ii. smooth sailing
It’s been three days since you’ve signed the contract with your director and your coworker. Three days where you had second guessed every decision leading up to now. It seems like your director was right about this whole stunt after all, everyone's attention was on the film and the two of you now. It’s unsettling to feel like the entire world has eyes on you, but there was a feeling in you that prided in the fact you’ve made it this far, you only had to worry about your co-worker playing the part.
In all truthfulness, though, Furina was not a bad actor–far from it, actually. WIth a seemingly snap of a finger, she was able to completely shift her personality to another, as if it was lightwork. You’ve admired her talent for as long as you could remember–but it leaves a bitter taste on your tongue, knowing that despite all your hard work, it was truly nothing compared to someone with a natural ability.
She had texted you not long ago. Yesterday, 6 pm, and now, 3 pm, reminding you to dress up for this pretend-first-date she had taken the honor to set up.
Tumblr media
And now there you were, standing awkward infront of some cafe with a name too confusing to pronounce, it seemed to be popular with how many people were sitting in it. Warm golden lights seeped through hand-painted windows–this was the type of place you’d see when looking for stock images of cafes.
An intense smell of roasted coffee beans would greet you once you even step one foot inside, and you quickly look for your date so you wouldn’t seem like an idiot standing by the entrance.
Furina was already posing dramatically for nonexistent cameras, legs crossed while elegantly sitting on the chair.
“Well?” She said, mocking impatience. “Are you going to sit down or what?”
You could only roll your eyes at her, pulling the chair back and settling in the booth seat.
It didn’t take too long before some people started staring at the two of you–hushed whispers as they brought out their phones to take pictures. Why is THE Furina out on a date?
The silence was deafening. It didn’t even seem like you two were on a date, it was awkward, every time you tried to speak you’d hesitate and your hands would start to shake. You’re used to having a spotlight on you on set, never in public. This was your first time getting in a film for the festival and you didn’t even know it would get this big.
Not for the all-talented Furina, though. Apparently not. Because she just had to clear her throat, cross her arms, before beginning to fit into the role given to her immediately.
“Well… I’m getting a slice of lemon chiffon cake! It’s the most photogenic–it’ll look good on my feed, exactly matching the look of this place. Oh, and it’s tasty too. Naturally, it’s cake!”
You raise an eyebrow at her comment, “Did you just pick the place based on aesthetics?”
“Obviously. If we’re gonna be seen, we must be seen in the best light possible. It’s gonna be horrible if we’re unflattering, might as well play the part till the end, yes?”
“Thats…”
Oh, it was certainly something. Not once in your lifetime would you think you’d ever see Furina actually take this whole thing seriously. Maybe it’s because she’s effortlessly flawless–ever since you’ve started your acting career, you felt as if you had to play as someone perfect all the time, even if there were no cameras and flashes filling your entire vision. Even if you were in the privacy of your apartment. It was ridiculous enough that you couldn’t help but laugh–that small interaction was enough to ease the tension you were feeling.
You had called over a waitress and finished placing your orders. You two sat opposite of each other, the table was small enough that your knees almost bumped. All while waiting for your food to arrive, Furina insisted on taking several pictures. She pulls out her phone, angling it just so to capture a candid-looking selfie, head tilted, a small smile curving her lips.
“You should lean in,” She whispered without looking up at you at all. “It’ll look absolutely adorable.”
And so you did, not without hesitating for half a second, forcing a pitiful smile. The phone clicked, Furina stared at the photo critically, then hummed in satisfaction.
“Perfect!” She declared, “Authenticity achieved. You’re a natural at this.”
The photoshoot didn’t end there, unfortunately. You were forced to take a few photos of her, and she took three of you. You questioned her, why do we need to be taking photos of each other?
All she did was give you a giggle and reply with, “it’s for documentation purposes, you wouldn’t get it.”
For a few moments, you two sat in the busyness of the cafe, sun pooling in puddles on the floor–it reached her, almost like a halo clinging to the edges of her figure, the murmur of other conversations hushing yours, almost as if what you two were sharing was a private moment when in reality, it was far from it.
Furina rested her chin on her hand, studying you with bright, questioning eyes. It wasn’t the look of her usual self, scheming and plotting something that could potentially bring all attention to the two of you. It was… curiosity. As if she was almost interested in you, a genuine way that made you feel a little uneasy.
“You’re stiff,” She said bluntly.
You blink, a little taken aback by the sudden insult. “I’m trying to be normal.”
“That’s the problem! You’re trying, you must be effortless, natural!”
“I don’t think being effortless is a skill you can just summon on command.” You shook your head, crossing your arms and giving her a look.
