October is the perfect time to visit San Diego as both residents and tourists can enjoy the annual Kids Free San Diego offers. These cover many of the best things to do in San Diego with kids, including over 100 museums, attractions, tours, hotels, and restaurants in 2019.
Based on the feedback and questions I get from readers, the offers below are among the most popular.
How to Take Advantage of Kids Free San Diego
You’ll need to read the terms and conditions of each offer. Sometimes, you’ll only need an adult ticket and a child can enter free with you. Other venues will require that kids also have a printed voucher.
There are also limits on how many kids per adult can go free in addition to age restrictions. The most important thing is that you carry an eligible ticket as some sightseeing passes don’t qualify for Kids Free San Diego promotions.
Discounted adult tickets for select attractions that are eligible for Kids Free San Diego are available at aRes Travel. This means you’ll save even more in October. Most of these discounted tickets offer the ability to print and go straight to the gate. In some cases, you may also need to print an eligible child ticket.
San Diego Zoo
A ticketed adult can take up to 10 children for free to the San Diego Zoo between October 1–31, 2019. This offer is valid for children 11 and under and a coupon is not required for free kids entry.

Kids Eat Free at Some San Diego Restaurants
A variety of restaurants and San Diego hotels are offering kids the opportunity to eat for free. Here are a few highlights.
Galaxy Taco in La Jolla Shores offers kids combos complimentary for a maximum of two kids ages 12 and under per adult. We love the tacos, which have a gourmet spin and it’s a nice place for a margarita, too.
Up to two kids ages 12 and under per paying adult also eat free at Carnitas Snack Shack Embarcadero in downtown San Diego. This is one of our favorite places to eat should you be visiting the USS Midway Museum, Maritime Museum of San Diego, or taking a San Diego Bay tour (like the Coronado Ferry, whale watching or Patriot Jet boat) departing from right here.
Kids Cruise San Diego Bay Free
San Diego Bay tours are the best things to do in San Diego for tourists but something that we residents usually don’t take advantage of enough.
Flagship Cruises & Events is offering six free children per paid adult on all 1- and 2-hour San Diego Harbor Tours during the month of October. Plus, the adult tickets are even at a slight discount.
Kids cruise free on any daily San Diego Speed Boat Adventures Harbor Cruise that is valid with the purchase of two adult tickets. One free child per boat is eligible between October 1-31, 2019.
Kids Travel for Free
Families traveling across the U.S.–Mexico border can now save time and money with the Cross Border Xpress (CBX), a unique pedestrian bridge connecting the Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) with San Diego. When flying into TIJ, children ages 12 and under, can get a free single trip CBX ticket from Tijuana to San Diego with purchase of an adult ticket. The offer is not available online and you must ask for the promo at CBX counters at TIJ and also present proof of a reservation in a San Diego hotel or attraction.
Kids Free October at San Diego Museums
Up to two kids ages 12 and under can go free to the below list of museums with a paid adult.
To participate, families need to download the free coupon for every museum they wish to visit and present it at the participating museum’s admissions desk.
A Museum Mash-Up event in honor of Kids Free October will be held at New Children’s Museum Park on Sunday, Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Coupons can be downloaded online from the San Diego Museum Council.
For local families, this is a fantastic opportunity to check out a new museum.

There’s so much to do when you’re visiting Santa Barbara with kids. My parents used to live here and we go back often for weddings and weekend getaways, usually via the easy Pacific Surfliner train from San Diego to Santa Barbara.
We love strolling through the fun, family-friendly museums, relaxing on the beautiful beaches, and exploring what there is to do up and down the coast. The weather is near perfect for most of the year (Santa Barbara gets 300+ days of sunshine), so all-ages outdoor excursions abound.
What you won’t find in Santa Barbara are the big theme parks that draw so many families to San Diego. That means that visiting Santa Barbara with kids can be more relaxing. Your vacation will unfold at a slower pace. There won’t be any long lines, just long stretches of quality time.
Below you’ll find 10 of my favorite things to do in Santa Barbara with kids.
Go to the Beach

Leadbetter Beach photo by Jay Sinclair, Courtesy of Visit Santa Barbara
While Santa Barbara is sometimes called the American Riviera, it’s important to remember that this is California. Not all the beaches in Santa Barbara are great swimming beaches. Some are better for watching the sunset, tide pooling, or having a picnic.
The best beaches for kids in Santa Barbara, in my opinion, are Leadbetter Beach, East Beach, Butterfly Beach, Miramar Beach, and Carpinteria State Beach.
Leadbetter Beach is across from Santa Barbara City College. Typically gentle waves make it a popular spot for learning how to surf and people who enjoy ocean swimming. It’s a gorgeous sandy beach with convenient amenities that include a grassy lawn and outdoor barbecue facilities.
East Beach is the epitome of a Santa Barbara beach and is conveniently located near downtown. Older kids will want to play volleyball here, and there are kayak and stand up paddleboard rentals right on the beach. It can get busy, but it’s never packed.
Butterfly Beach is a local favorite with its narrow strip of pristine sand and its unique east-west orientation that makes it a hot spot for sunsets and sunrises. Again, this beach doesn’t have lifeguards, but the surf isn’t terribly intense, either.
Miramar Beach is a small curved beach with almost no waves where families can walk, tide pool, splash around, or just relax. It’s definitely a hidden gem and one that not many tourists know about. The only downsides are that this beach doesn’t have facilities or lifeguards, and the parking lot is tiny.
Carpinteria State Beach is one of the safest beaches in the country and is just about ten minutes away from downtown Santa Barbara. The water is extremely calm here because of a protective reef, making it a great place to take beginner surfing lessons when you’re visiting Santa Barbara with kids.
If hitting the beach is number one on your itinerary when you’re visiting Santa Barbara with kids, also check out Santa Claus Beach and Arroyo Burro Beach — both of which are great swimming beaches.
Santa Barbara Zoo

