This. I REALLY like this.
shadow and the stasis problem
Written as a collection of thoughts based on recent posts.
What is the stasis problem?
How often do we see Shadow knocked unconscious? How often does he get set aside until the next plot point requires his presence?
In short? Pretty damn often.
For reference, I’ll be stretching the definition of “stasis” somewhat to encompass any plot point that writes Shadow out of the story whether it involves cryogenic stasis or not. I’m doing it this way because such tendencies stem from the same fundamental problems.
From Heroes onward, media has displayed a frequent pattern of placing Shadow in situations where rendering him unconscious or otherwise absent becomes necessary to advance the plot.
- In his Sonic Adventure 2 backstory, Shadow is placed in stasis by the military and has been sealed away in Prison Island for fifty years until Eggman releases him.
- In Sonic Heroes, Shadow begins his story by awakening in a pod located in one of Eggman’s bases.
Omega’s backstory and motivations are catalyzed by being forced to guard said pod and attempting to kill Shadow on sight once he is freed. Team Dark’s story bookends this with entire rows of Shadow androids suspended in similar pods, thus raising questions about his legitimacy.
- In Sonic X, Shadow falls unconscious and is placed in stasis several times.
He ends the series slumbering within a pod under Eggman’s custody.
- In Sonic Battle, a Chaos Gamma robot KOs Shadow in order for the plot to move him from Gimme Shelter to Club Rouge. While unconscious, he experiences a fragmented dream of his past, as well as his previous interactions with various characters, that compels him to seek the source of the emanations he feels: Emerl.
This example is somewhat egregious since Shadow intended to seek Emerl and prevent a recurrence of “the tragedy” at the beginning of his story anyway. This plot point only repeated what we already knew in terms of his motivations.
- In Shadow the Hedgehog, Black Doom emits a noxious gas to paralyze Sonic and co., including Shadow. This is briefly subverted when Shadow stands up, proving that he is immune to its effects.
- In the Archie Sonic pre-reboot, Shadow gets placed in a capsule several times: once by the Bem to be studied in his Super form,
And again by Locke to entrap him long enough to explain his plans.
Following the events of issue 167, King Shadow’s Chaos Control-frozen body is moved inside a pod and left in a state of suspended animation until he is reanimated five years later.
In issue 169, he’s knocked unconscious along with Tails and placed inside a capsule in order for Anonymous to summon thousands of Chaos Emeralds.
- In Sonic ‘06, Mephiles reveals that, in the future, humanity has sealed Shadow away out of fear of his power.
- In Sonic Forces: Episode Shadow, Infinite sends Shadow to a virtual prison that he finds himself unable to escape for months. In addition to mocking Shadow for humiliating Infinite, presumably this allows his clone to run amok and prevents Eggman from experiencing too much pushback during his world conquest.
- Most recently, Shiro Maekawa speculated that Shadow’s future after the events of Sonic '06 involves him willingly entering stasis once peace is achieved for the planet, only to reawaken again when it is endangered.
Why does this happen?
Shadow is a character whose strength, speed, and power tend to exceed the demands of the plot, so naturally he presents a problem with the potential to eradicate conflict in an instant. Any story whose plot could be resolved by his flexing would cease to exist.
Spoiler alert: Shadow does not karate chop Sonic in half. Such a wasted plot point, smh
Chaos Control: not just for time travel!
How better to preserve the story’s stakes than to knock him out? Rendering him unconscious or incapacitated removes him long enough to diminish his threat, but not on the same permanent basis death would. He can oh-so-conveniently wake up when, where, and how the plot requires him to. Narratively speaking, he’s put on standby.
Case in point: Shadow was able to soundly deliver Infinite his own ass just a month before the events of Forces. Regardless of Infinite’s power upgrade, if he were not occupied with escaping virtual reality, he might have been able to come to Sonic’s aid and prevented him from being captured, thus eliminating most of the objectives based on the game’s first half.
Shadow is also used as a vehicle with which to demonstrate others’ power (Infinite, Eggman) and to power others’ plans (Locke, Anonymous, Infinite, Eggman, Black Doom).
As you might tell, this doesn’t exactly lend itself to good or clever writing.
Why does Shadow get this treatment and not Sonic? you might ask. Because the connotations differ. Placing Sonic in stasis and thus writing him out of the plot until it requires him again is not that feasible, but it also doesn’t carry the same emotional baggage as it does for Shadow. When a capsule becomes involved, the player is reminded of Shadow’s beginnings as an experiment.
Why is this a problem?
The stasis problem essentially pares Shadow down to a plot device. Through its reinforcement, it reminds the player, reader or viewer that he is an artificial creation first and foremost, not a character with thoughts and feelings of his own. The fact that he’s only docile when asleep is proof of just how frightening he can be when awake, and this serves to distance us from him, to “other” him. His role could be comparable to that of a robot. Something to control or be controlled by, or potentially scrap for parts if it grows too unruly. Usually other characters seek to control him or to harness his power.
It’s also redundant. A character who is presumably immortal to begin with would have no need to bypass the aging process by slumbering it away. He has more than enough power and skill to protect himself from any threats that may arise, and the time he spends sleeping could be better spent gaining wisdom from new experiences.
The overarching problem is that Shadow isn’t really given anything to do outside of Saving the World. Without attachments and motivations outside of his past trauma to ground him, he has no reason to stick around for, well, merely the experience of living.
Encapsulation might keep him safe under certain circumstances, but there’s no iron-clad guarantee it will. He would be rendered vulnerable to the intentions of anyone who decided to open his capsule.
How do we work around it?
There are no easy answers, but I think a good start involves a shift in thinking over his character. That is, to stop defining it by power alone, and start giving him more personality, agency, and motivation so that he has ample reason to stay within a story. Make him refuse to fall unconscious. Make him fight that capsule with all his might.
Using a little more imagination regarding Shadow’s limits would also be a good idea. He does not have to be so incredibly OP that writing him out is the only option. Maybe his Chaos powers don’t work here. Maybe he loses his inhibitor rings and leaks energy. Maybe his stamina is running low due to injury (though to be fair, this is the route Sonic Battle took).

Hey drawloverlala can you please tell me how the shoulders and neck work with them? ( can never do it right because of my rare logic of anatomy)
hi! sorry for the delay on this ask :D well, Sonic characters aren’t known to have necks XD at least the type of Sonic characters that have the basic body shape (like Sonic or Tails)
athough we can have exceptions like Vector by example, his body shape is similar to an “S” with the space that is in between the circle of the head and the body we can draw a sort of neck he needs to get his body shape
now for the Shoulders, it actually a noodle, you put the begining of it (in the body) where you want to put the shoulder.
i hope this was of use :D

:D ok! i’ve updated the Sonic character anatomy, this is basic though but i really hope is easy to understand (because i’ think i’m not good enough explaining things with words lol) and it results useful to anyone who might need it ^_^
just some other tips to improve:
try drawing comics! on comics you have to try new poses, angles and expressions.. is reaally helpful to improve your drawing skills!
look at official art for reference
listen to cool music! XD it always helps to get inspired hehe
here are some other tutorial things from before:
Rouge / Amy and Silver’s quills / Sonic and Shadow’s quills / neck and shoulders