Furina giggled, not the usual theatrical act, but a smaller, real laugh that caught you off guard. And before you could reply–your orders had already arrived. Two delicate plates painted to perfection, almost as if carved with actual gold with the amount of skill poured into it. Both slices of cake looked too pretty to eat, it almost made you feel guilty if you ruined it.
Furina wasted no time, however, snapping a quick picture before using a fork and diving into the lemon chiffon, sighing dramatically. “Absolute heaven,” She leaned across the table, taking another forkful of the cake and putting it right infront of you. “You must try.”
“What?”
“Try it!” She waves the fork, “Open up, come on, it’s just a bite.”
This is how rumors start, a few stolen photos, exchanged words from fan to fan–there was that feeling in you that this was wrong, you forget that you were simply on a pretend date.
Odd. It’s almost as if you’ve completely forgotten you actually had the contract for a second.
“I suppose a single bite won't hurt anyone.”
It was light and sweet. The perfect balance of sweetness and sourness–vanilla and the taste of lemon clashed, but in a pleasing way. Furina grinned at your reaction.
“See?” She nudges you, “You can be charming when you try.”
You wipe your mouth with a clean napkin, “Stop being all smug—And yes, I am quite charming.”
“Ugh, whatever.”
Sure, people were giving weird looks, but that was the point in the end. To gather enough attention for the film, be it scandal or not. Your moment with Furina put your guard down, you hadn’t noticed that people were already snapping pictures of the two of you. Phones peeking over a booth across the room, or barely-hidden glances by two teenagers whispering. It didn’t take long until blurry photos surfaced online.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mission success, you think to yourself.
The sun was nearly set by the time you two went out of the cafe, the sky shifting to a soft, glowing purple and yellow. Streets were spilled with the light from the lamps, the air cold and thin.
“I think this first date went well,” You say, not particularly to anyone, but Furina seems to notice.
She hummed in agreement, letting herself breathe in the fresh air after being stuck in the cafe for so long. “Two days from now again, then? I got tickets to an aquarium showcase nearby.”
“Sure.”
Maybe it was going well, maybe not. But for the first time, it didn’t feel like you two were pretending at all. There comes the price of being a great actor, you suppose. You’re not quite sure what's real or fake when you’re around someone as great as Furina–she could just be pretending, much like you, but what if it was real all along?
What if.
But there's no need to bother yourself with such distracting thoughts. There are things you need to focus on–the film, more pretend dates, you need to keep your act up at least until the festival. That is roughly… Two weeks from now.
Two weeks, you’re sure you can handle that atleast.
Tumblr media
The wind tugged lightly at your leather coat as you leaned against the railing, just by the entrance of the aquarium Furina suggested you two go to. It was across the plaza, the glass making it seem as if it was glinting in the late afternoon sun. A large banner saying “DATE NIGHT: 50% OFF!” flapped noisily above you.
No wonder Furina got those tickets.
Speak of the devil. She was running towards  you, huffing, pure disappointment on her face–clearly unimpressed by her unprofessionalism. She had shown up fifteen minutes late–though she begs to differ, saying she was fashionably late, immediately launching to a dramatic retelling of how her hair refused to cooperate and how her original outfit suddenly disappeared into the comfort of her own mattress.
She leaned beside you with arms crossed, chin tilted up like she was trying to intimidate the building. “Alright, we need a game plan.”
“For an… aquarium?”
“For our date,” She said, gesturing air quotes. “We can’t just walk in there like clueless idiots. There has to be moments, photo worthy angles, do you get what I mean?”
You shook your head once more, “No, not really. Did you want to storyboard this? Is that why you were late?”
“Just…! No–No I didn’t storyboard.” She huffed as if she was anything less than offended by what you said. “I’m improvising, like a true actress. But even improv needs structure.”
Furina took out her phone and flipped the camera, her palm reaching to bounce her curls to fix them or something. “You’ll be on my left,” She added absentmindedly. “That’s your better side.”
“Excuse me? Are you saying I’m ugly on the other side?”
“Precisely.”
“Rude.”
“That I am not! Just telling the truth. Are we going to get in or not?”
There was a flicker of something behind her eyes–a kind of nervous excitement she wasn’t quite able to hide behind the dramatics. She was trying, in her own way, atleast. Maybe not just for the cameras.
You let a beat of silence pass before speaking up, “You know, we could just… Have fun. Be normal. See some fish?”
Yet she still looked at you like you’ve suggested committing treason. “Did you forget we’re doing this for PR?”
“It’s easier to fake a relationship when you don’t plan every interaction like it’s a play. Trust me, go along with it.”
