What concerned me in Xiran Jay Zhao's post and their notes is that they say there's "no worthy reason to hit the printing house". Because there is one, but westerners actively avoid discussing it: russia just wants to eradicate us and our culture.
russia has been burning all Ukrainian books on the occupied territories but everyone ignored it. And this attack (that happened almost a week ago, actually) was also part of this. Faktor Druk was one of the biggest printing houses in Europe and Ukraine will probably face a shortage of books, especially textbooks. It was also done close to the beginning of Book Arsenal (Книжковий арсенал), which is the biggest literature festival in Ukraine and was attended by Zelensky last year. This year the festival is focused on war literature, especially war diaries, and a lot of them were in print at Faktor Druk during the strike.
For russia Ukrainian civilian objects are a legitimate target because they want us gone. This is genocide.
But of course organizations like the UN don't see the genocidal intent if they just think it's all "accidental strikes" because of russian "old" (in fact, modernized by western electronics because sanctions don't fucking work) weapons.
Open your fucking eyes.

It's so wild to me to see under that Xiran Jay Zhao's post about the bombed ukrainian printing house comments like "I hope everyone is safe." And I get it, people are saying this out of kindness and pure consern, there's nothing wrong with it. It just shows how little coverage our war has abroad.
No, no one in Ukraine is safe. No one in that printing house was safe, in fact, 7 people died. No one in a huge hypermarket in Kharkiv on Saturday was safe, in fact, there were 18 killed and 48 injured. And all this happened in the span of only a few days.
No one is safe in territories occupied by russians because the whole family can get killed by refusing to give up their home to russian soldiers. And every time ukrainian army liberates some region, they find mass graves and torture chambers there.
No one is safe even far away from the front line and the border with russia, because missiles and drones fly all over Ukraine, and you never know when the next one will land on your house.
Hell, ukrainians aren't safe even abroad, because there's always a chance there will be some crazy russian or russian supporter who will decide to beat or kill us. And I'm not making this up.
I'm aware that I'm more safe than the people close to the front line and the border with russia or in occupied territories. I don't hear explosions every day, unlike my friend from Kharkiv. But that doesn't mean I'm completely safe. Missiles and drones fly by at least several times a week, especially at night, when I don't hear the sound of an air raid siren simply because I'm asleep.
I am not safe.
My family is not safe.
My friends all over Ukraine are not safe.
We're not safe until russia is gone from our territories. That's why we need all that ammunition and aid. War won't magically stop if our allies stop sending us weapons; that's not how it works. We'll just be more unsafe, because russia won't stop unless it is forced to.
Here's ukrainian news sources you can follow that report daily:

Just wanted to show one recent example of what Russia has been doing to Ukraine. The city of Kharkiv, with over a million residents, is located close to Russian borders, meaning that it's difficult to defend it from air strikes. Russia has been systematically destroying it and killing its people, intensifying its attacks more and more, using the fact that most Ukrainian allies forbid us from launching our own attacks on Russian territory.
On May 25, Russian sent bombs to a hypermarket in Kharkiv. On a weekend, in the middle of the day.
That same day, it bombed the park. Before that, it hit the rest zone.

And a publishing house.

And the hotel.

And the television tower.

And so on and on. Russia specifically targets public places and areas of life to make Kharkiv a ghost city. To destroy the home of over a million people. Many, many residents are constantly dying from these attacks, including children, pregnant women, the elderly, and other most vulnerable population groups. And Ukraine is unable to hit the locations from which Russia bombs Kharkiv because it's forbidden by our own partners. It's a joke.
And it's just one city. Russian bombs and missiles are erasing towns and villages from existence entirely on a constant basis. I can't even imagine how many people and animals die as a result. It's impossible to comprehend it on a human level. Just like it's impossible to comprehend the world's indifference, where on the one hand, we have support, but on the other hand, this support is limited to not letting us lose quickly. We are under the most cruel restrictions and limitations. And as long as the greed controls the world, which is probably forever, and our partners keep having mutually beneficial relations with Russia, there is no way out of this. Just more deaths, suffering, and misery.

A lot of Ukrainians (me included) feel like we're talking into the void. We share news about war and current genocide, talk about our history and culture, about all the opression we lived through because of russia, russian colonialism, etc. Every single question you could possibly have about Ukraine is probably answered by multiple Ukrainians on social media already. But it seems like all of this is being shared only between Ukrainians and those foreigners who already know all those things, the people who need to learn about it won't see it. Something educational about Ukraine goes viral, you check reposts - Ukrainians and people who already engage with Ukraine, no regular people who know nothing about Ukraine or "war is being shoved down or throat" crowd or whataboutists.

Я розірву тебе, поріжу на частини, а потім склею до купи. Бо я дійсно, насправді, дуже тебе люблю.
І така невпізнана собою і іншими ти підеш далі. Рвати і різати себе чужими руками.
Тільки клей не забудь.
Tumblr media
I will tear you apart, cut you into pieces, and then glue you together. Because I really, really, really! love you.
And unrecognizable to yourself and others, you will move on. To tear and cut yourself with other people's hands.
Just don't forget the glue.
