For every 📎 I get in my ask box, I'll post a thread that I want to do. [ x ]
ooc.
me, reblogging this last night: this will be fun to think about :) me now, reaping what i sow: OTL i say that jokingly for the most part, but very funny, lmao but here's kind of what's poking my brain
properly addressing the fallout of aa4 and turnabout academy (which we're touching on in the album thread :3c ). i was writing with an athena once for pseudo-therapy for klav about it all, but it kind of...fizzled out. alas.
something exploring klav's career right after he got phoenix disbarred; i think it was both the best and worst for him, and particularly a lot of phoenix's friends hating him on the fuckin spot because of course they know phoenix and know he wouldn't forge evidence. so klav has to work past all of that, especially proving himself to edgeworth
i want...the gavinners. they are entirely nebulous in my brain and just. idk. i want klavier and daryan and the others to like. bounce off of.
i do also want to see klav interacting with daryan at differing stages, and just. see how their relationship would grow naturally.
also the same for a kristoph, eventually. i want to revisit some of the family hcs i have i think, and make it...better? i guess.
i wrote very briefly with a sebastian, and i'd like to do so or at least poke more at klav while he was at themis. honestly him being so young in school would be fun to poke at, that kid needs help
mmm. klav's relationship with courte.
klavier needs to go through the hazing ritual of AA which is being arrested for murder and being a defendant
in a similar but not entirely the same vein, i love the idea of him trying to defend himself. or being the defense attorney for a trial. itd be fun and kristoph would be so fucking pissed

Apollo isn't there to say it, but the guilty look on Klavier's face when asked about how much he's slept can probably be heard anyway. Especially when he says almost too quietly, "...Not really, no. Not on purpose, but... It just. Happened. I promise I napped a few times."
Apollo is certainly kinder than someone like the Chief Prosecutor might be able his behavior, but Klavier still feels chastised plenty. He doesn't like making people worry. But a tiny part of his mind is glad that someone clearly is.
"Thank you." Klavier says once Apollo finishes, clearly grateful. It's nice to be able to speak mostly freely with someone again, considering how long it's been since he's bared his heart like this. Not since before the Themis trial, and before that several weeks before the Tobaye trial. "...I mean it."
Tumblr media
"But anyway. Um." He takes a moment to process Apollo's question, and make sure he understands where the other is--because it's clear Apollo misunderstood how quickly the pseudo-album came together. It's still in rough shape (a rough set of instrument parts with the guitar melody and his voice) but still a lot for only a handful of days. "Yes--feedback. You're...you're the first person to know this set of songs exists, really, at least in this state. Um--some of the lyrics are from old song ideas. A couple of lines that have been salvaged from what I wrote before the Gavinners was a thing, and Daryan vetoed the songs they originally came from." A slight waver in his voice, but he recovers fast. "I had thought about revisiting them since the Tobaye trial, since one or two lines have kind of always stuck out as my favorites."
"But 95% of the melodies and about 85 to 90% of the lyrics are all new, and the recycled stuff might as well be fresh, too, because it's changed so much. And...well, I don't really have anyone to help refine things." He's still friends with his former bandmates, but they've all kind of drifted apart in the past few years. Klavier's been busy, and they're all off either doing police work or enjoying their new solo careers. "So. Yeah. Thanks for--for. Mmm."
He's nervous. That's a first, at least in front of Apollo.
Regardless that there was no one in the room to make eye contact with, Apollo felt his gaze instinctively avert at the mention of Daryan Crecsend. Klavier had already assuaged his worries about being blamed for what had happened, but those events were obviously still a painful point, and it was hard not to still feel culpable for his loss. Especially when it was being pointed to as what had brought about this dry spell of musical inspiration, and when it was explained that that had been more difficult for Klavier emotionally than Apollo had ever acknowledged.
