Idea 3 - Exhibition of Chinese Zodiac
28/04/2016
The third idea is an exhibition. For this time, the theme will be the Chinese Zodiac.  Not a big one, but we can hold it regularly like once or twice a year, with different themes, different activities. And we can also do it for charity.
I`m trying to start an exhibition which the theme is full of Chinese culture. For this time, it will be about the 12 Chinese zodiac. It does not have to be too big, it will be a place to let people communicate and participate.
In the exhibition, the whole place will be decorated by Chinese zodiac, there will be Chinese traditional food and special snacks which will be express in zodiac ways(animal form, etc). Also there will be Chinese zodiac costumes, puppets, and the book that includes all my design ideas of Design 1, and mini version of the Chinese zodiac sculptures. They will be rent and bought for a good price, and all the money that comes from the exhibition will be donated to the Children Hospital.

Idea 2 - Sculpture of Chinese Zodiac
28/04/2016
My second design idea is inspired by a charity event organized in Birmingham and Bristol last year by the local children’s hospital. Designed animal sculptures are exhibited during the event to raise money for charity, and both events have received very positive feedback.
Birmingham   http://thebighoot.co.uk
Bristol   http://shaunthesheep.com/news/shaun-city-art-trail-comes-london-and-bristol-2015
During the time of me learning in the UK, I saw that Birmingham has the owl sculpture for the charity business , and also the sculpture of Shaun the Sheep in Bristol. When it comes the end of the exhibition, all of the fund and sculptures will be donated to the children in the Bristol Children Hospital.
So my purpose is also to help more children, as I know that there will be a event in Sheffield called the Elephant Sculpture Event. Not long ago, our school propagandized this event and appeal  us to design for the elephant sculpture.

The meaning of the Chinese zodiac
13/03/2016
Tumblr media
1.Personality of people born in the year of Rat
“People going into society” with independent soul
People born in the Year of Rat are usually famous for open mindedness and bold remarks. However, their openness is limited to thought only, while in earnest practicing they are greatly limited. Typical people at Rat are rare people whose thoughts and behavior are completed isolated. For them, the “unlimited” brain is the important basis for their maintaining active inspiration and thoughts and also their source of sense of security. Therefore, they can accept any consumption in thoughts or words. If you were to simply discuss idea with people at Rat, you would found that people at Rat are limited by no morality or values. However, when it is time to practice, people would find that they are more inflexible than people at Rooster, at Ox in their heat.
2.Personality of people born in the year of OX
Children needing love
People born in the Year of Ox have been considered to be clam and pragmatic. However, what most people don’t know is that in fact people at Ox are extremely yearn for family warmth. Many people at Ox had cold growth experience and were educated that “coquetry is of no use” and “you could only lean on youselves for whatever you want”. And hence, to protect thermselves from hurt, they learn to hide their feelings very early and learn to face the world in a colder attitude. Long-term repression leads to that people at Ox forget to communite emotions gradually but leads to their stronger and stronger desire for family warmth. Therefore, people at Ox hardly like bounder and many of them will be attacted by those meek people.
3.Personality of people born in the year of Tiger
Delicate and particular spectators
People born in Year of Tiger are often labeled with “optimistic”, “frank” and even “silly” image. However, what you don’t know is that people at Tiger are very delicate and of perfectionism tendency with super-high perfectionism complex. But dislike people at Snake, people at Ox don’t pay so much attention to perfect details but pay more attention to perfect “personality”. It is considered that people at Ox are casual, but in fact they are delicate and particular spectators. They will make judgement of person according to lots of details in the process of getting on with that person. However, since their standards for “perfect personality” are to high to meet, so mostly they are disappointed and thus not as happy as they appear to be.
4.Personality of people born in the year of Rabbit
Active volcano under ice layer
Are people born in Year of Rabbit callous, jealous and small-minded? In fact they are pretty passionate and just pretend to be callous for those unfamiliar people and can be described as active volcano under ice layer. The cold apperance is not only their camouflage but also their hope to keep their features since they dislike the feeling of being mundane. For inner active volcano, it is because people at Rabbit are very devoted to emotion and have super-high idealistic requirements for emotions. Many people at Rabbit spend their lifetime in finding a person who can be empathic with them without even eye contacts. They will pursue the person at all costs.