Her mouth opened, ready to go talk back–but then, surprisingly, she quieted down. “Fine,” Finally slipping her phone into her bag. “Let’s do it your way.”
You offered your arm, “Shall we, your majesty?
She stared at your outstretched elbow, deadpan, scoffing when she pushed you slightly. “Never. Say that again.”
Tumblr media
The inside of the aquarium was a hush of blue tinted light and soft murmurs, the soft whirring of the machine that clears the inside of the tanks. It smelled faintly of saltwater, obviously, you two were at an aquarium. The light would flicker from time to time-mostly due to the huge fish blocking it above you. You passed under an archway, casting rippling shadows over your face as if the building itself had sunk to the ocean floor.
The deeper you went in the showcase, the dimmer it got. The tank glowed at that point–schools of silver fish, a sea turtle drifting from time to time, its shadow vast against the wall. Furina’s earlier dramatic theatrics died down. She was uncharacteristically quiet, simply because of the awe present in her expression. She stopped posing for invisible cameras. You stopped watching for them.
There was a large viewing tunnel that dipped beneath the shark tank, Furina walked a little ahead of you, a bounce in her step you couldn’t ignore no matter how hard you tried. She looked up to follow the path of a hammerhead gliding overhead.
“Think they can see us?” She asked, whispering, she might've seen the signs to keep quiet.
“Maybe. What, you scared?”
“Ha! Far from it!”
“Shh, not so loud.”
A gentle lull settled between you, the sort of silence that wasn’t exactly awkward. It was comfortable. You two went from one tank to the next, the sound of muffled waves overtaking the sound of your own breathing. It was comfortably silent in the aquarium.
Then, you found a reef tank.
It was massive–floor to ceiling, golden light that mimicked sunbeams through real water. Bright corals, you could’ve sworn there were some clownfish peeking out, sea anemones swayed with grace by the currents. The two of you stood in front of it, closer now without realizing at all, if it weren't feeling your hands brushing across her knuckles–you wouldn’t even think about getting too close to her.
She didn’t seem to mind, though. You were the one who stepped away, she was all too in awe of the fish. Seems like she was more interested in it than you, after all. You need to remind yourself that your relationship is fake, a PR stunt that your director thought of. Might as well make this trip worthwhile, so you try to speak up.
“Look,” You murmured, pointing to a tiny, almost transparent shrimp hidden behind two corals. “It’s a little shrimp. You can barely see it.”
You turned to Furina, trying to see if you caught her attention with that. Her gaze wasn’t on the tank.
It was at you.
She looked at you with reason. It wasn’t a blank or distracted gaze, her eyes followed your every movement, the way you blinked, maybe the slow rise of your chest, or the way the light hit your face. Her eyes were wide, unguarded, you could almost see inside her very soul. You caught it just long enough to recognize it before she had blinked, panicked, and snapped her attention back to the tank.
“What is it?” You asked, carefully.
Furina cleared her throat sharply, almost as if she were the one sulking. “Nothing. You had something on your face, that's all.” She gestured vaguely towards your cheek, fingers fluttering like an afterthought. Not once did she glance your way . “Lint. Crumbs. I don't know.”
You wiped your face, skeptical of her reason. “Really?”
She turned to look at you quickly, nodding too fast to be normal. “Yeah–yeah, it’s gone now.”
The fishes continued to swim in front of you, there was even a turtle waving by your peripheral, but you paid no mind. You chose to look at her for a moment longer, not saying anything. She didn’t try to meet your eyes again, instead, she fiddled with a loose thread on her sleeve. A ghost of a smile present on her lips.
“I see,” You say finally.
There was no lint, or crumb. But you didn’t push the topic further.
Instead you turned back to the tank, letting the silence guide the two of you again–but this time, it felt like it changed, there were unspoken words that none of you decided to say. Like something had shifted, and not a single one tried to think about what to do about it.
“Tell me something,” Furina said suddenly, her voice quiet.
You tilt your head, looking at her once more–she still hasn’t gathered the courage to stare back. “What kind of something?”
“Anything. About you–not something in your ‘press kit.’”
You paused, a little surprised by the question. “I used to sneak out of school to sit by the riverbank. Just to listen to the water. Pretend I was anywhere else.”
“That’s so lonely. Were you a loser back then?” Furina smiled, she tried to play off her question in order not to raise suspicions.
“It was peaceful. I didn’t mind.”
She regretted her previous comment, choosing to stay silent before talking.
“I used to lie about being afraid of the dark so someone could stay with me. A–as a kid, of course, but that wasn’t because I was scared, I just didn’t want to be alone. Neuvillette, my friend, would often accompany me.”
