Reinventing reading - Progression doesn't always have to be about moving forward (unless it's a Kindle)
It gives me so much joy, sometimes the giggles, other times tears and nostalgia. A chance to escape reality and countless vacations during the epidemic. There is no waiting list, but there is always an update or an upcoming season. For me, books are the ultimate must-have accessory of the season. Actually every season. And it should be for you too.
My first book memory is my Mom reading me Pippi Longstocking on the beach. I was maybe 4 years old. It was instant addiction. (Yes, there is a movie also. And yes, it is the one Luke, Lorelai, Rory, and Dean watch on their double date at the 'black-white-read movie theatre' in Gilmore Girls.) Later, when I was old enough to read, there were heated arguments between Dad and me. The subject was the reasonable amount of books to take on a 2-week long holiday. Reached an agreement on 1 book per day. (Thank God, Kindle solved that problem.) Even more fond memories about reading books together with girlfriends (can I turn the page already??) and buying books for boyfriends as an attempt to make them understand my passion. With varying results.
As an adult and with unlimited access to all the books in the world only time can limit my reading. I am constantly making lists about my favorite authors, setting alarms for new releases. Always hoping to find a new writer with whom I will fall in love. And fearing that the book I am reading will end and I will never find one to live up to it. (So obviously I only read the last bit when I have already found the next one.)
I still have hope for the next generation as well. My niece has membership in not one, but three libraries. She maxes out the number of books, she can have on loan per week. Smart. She is in her first year in high school, and the other day had to explain to her classmates the purpose of the library. (Yes, there is an app. It is called inventory.)
Anyway, in an era where reading is at risk, do yourself a favor. Instead of another Netflix binge or mindless scroll on Instagram, read a book this week. Any book. And if you are a fellow booklover, convert someone. (I targeted my bestie. Next week we will pass a bookstore. Babysteps.)