Photo by David Collier, Courtesy of Visit California
We enjoy visiting the Santa Barbara Zoo. It’s on the smaller side, which makes it a great half-day outing, plus it’s absolutely lovely and well-maintained. I’d say it’s worth a visit just to see the native California condors and to hand feed the resident Masai giraffes.
Older kids will enjoy climbing on the 26-foot rock wall while younger visitors will have a blast riding the zoo train, panning for fossils, and running around in the family play area.
The zoo is also home to exotic animals from diverse ecosystems, including anteaters, lions, gorillas, elephants, penguins, and snow leopards. One of the most interesting features of the zoo is the animal kitchen where visitors can watch as zoo staff prepare food for the various animals.
Chase Palm Park
There’s some debate about which park has the best playground in Santa Barbara. Chase Palm Park has a massive wooden shipwreck-themed play area plus a cute old-fashioned carousel and a koi pond that little kids will be happy to watch for a long time. There’s also a bike and rollerblading trail, a skateboard park, beautiful walking trails, and beach access.
It’s located midway between the Santa Barbara Zoo and Stearns Wharf, across the street from East Beach. If your kids like to walk, you could spend the morning at the zoo, run around the park in the afternoon, and grab dinner at the wharf, and maybe hit the beach in between.
Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History

Photo by Jessy Lynn Perkins, Courtesy of Visit Santa Barbara
This isn’t your typical natural history museum. There are a lot of hands-on activities, and the museum’s display cases are usually positioned close to the floor so even the smallest visitors will be able to see everything.
The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History also has a relaxed vibe. Taking kids to museums can sometimes feel stressful, but not here! Families are free to wander slowly through the eight halls of exhibits showcasing dinosaurs, mammals, minerals, and more.
You can easily see everything — including the 72-foot blue whale skeleton named Chad — in about two hours, but if you have more time, it’s worth seeing a show at the Gladwin Planetarium.
MOXI Museum

Photo by JasonRick, Courtesy of Visit Santa Barbara
When you’re visiting Santa Barbara with kids, definitely put this fun, interactive museum on your itinerary. MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation has tons of hands-on science and tech exhibits that are as much fun for parents as they are for kids.
There are three floors filled with 17,000 square feet of exploration space that includes building, splashing, crafting, and music and sound activities. Make sure you visit the rooftop for a fantastic view of Santa Barbara.
Rent Bikes

Photo by Wheel Fun Rentals, Courtesy of Visit Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara is such a bike-friendly community, and I love the side of the city I see when I’m exploring on two (or four) wheels. You don’t have to bring your own bike because there are lots of shops and Santa Barbara hotels that will let you rent bikes for the day or for as long as you’ll be visiting the city.
There are miles of well-maintained bike paths along the coast that are flat and easy enough for kids as young as six to ride on with confidence. You can bike from the quiet village of Montecito to downtown Santa Barbara and Stearns Wharf, and there are guided cycling tours, too.
You could easily spend a wonderful weekend sightseeing in Santa Barbara with kids without ever getting behind the wheel of a car.
Kid’s World
Younger kids will love running around at the fantastic 8,000-square-foot playground at Alameda Park — one of Santa Barbara’s oldest parks, right across from Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens.
Known as Kid’s World, this playground has plenty of slides and swings, and a huge castle structure for children to explore, plus a separate area for smaller kids.
Tree climbers will find a lot of great low hanging branches to dangle from, too. It’s a great spot to spend a few unscheduled hours when you’re visiting Santa Barbara with kids.
Stearns Wharf

Photo by Jessy Lynn Perkins, Courtesy of Visit Santa Barbara
This waterfront area at the end of State Street is Santa Barbara’s most visited attraction because there’s so much to do.
Stearns Wharf is where you’ll find the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center — an interactive marine education facility that’s enjoyable for all ages. There’s also family-friendly shopping (we like to stop and buy trinkets at the Old Wharf Trading Company) and dining (try Santa Barbara Shellfish Company).
Whenever we’re here, we grab ice cream at Great Pacific Ice Cream Shop and pop into Madame Stearns Candy Shop to see what’s new. If you want to do something a bit out of the ordinary, have a palm reading or get your tarot cards read at Madame Rosinka’s. As a kid, I always thought it was cool that you could drive out onto the wharf (parking can be tough though).
Whale Watching

Photo by David Collier, Courtesy of Visit California
The Santa Barbara Channel is one of the best places for whale watching in California because the nutrient-rich waters attract hungry marine animals, including dolphins and migrating whales.
There are a lot of Santa Barbara whale watching tours available, on boats that range from bare-bones to quite luxurious. From November through April, you’ll spot Pacific gray whales as they head south to Baja California to give birth and then north again (this time with their calves in tow) back to Alaska.
From spring through fall, you’ll see colossal blue whales and acrobatic humpback whales, along with shy minke whales and fin whales. You can also spot whales from the trails along Santa Barbara’s scenic bluffs.
Lil’ Toot Taxi

Photo by Jay Sinclair, Courtesy of Visit Santa Barbara
Visiting Santa Barbara with kids will almost always mean taking a ride or two on this Santa Barbara icon. The Lil’ Toot Water Taxi is an adorable yellow tugboat with a distinctive whistle, a smokestack that blows bubbles, and a super cute smile.
Little kids love the Lil’ Toot Water Taxi, and admission is just a few dollars ($5 for grownups, $2 for kids) for a 15-minute narrated boat ride that runs between the Santa Barbara Harbor and Stearns Wharf.
The tug departs every half hour and seats up to 19 passengers. Tours used to be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, but now it’s possible to buy tickets in advance online.
Santa Barbara Family Hotels
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay while visiting Santa Barbara with kids, my top pick among local hotels is Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore, Santa Barbara. It’s one of my favorite luxury hotels precisely because it’s so welcoming to kids and the atmosphere is very relaxed.
There’s also a lot to do, both on and near the property. We’ve taken advantage of the bike rentals many times, and their summer Kids for All Seasons has supervised activities for kids ages 5 through 12. It’s easy to book babysitting through the hotel and enjoy a little grownup time during your family vacation.
TIP: When you’re ready to book a Santa Barbara hotel, keep in mind that we have access to exclusive VIP amenities. If you book through my Santa Barbara Virtuoso page, you’ll get extras like complimentary breakfasts, room upgrades, and spa credits.