5.Personality of people born in the year of Dragon
Passive resistance, difficult to compromise
It is considered that people born in Year of Dragon are the most amiable and good-tempered and it seems that they are born with a “bullied” face. But what you don’t know is that people at Dragon are actually very mighty. Since they pursue elegant and sane attitude, you rarely see that they lose the temper. But in fact people at Dragon are very mighty within the range belonging to them. People at Dragon are born with a social engagement mask and the reason they grant whatever is requested by people unfamiliar with is just that they think it unnecessary to confront you head on. While they will hardly comprise for people close to them. People at Dragon are master of passive resistance; although they will not refuse what they don’t want to do directly, they will put it off forever with various reasons.
6.Personality of people born in the year of Snake
Gentle feelings and chivalrous disposition hidden by poisonous words
People born in Year of Snake are considered to be “particular” and “sharp-tongued”. Many people think that people at Snake are difficult to get along with, but actually they are warmhearted and willing to help others. People at Snake are earnest in fact and if you think that you really need help, they will take a lot of time and efforts to help someone they are scarcely familiar with. And in fact, most often people at Snake are not to be particular and for various requests for you (even if they have already said for many times), many a time, they don’t require you to carry out truely. Since people at Snake consider it a kind of way of caring about other that “help others with improvement”, they wil scarcely help you to find what can be improved.
7.Personality of people born in the year of Horse
Usually careless, but quite sharp at times and velvet glove
When it comes to people born in Year of Horse, words of “straightforward” and “optimistic” will come to our minds. Although people at Horse seem to be straightforward and optimistic, they are actually very delicate. And people at Horse will always choose the most expensive ones that they can afford for either a treat or a gift. For this reason many people think that they are vey improtant for people at Horse or think that people at Horse are gullible in terms of money. In fact, people at Horse just enjoy the feeling that others become happy due to them. They pay little attention to money naturally and think that it’s engough to make money after they use it up. People at Horse are willing to identify who are sincere to them by this way. And for people at Horse, the most important people are those who are willing to spend time on them.
8.Personality of people born in the year of Goat
Non-objective tenderness and thoughtfulness
People born at Year of Sheep are ofen labeled with “gentle” and “thoughtful”, but as a matter of fact they are very objective and even others usually feel that they are selfish. People at Sheep pay special attention to “follow the emotion” to the hilt and they have been looking at and are used to look at the world with their own experience. In the world of people at Sheep, “objective” can hardly be seen. They will ofen have consideration for others in their own standpoints while neglect true feelings of others. It doesn’t mean that they are not thoughtful but it is difficult for them to learn to look at matters from the perspective of other people.
9.Personality of people born in the year of Monkey
Masking sensitivity and self-abasement with dashing along
People born in Year of Monkey are usually labelled with “active”, “fickle in love” and “people person” and the like. But actually people at Monkey are very sensitive and easy to be self-abased. Most of the time, we feel that people at Monkey talk a lot and seem to talk without stop; they have sweet mouth and seem to be good at talking all the time. Actually people at Monkey are afiard of being hated by others and of failing to get integrated into the collective. They are sensitive and in order not to be hated by others, people at Monkey are master of taking people’s cue from their words and facial expressions. They can talk to you and adjust content of chart according to your reactions at the time to make you feel that they have sweet mouth. Besides, people at Monkey are very shin and the reason why they talk witout a break is simply to mask their uneasiness.
10.Personality of people born in the year of Rooster
Frugalness is for better luxury
People born in Year of Rooster are evaluated as “hardworking and thrifty”, “practical” and even “mean” but they actually pay great attention on enjoyment and they are money-splashing. For people at Rooster, it is the first priority in their life to lead a comfortable life. Making money, saving money or depositing money, all of these service for a comfortable life. But people at Rooster will not spend money for joy and “make do with” is the most disgustful word for people at Rooster who want to get the superior enjoyment in their ability. In order for this, people at Rooster would sleep on the floor for three months to save money for the most expensive mattress rather than give in buying a tent bed casually for one year in order to save money.
