hey folks! I know, Rose was certainly kinda over the top confusing, so lemme break down what this update meant for y’ all in easy terms- especially the whole canon, non-canon and not canon thing. And, Meat or Candy, which is surprisingly important!
So, in this, Rose discusses Canon. Let’s make it simple- this whole thing is EXTREMELY meta. To put it one way- the entire body of Homestuck itself is canon. Everything else that happened after they went through the gate at the end of HS is Non-Canon. Things that didn’t happen at all, fan-based stuff, is not canon.
Canon is the makeup of what IS Homestuck. Things that have concrete proof, we know happened, we saw, watched, LOVED as it happened. You think of Homestuck, it’s a moment from Canon. The heroes passing the gate in Act 7 into the Credits was them leaving “true canon”. The events of the Credits and what happened after happened- but they didn’t contribute to the story or plot in a meaningful way. They’re more like an AU within the U itself, if that makes sense!
However, there were plots left hanging in Canon itself. Lord English wasn’t defeated, just contained. Both Vriska and (Vriska) are out there, and we don’t know what happened to them. The story isn’t finished. And, here’s where it gets a lil meta- because the story of HS still has holes, people expect it to be TODAY, the 10th anniversary, that all the holes get fixed. If nothing happened today, people would lose interest, and that’d be the end of Homestuck having a meaningful continuation- like missing the mark on a shot if that makes sense. It HAD to be today. And it’s not something that can be fixed with a measly epilogue at the end- he does need to go back into the main body of Homestuck to finish it, to give it a satisfying ending. He has to retcon it to finally give us the necessary finale. But does he want that? Wouldn’t it be nice to live a whispy life with the friends he neglected after coming through the gate? Maybe it’s time to settle down in this saccharine world instead of moping over what he missed.
Meat or candy?
Meat, a substantial, heavy meal, but maybe one that won’t feel as sweet- but the right choice.
Candy, a sweet, fast meal- but one you’ll forget about, and one that might not be as good in the long run.
A good, heavy, final end as they delve back into canon, or a lighthearted whisp of a memory in the Epilogue, leaving the story unfinished, just like eating candy instead of real food might mess with your diet.
