the way that the air nomad's lifestyle was so deeply communal and aang is the only one left. the way that he is so fundamentally alienated from the world to the extent that he is literally referred to as a living relic. the way that everyone around him is telling him that the only way to save the world is to betray his nearly extinct culture. the way that he befriends katara so quickly and deeply. the way he goes on to befriend everyone he meets and improve their lives by his very presence. the way he never fully gives up on his identity as the last airbender, even when his identity as the avatar threatens it. the way he saves the world through asserting his cultural values.

I want to see an Azula redemption arc. Ik it would take a while, but Zuko took a while too. She needs somebody to help her understand that she’s loved unconditionally, like Zuko had Iroh. She needs second chance after second chance, and I think she could get there in the end.

My thoughts on Ursa from Avatar the Last Airbender

In terms of how she’s written in the comics, Ursa is very very human. She regrets leaving her kids, regrets saying what she said to Ozai to make him treat Zuko so horribly. She makes mistakes, and then she learns from them, in parenting her other kid whose name is very close to Katara’s mother’s name so I forgot what it was. But there’s one mistake she made that she doesn’t seem to regret, or even notice. I don’t think Ursa played favorites, because she did try to parent Azula, but it stopped there. Whenever Zuko was upset, Ursa would help him, but she never tried to understand WHY Azula was so mean. She never considered that maybe Azula had been brought up in an environment where her emotions were considered weaknesses, where she was never going to be enough because she could never rule. There is nothing that Ursa has in common with Azula’s thinking, but as a mother, she should’ve tried to talk to Azula the way she talked to Zuko, instead of dismissing her as a monster. Maybe then Azula could’ve learned that she wasn’t loved conditionally, but Ursa telling Zuko how amazing he is and never asking Azula why she did the things she did and how she felt only perpetuated the idea that Azula wasn’t enough. Yeah, I don’t love Ursa.

Boiling Rock is really so moving when you step back to think about it.

Because Sokka is brave, but not reckless. This is the one completely reckless move he made, impelled by love and guilt and the desire to protect the people he cares about.

So who comes with him? Zuko, the most reckless person we know.

Zuko, who knows exactly what it’s like to feel like you’ve failed the people you care about. Who doesn’t know where his uncle is, only that he couldn’t save him. This is Zuko wanting to prove himself, wanting Sokka to trust him, but it’s also a vicarious prison break. This is what he couldn’t do for his father figure, but maybe he can do it for Sokka’s.

And it’s the planner being reckless for once, and the reckless guy being forced to actually plan, even if neither of them come in with an exit strategy. They’re just building the bridge as they run across it the whole damn time.

They’re so stupidly brave and loving. They’re the best.

I want to see more appreciation for duos — NOT ships. Altho there’s nothing wrong with ships. But let’s show some more love for amazing friendships. Cinder and Thorne. Percy and Grover. Ronan and Noah. RONAN AND BLUE. Ik these already get hype but I wanna see mooooooreeeee. And also ATLA, there are so many cute friendship pairings in a big group like that. Suki and Toph. Toph and Aang. ZUKO AND AANG HIS LITTLE BROTHER. And whether you believe in Zutara or Kataang or Zukka, all of those had to start out as friendships, and I want to see some hype for that growth and all those cute little platonic moments. Platonic love deserves more love. The power of friendship is so legit.