11.Personality of people born in the year of Dog
Lack of patience due to excessive concentration
People born in Year of Dog are often connected with words of “impetuous”, “irritable” and “lack of patience”. However, people at Dog has a more important feature, that is “concentration”. Although it doesn’t mean that they will not paly cellphone whiling having a meal, they will highly concentrate on the goal when they lock a target in their hearts. While for any and all other things except for target, even having a meal and sleeping, they will be mean for time and efforts. Hence, it will apperar that they are quite impatient. So when you see a perosn at Dog is languid, then it is certainly because that he finds no goal yet or loses his goal.
12.Personality of people born in the year of Pig
Jewish businessman with claws drawn in
People born in Year of Pig are considered to be romantic, dimmed and impractical, but they have different side of being rational, astute and even haggle over every ounce. Many people at Pig love to be in a daze and distracted, whose minds are full with various unrestrained fantasy at all times and places, but it doesn’t mean that they are idiot children in real world. In fact, people at Pig are very astute and born with sixth sense to pursue good fortune and avoid disaster, which enables them to distinguish who will do good to them and who will do harm to them without rational analysis. If you think that people at Pig are fool, it just because that they are willing to be cheated by you; if not, they can be as astute as jewish businessmen.

Idea 1 -  Book about the Chinese Zodiac
22/04/2016
The Book is where I can thoroughly present my research of Chinese zodiac to the audience. It includes the history story of Chinese zodiac, the meaning, and explanation. Also, this book will compare western zodiac to Chinese zodiac, and list out the similarity and difference. The given examples of famous people will help people to get a better impression. Then the analysis of merit and demerit quality also shows why Chinese zodiac is important, and make it relate to people`s life.
I wanna use traditional Chinese bookbinding ways to staple the book, Accordion Binding and Scale-like Binding. It is another way to share Chinese culture with people. The book uses Chinese traditional ways to spread tradition culture, meanwhile the content of the book keeps pace with time.
Accordion Binding
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scale-like Binding
Tumblr media
At first, I have 5 size of the book in mind: (cm)
1. 21.1*9.4 2. 20*9.5 3. 20*12 4. 23*15 5. 30*20
Tumblr media
Because I want to make the book portable, and tradition Chinese books are oblong, so finely I decide to make the book 20x9.5(cm).
I have some ideas of the cover of the book:
I will use Chinese calligraphy and British calligraphy to express my idea. Because it can express the different traits in these two countries, and it will be my paintings of the 12 Chinese zodiacs on the right side of the cover.
Tumblr media
In the following designs, I used a lot of circles. Because in Chinese culture, circle is considered as an expression of traditional mode of thinking. The 12 zodiacs are one samsara, eventually it can be express as a smasara. There are lots of traditional images used circle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When you open the book, it can be like a circle.
Tumblr media
This cover takes example by the Chinese signet.

Chinese and Western Zodiac
19/04/2016
 Similarities:
1.there are 12 zodiacs in Chinese zodiacs, the same as western zodiacs
2.rich stories of how zodiacs started
3.people can know things that might come to them in the future
4.both Chinese and western zodiacs can help people know themselves and other people better
China’s folk experts say China’s animal sign is also suitable for westerners, now the constellation professionals also say the same for the children of the east, of course, including Chinese. What’s more, constellation + animal sign + blood type of so-called “totally strategy”.
 Differences:
1.while all the Chinese zodiacs are animals, western zodiacs have different things.
2.in China, one zodiac stands for a year, while western zodiacs divided a year into 12 parts.
3.western zodiac is a part of astrology, while Chinese zodiac is a branch of Chinese traditional culture
Constellation especially we’re talking about is usually part of the European and American countries of astrology!Animal sign culture as the representative of China, in fact mutually culture is a native of Chinese culture!Closely related to Chinese ancient history and culture.