The comparison to journalling helped things fall more into place. Apollo didn't know a thing about music or songwriting, but he did write prolifically about his thoughts and feelings, and he could empathize with the catharsis of capturing the things that were hard to say out loud in a different form. The private nature of a journal didn't translate completely to the artsy need to create and share music that 'worked', but it was still easy enough to imagine the struggle of working through more complex feelings without such a reliable aide to express them.
Like, feelings about the execution of someone you looked up to.
"This... week...?" Apollo fell silent for a moment, but anyone listening could probably hear the sounds of his brain frantically recalibrating to this new information. He'd already known that on some level this had to have been related to Mr Gavin, just given the timing of it -- but Klavier suddenly regaining his songwriting ability and recording ten new pieces in less than a week after his brother's death provided much, much different context than Apollo's initial assumption that he had been sitting on a half-finished album for a couple of years and merely taken recent events as the impetus to finish it and send it out. "Did you-- have you slept?"
Tumblr media
But that wasn't really what this conversation was about, and Apollo didn't want to put his friend on the defencive by criticizing his priorities in taking care of himself (... yet). "I mean... yeah, I'd be frustrated, too. All of this is a lot to have stayed pent up all this time, isn't it...?"
"So, help me understand. I think I'm mostly getting it already, but 'everything' is a lot to come out at once like this... so maybe talking through it will help you figure out where you can tighten it up. That's why you wanted feedback before showing it to anyone else, right?" Apollo tried to sound focussed on the music; he didn't want to ask directly about anything Klavier wasn't emotionally ready to share, but the pieces were coming together in a way that made him more concerned for his feelings than he had been already. Klavier talked like some part of him that had been trapped was set free when he was able to write again -- but if that freedom was triggered by the death of someone close and took the form of a manic, days-long songwriting episode, was it a sign of healing or of sickness? "Whatever you need, I want to help."

Klavier just smiles as Apollo goes on about the eventual legal curriculum that would need to be established, nodding eagerly. "I can at least start organizing things, and when things have calmed down some and you'll need them, I can sending things over your way. I might stop in to Themis, or pull some strings, and see what help I can get from elsewhere for you."
For once, the thought of his old high school and his mentor don't sting. Professor Courte would be thrilled by the prospect of revitalizing an entire country's system, and especially what would knowledge would be passed on. Klavier is more than a little excited himself, if he's honest.
He can't help the laugh that bubbles up as Apollo stutters and flushes in embarrassment, his whole face brightening. "Was, you don't want to drink away your worries and drown in good food with me?" But he's joking, mostly, even though he'd be more than willing to make Apollo a very nice meal.
"Well--I like cooking, but we can do something else instead. Take a night to forget toilet cleaning and mountains of documents."
Tumblr media
Apollo blinked, his expression becoming one of unguarded pleasant surprise when Prosecutor Gavin mentioned the notes he had squirrelled away. He already had boxes set aside of his own law school textbooks and presentation slides and old journals filled with wisdom from his time at Gavin Law Offices – he was going to need a whole legal library worth of reference material to tackle what he had lying ahead, so the spontaneous offer of his colleague’s schoolwork was serendipitous indeed. "That would be great!”
He looked a little bashful, touching on the part of all this that he was perhaps the most proud of and excited for. “It’s too early to be worrying about it just yet, but… if we can implement fair trials and get the courts running smoothly–” (They would, eventually, because the alternative wasn’t an option. But the first step was so daunting that everything that came after still felt like a faraway ’if’.) “–I’m going to be teaching it all to the next class of attorneys, so whatever school materials you can find would really help with planning a curriculum, too.”
It sounded boring out loud, but sharing everything that he had learned so far, and was going to learn, with the people of Khura'in – giving them back the power to nurture the law and keep their courts just – was just as big a responsibility to him as setting up the framework to begin with. He had always been mentored, never been a mentor himself, but the confidence he’d gained that he was ready to grow and step into that role one day made his cheeks warm to think about.
… Though, not as warm as Gavin’s cheeky comment and knowing wink.
