how do you feel about china and his relationship with vietnam? There's a lot of drama and just luggage with that relationship that would be fascinating to unpack imo

i don’t think she trusts him (if ever).

it’s undeniable that he played a huge role in her history, and he did influence her culture in many ways…but it was a very unequal power dynamic and oppressive for her. colony and empire, after all, for practically a thousand years. 

so i think she continues be pretty guarded around him; it’s not at all like america and england where ties improved a long way from the lows they were at after the revolutionary war. they may trade, may talk Business and Politics over a table instead of shooting at each other today—but…there’s still a lot of historical baggage that is unresolved. and a whole lot of wariness on her part about china’s ambitions (yo, the south china sea dispute). 

ultimately, she’s known him for so long—she knows very well what he’s capable of. he may roll out the Good PR about being a responsible world power and Not Like those other meddling (western) powers, but i believe she’s intuitively wary because for most of the time she’s known him, he has been no less an empire than the others.

I find it impossibly difficult to ship China with anyone. At all. He just seems like the kind of character to be weary and suspicious of the rest of the world (since he’s been around for four thousand plus years and through some wild ups-and-downs in his time). I feel like he’d be very wary and cautious about everything he does in terms of romance, which is why I can’t see him falling in love easily.
