I've heard/seen a couple time, people say that they were more attached to the Going Merry than the Thousand Sunny, and I wanted to explore the why a bit. (I obviously don't have an answer, these are just ramblings, so if anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to know)
Anyway, I have a few possibilities, that all kind of tie together.
First, Merry was the first ship. There's something special about firsts, although I don't know why! And as the first ship, the could totally be why Merry is held dearest in so many's hearts. At the same time, there are many biases (?) that could lead people to like the Sunny more as well, ie. she's the current/more recent boat, we've been with her the longest. Additionally, some people prefer the beginning of the series to the later portion, and Merry may represent this to some extent. The first boat, the first adventures, the first of everything.
Second, there was a lot of conflict tied up in the Merry, an entire plot leading to her goodbye. (And that goodbye could very much just be the reason in the first place) In comparison, there hasn't been much worry over the Sunny. During the time skip a bit maybe, sure, but overall, this is the ship that will sail to Laughtale, the tension has been lost, when we know this ship will make it to the end regardless.
Now, finally, for some fun little theorizing: nostaligia. People are obsessed with it. So obviously, there's nostalgia for the past (again the first boat and the beginning of the series), but I want to go beyond that, so let's look at the designs of the two boats.
The Merry is smaller and much more simple. I think part of the pull of the Merry may be what I can only call "rustic charm". Despite the general outlandish design choices that define One Piece in general, Merry is a boat that you could conceivably build to work the exact same in the present day. The Sunny on the other hand is much more removed from a real life boat - she can flew through the sky for goodness sake. It's cool, but I would think it's hard to feel nostalgia for futurism, being something that is yet to occur. The Merry may be nostalgic in a sense because she can call back to the real world. She can anchor to an achievable possibility.
This isn't to put anything futuristic down, simply to say that nostalgia is a powerful tool, and that which is rustic and simplistic often seems to tap into it.
roronoa zoro is the best character in one piece because hes like "well if i was in an unwinnable situation i would simply win rather than lose" and it works every time
Sorry, sorry, I know this has been talked about before, I'm sure,,, but Zoro who is one of the characters with thematic ties to god, being crucified upon his introduction, being the one to reject the idea of god, being the one who embodies demons and hell...
And Luffy, the sun god, representing freedom and joy and hope,,,
Oh, I can't, the parallels are just so perfect
It's just that Luffy is the antithesis of the dogma of the church, he doesn't care what anyone says, he does what he wants when he wants, he is not so much loyal as protective - and yet he is god. And Zoro who commits himself to one path and idea, is loyal to end when he decides to be, even ties himself to the idea of hell - says he doesn't believe.
(It's not that Luffy lacks dedication and Zoro lacks individuality, that is untrue, but just that whimsy and loyalty are their most evident traits)
Zoro claiming the title of King of Hell, of Demon, despite not being one. And Luffy being Nika, the Sun God, despite not knowing it.
I love LuZo where Zoro is so endlessly devoted to Luffy and he acknowledges this fully himself (I mean that's basically canon) but what gets even better is when fanfic writers/fanartists/etc. will have this careful balance to it, where Zoro knows it's gone possibly a bit too far (again also pretty canon) and he doesn't want Luffy to find out about it
Those works where Zoro doesn't want Luffy to find out about Thriller Bark because he knows he wouldn't be happy about it... oh those drive me so insane
(And with Nika Luffy, now... oh, I don't know how to express the multiple directions this could be taken in and just to what extent every single one of those would ruin me)
If zoro went thru his plan in little garden to cut his feet off... I think he’d be able to psych Mihawk out in their next duel and win on a technically with his awful bone stumps
"Nami & Usopp are too weak! They cant hold their own & they don't deserve to be in the strawhats! What is the point of Robin if Luffy can unlock the voice of all things?? Sanji is a liability because he won't hit women!! Franky & Brook & Jinbei are unnecessary additions and aren't relevant! Oda shouldn't add anyone else to the crew because there's already too many blah blah blah"
Shut up. You fool. Absolute baboon.
Don't you know a King is nothing without his royal court.
Y'all, I'm 20, I had classes about how to type and use the computer and the internet and everything. I'm taking a minor in computer science. How am I still so inept when it comes to figuring out social media sites??? TT
