyone to chill and talk freely. Music, thus, transforms spatiality, temporality, and distance through auditory perception. Our nerves are calmed by the aroma of coffee and dessert offered by seasoned baristas. What a wonderful afternoon.
Kishibe Cafe is located at the end of Tong'an Street, on the opposite side of Kishu-An. The owner, Animal Huang, roasts coffee beans by himself. The signature blends are presented and innovated according to different harvest times and seasons. This event held in Kishibe Cafe will adopt a simple approach to invalidate Noel Gallagher’s argument: we meet up with friends on a Sunday afternoon for a cup of coffee, and we chat while listening to music. The DJ set ends in the evening, and we’ll take in a quick bite when we’re a little peckish. ■

Is ZUCC a reptilian (a lizard or a reptile, whatever)? While human beings are living in an era where we are kidnapped by FACEBOOK, the "mountain dog taro" (Hakka meme I guess) stands alone on the shore and wonders what to have for dinner............
Please join us at Kishibe Cafe! Let's enjoy this gig and have some coffee together. No worries, you will not suffer from GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease)!!
* "Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is mainly a clinical diagnosis based on typical symptoms of heartburn and acid regurgitation. Current guidelines indicate that patients with typical symptoms should first try a proton pump inhibitor (PPI)."

OZZ Paper Skin
@ozz.books