Tumblr media
“I-it won’t be like that time!!!” Apollo’s face had turned bright red in an instant. “But– m-maybe you shouldn’t offer to make me food, just in case.”

Klavier turns his attention to his own coffee as he pours a second cup (also black, for now at least) as Apollo takes a moment to wake up more. He hums an acknowledgement of hearing the first minor comment, offering a quiet, "You're being dramatic, it's fine," in response.
He nods once when Apollo asks if he means it, glancing up to meet Apollo's eye as he does so. He frowns, though, as Apollo goes on to ask what he's owed--he pauses in the middle of attempting to step around Vongole to sit in a nearby chair, brows drawing together. "First born?"
Tumblr media
"...Why would you owe me anything?" Apollo certainly has a weird relationship with peers in his field, clearly. And he sounds genuinely confused, to his credit, when he speaks. "I don't want anything from you, and I wouldn't ever say that you owed me for something like this."
He's...honestly a little upset that Apollo would think that of him, if he's honest. They may be opponents in court, but that doesn't mean he'd use something like this as blackmail. "I said it can be off the record, so it's as simple as that. Unless you want to owe me something."
Apollo was biting his tongue and still desperately willing himself to melt into the floor and ooze away... but something must have been wrong with Prosecutor Gavin, because rather than take advantage of the wide open opportunity to ridicule his rival's lingering lack of eloquence and general patheticness, he simply gave his permission to omit the difficult syllables from his name and continued what he was doing. Not sure how to take this show of mercy, Apollo only slightly shook his head in response to the offer of cream and sugar and awkwardly mumbled: "... Black's fine... Gavin..."
He picked up the coffee mug to cradle close to his face, and took a long sip while Gavin explained himself. Mmmm... rich people coffee. There had to be some ulterior motive for this, for being welcomed when he was messy and shitfaced, and then shown so much consideration now as a haggard piece of sludge glued to the sofa -- annoyingly cool celebrities just didn't do that. But his brain was still too foggy to imagine what that motive could be, and Gavin's defence was simple enough that Apollo could do little but accept it at face-value.
Technically, Gavin had offered to make him food at one point... but this couldn't possibly have been what he was thinking of when he'd done so. "... Guess you've learned your lesson not to make me any promises..."
Tumblr media
Apollo's next mouthful of coffee nearly went down the wrong way as he tried to suppress his immediate reaction to Gavin's final comment; he managed to safely swallow his drink, but not to hide the wide, doey look in his bloodshot eyes as he stared at the prosecutor like a defenceless animal trusting a hunter not to shoot it. "O-off... the record...? Y'mean it...?"
His bracelet wasn't signalling a lie, and the little flair of German at the end made it much harder to believe that Klavier's weird amenability was actually that of a third, nicer Gavin brother who had taken his place. So then... had all this just been leading up to...? "What do I owe you? I'm, uh. Fresh outta first-borns."

"I was keeping out of music...though I didn't really want to. And most people think I have actually quit by this point--I used to balance music and law more easily, but since Daryan..." Klavier sighs, and doesn't feel like saying anything else about it for now.
He falls quiet as Apollo goes on, at first willing to let the offer of harsher feedback to pass before Apollo adds more. It made me want to understand what you have to say.
That was...a first. For Apollo, specifically, who had been quick to say he didn't really like music like what this almost-album was shaping up to be. And it had been a while since Klavier had heard the same sentiment from anyone else, so wrapped up in his own head about it as he was.
He waits, mulling over his words as he lets Apollo finish his thought. After a few moments of quiet, he tentatively starts.
Tumblr media
"...Music has kind of been how I express myself since I became more independent, when I was at Themis." Klavier fiddles with the handle of the cup in his hands. "Being able to write music was an outlet for me. Some people journal or whatever; for me, it was songwriting. It was freeing, being able to say what I wanted that way. And then...well. You know what's happened to the Gavinners."