In order to make Chinese zodiac interesting, I’m going to find out some western celebrities as examples, to explain different meanings of the Chinese zodiac.
Tumblr media
  What is the Western Zodiac?
“The Zodiac, the 12 signs listed in a horoscope, is closely tied to how the Earth moves through the heavens. The signs are derived from the constellations that mark out the path on which the sun appears to travel over the course of a year. In principle, dates in a horoscope should correspond to when the sun passes through each constellation. But they don’t, much of the time. And a closer examination of the motion of the Earth, the sun, and the stars shows the Zodiac to be more complex than you might imagine!”

Zodiac Culture in China.
16/04/2016
With the development of history, it slowly melts into folk religion.  Mainly in the marriage, life, and fortune of the year, every single zodiac has rich legends, and formed as some kind of expounding system, and become a folk philosophy symbol.
12 zodiacs, 12 animals that match the year of people`s birth, including rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, pig.
The origin of 12 zodiacs is related to zoolatry. The whole system of zodiac was first appeared in Qin dynasty. 12 zodiacs were recorded in a handed-down literature written by Chong Wang`s <Lun Heng>.
12 zodiacs are the visualize symbols of 12 Di Zhi (Twelve Earthly Branche), means: Zi(rat), Chou(Ox), Yin(tiger), Mao(rabbit), Chen(Dragon), Si(Snake), Wu(Horse), Wei(Goat), Shen(Monkey), You(Rooster), Xu(Dog), Hai(Pig). With the development of history, 12 DI ZHI (Twelve Earthly Branched) blend into Chinese people civil belief, it performance in marriage, life, luck of a year. Every zodiac has rich legend, become a folk philosophy. Now, most people put zodiacs as a mascot for Spring festival, and become an activity of entertainment culture.
Zodiacs as an ancient folk culture symbol have left a great sum of images and symbolic poems, spring festival scrolls, paintings, and folk arts and crafts. Not just in china, many countries publish stamps of zodiacs to celebrate Chinese new year.
  The star’s theory.
The ancient’s ecliptic and equator stars can be divided into “28 stars”. 28 Stars also represent different kinds of animal. Ancient starting Sunday divisions with 12 branch, said the twelve dominated belongs to the Chinese zodiac, zodiac exist corresponding relationship with 28 stars. The Ming dynasty scholar Wang Ao thinks,  28 species attachment stars and “in seven of the telecom system,” into “ladies’ bats, rat, dangerous month yan, son” pattern. Li Changqing in the Qing dynasty in the pine xia guan wordiness that twenty BaSu with animal “the first twelve plus one times is also”, “golden dragon of neck, Chen officer also, Angle of wood dumpling. Dumpling, dragon classes”, reflect the basis of the Chinese zodiac animal raise 28 kinds of stars. Stars have lines, but the said matters with animal recorded later in the Chinese zodiac.
 Folk tale 1
HUANG TI wants to select 12 animals to be the guard of courts, the cat ask rat to apply for it, but the rat forget to do so, after this, cats hate rat, and want to revenge rat. At first, HUANG TI wants to name the OX to be the leader of 12 animal guards, but the rat crawl to the back of the OX, and steal the chance. Tiger and dragon can not be convinced by this, and were made god of mountains and god of oceans, and ranged after the OX. Meanwhile, the rabbit is not convinced too, so rabbit had a running race with the dragon, eventually, the rabbit wins the game, so ranged before dragon. When this is happening, the dog feels unfair, and angry, dog bits the rabbit, and range at last as a punishment. There is also a competition between snake, horse, goat, monkey, and rooster. At last the pig was lazy, and ranged at last after dog.
This legend tells us why cat is not in the list of 12 zodiacs. Actually, there was no cat in ancient china. When cat came to china, 12 zodiacs had formed for a long time. This legend is just a child`s story, not a reasonable explanation.
 Folk tale 2
Based on the living characteristic, ancient china ranges 12 animals as 12 zodiacs, each animal represents 2 hours.
Rat: 11pm to 1am (also called ZI SHI). Rat are fearless, they act frequently.
