FINALLY EXPLAINING PREGNANT HALT AU

(this post has slight context, might wanna read it first, fairly short. This post however is not short). In this au, Halt gave birth to Will before giving him to the ward. This post only covers Halt and Crowleys relationship immediately before and after giving him away

@iceagebaby did help me solidify some of these events, so I'm giving him some credit in this au too =]

So the way this works is Crowley gets Halt pregnant on accident sometime after the first TEY book but before the second. Halt doesn't tell anyone at first and honestly does Not take care of himself the way he should. Crowley's mom is a midwife and she calls it a miracle that Will survived at all given what Halt put himself through. He pretty much only tells people once it becomes literally impossible to hide, around the 5 or 6 month mark. Before that the only people who knew were Crowley, Duncan, Rosalind, and Crowley's family.

Halt tries to take care of Will for ~ 2 months after he's born, but he just can't do it. He is, in all reality, a perfectly fine father with Crowley helping him. But then he has to move on his own and he just can't do it. Equal parts uneducated and scared of becoming his father. And Halt actually wants Crowley to keep Will, but Crowley knows Halt and says "If you are that far away from your son your health will crash and burn. I would sooner move to redmont with you than separate him". Plus, they're not the most openly dating, so even more motivation to separate them.

Now, Crowley's mental health takes a dive being away from his son too, but not nearly to the same level as he knew Halt's would. Crowley is basically drowning himself in work because when he's not distracted he's missing his husband and son. He is Not Feeling Good, and pretty much only Duncan notices. Duncan however decides it's not his business and doesn't ask (wrong decision)

Anyways so Halt tried to take care of Will, but he realized that he just couldn’t do it. He tried his hardest, but he was sleeping in so late that Will was missing morning feedings, and the trauma of everything that happened in, well, his life was finally starting to hit him. Y'know, that first moment you feel truly calm is when all the bad things start to sink in, because now you've run out of the adrenaline that kept you alive for the past 21 years.

So Halt writes Crowley a letter,

"I don't think I can take care of Will. I can't. Can you take him? Can your family?"

Crowley can't come down any time soon, busy at work, so he writes a letter as soon as he can because that's the quickest way to get in contact with Halt. Even if he tried to just drop all his responsibilities right then, a letter still was quicker

He says that his family could never take care of another child. If they tried, the kid would just grow up ignored and alone. There's too many kids already there.

For reasons I have never been able to think of, Crowley can't take him either (it has to happen for the plot)

Crowley tries to talk Halt down and suggests asking the ward to help out a little. A babysitter would probably help him. Maybe some sort of wet nurse, if the breastfeeding was getting too much?

But when Crowley gets Halt's next letter, and he sees how short it is, he already knows what happened. Halt couldn't do it, and he gave the kid away. And this time, Crowley does drop everything. He gets to Redmont about 2 days quicker than he should have

Crowley starts trying to find a way to get Will back, but ends up realizing... Halt's right. They can't take care of Will. Crowley decides he'll fight with Halt later (because he is rightfully fucking pissed) and just sits down and cries with him.

It does pretty quickly turn into a one sided fight, Crowley yelling at Halt for just going and *doing that* and Halt is just entirely unresponsive. The only thing Halt says is at the end, when Crowley's finally done, and that is "get out"

About half way through the ride home Crowley realizes what a horrible idea it was to leave Halt in a state like that

Meanwhile, on Halt's end of the story, he had no other choice. He would never use a wet nurse or a baby sitter because his parents did. But his depression was serious. Far, far too serious. And for the rest of Halt's life he regrets what he did. If for nothing else, he regrets not giving Crowley the chance to say goodbye. But he did it

They end up fighting for abouuuutt 4 years before they finally just fucking talk. Massive apologies for both (both fucked up massively) and it takes a while after the apologies for them to really start being more than friends again

And that's just how Will ended up in the ward! There's a couple different ways Will finds out, but generally you can just make up whatever you want and I've probably thought about it before

It's been talked about that part of the reason why Halt gets seasick and hates the ocean is because of Ferris trying to drown him, and poison him with seafood, and this is pretty much canon to me.

But picture this: Halt hates walking under big buildings, or walking straight under the walls or close to the walls of the castle, because of Ferris pushing the roof tiles on him.

Him just getting really uncomfortable and nervous, and occasionally when it's particularly bad, or maybe the day reminds him of that day, when he thinks no ones looking, he glances up, just to be sure.
