IMMORTAL Vol. 3-5: Isochronal Rhythms 20.07.2016-05.11.2021 - Tim Coghlan
564 images made over three iPhones; iPhones 5s, iPhone 7 and iPhone XS, from 20.07.2016 to 05.11.2021 + 32 pg image index supplement.
IMMORTAL Vol. 3-5: Isochronal Rhythms, is five years of rigorous daily observations made through iPhone photos. Archived in three collected volumes, each volume spans the time of the iPhone’s contract. The sequence of photos are edited down from tens of thousands of photos made daily on my iPhone. The photos are sequenced in chronological order from when they were captured, this created the isochronal rhythms (repetitious patterns) that consciously and subconsciously form and flow through the narrative of the three collected volumes. IMMORTAL is the continuous practice of archiving photos made on my iPhone, a typology of the day to day, through moments of triumph, humour, intrigue, monotony and absurdity.
IMMORTAL Vol. 3-5: Isochronal Rhythms is day to day life in Melbourne, annual trips to New York to participate in Printed Matter’s New York Art Book Fair (2016-2019) are the constant narratives through all volumes. Vol. 5 spans the longest time period out of the three volumes. In the early stages it has my first time to Tokyo, Japan (2019), also the first time to a new country in nine years. Then the lead up to the Covid -19 Pandemic. The majority of photos in Vol.5 were made during the Covid-19 pandemic, a full two years of no travel and at times confined to a 5km radius of home. In this challenging time of restricted movement and the threat of the unknown from the pandemic, some of the most interesting and strongest photos where made.  KNOWLEDGE EDITIONS BOOK 040  | Published and distributed by KNOWLEDGE EDITIONS | 684 pgs (32 pg image index supplement  B&W saddle stitch) perfect bound | 160 x 211 mm | First edition, 2023 | Edition of 18
Published on the occasion of Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair 2023 at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA.
The IMMORTAL publishing practice gives importance to each photo, as iPhone photography is often viewed as a throw away photos, photos that are largely dismissed or forgotten once captured. Left to rot in the depths of your iPhone’s Photos folder, forgotten about in iCloud storage, or worse, lost forever when you do not back your iPhone up (or lose your iPhone), or discard the computer or hard-drive your back up is stored on. The book is the ultimate format to traverse the multitude of digital files of iPhone photos that creates a physical archive.

IMMORTAL Vol. 3-5: Isochronal Rhythms 20.07.2016-05.11.2021 Image Index Tim Coghlan
32 pg supplement that accompanies the book [IMMORTAL Vol. 3-5: Isochronal Rhythms 20.07.2016-05.11.2021], it documents all the metadata the iPhone collected for each photo. The metadata consists of the file name the iPhone created for each photo, the date and time it was made, the iPhone it was made with, the camera used; front camera (the one used to make video calls), back camera (the one on the back, the conventional one used), photo dimensions and file size, ISO, focal length, exposure, f. stop, shutter speed and the location it was made at. The supplement presents the metadata as the main focus and displays all the information no one (usually) cares for or sees, while also demonstrating how much data is collected for each photo.
