when i’m lurking around in the fandom, seeing wild claims without explanations to back them up just pisses off my inner debater.

so i saw a post that said people cannot write fanfic where midoriya and bakugou are friends because that “erases abuse”… yeah. no clarification, no elaboration, was given after that one statement.

i did the respectful thing and inboxed the op of the post, where i tried to get a clear explanation. but all they had to offer was reaffirming that it erases abuse (what kind of erasure is still not apparent), and say that it’s harmful to the “people affected” (who?) beyond “semantics”.

you can’t engage in a discussion if the terms, or “semantics”, aren’t even properly defined. i proposed two reasonable definitions of “erasing abuse”: either they’re referring to the events that happen in the fanfic itself, or in canon. it seems like the context of the op’s original post extends to all types of fanfic, whether it’s canon compliant or set in an alternative universe, even ones which don’t involve quirks. now, the cause of conflict between these two characters obviously stems from their different quirks, or lack thereof. in a world where this doesn’t exist, there would not be any abuse to erase in the first place. and i did not say this to the op, but it’s unlikely that even normal bullying would go on here? as both midoriya and bakugou wouldn’t have circumstances which push their personalities to become as nearly as extreme, they’d actually be rather similar- determined and hard working- and could work together well enough as classmates, if not friends.

op replied to my message by (finally!) clarifying that they meant canon abuse would be erased. i asked how, when fanfic has zero bearing whatsoever on canon. they said it’s “plain disrespectful”, makes them “uncomfortable as a survivor”, and then accused me of being an abuse apologist.

now, at this point, i’m pretty pissed. you should never personal attacks in any debate/discussion, much less over the internet, since 1. you don’t know shit and are probably making gross assumptions (they did it based on 2-3 pieces of art of midoriya and bakugou as childhood friends i reblogged on my side blog) and 2. the qualities of whoever is making the debate is absolutely. fucking. irrelevant to the point. i could forward this entire post to the hugest abuse apologist in the world, and it wouldn’t change the argument made by a single word.

i proceeded with how alternate universes, and fanfics as a whole, predicate their entire existence on a canon one. the fact that someone makes fanfic about these two characters as friends in a quirkless au is because they’re acutely aware that it’s not how it goes in canon. in fact, people who make and consume this content are the ones who are most aware that the abuse exists, and therefore would want to imagine a scenario where it doesn’t.

like, seriously, who’s op to gatekeep people on what they could write and read in fandom? i’d get it if consumption of fanfic actually somehow alters readers’ memories and perceptions of canon that drastically, but it doesn’t, and it never will, because people are fans of the canon first and foremost before they seek out fanfic.

i decided to end the discussion on a peaceful note, wishing op a good day. they did the same until two days later, when i liked a post on their blog and they accused me of “interacting with them without their consent”. and they just had to do it in the most cowardly way- calling out the username of my sideblog without tagging. at that point, i did myself a favor and got the fuck out of there.