And Kristoph. Even if he isn't mentioned, Klavier can feel his brother hovering behind him, watching and judging.
"...I usually can control exactly what I want a song to sound like. But since that concert....I don't know. It hasn't worked. Nothing worked. I couldn't come up with anything--or, if I could, it was total garbage." He swallows again, thinking. He shakes his head after a moment. "Absolute garbage until earlier this week, and then...everything I'd been trying to write has the audacity to come out after all this time. And these aren't even the same songs I'd been trying to write for years, it's this...this jumbled up mess that somehow works more than anything else has in ages. Frustrated...is putting it mildly."
"...But I'm glad you think it's something worth listening to." He smiles in spite of himself. "Worth understanding."
"I kind of thought you did quit," Apollo confessed. Doing a gig at a high school and getting unwillingly dragged onto stage at an open mic seemed... washed-up, from Apollo's perspective. Not like someone who was earnestly working on their next platinum record. "I remember you saying at one point you were keeping out of music."
Of course, that was ages ago now, but Klavier hadn't said much about it since. And still hadn't really said much, in that email, besides that he was keeping this new album close to his chest.
"I could always be meaner if you'd rather. But honestly, it's worth listening to. Even if it's not the kind of music I enjoy..." Hearing what Klavier had spent so long writing was like getting a little glimpse of a part of him that he hadn't been allowed to see, and maybe Apollo had been waiting for that part to not be what he expected. Being surprised meant that there was a deeper person waiting to be engaged with. "... It made me want to understand what you have to say."
Tumblr media
"Well, I've had enough cases like that to be able to imagine, but... there's no crooked witnesses throwing wrenches in your case when you're writing a song, right? Isn't it just you, doing whatever you want?"
He still didn't get how Klavier could have spent years chipping away at new material without being aware of what it was going to sound like in the end, or how he could write something for himself and still have it turn out wrong according to his own standards. Not that it mattered one way or the other; the ins-and-outs of the creative process were just beyond Apollo's ken, probably. He tried to sum up what he should be taking away:
"But what I'm getting is, you were frustrated with what you were making before, but you aren't now? You took a six-month blink and changed your mind or something?" (Did it take six months to write a song? It must, if Klavier had been sitting on his solo debut for this long.) "The important part is that you're happy with it, I guess... even if you thought you weren't making something this dramatic."

"I'll still do what I can, even if it's just reminding you that you're not going crazy--better to have something to support those popsicle sticks, ja?" Klavier hums for a moment.
He taps his chin. "Funny you should mention hitting the books...I had literally just been thinking about trying to find what nots I still have from my school days. If I manage to locate them, I can send them your way? Once I make them a bit less nonsensical or outright translate them."
The prospect is admittedly exciting. Klavier has been sorting through a number of things lately, but his old school materials was something he'd actually look forward to finding and sorting through. Here's hoping none had cringe-worthy lyrics scribbled into the margins.
Tumblr media
"He will, of that I'm certain." He'd yelled at Klavier for working over the holidays, once. But then had resigned himself to letting Klavier retain some of his workhorse habits. "So if you need to escape any and all toilet cleaning, you're welcome over. I'll make you something more than just a sandwich, this time." He winks.
Apollo gave a grateful nod. "Unfortunately, I think most of what I’ll need to ask probably won’t be anything you’ll have the answer to, either – unless you know how to build a fair trial system out of popsicle sticks and religious rites. But I’ll really appreciate being able to pick the brain of someone more experienced than me, anyway… I’m sure I’ll need the sanity check.”
To be honest, Apollo was still working on the petty part of him that felt threatened by his (former?) courtroom rival being so much more seasoned than himself for being so close to his age; even if much of that time had been spent skiving off with his band, Prosecutor Gavin still had seven years on him, and was clearly more comfortable in the courtroom for it. But no matter how much it made him feel like an idiot in comparison when the genius-legal-prodigy-slash-pretentious-rock-star seemed to always have all the answers, that experience was something he looked up to, and he was looking forward to learning whatever he could from him along the way.