Visiting the USS Midway Museum is truly one of the most interesting things to do in downtown San Diego. The USS Midway was one of America’s longest-serving aircraft carriers in the 20th century (1942–1992) and is now a floating museum that is docked permanently along the popular downtown Embarcadero waterfront area.
When you visit the USS Midway Museum, you’ll learn what life was like on board this floating city, along with quite a bit of military history. It is hard to believe that 4500 sailors once lived and worked here (200,000 throughout the years, in total).
Below, you’ll find my top tips for visiting the USS Midway Museum and all the information you’ll need to plan your visit.
USS Midway Museum Tickets
Go straight to the gate and skip the ticket booth.
Who Visits the USS Midway?
Visiting the USS Midway Museum is fun for many reasons, so nearly everyone can visit and enjoy the experience. You’ll see veterans and current military personnel, especially Navy service members, visiting this museum.
Children frequently visit on school-sponsored field trips conducted by USS Midway staff (our daughter’s elementary school takes an annual field trip here). It is a must-visit for San Diego tourists, and for locals alike.
USS Midway Volunteers and Docents Add Incredible Value

Hands down, the museum would not be what it is without the tireless dedication of its volunteers and docents. You’ll find the latter particularly insightful as many were sailors on the ship when it was still in service. Oh, the stories they can tell that will enhance your experience. It’s worth keeping an eye out for them when you’re visiting the USS Midway Museum.

Restored, Vintage Aircraft

The USS Midway has dozens of restored vintage aircraft, including jets and helicopters, on the outside flight deck and below in the main hangar. For many, this section is a highlight of visiting the USS Midway Museum.
Others who know a lot more about aircraft may find that their knowledge enables them to appreciate these planes and helicopters on a much deeper, meaningful level. Kids, in particular, love this part of the museum because they can get right into the cockpits of many of the aircraft and pretend to fly.
Flight Simulators A La Carte
There are several enticingly-elaborate flight simulators available to ride in the main hangar. Our daughter and her friends always ask to ride them. The cost of one ride is $16 (for either one or two people), but they are really cool. It’s worth doing at least once.
Highlights Beyond the Vintage Aircraft
Everyone who visits the USS Midway will find their own favorite spots. My daughter and her friends enjoyed these areas of the ship the most:
The brig, which is tiny!
The kitchen, which fed hundreds at a time in a remarkably small space
The electrical turbines
A sentry post where a guard (now a mannequin), stationed in front of an access door to weaponry/missiles, was apparently authorized back in the day to shoot any trespasser who crossed a yellow line painted on the floor in front of him
USS Midway Dining Options
A lot of people visiting the USS Midway Museum choose to eat at one of the many downtown San Diego restaurants nearby, but there is also a self-service bistro called the Midway Marketplace on the Hangar Deck that offers pre-made sandwiches, salads, snacks and more for sale. (Note that the Fantail Café which served recipes from the ship’s 1945 cookbook is now closed.)
USS Midway Gift Shop
Visiting the USS Midway Museum usually involves a stop at the gift shop — especially if you’re visiting the USS Midway Museum with kids. My husband chaperoned my daughter’s recent field trip to the USS Midway, and the girls lured him into the gift shop where they bought a tub of slime.
You’ll find a wide variety of logo items and toys in the shop, but what caught my husband’s eye was a small collection of ‘vintage’ 1950s candies for sale near the register, a good souvenir option for visitors looking for something small and sweet.
If you don’t want to buy souvenirs, you can also make your own with the USS Midway chocolate chip cookie recipe.
Important Logistics
Visiting the USS Midway Museum involves a lot of walking, stair climbing, and bending. That’s because this WWII-era ship has very narrow stairs, low ceilings, and cramped hallways that may pose unique challenges for some visitors. That said, there are several elevators, and about 60% of the exhibits are wheelchair accessible.
The sights on the USS Midway that are most popular with visitors are deep inside the ship, far from natural light, wind, or other weather. Don’t skip a visit if you happen to be in San Diego on one of our rare drizzly days.
As mentioned above, the flight deck on top is one of the biggest draws. It is totally open to the sky, and accessible no matter what the weather.
It’s a good idea to wear layers when you’re visiting the USS Midway Museum. You might want a hat or a cover up when you’re exploring the flight deck and it’s nice to be able to take off a layer when you check out the cramped hot quarters below.
USS Midway Tickets

You’ll need tickets for the USS Midway Museum, but you don’t need to pay full price. There are multiple tiers of USS Midway Museum admission prices, with different prices for adults, seniors, students, retired military, and more, as well as a discount for purchasing tickets online. USS Midway Museum admission is free for children under the age of 5 years old.
The USS Midway Museum admission fee includes a self-guided audio tour that is narrated by former sailors on the ship. The tour takes visitors to about 60 locations. If you were to visit all the locations, it would take about 3 hours, but most people pick and choose the locations that they find most interesting.
There are two ways to buy USS Midway discount tickets:
Buy tickets through aRes Travel (these are often discounted)

How to Get to the USS Midway Museum
The USS Midway Museum is located at 910 North Harbor Drive in San Diego. The Midway is docked right at the end of Broadway, alongside Navy Pier, and is therefore very walkable to and from most downtown San Diego hotels.
If you plan to take the trolley or a train, the MTS station and Santa Fe Depot station are just a few blocks from the Midway (a 5-minute walk).
There are about 300 parking spaces located on Navy Pier immediately adjacent to the ship, but you’ll pay for it ($10-$20) and it tends to fill up quickly during the summer and on holidays. Metered parking is available on the streets near the USS Midway Museum with a two-hour time limit. Walking will give you maximum flexibility and eliminates the need to find parking. If you have to drive, plan to arrive early in the day.

San Diego luxury hotels are all quite different from each other. This often makes it a tough decision for travelers searching for the one that will best suit their needs. The goal of this post to guide readers toward the best luxury hotels in San Diego for their particular situations. I normally list hotels in order from north to south, but in this case, I think it’s prudent to list my top picks first.
Some of the luxury hotels I review below are beachfront or are near our beautiful San Diego beaches, others are located downtown or near world-class shopping in La Jolla, and some are more family-friendly than others, but all of the best luxury hotels in San Diego I’ve reviewed are well-appointed and beautiful, with excellent service.
As readers of this site know, I love my luxury hotels and I love helping people find great rates. If there’s a clear way to book that will give you the best value, you’ll find more information and a link in the listing. If not, you’ll find a link to check the best prices across multiple travel sites.
Fairmont Grand Del Mar
Location: Carmel Valley (East of Del Mar)
Why go: Fairmont Grand Del Mar is considered one of the best luxury hotels in San Diego and is also on TripAdvisor’s top 25 list for best luxury hotel in the nation.
It’s one of only eleven Forbes fifteen-star properties in the world (for the hotel, spa, and Addison restaurant). Addison was also recently awarded a Michelin star, making it San Diego’s only Michelin-starred restaurant.
You may just not want to leave, making it a perfect staycation choice for local couples, families, or singles who need pampering. Decor is Mediterranean-style and the suites, in particular, are beautiful, plentiful, and often surprisingly reasonable for those who need a bit more space. It suits families, business travelers, and couples well. The Signature Terrace rooms are adults-only and surround the adults-only pool.

