broadway/theater stuff thats either free, reduced in price or accessible outside of the big cities:
broadway in bryant park (nyc, free) - broadway show casts perform some of their biggest numbers in bryant park for free every summer
broadwayhd -a netflix-like online streaming service for broadway shows. costs $8.99 a month or one hundred dollars for a full year. also has plays, educational and behind the scenes programming and shows in other languages
kids night on broadway (nyc and nationwide) a program that allows kids under 18 to get a free ticket to a broadway show with one paying adult. this program also applies to certain touring shows across the country.
great performances - a program on the public broadcasting service (pbs) that shows high theater and behind the scenes documentaries about the theatrical process. this includes broadway and things like opera, ballet and concerts. free episodes are available online and can be found on local public television.
the following stage performances are available on DVD or in some form of home release: Rent, Les Mis (anniversary concerts), stomp, billy elliot, legally blonde, cats, Pippin, sweeney todd, sunday in the park with george, chess, oklahoma!, into the woods and others. Just about all of these can be found on retail sites.
todaytix (global): this site/app offers tickets to shows around the world for reduced, last minute prices. most big-ticket shows are really unaffordable but you can get tickets to some shows in the 10-30 dollar range (versus somewhere closer to 100). some tickets run as low as 5 dollars.