“That’s not lonely?” You asked gently. This was when you realized exactly that you really didn’t know the first thing about your co-actor, behind the staged expressions, there really was something human behind it all. Even though you yourself were an actor, you couldn’t believe that someone like Furina… You shook your head before the thought continued.
She shrugged, “It’s different when you choose to do it.”
“Fair enough. You know, I used to get in trouble for sneaking out. My teachers would always message my parents, "I'd get quite an earful at home.”
She laughs softly, genuine. “Yeah?”
You hum, “Yeah. There was this one time I–”
A soft buzz lit up both your phones at the same time. Simultaneous vibrations, the pings suddenly multiplying like crazy. So, you both reached for your pockets.
There it was, a new tweet from your director’s official account.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Furina grumbled, a noise coming from the back of her throat. “She did not.”
“Oh, she did,” You say, showing her your phone screen.
“Ugh,” She groaned, rolling her head. “She’s going to start printing hoodies next. I just knew this was gonna happen–I should’ve never agreed!”
But her tone wasn’t exactly annoyed. She was already typing something back, a long message to your director and to the tweet. You watched her, not just her practiced scowl, but the little smile tugging at the corner of her mouth.
As if the idea of more time together wasn’t quite the worst thing in the world.
Maybe it wasn’t.
Tumblr media
You two stepped outside of the aquarium after what felt like forever. The air was colder, the night wrapped around you like a blanket. The city streets gleaming with neon signs. You pause by the exit, unsure if the evening has been a success or just an elaborate act you two put up. Still, the soft glow from the signs above makes it feel like a scene from a film–one that you and Furina are just playing out, even if no cameras were there, as cliche as it sounded.
Furina pulls out her phone, a mischievous grin on her lips. “I think it’s time for a photo. We can’t leave this place without the proof.”
“Whatever,” You waved her off.
Though, you still agree. Even if you’re getting used to how natural this whole “date for the PR” thing felt despite it all being fake. Furina walks up to a passerby, flashing a smile that has a certain calculation behind it–practiced, she’s learned how to perform even in these moments.
With a small flash, the photo was taken. The stranger hands the phone back, and Furina looks a little disgusted by the angle.
“This is not good. How exactly am I gonna post this?”
“You won't die with one bad photo.”
“I–You–Fine! Don’t blame me if we start getting backlash because of this… This.. Poor excuse for a picture.”

i. the deal
The rain had already stopped, but the cold lingered.
You took a seat on one of the flimsy foldable chairs off on the side of a set, still soaked to the bone. You watched as the water dripped from the cardboard roof of the fake housing, it glimmered on the grey plastic pavement, as if the world within the set hadn’t realized the scene was already over. This was it. Your director had shouted the final cut long ago, but you’d be lying if you said that it didn’t make you feel… sad.
After the painful months of rehearsing, practicing, memorizing–tirelessly practicing your emotions in front of a mirror, in front of your co-worker–it was all finally over.
Tumblr media
What will you do now? This movie has become a part of your daily routine that you’re unsure of how to move on now that it's over. Do you just carry on with your life? How do you even do that?
You had just finished filming the ‘break-up’ scene between the main characters. Obviously, the fake rain was much needed, and they ended up spraying ice cold water on both of you. Cliche, the entire film was obviously cliche. But you hoped that this would blow up somehow–you had poured your heart and soul into acting your character, if it didn’t succeed, that’s most likely going to be saying something about your talent as an actor.
“You did well!” Navia walks towards you with a jump in each step, excited for both you and your entire cast. She had been invited for a special ‘behind-the-scenes’ by your director in hopes that the Spina Di Rosula could offer some financial aid in the production.
You gave her a tired smile, slumping a little further in the chair and muttering a thank you to one of the makeup artists as she wrapped a towel around you. The warmth spreads throughout your body–offering some comfort. “I’m just glad it’s done.” You sighed, “I’m exhausted. I think my soul left my body when we filmed take 23.”
Navia only laughs at your state, reaching out to poke your forehead–to which you groan at in annoyance. “Didn’t you say acting was your passion? Don’t back out now, you signed up for this.”
“I mean–yeah, but still. It’s tiring.”
“Well,” She nudges you awake, and you shuffle around the chair to sit up straight.
“Well?”
“Well, if you’re done drowning in your sorrows, do you wanna go out for some cake? To celebrate your film.” She brings out a card and puts it close to her face, dramatically showing it off. “On me.”
If she’s offering to go to a dessert shop with you, then that is very  tempting. Not only has the past few weeks been tiring for you, but you felt like you’re obligated to just a small, tiny, harmless break. Right?