A rental car is advisable as the resort is located a bit inland without much to do within walking distance. A central San Diego location with easy access to the I-5 freeway makes it easy to get to attractions like LEGOLAND® to the north and Balboa Park to the south.
Awards: TripAdvisor Top 25 Luxury Hotels in the United States (209), AAA Four Diamonds, three Forbes five-stars each for Addison, the hotel, and spa.
Reservations: Fairmont Grand Del Mar is a Virtuoso® property which means that we can book you in with the following amenities (keep an eye out for their 3rd-night-free promotion which is valid on certain dates):

Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara, North San Diego
Location: Aviara (Carlsbad)
Why go: Stay here if you’d like a home away from home with the usual flawless Four Seasons service. Most of the villas at Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara have kitchens or kitchenettes as well as separate bedrooms and living areas that provide travelers with plenty of space.
This is also your best option for extended stays and multigenerational travel (though a stay of any length will be an enjoyable one). The dining at Seasons Restaurant is lovely and changes seasonally — and sometimes daily as the Chef de Cuisine is inspired by the local farmers’ markets — so there’s always something new. If you’re a fan of the brand, like I am, note that this is the best luxury hotel in San Diego, California for all types of travelers.
See also: Detailed Guide to Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara, North San Diego
Hotel amenities:
Kids Club 760 with fun activities such as arts and crafts, ping pong, video games and dive-in movies (unstaffed)

A special dining experience like the chef’s table and kitchen counter where guests pull up a stool to interact with chefs and taste bites in the open kitchen
Good to know: The Park Hyatt Aviara is next door, so guests can enjoy dining there, too. Aviara is an inland residential/golf community so it helps to have a rental car. This hotel is outstanding. Of all the top luxury hotels in San Diego, this is one that I haven’t had a single complaint about.
Reservations: Cadence is a Four Seasons Preferred Partner agency which means that I can book you in with additional value-added amenities and services that you will want to take advantage of. (I lived in a Four Seasons hotel, stay in them regularly, and can tell you in detail about nearly every property in their portfolio.)
The Lodge at Torrey Pines
Location: La Jolla (Torrey Pines/UCSD area)

This San Diego luxury hotel is often mentioned in national publications as not only one of the top luxury hotels in San Diego, but also one of the top hotels in all of California.
The spa is excellent, as is its restaurant, A.R. Valentien. They even have complimentary luxury car service to take guests within a five-mile radius, which includes the beach and La Jolla Village. I truly believe that The Lodge at Torrey Pines has deserves its AAA Five Diamond rating, which just 2 hotels nationwide earned in 209.

It’s also a great spot to recharge your batteries given its wellness offerings. And guests can look forward to golfing at some of the region’s best courses, including some that are otherwise private.
In other words, there’s a good reason Rancho Valencia has been ranked the California Resort by U.S. News & World Report Travel and earned a Five Star Spa rating from Forbes Travel Guide. When you stay here, you won’t lack for anything.

Beach Village at The Del
Location: Coronado (Beach Village is a private enclave in the Hotel Del Coronado)
Why go: You will enjoy the very best beach vacation possible at this San Diego luxury hotel. This is by far the best luxury choice. Beach Village is a private enclave at Hotel Del Coronado with designer cottages and many VIP amenities.
Only guests of Beach Village have access to its pools, common areas, and breakfast at the Windsor Cottage. It is much quieter than staying on the main resort and popular for groups and multigenerational travel because most cottages have full kitchens. If your idea of true luxury is total privacy, then you’ll definitely find that this one of the best luxury hotels in San Diego.

Hotel Del Coronado
Location: Coronado
Why go: You like historic hotels with a big list of amenities. The red roof of this historic San Diego hotel has become one of the city’s icons. The roster of Hollywood celebrities, U.S. Presidents, and other dignitaries who have stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado since its opening in 888 is nothing short of impressive.
It’s San Diego’s best full-service beachfront resort and a four-star property. Coronado Municipal Beach in front of the hotel has beautiful and expansive white sand. It’s one of the best places to go to the beach in San Diego. You can also walk to the shops and restaurants on Orange Avenue from the hotel, though it has enough activities onsite that you may not want to leave.
See also: Detailed Guide to Hotel Del Coronado
Hotel amenities:

7 shops to browse (Babcock & Story is my personal favorite)
Several beachfront dining and cocktail areas that are amazing venues during sunset
San Diego’s best Sunday brunch
Full-service Spa at The Del with packages for ages 3 and up
Good to know: Restaurants and shops on Orange Avenue are within walking distance and there is a ferry from downtown San Diego to Coronado (the ferry is about a 30-minute walk from the hotel or short Uber ride). The resort can feel very busy during peak times as residents and tourists visit the shops and restaurants during the day. It is not a good choice for people looking for a quiet getaway, but it is one of San Diego’s icons and the hotel that is most requested by readers of this site. I recommend making dining reservations (including breakfast) and spa reservations in advance if traveling during a holiday week. Speaking of holidays, there is also quite a bit to do during the holidays at Hotel Del Coronado from a seaside ice skating rink to other special programming. And if you’re getting married, you should know that in June of 209, this San Diego luxury hotel completed its renovation of Vista Walk, a re-imagined outdoor space ideal for weddings and other events for up to 900 guests.
I have also written a very detailed guide to Hotel Del Coronado that addresses how to select a room and much more. A $200 million renovation is underway and construction is visible around the resort. You need to know the following before making a reservation:
From September 26, 209–May 2020, the main pool will be closed for renovation.
From September 2–May 2020, the California Cabanas will be closed for renovation.
If you are staying prior to October 4, 209, book into the Victorian Building for the best experience due to utility work near the Ocean Towers.
Book ocean view rooms if possible (avoid resort view for now as they may overlook construction).
Read the latest updates regarding the renovation here (click under terms and conditions) before booking in.
Winter programming is scheduled per usual.
Guests continue to book in and have a great time!
Awards: AAA Four Diamonds, Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Award and many more
Reservations: The Hotel Del Coronado is a Virtuoso property which means that we can book you in with the following value-added amenities:
Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability (room upgrades are not possible in Beach Village)
Daily Buffet breakfast, for up to two in room guests (roughly a $00/day value as it includes tax and gratuity)
$00 USD Equivalent Spa Services credit (not combinable, no cash value if not redeemed in full)
Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability
Complimentary Wi-Fi
The benefits above usually outweigh any AAA, military or other discount, however, you can also check rates on Hilton as the hotel is a Curio Collection by Hilton property.
*If using a mobile device, scroll to the bottom of the Virtuoso page, click “Full Site” to enable the desktop version, and you’ll be able to access rates and online booking. Do not input any children traveling with you as they may be priced as adults (common in travel agency software for some hotels). Place them in the booking notes and I’ll add them in when I double-check your reservation.

