asshai, the city where blood is wine and humans search for eternal life— not all are granted that gift, and just when it seems within reach, it is pulled away, leaving the unlucky ones to fall down a bottomless pit where they find an extended life but one that feels too long, not long enough. the moon remained red and the sun dimmed by the magic that drained the atmosphere…the gods did not visit asshai, and yet asshai is not godless, for that is why they are born

both felt— not knowing what it was. they’d only seen each other in their dreams, not once standing in the same room unless it was made of walls imagined in their slumber. they spoke without voices, each word still heard, still understood, still meaningful and loud. to each, the air felt heavy yet empty without the other there, and so both of them looked forward to the moment they could rest their heads on their pillows, and see what they could never hold in the waking world.

i imagine alicent escaped to the woods more often than everyone thought. she needed to clear her mind, breath air that wasn’t infested with any reminder of who she’d become…of her sacrifices both the ones already made and the ones soon to follow. even when the clouds unleashed rage upon the world, she still made her way through the tunnels beneath the keep and emerged in the woods, the rain a reminder that she was as real as the tragedy that seemed to trail along behind her like a shadow, like a warning; it’s job was far from done.

The Hand that Raised Me

And when I sit alone on that broken tree branch, like a bird too afraid to fly, I push myself off and hope my wings would begin to move on their own accord. That my wings would take me home. but as fate’s hands pull me down, I realize, I know not the way home. for I did not choose to be here, nor did I choose to stay; I could plead, bleed, or pray, yet all paths were crossed off, save the one he planned to see me tread. there was no other way. the vulture brought me here, to forget the weight of his sins that have as well become mine, and he intended to have me pay for my and his many crossed lines. He watched from above, a wicked glint in his eyes, his ambitions, he knew — hailed unto me — had led to my demise.