OX:  1 am to 3am (also called CHOU SHI). At this moment, OX have eaten enough grass, the rumination is the slowest, the most comfortable.
Tiger: 3 am to 5 am (also called YIN SHI). According to ancient books, tiger is fierce and active at this moment.
Rabbit: 5 am to 7 am (also called YIN SHI). Rabbit is the symbol of the moon. At the moment, the sun has rise yet, so the rabbit represents this time.
Dragon: 7 am to 9 am (also called CHEN SHI). According to legends, this time is when dragon brings rain (dragon in China is the god of Oceans, bringing rain is dragon`s duty).
Snake: 9 am to 11 am (also called SI SHI). At this time, snake won`t hurt people and won`t be on the road, snake hide in the grass.
Horse: 11 am to 1 pm (also called WU SHI). According to monk, this time the sun is the most shinning hour. YANG shift to YIN, most animal lie down and rest, only horse is still standing.
Goat: 1 pm to 3 pm (also called WEI SHI). This time goat pees the most, and the urine can cure astonishment disease.
Monkey: 3 pm to 5 pm (also called SHEN SHI). At this time, monkey like to roar, and the voice is the longest and loudest.
Rooster: 5 pm to 7 pm (also called YOU SHI). At this time, the sun goes down, rooster goes back to nest and rest.
Dog: 7pm to 9 pm (also called XU SHI). Night falls, the dog will generate a special vision and hearing. Dog can see further.
Pig:  9 pm to 11 pm (also called HAI SHI). At this time, pig sleeps the best, and the snoring is the loudest. They grow the fastest.
 Chinese Mythologies
The jade emperor wants to select 12 animals to be representation, then he sends other gods to announce the affair to the animals, animals should go to the court at MAO hour, MAO day, MAO mouth, MAO year, the range will be settled by the time animals come to the court.
Back to then, cat and rat are still good friends. Cat likes to sleep, yet he wants to be selected as well, so cat ask rat to tell him when rat goes to court. But rat forget this. Rat went to OX, said that OX gets up early, and can run fast, they should be company to the court. OX said yes.
At that time, dragon doesn`t have corner, but rooster does. Dragon talk to the rooster that rooster is pretty enough so that he won`t need a corner at all, and dragon ask rooster to borrow corners to dragon. Rooster is so happy because of the dragon`s blandishments. Rooster said yes immediately.
When the day of selection comes, animals come to the court successively, while the cat still asleep. When they arrive, rat jump forward, the jade emperor see that rat comes the first, then the OX, after them are, tiger, rabbit. Dragon was late, but he is so big, that the jade emperor saw him in a long distance, and with the corner he borrows from rooster, dragon was so beautiful. Then snake comes after dragon. Monkey was late too, but he can jump, he jumped and jumped, he come to the court in the 9th place. Then rooster, dog, and pig were selected.
Cat wake up after the campaign, so he hated the rat, and chased rat all day long. Dragon thinks that he is much more beautiful than before without corner. So he doesn`t want to return the corners to rooster. The rooster is very angry, and he yells every morning.
 Animal year
Animal year is this year is to belong to your Chinese zodiac. I was born in the year of the monkey, so this year is my year,is my animal year.
Benmingnian is considered not auspicious year, so it is also “snag”. All have a tradition of benmingnian hang red ward off evil spirits.
In the animal year, the Chinese people used to wear red, with red and lots of things about red. People like to have red underwear underwear, red belts, best to wear red decorations, such as red silk rope, red collar, etc., the so-called “red”. Because they think the red color can drive away bad luck!

Why I think Chinese Zodiac is important? Why is it interesting?
15/04/2016
In China, Chinese Zodiac is as a kind of beliefs and traditions, also is a regional culture and Chinese Legends and Myths. “Our ancestors were actually a very pragmatic group of people”
Different Zodiac represent have different explanations and meaning. Through the understanding of the Chinese Zodiac, western people can learn and find out examples and meaning from Chinese Zodiac, also from the Chinese Culture. Not only they can find the Chinese Zodiac explain for each animal, but also they can comparison and analysis the Chinese Zodiac and Western Zodiac.