“I’ll keep the breaks in mind, thanks.” He wasn’t sure how many times a day he could get away with yelling ’APOLLO JUSTICE IS FINE!!!’ before his new neighbours complained, but thankfully there was plenty else for him to do. “I have a lot to catch up on – Khura'inese history and the language and everything – so I’ll be spending whatever free time I get studying. I know it probably doesn’t sound very relaxing, but I’m kind of excited to hit the books.”
Tumblr media
“Hah, my office will be closed, but I’m not under any illusions that it’ll be a vacation. Even if I don’t need a whole other plane for my own work, I’m positive Mr Wright will have me cleaning the toilet again the second I show my face at the Agency. But if Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth gives you a holiday, I’ll find a way to escape and drop by.”

Klavier watches quietly as Apollo speaks, very clearly teetering closer and closer to the very limits of how far his pride could be wounded. Understandable, yes. Apollo is, technically, still something of a rookie in their field.
"…Just Gavin is fine. And that certainly tracks for my brother's standards." Klavier smiles faintly in spite of himself--less because of the mention of his brother, though, and more for it still being a sticking point for his former employees.
"Not a surplus of sandwiches, no." He falls quiet as he thinks over how best to answer Apollo's questions aside from that, turning his attention back to the coffee maker so he could at least pull through on the caffiene request. He lets out a breath, considering just how much he feels like saying.
"…I may not have to be responsible for you if you come to me drunk, but the least I can do is make sure you (or anyone in your place) is at least looked after to a degree, no?" He pours a big cup of coffee, setting it gently on the table and asking Apollo would need cream or sugar--he assumed no, but better to ask. But then he goes on to add, "Could I have turned you away? Certainly. But you messaged me to take me up on something I offered to you…and I felt like honoring it, even if I knew you weren't in top condition."
Klavier is well aware that he is a diva, and that he is a people pleaser. It's very much just his way. Even if it's infuriatingly difficult to understand for some.
Tumblr media
"…I'm content to strike this little adventure off the record, so to speak. For your piece of mind, ja?"
Apollo hadn't really expected any different, given their proximity to law enforcement, but it was good to be on the same page as Prosecutor Gavin when it came to how sober one needed to be to operate a vehicle. Should this situation ever be reversed in the future (as if), Apollo could count on him having that much common sense, at least.
Was he feeling alright? Far from it, but, "I'm fine...-ish. I brought this on myself, so don't feel like... you're responsible for me or something, just 'cos you're the unlucky guy whose door I turned up at." He glanced at the pillow he'd pushed aside and the blanket still tangled around one of his knees. Too late to insist that he didn't need to be taken care of while he was on a bender, after he'd just been tucked in like a little kid.
He could believe that hospitality was a trait Klavier had picked up from his brother. Mr Gavin had always impressed the importance of treating visitors to the office to a high standard, and even as a lowly intern Apollo had been on the receiving end himself more than once, when he would turn up for work after an all-nighter or falling apart from nerves only to be served a warm drink and guided to a quiet corner to rest. But of course, he would be gently reprimanded the whole while for looking weary or incompetent in front of clients, and he highly doubted that he'd have been met with as much tolerance had he had shown up legless and smelling of booze.
"Well... what he said to me was there's nothing more important than my reputation, so... sorry if I'm not reassured by the distinction of being 'not the worst drunk Pronsecutor Gavin has ever seen'." That bar was probably so low it was underground. "I mean-- Probbecutor Gavin. Prornescutor-- Ponser-- Porse-- ... fuck."
Tumblr media
Doing real great with that reputation, Justice.
"Why would you want to deal that? Do you have a surplus of amazing sandwiches you need to get rid of or something?"