Some people feel that it is not up to par with other Park Hyatt locations, but it is typically priced lower than other Park Hyatts. Read about our recent stay at Park Hyatt Aviara Resort.

La Valencia Hotel
Location: La Jolla (Village)
Why go: La Valencia is a boutique hotel above La Jolla Cove and in the heart of La Jolla’s main Village business and shopping distance. Built in 926, “The Pink Lady” is a great spot for people who want to go carless in La Jolla and have everything they need within walking distance.
Ocean views abound and it’s the spot that well-heeled travelers who want to stay in La Jolla will likely enjoy most. La Valencia is considered the best luxury hotel in the La Jolla Village and it is just stunning. In 209, La Valencia was included in (OH!) San Diego, the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s tour of 00-plus sites chosen for notable architecture and historical significance.

Good to know: This La Jolla luxury hotel is pet-friendly. Weekend brunch at The MED restaurant is one of the most popular brunch spots in San Diego, and I love lunch there, too. They have a lot of different room and villa types starting with the Vintage King Ocean (note that while it has ocean views, the room is 250 square feet). I think the Villa King Ocean or Villa King Ocean Suite accommodations are the nicest, as they are in a quieter part of the hotel and closer to La Jolla Cove.

L’Auberge Del Mar
Location: Del Mar
Why go: L’Auberge Del Mar is a luxury boutique hotel that is reminiscent of a private, coastal estate. It’s the best option for people who want to stay in the heart of Del Mar where a number of great restaurants and shops are all within walking distance. It is across the street from the beach but has its own walkway to the sand. The spa is excellent, as is the dining. In fact, L’Auberge Del Mar’s signature restaurant, KITCHEN 540, recently earned Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence in its annual Restaurant Awards competition.
Hotel amenities:
2 Guest rooms including seven suites ranging from 500 – 222 square feet
All rooms have coastal, garden, or village views with balconies or patios, in-room coffee service, complimentary newspapers, Wi-Fi, 42″ flat screen TVs, sitting area/desk, iHome stereo systems
Recently-refreshed interiors are decorated with a beach casual, upscale chic look by the exclusive Barclay Butera

Dogs are welcome
Several excellent onsite dining options, including Kitchen 540
Beach cruisers available onsite
Two lighted championship tennis courts
A recently debuted seasonal beach butler sets up chairs, umbrellas, towels for guests
Beach picnics available for ordering
Good to know: The hotel tends to welcome more couples seeking romantic getaways than it does families. The beach is across the street but easy to access. It is the best San Diego luxury hotel in the coastal Del Mar neighborhood. KITCHEN 540 has a wine list 225 bottles long, so this is also definitely one of the top luxury hotels in San Diego for wine lovers.

Reservations:
Rancho Bernardo Inn
Location: Rancho Bernardo
Why go: When it’s easiest to stay in East County San Diego, the Rancho Bernardo Inn is your place. It’s a nice boutique hotel with truly fabulous spa facilities and it is convenient to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, nearby wineries such as Bernardo Winery, and golf. It’s quiet over here and kids like this hotel. It makes a great staycation option for people who live in San Diego, too. One thing I love about dining at this San Diego hotel is that there is a chef’s garden — many greens and herbs used in the hotel’s restaurants are gathered by staff the same day they’re served.
Hotel amenities:
Recently-renovated 8-hole San Diego Championship Golf Course
Incredible spa with products featuring organic and natural ingredients (like food)
Saline pool at the spa, an adults-only pool, and a family pool
In-room camping package that kids love
Fitness center

You’ll enjoy big rooms, a lovely rooftop pool, and a fantastic location in the heart of Gaslamp. Guests can also take advantage of the adjacent AquaVie Spa + Wellness Center during their stay.
There is also a lovely Sunday champagne brunch at Le Fontainebleau, and The Westgate Hotel is within walking distance of many popular Gaslamp restaurants and shopping. Rooftop pool with views of downtown
One of the best Sunday brunches in San Diego at Le Fontainebleau
Luxury linens and 49″ LED TVs
Handcrafted European furniture
Good to know: It’s not a huge hotel and can’t really be compared to five-star hotels in Paris, but it is lovely for those who want to enjoy European hospitality and decor while in one of the best luxury hotels in the San Diego area. It’s a four-star property, and offers very good value for the price.

Best Hotels in San Diego for Families
Even though we live in the city, I have taken my daughter to many of the best family friendly hotels in San Diego for staycations and little getaways. Any of the above hotels will welcome your children with open arms, but the fact is that the list of the best luxury hotels in San Diego, California for families is somewhat smaller than the list of luxury hotels in general.
It’s worth noting that not all of the best hotels in San Diego for families are located on or even near the beach, and the most popular tourist attractions in the city are spread out far and wide. If you’re looking for a luxury hotel that’s close to all of the major attractions so it’s easier to get around with your little ones, you won’t find one. My advice is that you look at the items at the top of your itinerary and choose a hotel that’s close to what you want to see the most.
That said, I do have my favorites. If you want to stay downtown and keep your kids occupied, the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego is fantastic and has its own summer camp for children ages 4-2. La Jolla Shores may be the best choice for families who want to stay right on the beach without spending a lot. But for luxury, you have to check out the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, which is full of options and activities for families on such beautiful grounds.
Which Luxury San Diego Hotels Would I Choose?
The answer is that it depends. There are usually a few things that come into play when booking rooms at the best luxury hotels in the San Diego area (or any hotel anywhere) that I ask people to think about first. Ask yourself:
Where in San Diego will you be spending most of your time?
Do you like restaurants, shops and things to do within walking distance?
What do you plan to do in San Diego?
What kind of beach access do you need?
Are you loyal to a particular brand?
How much do you want to spend?
As for when to book, the right answer is probably sooner rather than later — especially if you are planning to visit during summer, spring break, or winter break. The months with the lowest hotel occupancy rates tend to be September, November, December, and January, but occupancy rates are high year round. The sooner you book your rooms, the better your chances of getting great views at great rates.
Remember that when it comes time to book a San Diego luxury hotel, we have access to exclusive VIP amenities where you can enjoy extras like complimentary breakfasts, room upgrades, spa credits, and more by clicking the link below. You can book most San Diego hotels that offer these amenities online (Beach Village and Four Seasons rate requests require filling out this form).

