Adaptation

In my adaptation of The Gift of the Magi, I have learned that you must remain loyal to the original work in one degree or another. You can change the setting, the time, the characters, but the original premise must be the same in order to have the greatest effect. In my adaptation, First Christmas, it is set in present day, with a newly-wed couple celebrating their first Christmas as Husband and Wife. They soon realize that with their move into a new apartment and the cost of their wedding, they are going to struggle to get by, let alone get gifts for one another. Wanting to make sure that their partner gets the best gift they can get, they both make sacrifices for one another. Margaret sells her prized violin, and Sam sells his prized camera. Once they exchange gifts, a new bow for Margaret and a new lens for Sam, they realize that they sacrificed in vain, and that the only gifts that they each need are each other. Adaptation is not new, but the ideas are. As a self-published author it is my goal/dream to one day adapt my writing/novels to movies/television. This project has given me insight to the process, and I definitely plan on utilizing the knowledge for the future.

Mastery Journal Assignment.
While scriptwriting is fun, I don’t know that I see myself doing it for a living. I feel as though there are a lot of restrictions when it comes to screenwriting/screenplays. I feel that as a writer I tend to lean more towards novels when it comes to storytelling, as it gives me a lot more freedom.
I feel as though if I was to have a novel that I have written adapted into a movie, I would enjoy creating the script for it. However, as I mentioned, I feel as though I would be restricted in terms of my creativity as a writer.
There are a lot of options available in the writing world, yet I always tend to stick to novels and short stories. I think that if I was to branch out from novels, I would probably like to do comics or graphic novels. While they take a lot of freedom away from the writing, I do like the creativity that you can garner from them. I feel like as a writer you would have more control doing graphic novels or comics, as you can sort of direct the artists to draw what you want them to.
I enjoyed my time writing the scripts for this class, as it opened my eyes to other avenues that I could pursue as a writer. I know that I said that I don’t know that I would pursue scriptwriting as a career, but I definitely won’t cross it off my list of things to do. I love writing in almost every fashion, so I would be willing to give just about anything a try.
Who knows, maybe I will have to write more scripts in my coursework, and maybe I will learn to love scriptwriting as much as I love writing novels and short stories.