"Ha! If you wish, then I can draft something for you." Klavier winks, smile still wide on his face. "I'll do what I am able to help, really--I will answer any question, even if I don't answer it immediately."
Now his mind was whirring through possible pieces of advice he could offer--his thoughts drifted to all he learned while in school, trying to recall the exact lessons. Surely he still had some of his notes, he remembered putting it all in a box.
Tumblr media
"Ah! Well, good to hear you have a vacation planned out already. Though I at least hope it won't be as bad as you imagine..." The it probably will be worse goes unsaid, and it's probably better that way. "You probably have your own ideas on how to relieve stress, so all I'll say is something I did during the height of the restructuring here was take a few minutes where I could to do something small to relax. Listening to music for me, but for you it could be anything. Take any breaks you can."
"You'll likely be busy visiting your other friends next time you're stateside, but I'll say now that you're welcome to drop in if you feel like it!" Klavier needed the reminders to take breaks himself, otherwise he'd work himself into needing sick leave. He should take his own advice a bit more. But his mouth quirks. "I think the point of a vacation, though, is to avoid hiring a second plane to bring your work with you..."
“Can I get that in writing?” Apollo asked sheepishly. It was mostly a joke, but part of him was already imagining having to present Gavin with his own signature when he started to protest about Apollo taking full advantage of his very generous offer. “Minus the part about barging into your apartment – I promise you’ll get plenty of warning before the next time I’m stateside again.”
He realized, when he caught the novel warmth in Gavin’s expression and instinctively knew it to be genuine, that at some point he had forgotten about his bracelet. He didn’t need to have been paying so much attention to it in the first place – he would feel it regardless if it reacted to any dishonesty – but his anxiety over how Gavin would react to his story, to him, had simply vanished somewhere along the way. And it was such a relief to see him smile and immediately trust it that the warmth easily filled Apollo’s chest, too.
But now that it was remembered, Apollo’s fingers were back on his bracelet, spinning it idly around his wrist. Was it looser now…?
Tumblr media
“Speaking of… I’ll try to be back to visit as often as I can, but–” He shrugged. “Who knows how that’ll turn out. I’m honestly a little worried about being buried alive in case files and getting trapped at my bench in the High Court forever…
"But I already told Nahyuta my office is closed between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so if I don’t make it to LA before that, you can count on seeing me then! Even if I need to bring a whole other plane full of paperwork with me.”

"You're not the first person to criticize my music, and you won't be the last. I'd have quit a long time ago if I couldn't handle it." There's a slight smile in his tone--proud of having made it this far--but it doesn't stay for long.
He quietly sips at his tea, swallowing around the uneasy lump in his throat. "...You were actually kinder on it than I expected. I was anticipating you panning it entirely." Which is true, he'd assumed Apollo would hate all of it. But having some good notes in there was a pleasant surprise.
He falls quiet at the mention of the emotions behind the lyrics, this set of songs not being what he had been picturing. It was hard to articulate it, especially with his thoughts as frazzled as they were.
"...The intensity was not something I pictured, no. It's not a bad thing, though. The law enforcement angle the Gavinners had isn't something I can really do anymore." Klavier pauses again, trying to think of how best to phrase it so Apollo could understand. "I guess the best way to explain...it's like a debut case not going the way you picture it. Or getting a case that seems to be one thing, but it turns out to be something else entirely."
Tumblr media
"I'd only ever imagined what might end up on an album I did by myself. Nothing ever..." He sighs. "But anything I tried didn't work. It didn't feel right. So I gave up after a while. Then...I was writing these in the blink of an eye."
"Good," Apollo replied immediately. No matter how much he thought that the world would be a more quiet and beautiful place without Klavier's music blaring in it, he didn't want to be the one responsible for him giving up something he clearly loved. "I don't think I could take the pressure if my music critic debut was going to have that much power."
Klavier didn't sound good. He didn't sound awful, but he didn't sound like he'd taken the hint to get some rest before he'd picked up the phone... and he didn't sound very ready to talk.