San Diego has one of the best views in the US to spot whales year-round. Because of different whale species migratory patterns, you can find whale watching tours any time of year to wow you and your family.
Gray whales migrate from Alaska to Baja California in the winter and spring, blue whales feed off the San Diego coast in summer, and other species like humpback whales, fin whales, minke whales, and pilot whales make appearances here, too.
Seeing these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat is a one-of-a-kind experience that everyone should enjoy at least once. It is possible to spot whales from the shore sometimes — more on that later — but there are no guarantees.
Your best bet is to book one of the many local whale watching tours. The companies that run these excursions are experts on finding the best views of whales feeding, socializing, and playing.

When you’re booking San Diego tours or looking for things to do in San Diego with kids, definitely include taking a whale watching tour on your list. San Diego is home to one of the largest protected marine sanctuaries in Southern California, and the rich environment attracts lots of marine mammals.
On a two-hour cruise, you’ll usually have whale sightings, and guests on whale watching tours will typically see common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, risso dolphins, and Pacific white-sided dolphins, too.
The Best Times to Take San Diego Whale Watching Tours
The best time to take a whale watching tour will depend on what kind of whales you want to see most.
In the winter and spring, thousands of gray whales travel 6,000 miles down the coastline on their way to the warm calving grounds of Mexico. If you are whale watching in late April or May, you might even be lucky enough to spot moms with their calves!
In the summer and fall, the magnificent blue whale (the largest animal to have ever existed) passes by San Diego as part of the annual breeding and feeding migration. (These large whales migrate further offshore so you’ll need to go out on a boat to see them.)
Fin whales (which are only slightly smaller than blue whales) can be spotted near San Diego year-round, though you’re more likely to encounter them November through March.
Friendly humpback whales can be seen off the coast of San Diego throughout the year. This species is popular with whale watchers for their famous breaching behavior.

A large pod of Pacific common dolphins
You’ll also spot dolphins, harbor seals, and California sea lions on most whale watching tours as you make your way in and out of the harbor. You might see a bonus orca or two, as well.
These San Diego sightseeing tours not only (hopefully) provide the opportunity to see a whale, but will also take you by famous landmarks.
Recommended San Diego Whale Watching Tours
Flagship Cruises & Events
Flagship Cruises & Events twice-daily whale watching tours happen during the gray whale migration roughly between early December and mid-April. Naturalists from Birch Aquarium join the tours, providing guests with additional insight into our ocean and the marine life in it.
A snack bar serves refreshments include hot dogs, sandwiches, chips, soda, alcoholic beverages and more. Their Whale Tail Guarantee means that if you don’t spot a whale during your tour, you may join another tour for free.
Expert captain and naturalists from the San Diego Natural History Museum narrate winter gray whale and summer blue whale watching tours. They consider this the most comfortable yacht in San Diego due to stabilizers that help prevent motion sickness, air-conditioned interiors, and a fully stocked snack bar and full beverage bar. This boat also offers the largest open-air whale watching sun deck in San Diego.
Hornblower Cruises & Events
Whale Check guarantee means that if you don’t spot a whale, you’ll be able to join another tour for free.
Next Level Sailing’s Yacht America
Go gray whale or blue whale watching on the 139-foot Yacht America, a replica of the yacht that won the historic Royal Yacht Squadron’s 100 Guinea Cup race in 1851. Water, soda, chips, and granola bars are provided but you can bring your own food and drinks (with the exception of red wine).
Next Level Sailing offers the only “no seasickness guarantee” in the world and boasts high whale spotting rates. They also guarantee you’ll see a while or they’ll gladly have you onboard one of their whale watching tours again for free.
Everyday California Whale Watching Kayak Tour
One of the best things to do in La Jolla is head out on a kayak tour of the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park. And between about December 1 and March 1 (depending on sightings), you can book a whale-watching kayak tour where guides will take you about 2 miles offshore to spot gray whales.
Use code lajollamom and click the green checkmark for a 20% discount on tours, lessons, and rentals at Everyday California. This includes private surf lessons, kayaking tours, SUP rentals, and more. Like their retail offerings? Use code LJM20 for 20% off of clothes and accessories online.
seasick, bring some seasickness aids just in case.
Whale watching tours are usually very respectful of whales and other marine animals so you won’t get that close on your tour.
Whale Watching from the San Diego Shore
If there’s no time in your itinerary to book a whale watching tour or you’re not a fan of boating in open waters, you may still be able to spot some whales from the shore — if you’re lucky. Simply keep an eye out while you’re touring these spots, which are popular with visitors to San Diego anyway.
One well-loved spot for shoreline whale watching in San Diego is actually La Jolla. Try scanning the waters near Ellen Browning Scripps Park above La Jolla Cove, Torrey Pines Reserve, or Birch Aquarium.
It’s also possible to spot whales from land at Cabrillo National Park, but it’s all about being lucky (you’re better off seeing whales on a tour).
You can also find special whale watching kayak tours. There’s nothing quite like watching pods of huge gray whales swimming close by as you paddle along.
Just keep in mind that whale watching tours often have whale spotters and can move around the open waters along the California coastline to find roving pods.
When you watch for whales from the shore or from a kayak, you may or may not spot any on a given day.
More to Things Do in San Diego for Whale Lovers
If you’re crazy about whales, there are things to do in and around San Diego that you’ll definitely enjoy. At SeaWorld® San Diego, you can see orcas, beluga whales, and bottlenose dolphins up close, and there’s a huge array of exhibits featuring other marine animals plus lots of great rides.
Birch Aquarium showcases the research of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It’s a perfect stop for marine life enthusiasts and budding oceanographers or anyone who wants to enjoy a family day out. There are hands-on exhibits and more than 60 fish and invertebrate habitats. The Voices In The Sea exhibit, which is all about whale communication, is a must-see for whale lovers.