You glance to your co-worker, who is now looking incredibly proud about finishing her work. And back to your friend, Navia. “Sure thing.”
You leaned back on your seat, letting your eyes wander–the set was so messy, the crew had slowly been disassembling what was your world for the past three months, then, you looked at her.
Furina was brushing away her damp hair by one of the vanity mirrors. The soft light glowing against her skin, she was casually fixing herself up as if she hadn’t just sobbed under a rain machine. She was already in a fluffy robe, clearly ready to head back home and relax for the rest of the day. Yet her posture was steady–her gaze was sharp, all while having a small smile on her face. You weren’t sure if she was still acting or if that was just how she always was.
“Should we invite Furina as well?”
“Well… That’s up to you, if you can handle her temperament.” You recall how Furina is sometimes–loud, boastful. Prideful. But that’s how others view her, in truth, she’s an incredibly sweet person. Speak of the devil. As if her name was something that was able to summon her immediately–she walks towards the two of you.
“[Name], you’re quite talented yourself. Your acting almost had me in tears” Furina says, brushing nonexistent dust from her robe with a style that would fit better on stage than in a casual conversation, much like this one.
“You were the one crying, though.” You deadpanned.
She ignored that.  “I could only wonder what you were thinking about while on-stage. If ever another film requires an actress, I’ll be sure to sign you up, yes?”
“Thanks, I was thinking about how I’d be able to pay rent this month.”
A sarcastic reply that caught Navia’s attention, though she suppressed her giggle with a cough. Furina felt a little awkward at this. But your breath caught–just slightly. She liked working with you? But you aren't  sure if you want to reject or accept that offer. Don’t get it wrong–you love acting, but a project after another? That’s sure to leave you burnt out from your passion.
“Sorry, I’ll…I’ll take that as a compliment,” You murmured.
Furina hums, before shaking her head so suddenly. “Oh, sorry. Were you two talking about something? I hope I didn’t interrupt. I mean–I’m sure whatever I had to say was better anyway.”
You and Navia could only stare at her, giggling nervously all to herself, before your friend cleared her throat.
“No. We were just thinking about going to a dessert shop later.” Navia says, “Do you want to come along?”
Tumblr media
The cafe Navia picked was hidden between two flower shops and an alleyway. You had to walk a somewhat shady cobblestone path just to get through–but it looked like a little hideout in the middle of the busy Fontaine–small windows fogged by warm air, the glow of the lanterns reflecting on the ground. If not for your friend, you might’ve missed this spot completely.
It smelled like vanilla and baked treats. Cinnamon, too, the kind that is always stuck to the back of your throat and reminds you of cold winter nights. The chocolate drink you’d hold in your hand, or from the candies sprawled out on a baking tray.
You sat on the booth by the window, overlooking the back of buildings. It wasn’t exactly a pretty sight, but there were really no people watching to be done either. The area was completely devoid of people, actually. The cushions were a little uneven, the table just a tad bit too small, yet perfect despite its imperfections.
Navia long disappeared to the counter, already halfway through ordering some desserts that sounded as if a witch had named some new spells than a menu item. Your eyes wandered around the tiny shop, colorful striped walls and decorations, the floor was a dark wood to contrast the brightness of the shop. You glimpsed at the stack of macarons in the display case, delicate treats dusted with powdered sugar you were sure was enough to get someone to be sick of it, and huge slices of cake that were too pretty to even eat.
Furina dragged the chair in front of you and settled in it.
And for a moment, neither of you spoke.
She gathers the courage to break the silence. “You looked… different,” Furina said, her voice light and teasing. Almost as if she was trying to stir up gossip with you. “After the final ‘cut!,’ I mean.”
She tries to imitate the director's voice, which gets your attention. You glance up from your cup of water, trying to shake off the exhaustion you were feeling. “What? Different, how?”
Furina hummed, her eyes narrowing as if she was trying to unravel some mystery case. Her chin resting on the palm of her hand, head slightly tilted, as if her hat weighed heavy enough to do so. “Hmm…
“Tragic. Haunted. Like you were some hero at the end of a war film watching your lover sail away. Yeah… Very French cinema of you, how fancy.”
You blinked.
She just lets out a little laugh at your confusion, “I’m just saying, it was very you in that moment. Very dramatic, ten out of ten!” Her fingers tapped  against her teacup rhythmically.
Was she talking about the moment you realized the film was over? You just sat there, suddenly, and somewhat started to zone out. You can hear her words, yet none seems to come into your brain. You think back to the set, the endless rehearsals, the constant pressure to need to be someone else. Maybe for Furina it was easy, for someone to be so popular and naturally gifted–you had worked hard for your spot in the industry.
