This is part of the first chapter of a Cherik Grimm A/B/O AU I'm working on. Bleeeeeerrggg.

“This isn’t up for debate, Detective. She’s getting protective custody, and that’s that.” Portland PD’s Captain Charles Xavier was leaning back in his chair. His normally peaceful mien was replaced by consternation. He looked stoic, even in the sweltering heat of his office.

Erik resisted the urge to grind his teeth in front of Charles. “Captain Xavier, there’s no evidence that this is a targeted attack. Miss Frost is unconnected to our last victim. They’ve never met each other. They’re not even the same gender, or in the same field or income bracket. These are random attacks.”

“We can’t know that for sure. Just to be safe, I’m going to assign a detail.”

"That seems unnecessary." Erik wanted to say you didn’t push this hard when it was my aunt who needed protection, but that would just be petty. That was only five weeks ago now, and it still stung.

Charles sighed heavily and let his gaze wander off. It found its way back to Erik after a long moment. Charles leaned forward.

“Erik,” Charles sounded tired. Briefly, Erik thought he looked conflicted. “Whatever may or may not have happened last month aside, Miss Frost is a victim.” 

A seed of doubt crept into Erik’s mind, but he promptly stomped it out. I know what I saw! And you can’t convince me otherwise, no matter how you say it!

Charles must of read the look on his face, because he continued, “I don’t don’t know what’s going on between you and Miss Frost, but whatever it is, let it die.”

“Nothing’s going on,” Erik insisted.

Charles looked skeptical. “Really? Because you accused her of trying to kill your aunt, and you seem to think she’s involved in an attack that almost killed her.”

Erik tore his gaze away from Charles. “I know what I saw. She’s the woman I saw in the hospital last month. She drugged me. She tried to—“ Erik cut himself off. His boss thought he was crazy as it was. Next Erik would be telling him that Emma Frost was a hexenbiest and he was a Grimm. There was a lot he wanted to say.

“She’s a highly paid lawyer with no criminal past.”

Their eyes met. Erik wanted desperately to climb over the desk and cover Xavier’s mouth with his own, even as frustrated as he was. Or maybe because of it.

Charles lowered his voice again. “Do I need to take you off this assignment?”

“No, I can do it.” Erik settled in his chair, resigned. “I’m good at the weird ones.”

Charles smiled fondly. “That you are.”
