i think a lot of ppl miss how the vampires in sinners arent just assimalists, theyre also hungry. like, bo chows statement - "hes just.. hungry". physically and metaphorically.

they cant give, they only take. remmick says his goals are benevolent - but at the end of the day he just wants sammies songs and his past back with them. at the end, stack and mary are still like that. asking for sammies songs..

and i think that makes our last shot of annie more meaningful.

out of the main cast, she is the only one to explicitly asked to die instead of being turned. she considers it so antithetic to herself that she does not want to spend a moment as one. she wants to help. she cannot take like they did.

so. the vampires fed on the bodies of those they loved.

and annie was feeding her daughter by her body when we last see her.

lets put two and two together here. so we see sammie sing and play guitar and it summons the ancestors and descendents. right. so. if the guitar represents ancestors. okay. and sammie kills remmick with the guitar. stay with me now. sammie kills remmick (a symbol of assimilation to whiteness) with his guitar (his connection to his ancestors). do you see. what im saying.

heres another one. annie is the one who spotted and identified the danger (vampires which are colonialism, assimilation, etc), the one who mobilized everyone and knew what to do, because of her understanding of her ancestral spirituality.

this is not about fucking. god versus the devil. this is not about them. this is about colonization vs knowing your goddamn roots. and this is about your history, where you come from, who you are, being what saves you. this is about joy and art and community being what saves you and being what makes life worth living. this is about colonization being something that is forcefully and violently spread. if you want to survive it, you need to know who the fuck you are and where you come from.

Spoilers for Sinners

It is so important to me that Smoke gets to be the most violent character in the movie and the most fiercely loyal to the people he cares about

This is a man whose final act on this earth is to takeout members of the Klan who came to kill him AND as he is doing this he gets a view of the other side, because he's in the process of crossing to it, where his wife and child await, and these coexist

When he spots Annie and his child, he focuses on them, the living world drops away, it is only Hogwood speaking that distracts him, and he then kills Hogwood, to focus better on his family, in any other movie, killing Hogwood would take away his chance at an afterlife but not in this movie, and I love it for that

It never asks us to cast judgement on Smoke for his actions, instead presenting him as a whole person, and letting us take him as he is and it's just great

Smoke has always been violent, but it's also always a form of protection, every single instance of violence is in response to a threat, killing the snake, shooting the would be thieves, to even killing his own father who had beaten Stack so badly that he passed out, to slashing the would be thief in the juke and then having him beaten, the vampires come for them first with Smoke shooting at Mary because his brother's throat has been torn out, even his last act of violence is a direct response to the Klan coming to kill him, he's violent, yes, but it's always in response to something else, and this violence doesn't take away from his capacity to love, it's just part of him, he's a guarded character and his world that extends to him being violent because so often the world comes at him with threats

Smoke is allowed to be violent and yet at the same time his violent temperance is softened, he pays off Grace and Bo to have the two thieves patched up, he struggles to kill Annie and even as his brother can't kill him neither can he kill Stack

He is complicated and the movie never asks us to judge him for this, violence is just a fact of life even before the vampires get involved so of course it must be a fact of life for the characters

Oh nothing just crying while thinking abt smoke saying, "the best thing about me was him." and then later stack saying "there is no me without you."

Something small I really appreciated was how when Smoke died he didn't see his father on the other side. He saw the family he made and choose to return to. There was no message of forgiveness, or even that he had to pay for killing his father. Just peace and acceptance. Something about true afterlife being full of the people you chose and lost, but want back.

I know in an alternate universe Smoke sitting outside the Shack in a rocking chair he crafted for himself and his smoke pipe watching his baby girl run around barefoot and squealing while Annie pregnant in the Shack at her altar. Smoke pick his baby girl up and goes inside to check on Annie. He get behind her and kiss along her neck before palming her belly.