And she was making fun of it, just like that?
“I guess I was just thinking too hard,” You mumbled.
She had stopped laughing, opting for awkward chuckles to fill the silence.
“Thinking about what?” Furina asked. What, was she curious about your life story?
You dropped your gaze to your hands, nervously tracing the ends of the table. You couldn’t see her eyes exactly. “I don’t know. This movie’s been… my world for the past few months. I don’t know what to do without it.”
You’d given so much of yourself for the film, to the role, to the never-ending game of just pretending. The lines blurred after a while, you found yourself and your role blending in together, had you lost yourself mid-production? You even left out the part where you had been worried about paying off whatever rent your landlord will ask of you each month. You didn’t know what to do when you watched the curtain fall, what would be left of you when the applause for the film viewing stopped?
What now?
She watches you quietly, and for some reason, that feels even more vulnerable than speaking your mind to her.
In a quiet tone, she says, “Not tragic, then. Just a little lost.”
Right. She had offered to sign you up to whatever acting gig was in the market. You gain the strength to look at her, and immediately you felt the weight of her gaze on you. Not entirely judgemental, just understanding the situation you were in. As if she’d know.
Your fingers stilled, thoughts scattered across whatever imaginary script you were holding onto for dear life. What are you doing?
“Sometimes I wonder if I act better when I’m not playing myself,” You said before you could stop yourself. Internally? You cursed yourself for being open. She was just your co-worker, not your therapist, not your friend. You wanted to curl up and disappear, why did you just say that?
Furina was no longer joking around. No longer teasing, no longer smiling. Her mouth opened, and closed, like she was choosing the words she was about to say next carefully.
“That’s…” She starts slowly, “Careful, you’ll lose yourself if you think like that.”
You didn’t expect this. You didn’t expect anyone to actually take your words seriously. You tried to downplay your statement–but you couldn’t quite find the words.
“Do you get that feeling often?”
There was just a brief silence between you two. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but you felt exposed the longer it stayed.
Furina’s voice softened, “I... just happened know what you’re talking about.” She leans forward slightly, laying her arms on the table, eyes never once leaving yours.
For a moment, you allowed yourself to blindly believe she did.
“I–”
Before you could respond, Navia came back, clattering plates onto the table with the satisfied huff of someone who won a battle against her indecisiveness. “One stack of macarons for you, some water–and milk, not sure why I ordered milk though–also ordered a few more things.”
You raised an eyebrow, putting on an act as if you didn’t just talk about the most sensitive topic of your life to the girl across from you. “Seriously? Who is even eating all of this?
Furina beamed, reaching for a blue macaron. “What? They were calling to me.”
“You have a sugar addiction.”
“I’d rather call it refined taste, thank you very much.”
Navia laughed. “‘Refined taste,’  she says. You’re eating a stack of those, you do know that right?”
Furina simply ignores her entirely, popping the sweet in her mouth and humming with satisfaction.
Seeing her like this… Off-set, off-script. It was new, as if she was an entirely new character. You admit that you hadn’t taken the time to really get to know your co-worker (you were simply too afraid to do so) but it feels nice to have someone in your line of work understand how you felt. Having a group of friends–although they were technically just two people–was also a nice feeling.
You reach to grab a macaron, but a hand steals it first. You look for the culprit to see Furina, already finished with it.
“Oh, were you about to get that? My apologies.”
You take back every word you just said.
Tumblr media
You really weren’t expecting a call this early in the morning–least of all from your director, Qiu. Begrudgingly, you somehow managed to drag yourself away from your cozy mattress and pick up the phone call while making your morning tea.
“Come to the studio,” She’d say, far too cheerful for 8 in the morning. “Bring Furina with you. I have an idea.”
An idea. She was certainly full of them–and none were ever good enough to be woken up at eight on a weekend.
Now, you sat in one of the small meeting rooms with Furina beside you, sipping a perfectly made tea as if she had owned the building. She probably did–her legs were crossed, sunglasses still on, (for god sake, she was indoors!) and clearly bored out of her mind.
Across you, your director leaned forward on her desk, smiling.
“So,” She started. “Let’s talk about some PR before the official release.”
You glanced at Furina, no words had to be exchanged for you to know she was already feeling skeptic about this so-called ‘idea’ of the director.
Qiu continued, however, pulling out some charts on her laptop. “The film’s performing very well. A lot of people seem to be interested in the showing for the festival alone, the money from that alone is almost enough for us to start producing the part two. Almost. All because of the tension between your characters!”