"Sorry I couldn't give you a better review, but... I dunno what you were expecting." Hopefully nothing he'd written had come as a surprise, if Klavier had even read it -- Apollo suspected that his opinion of the music wasn't really what Klavier wanted out of this, but he wasn't going to push. Not hard, anyway. "It's a lot different from your old stuff, though. Kinda caught me by surprise."
Tumblr media
"And it's not what you thought you were going to come out with either, huh?" That part of the email hadn't made a lot of sense to him, but he chalked it up to the impenetrable headspace of a pretentious creative. How could you write something and not have it turn out like you expected? "So... is that a good thing or a bad thing?"
"Your feelings about what you want to make are more important than mine, I should think."

The confirmation that no, Apollo would never be one to attempt to drink and drive, was a bit of a relief. Not that Klavier thought he would, but it was a good thing to be sure. "As I've prosecuted my fair share of cases involving drunk drivers, I am happy to hear that."
Tumblr media
"Worried me?" He pauses for a moment--of course, it wasn't as though Klavier was trying to be subtle about keeping an eye on his guest, so perhaps he should have known Apollo would pick up on it quickly. "Well, only a little when your first arrived. I've mostly just wanted to be sure you were feeling alright for the most part. Making sure you've got water, or something to eat. My brother was a stickler for making sure a guest was treated properly--said it was only appropriate to show such hospitality, no matter the circumstances. And you're honestly not the worst drunk who's kicked down my door--though, you didn't do either of those things, in case you're concerned."
Kristoph would probably not have let a drunk person anywhere near the Gavin household, of course--he had barely tolerated Daryan visiting while Klavier was at Themis. But the blonde was going to do as he pleased--and taking care of a peer and acquaintance (friend, really, at least to Klavier) was something he wanted to do.
"...Well, I could have, yes. But I wanted to." Klavier shrugs. "I guess it's a bit strange to hear, and unprofessional in your eyes...but it's not as though you're imposing on me that much. A grilled cheese and tomato soup isn't a five course meal..."
...But he's arguing the point now, isn't he? "I was merely offering if you wanted it, though, and I don't mean to force you to do anything you don't want to. Just take your time until you feel well, and we'll get your ride home sorted out."
Apollo released a grateful sigh of relief at Gavin's assertion that he didn't see him as the boozing type, even in light of last night's behaviour. He wasn't sure he believed it, but at the very least the point wasn't being debated and he didn't need to continue defending himself.
Automatically, he shook his head at the possibility of him getting behind the wheel in that state -- making his temples painfully complain. "... Nah, no chance of that," he clarified instead of continuing to rattle his abused brain in his skull, and took another drink of water in case it would help. He didn't have a car to drive anyway, but that wasn't the first reason such a thing was out of the question. "I have somebody who'd kill me for even considering it, if I ever ruined myself enough to think that's a good idea."
(Or rather... his ghost would.)

"But I didn't... make you worry, did I...?" Apollo wasn't sure which would be worse -- having inspired Prosecutor Gavin's amusement, or his concern. He may not have been at his most observant at the moment, but the way he was being looked over and repeatedly peeked at while Gavin went about his morning wasn't particularly subtle.
It made him even more self-conscious about how he must look right now, if that was possible. It was tempting to sprint to the bathroom to wash his face and fix his hair when he was told, but even if he trusted himself to stand up yet without regretting it, having to see in the mirror just how much he looked like shit might just be the killing blow to his pride. So he remained, safely self-pitying and leaning on the arm of the chesterfield for support and the small amount of cover it offered.
"You're not making me any more food!" he said firmly, by now able to recall what his goal had been in coming the night before and to feel properly humiliated about it. "It's bad enough I made you cook for me once already... You know you could'a just told me to suck it up and order a pizza, right?" (That probably would have been cheaper than getting a cab to Gavin's for his 'free food' anyway.)
