🛠️ New Trade Occupations Added to NZ Green List & Median Wage Thresholds Updated for Skilled Residence Visas – Effective August 2025

📢 Immigration New Zealand has announced two major updates effective 18 August 2025:

10 New Trade Occupations Added to the Green List – Fast-Track to Residence Skilled workers in the following trade occupations will become eligible for the Work to Residence pathway under the Green List:

Metal Fabricator

Metal Machinist (First Class)

Fitter (General)

Fitter and Turner

Fitter Welder

Pressure Welder

Welder

Panel Beater

Vehicle Painter

Paving Plant Operator

Eligibility Requirements:

Must hold a job or job offer in one of the listed occupations

Have at least 24 months of work experience in New Zealand

Be aged 55 or under

Meet health, character, and English language standards

Meet the required wage thresholds:

$43.63/hour (or $90,750/year) for metal, fitter, and welding roles

$38.59/hour (or $80,267/year) for panel beaters, painters, and paving operators

Median Wage Threshold for Skilled Residence Visas Increased The new median wage for visa eligibility will rise to $33.56 per hour, impacting:

Skilled Migrant Category

Work to Residence Visa

Straight to Residence Visa

This update aligns with Statistics New Zealand’s June 2024 data and reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining immigration standards based on current labour market conditions.

New 'Parent Boost' Visitor Visa to Strengthen Family Connections

The New Zealand Government has introduced the Parent Boost Visitor Visa — a long-term multiple-entry visa enabling parents of citizens and residents to stay in New Zealand for up to 5 years, with an option to extend to 10 years.

🗓️ Applications open: 29 September 2025

This visa is designed to reunite families, while ensuring sustainability of public services. It is not a pathway to residence.

🔍 Visa Features

Stay Duration: Up to 5 years per visa; renewable once

Multiple-entry status

Supports family unity without permanent settlement

Not a residence visa

✅ Eligibility Criteria

👤 Sponsorship

Must be sponsored by a biological or adopted child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident

Sponsor must commit to:

Covering accommodation, living, and repatriation costs

Providing financial and health-related support

💰 Financial Requirements (choose one):

Sponsor income ≥ median wage (or 1.5× for joint sponsors)

Parent(s) income meets NZ Superannuation threshold:

$32,611.28 (single) or $49,552.88 (couple)

Parent(s) personal funds:

$160,000 (single) or $250,000 (couple)

🏥 Health & Insurance

1-year minimum health insurance including:

Emergency medical care (≥ $250,000)

Cancer treatment (≥ $100,000)

Repatriation and return of remains

Ongoing insurance required

Health checks: Once during initial application and once in the 3rd year (outside NZ)

💵 Visa Fees

Standard fee: $3,000

Pacific fee band: $2,450

Tourism Levy: $100

3rd-year health check fee: $325 (or $240 for Pacific applicants)

⚠️ Important Notes

This visa does not lead to residency

Health insurance and financial compliance are mandatory throughout the stay

Failure to maintain requirements may lead to visa cancellation or deportation