“Lovely. I’d be certain that this would be already doing well because of me.” Furina said, voice light, tapping her nail against the cup. She raises her sunglasses up, pushing her hair a little back. “Could you get straight to the point?”
“Well–I was thinking, rather, the rest of the team was thinking. Just for a few weeks, yeah? A little publicity stunt. You two doing… couple things, out in public. A few posts here and there, maybe an interview or two…?”
Her voice was uneasy towards the end of her suggestion. Did she even think this through?
“You’re saying you want us to pretend we’re dating.” You said.
“For the audience, yes,” She replies. “You don’t have to hold hands or anything you’re uncomfortable with, obviously. Just–you know.”
“No, I don’t know.”
“Furina–Okay. Just, keep the illusion alive. Just enough for the hype to stay alive until we do release an announcement for a continuation.”
There was a pause.
Furina now puts her sunglasses down slowly, her expression completely unreadable. “You’re joking.”
“No,”
“This is–insulting, actually.” She crosses her arms, eyes sharp. “Do you really think I’d lower myself to playing pretend off-screen for likes? I’m an actress, not an influencer!”
The director held up her hands, scrambling for some excuse to convince your co-worker. “Look, I wouldn’t suggest this if you didn’t have some benefit. We’re in for a bigger sequel, the attention for this film needs to stay alive until the festival ends–this is my pride and joy.” She pauses, trying to find the words. “There’s extra pay in it. A lot.”
You fell silent.
You’re not exactly proud of it–the way your mind just did the math on its own. Rent, the overdue electric bill sitting in your mailbox collecting dust. Acting jobs didn’t always give you the money you needed–you’ve been doing fine on your own, mostly, but there’s that hole in your wallet that would put all your hard earned money towards your actual needs, leaving nothing for yourself.
You didn’t say anything, but Furina noticed. Her eyes lingered on you just a little too long–and this gave your director some hope.
With a long drawn out sigh, she faces back to Qiu. “I refuse to kiss them.”
“...No one said anything about kissing.” She mumbled.
“Lifetime supply of cake–treats, whatever,” Furina added. “At least from three different shops.”
You stared at her, unsure of what to say. She raises a brow, “What? I’m making a noble sacrifice. I deserve proper compensation.”
“You don’t have to do this if you’re uncomfortable–”
“We are doing this. Too late to back out now, isn’t it?”
You couldn’t help it–you laughed. A little breathless, a little horrified. The deal was made just like that, and she just asked for sweets. (As if she hadn’t gotten enough from the dessert shop the other day already.) Furina put her sunglasses on again, looking too pleased with herself. She stood up from her chair, bringing her teaset with her, “This is going to be awful.”

ㅤruler of my heartㅤ a furina x reader fake dating au
Tumblr media
you star as the main character in a ROMANCE summer film entitled “MY ONLY WISH.” FURINA was casted the second lead–the love interest of the main character. naturally, the two of you developed a close bond, choosing to show each other your passion for acting. as the movie was announced to be shown at the FONTAINE FILM FESTIVAL, the team behind it wanted to get extra support. so, your director gives you a compromise: you can get extra-needed-cash, but you need to pretend that you and your co-actor are dating. will you take up the offer?

Tumblr media
THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS. how many days are left until the film festival? you have exactly a month to gain as much attention you and your ‘partner’ can. this short series will get updated every wednesday (as much as i am able to post!)
CONTENT WARNING. this film dabbles on angst, fluff, arguments, paparazzi, stalking, death/general threats, backlash (towards reader and furina,) rumors/gossip, "cheating" rumors, fake dating, and hurt/comfort or hurt/no comfort. these topics will get updated as each chapter goes on. if you are not comfortable with anything, you are free to walk out of the theatre.
KEEP YOUR PHONE AT SILENT MODE DURING THE FILM VIEWING. this movie has been written and filmed with fem!reader in mind as pictures that will be used represent an afab reader, although we (the team) will try to make it readable for all. reader will be represented with female traits on social media posts, though you are free to disregard that and read it as gn!reader.

the alpha ratio
pairing: ratio x gn!reader
warnings: none. this needs no warning.
tags: omegaverse. alpha!ratio. omega!reader. angst. lowercase intended.
notes: @rainswept HERE'S YOUR RATIO DRABBLE CROW
Tumblr media
i woke up. that was the worst part of my day. i wish i could die in my sleep because i don't have a super cool and intimidating alpha to wake up next to but life hates me and is Unfair with a capital U.
i pulled on my clothes over my petite omega frame (AN: reader is like 3'1, don't forget.) and looked in the mirror. my magical rainbow galaxy orbs stared back at me. they were special, specialer than any other omega but i got bullied for them so i wore brown contacts. i put the contacts in and stared at my beautiful, shit-coloured eyes. i cried.
when i left my house, i slammed into a wall. not an actual wall, but a metaphorical wall. a big, broad chest. all i could see in my vision was big, large moobies blocking my view. it was cray-zee.
