Decoding the mysterious white gold
The very elusive metal, white gold is slowly gaining popularity in the jewellery world with a lot of modern women opting for it over yellow gold. Although, it is not as popular in India as much as it is abroad.
But what exactly is white gold and why is it all so popular suddenly? We decode this mysterious metal for you here.
It is gold, but still not gold. Well, by that we simply mean that white gold is an alloy of yellow gold along with other white metals like nickel, palladium, platinum manganese, or even silver. Gold, when traditionally mined, isn’t even yellow. Since it cannot survive by itself in the form of jewellery, it is mixed with copper or zinc that gives it a bright yellow shade. An alloy of white gold is not shiny and white, but actually grey or pinkish. The plating of rhodium over it gives it its beautiful, lustrous finish. Hence both yellow and white gold are real gold, and have the same worth in the market. They are also measured the same way, in karats. If a ring is 18 karats gold, then whether it is mixed with zinc or with copper, the value of gold remains the same.
Let’s see how white gold came about.
Back when diamonds on engagement rings became famous throughout the world, the combination of platinum is what went best with diamonds. Pure silver has a greyish tinge, but the shiny white metal with a large diamond sitting on it was the most gorgeous combination ever. However, after World War II, when everything became very expensive because of less supply, platinum rings became a luxury only few could afford. That’s when the magical alloy of white gold was created, allowing young couples everywhere to live their fairytale proposals while on a budget. Today, white gold is rather popular with young women because of its strength and low maintenance. It is perfect for work with women who are not very fond of the typical yellow gold, and those who want to invest in jewellery but don’t have the time to take care of it and get their gold jewellery constantly re-polished and fixed at the jewellers.
White gold is not very commonly found, and only some jewellers have it. Why though? Considering that it is an alloy of easily procured metals, it should be easily found, isn’t it? Well, the reason for that is that white gold is less commonly found than we’d expect. This is because the alloy is a difficult one to perfect. If the alloy gets out of proportion, it could cause skin allergies. The icing on the cake, which is the Rhodium plating on white gold, is a rather expensive metal.
White gold is making its foray into the Indian world with the young modern woman, whether she buys gold earrings, rings or pendants. This beautiful, elusive metal is here now, and it’s here to stay. So shop to your heart’s content at Krishna Jewellers, Pearls and Gems for your first ornament in white gold and revel in the marvel of this beautiful metal.