The nine best family hotels in San Diego that I review below really do offer something for all ages. They’re scattered across the county — on the beach, near the beach, and further inland — and are perfect for vacations and staycations. If you’ve been a reader for a while, then you know that I look at hotels with an eye toward family-friendliness.
The kid-friendly San Diego hotels I recommend to friends and family have plenty of amenities for adults, as well as for children, and top-notch service. Below, I’ve summarized what stands out about the best kid-friendly hotels in San Diego, CA so you can find a great place to stay.
TIP: If there’s a clear way to book that will give you the best value, I’ve mentioned it here. If not, there will be a link that will help you find the best price across multiple travel sites. I’m not a fan of paying full price when I don’t have to, so in addition to sharing hotel discounts and extras, I’ve also written extensively about San Diego discounts and how to get discounted California theme park tickets. Check out those links for ways to save on a San Diego vacation.

The resort fee usually does not appear in rate quotes. There is not a lot to do within walking distance so a rental car is advisable for sightseeing off of the resort.

Good to Know: This is a busy resort. Most of the time, the service is very good and guests are very happy. During peak seasons, it’s advisable to make spa and dining reservations (including breakfast during winter break) before arrival. Restaurants and shops on Orange Avenue are within walking distance and there is a ferry from downtown San Diego to Coronado on the other side of the island (a quick Uber or 30-minute walk from the hotel). There is also quite a bit to do during the holidays at Hotel Del Coronado from a seaside ice skating rink to other special programming.
I have also written a very detailed guide to Hotel Del Coronado that addresses how to select a room and much more. A $200 million renovation is underway and construction is visible around the resort. From September 26, 209–May 2020, the main pool will be closed for renovation. From September 26–May 2020, the California Cabanas will be closed for renovation. Winter programming is scheduled per usual. You can read more about it here (click under terms and conditions) but guests continue to book in and have a great time. Book ocean view rooms if possible (avoid resort view for now as they may overlook construction).
Awards: AAA Four Diamonds (2005-208); Top 0 Best Hotels in San Diego, U.S. News & World Report, 209; and many more.
Reservations:
Note: If your stay falls between now and October 209, please book into the Victorian building due to renovation work near the Ocean Towers. Or, ideally, consider Beach Village at The Del (details below).
f you’re considering a specialty suite at Hotel Del Coronado, take a look at Beach Village as pricing can be similar.
Beach Village at The Del
Neighborhood: Coronado
Kids’ club: Yes. Guests also use DelVentures at the sister property, Hotel Del Coronado.
Why go: You want the most luxurious beach vacation possible in San Diego. Only Beach Village guests can access the property’s pools and exclusive Windsor Beach Club. Plus, as the sister property to adjacent Hotel Del Coronado, you’d have access to the amenities like the spa, fitness center, classes, dining and more on the main resort listed above. Accommodations here are outfitted like designer residences.
Amenities for kids:
Everything listed above at Hotel Del Coronado
Amenities for parents:
Everything listed above at Hotel Del Coronado

Access to the members-only Windsor Beach Club (Memorial Day through Labor Day)
Exclusive VIP shopping perks at Fashion Valley Mall
Complimentary Del Beach lounge chairs and umbrellas
Beach access: The beach is right in front of the hotel.
Good to know: Expect to pay over $999/night plus $35/night resort fee and tax for a double queen villa room, the entry-level accommodations. Larger families can fit into these accommodations as the double queen Coastal View and Ocean View Villa Rooms have two queen beds and a double sofa sleeper. The Windsor Beach Club is for guests and local residents with memberships. It can be crowded due to the latter.
Hotel Del Coronado is going through an exciting multi-stage renovation through 202. If you want to enjoy the main resort’s activities with the least possible risk of disruption, please stay at Beach Village between now and 202.
Reservations: The Virtuoso amenities you can book in with through us at Beach Village at The Del are the same as Hotel Del Coronado, and usually more advantageous than Hilton Honors rates if you will eat breakfast on the property. You’ll need to request a rate as Beach Village is unable to be booked online through Virtuoso.
La Jolla Shores Hotel
Neighborhood: La Jolla
Kids’ club: No
Why Go: You’d like to base the family in La Jolla (near UCSD) at a kid-friendly beachfront San Diego resort that won’t break the bank. La Jolla Shores beach here is one of the best places to learn how to surf, stand-up paddleboard, or kayak La Jolla’s rare 600-acre underwater ecological reserve. It is very easy to take the kids to the beach for an hour or two, break in the room, and return to the beach again in the afternoon. We staycationed at La Jolla Shores Hotel a few years ago and loved it but the rooms have all been refreshed since then.
Amenities for kids:
A flat, sandy beach right in front of the hotel
Kellogg Park playground is next door with swings, slides and a huge grassy area for picnics and games
Heated outdoor swimming pool and wading pool
Ping pong on the patio
Amenities for Parents:
Gorgeous ocean views from The Shores Restaurant and the famous Marine Room restaurant next door
Private beach BBQs and s’mores can be arranged
It’s an eco-friendly hotel
Tennis lessons on two courts by USPTA pros
Complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels
Nightly beach BBQs available by reservation (BYO food or order from their beach cookout shopping list for delivery)
Small fitness center
In-room massages
Complimentary shuttle within local La Jolla area (includes Birch Aquarium)
Beach access: A small boardwalk separates the hotel from the beach. Run back and forth from your room to the sand with ease.
Good to know: The swimming pool isn’t huge. It’s not a fancy hotel, and family-owned and operated, which means that things like sandy bare feet are okay when going from beach to room. They want families to feel comfortable here.
The awesome shops and restaurants on Avenida de la Playa are a short walk away including Piatti, the Cheese Shop, Surf Diva and more. As the name implies, this hotel is located in the La Jolla Shores neighborhood and not in the main village of La Jolla. It’s much quieter over here and the beach is miles better.