"w-w-w-w-w-who are you?" i stuttered out cutely like the cute shy stupid little omega i was. the man steppped back and i got a good look at him.
he was tall. very tall. stupidly tall. people shouldn't be that tall. it's dumb. they should die maybe. he also had grape-juice hair and shiny gold eyes (AN: i don't remember what colour eyes ratio has and i'm too lazy to look it up.) that were glaring at me.
"i am dr ratio." he growled in a deep, deep voice. i could tell he was an alpha. my stomach did a little flippity flip at the sound, like the kind of things booktok girls say happens to them when they read about tall handsome men. he was definitely tall. i suppose he was handsome. handsome in an ugly way. he was UGLY. but also pretty. and pretty UGLY too.
"a-a-a-a-are you an alpha?" i blurted out, unable to stop myself. i had to know. he could be my... my... my... MATE.
"get out of my way stupid." he growled again and pushed me so hard i tripped and fell and smacked my head against the wall with a cartoonishly loud SMACK. he sauntered off, disappearing into the sunset.
my heart fluttered. i couldn't wait to see him again. (AN: PART TWO MAYBE??????????????????????????????)

Guess who? Haha, don’t worry, who I am isn’t important. Not as important as yours, of course, which would be… ah, shoot. Did I misplace my list again? Oh, here it is! Zira, right? You’re quite lucky, the most charming gentleman requested I give you this letter.
He was very sweet too, made me promise to make sure you were well, and pass on the message that he loves you, he misses you, and he is looking forward to your response. What was his name? Oh… Zhongli, of course!
My dear,
I’ve always had a penchant for letter-writing. I find it such a delicate, heartfelt medium, don’t you agree? There are words that are too difficult to say, that can be much easier translated through paper and pen, messages made so much more intimate through a simple swipe of ink.
That is why I deemed it fitting to choose this to be the way I reach out to you. My fondness towards you runs deep, yet I regretfully have not had much communication with you as of late. It is not in your fault, I am just as much guilty for not seeking your presence, but I do feel a slight melancholy that you did not seek out mine either. Do not fret yourself with my troubles though, what matters more is knowing that my feelings towards you are not misunderstood.
What words could be said, to surmise the swell of emotions when I pen your name? Is it not enough to write I love you, and I love you, and I love you, until the entire page is filled with my affections? I am not an expert in flattery, I am afraid. I could tell you that you mean more to me than every star in the night sky combined, but my poetics stop there.
Still, where there are words, there is love seeping into the page, so I hope this letter is enough to affirm it. I await our next meeting, and I would cherish any response you give.
With you always,
Zhongli

nilou is quite the friend.
it feels like running with your pinkies entwined through the forests of sumeru, the sunny weather and the muffled hustle of the city. it feels like the world centered around the two of you, giggling as the two of you ran around the shallow lake next to the waterfall.
nilou uses her vision to create. be it flowers blooming on the ground, bubbles in illusion for something even more beautiful—shes amazing when it comes to using her vision for the arts. and so, when the night comes on a hot sunny day, she manipulates the water around the lake to wrap around you.
it circles around you, translucent lotus’ blooming under her touch, her palm aligning with yours, and she smiles. the water droplets look like colors from the aurora, her fingers would dance gracefully to show you the wonders of water, the art in shaping it.
even if the two of you were only friends, nilou had hoped this moment atleast meant something to you, that her feelings would get across your oblivious personality—that when she twirls you around, you’d see how her hand would linger for far too long, that her attention would be focused on the way you moved.
your laughter haunts her on the quiet walk home, after she had brought you to yours. your eyes, oh, she had pretended it was so full of love towards her—not as a friend, but as a lover.
she had liked you longer than she could remember, and she had hoped that one day, maybe, you could reciprocate how she feels. endless, deep, and everflowing. that, is how she loves.
its just a shame that you’ll never know. to you, nilou is like that towards everyone. shes ever so the polite goody-two-shoes the people adore. she cares for the people—and so you had thought that she treated everyone like that.
but its a stupid way of thinking. not once has nilou snuck out of the theatre with someone in hand, just to show a specific spot she had kept hidden for everytime she practiced. nilou has only shown her safe haven to a few—and its just sweet how you, out of all the people she knows, she trusted you.