“The Chinese animal zodiac, or sheng Xiao (/shnng-sshyaoww/ ‘born resembling’), is a repeating cycle of 12 years, with each year being represented by an animal and its reputed attributes. Traditionally these zodiac animals were used to date the years.”
P.S. There is some design about the rings of the animals, and I think they could be helpful. Here are the links:

My Audience
15/04/2016
I know there are people interest in my topic - Chinese Zodiac, such as people who believe in ‘Super Nature’, ‘Destiny’, and ‘God’; people want to have business with Chinese; and young people who want to explore the wider world. Then, C12Z will be an great topic for them. But personally, I want to focus on the following tow groups:
The First group is children age from 10-15 years old:
Children during this age, they start to have their own ideology, It’s the phase that their mind start to change from naive to become rational, they start to have their own real life purpose.
Hence, every zodiac possesses their great and specific quality, by learning the Chinese zodiac, it may be a good example for them and lead them to know who they really are, and what they want to be in the future.

Why I choose this topic for my project 2
14/04/2016
My project 1 is about culture transfer, and, in my opinion, culture transfer is about one culture transfers from its origin to a new environment, and how it has been accepted by the people living there. The content of culture is too wide, so I think what I can do now is that I should choose one specific subject or topic, and develop it as an example/introduction to let people get the first impression about my project.
As a Chinese, I’m familiar with Chinese culture most. There are too many things I want to talk about, “The Hundred School of Thought, Poetry and Painting, Chinese Traditional Literary, Architecture and Festival, Chinese Drama, Chinese language and characters, Chinese Medicine Practitioner, Regional Culture, Headdress Garments and Accessories, Chinese God Demon Ghost, Chinese legends and myths, and Chinese couplets, and so on…” However, most people know China has colorful cultures, which unfortunately is all they know.
The problem is when people know something but not truly know something, there is possibility to get confuse and misunderstanding, such as ‘Chinese eat everything, dog, cat, insects etc.’ And the worst case it could lead to hate.
Therefore, I want to eliminate this possibility, and this is one of the purposes for my project. Also I want to inspire people, so that culture can get a better development when more people understand and participate. In addition, there are people want to know other cultures but cannot find good materials, especially for young people.
This year is the ‘Monkey year’ and it is my ‘Zodiac birth year’ (I will explain what the Monkey year and Zodiac birth year are in my following blogs), so I believe it is an important year to me. I had celebrated the Chinese New Year in the UK, but I don’t know why it feels strange. Not because of the reason that I’m away from home, I’d seen enough Chinese New Year elements during the time, it just feels like something is missing. However, I still can find that the British people like Chinese New Year and Chinese culture. This make me think, and here comes my topic – ‘Chinese Zodiac’.
I believe this is an interesting and meaningful topic. In my next blog, I will talk about the audience and the purpose for this topic.
P.S. There are two articles about culture transfer, and I think they could be helpful. Here are the links:
“Cultural transfer does not represent a single, static trend or a set of criteria.”
http://www.americanforeignrelations.com/A-D/Cultural-Imperialism-Three-trends-of-cultural-transfer.html#ixzz45iZ1qJHg
“The editors of this special issue of Word and Text conceptualize ‘Cultural Transfer’ as the global mobility of words, concepts, images, persons, animals, commodities, money, weapons, and other things (understood in a broad sense).”

12 zodiacs  and 12 earthly branches.
14/03/2016
In the ancient china, 12 zodiacs are used as a calender. It matches with the 12 earthly branches.  This kind of calender started since Han dynasty. The ancients divided one day into 12 hours  with the twelve earthly branches for code, it is easier for ancient Chinese to remember the time. Ancient china use 12 earthly branches as a timing method, called “ 12 age”, which is what we called “24 hours”. Later Chinese zodiacs was involved into the timing method, with 11 kinds of animals from nature life, and dragon from legends. Ancient Chinese match each zodiac to one of 12 earthly branches based on the daily routine of farming period, in order to make it easier for people to remember.