Beach access: Beachfront and about as close to the beach as a hotel can get in San Diego.
Good to know: This property is incredibly popular for multigenerational trips. The buildings have an older appearance on the exterior but accommodations have been recently refreshed on the interior. It is considered a three-star property but does appeal to luxury travelers because of the private beach and intimate experience. They also have two-bedroom accommodations for larger families. The beachfront rooms and suites are so close to the beach that you will hear the ocean at night and the occasional BBQ smoke may waft into your room. Light sleepers may want to book rooms in the garden area.
Omni La Costa Resort & Spa
Neighborhood: La Costa (South Carlsbad)

One- or two-bedroom villas that blend vacation and home
Family suites have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a living room
Seasonal twilight golf
A huge variety of fitness classes on offer throughout the day
Beach access: Drive or take an Uber.
Good to know: It’s more of a four-star property. Many first floor rooms have French doors that open to a nice patio. Signature rooms and La Costa suites are closest to the family pool (location can be requested but not guaranteed). La Costa rooms are a further walk to the lobby and family pool. I have written a detailed guide to Omni La Costa Resort & Spa that addresses how to select a room and other important details. Food and drink service at the family pool is seasonal and the pools can close early during the off-peak season based on occupancy.
Awards: Golf Digest Editor’s Award (209), Condé Nast Traveler – 5 Best Hotels in San Diego, 208
Reservations: We can add these benefits to Omni La Costa’s best available rate (not sale rates). Given this, check here first to see which rate works best for you. If you have decided on a room and would like the value-added benefits, please use this form.
Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara, North San Diego
Neighborhood: Carlsbad
Kids’ club: No, but they do have a sizeable game room.
Why go: Most of the villas at Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara, North San Diego have kitchens or kitchenettes, separate bedrooms, and living areas. They feel like home away from home and are excellent for extended stays in addition to large families. This Four Seasons here offers upscale touches present in sister properties around the globe and excellent service, which fans of the brand will appreciate. This another top pick for San Diego family hotels that earns a lot of repeat guests.

Board games to check out and use in the villa

Good to know: The Park Hyatt Aviara is next door so guests can enjoy dining there, too. As mentioned previously, Aviara is inland from the beach so a rental car is advised. I’ve only received positive feedback from guests at this hotel. It’s somewhat of a hidden gem but people love it. They now have a $25/night hotel fee that includes self-parking.
Reservations: Cadence is a Four Seasons Preferred Partner agency which means that we can book you in with additional value-added amenities and services. (I lived in a Four Seasons hotel, stay in them regularly, have written for Four Seasons Magazine, and can tell you in detail about nearly every property in their portfolio.)
Park Hyatt Aviara Resort
Neighborhood: Aviara (Carlsbad)
Kids’ Club: Yes. Camp Hyatt is seasonal, usually in the summertime. Hours and days vary so call to check.

Awards: AAA Five Diamonds
Reservations: I have access to Virtuoso amenities at Park Hyatt Aviara.
*If on a mobile device, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Full Site” to access rates and booking. When searching rates on Virtuoso, do not input your children as it will price them as adults. Mention how many kids you’re traveling with (and ages) in the special requests section and I’ll add them when I double-check your reservation.
Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego
Neighborhood: Downtown San Diego
Kids’ club: Yes. Camp Hyatt is seasonal and has summer hours.
Why go: You want a downtown San Diego hotel with water views and don’t mind size. This hotel is huge with over 600 rooms spread over two towers. However, it’s located on the San Diego Bay and within walking distance to some of San Diego’s best restaurants, attractions, San Diego Convention Center and PETCO Park.
Amenities for kids:
Seasonal Camp Hyatt for kids ages 4–2 which offers arts and crafts, sea life education and more fun during the summer (check the schedule)

Amenities for parents:
The extraordinary view from Top of the Hyatt restaurant
Four tennis courts by the bay with a USPTA pro available for lessons
The full-service Marilyn Monroe Spa
24-hour gym
Pool cabana rentals
Bayside running trails
Adults-only pool
Grab-and-go options including Starbucks, open 24 hours
Reasonably-priced suites
Club Lounge which can be added to any room for an additional fee
Beach access: You’ll need to drive or take a ferry to Coronado beaches. Or, drive to La Jolla. If you plan to spend a lot of time at the beach, downtown isn’t the best spot.
Good to know: Again, the hotel is large and a bit corporate, but it’s well-located and families love having so much to do within walking distance at this downtown San Diego hotel. I’ve written a detailed guide to Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego that goes over the various room types and more. Do not expect personalized five-star service and amenities as the hotel is simply too big. The Club Lounge can be busy.
Which Kid-Friendly Hotels in San Diego Would I Choose?
I have loved our stays at all the best family hotels in San Diego. It’s nice to take a staycation now and then, and we’re lucky to live in a city with so many wonderful accommodations to choose from.
So, the answer to the question above depends on factors like where in the city you want to stay, what you plan to do while visiting San Diego, how much you want to spend, and what kinds of amenities you prefer in a hotel.
As you can see above, some of the best kid-friendly hotels in San Diego are not near the beach, and a lot of the most popular tourist attractions in San Diego are scattered widely around the county.
In general, if your plan is to hit most of the city’s top attractions and go carless, look at hotels in the heart of downtown (or maybe even Coronado). If you want to stay right on the beach — and maybe learn to surf — without putting too much of a dent in your budget, then the La Jolla Shores is a wonderful choice (though it can get pricey during peak season). If you want a full-service resort on the beach, Hotel Del Coronado and Beach Village at The Del are hands-down the way to go.
Families looking for luxury accommodations should check out the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, which is one of the best hotels in San Diego and tops when it comes to family-friendly activities.
The hotels on this list that receive consistently rave reviews though, with fantastic behind-the-scenes service to match are:
Fairmont Grand Del Mar
Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara
Park Hyatt Aviara
Other Things to Consider When Choosing a San Diego Hotel
For all of its laid back character, San Diego is still a big, busy city. Hotel occupancy rates hover at around 75% throughout the year (because there’s no off-season in San Diego) and they can jump as high as 90% during the summer.
The months with the lowest hotel occupancy rates tend to be January, September, November, and December (outside of winter break), but even then, booking rooms in one of the best family hotels in San Diego can be tough. Your best bet is usually to book as early as possible.
Remember, we can give you access to exclusive VIP amenities at San Diego hotels where indicated on this list where you can enjoy extras like complimentary breakfasts, room upgrades, spa credits, and more at no extra cost to you.
Do you have a best family hotel in San Diego that’s missing from this list?
