Really cogent summary of the start of The Pacific. When I first saw it, I felt about as lost as Leckie and co. - I remember reading a review that made a flip remark about the difficulty in identifying white boys wearing helmets, which is kinda true - but getting thrown into the middle like this works really well as things develop. I've really come to love this show and rewatch it whenever I can.
Dude, the @hboww2rewatch is going to be soooo good.
The Pacific really just throws us into the war the same way it throws these men into it - we don't get H company at bootcamp, or how JP and Manny and John became friends. We're just - there. It's Guadalcanal, and it's awful, and mind-boggling to Leckie in its awfulness. You don't get to pick your wars, and here we are, in the middle of the Pacific, on islands your family can't find on a map, and there's no water and you've got jungle sores, and your mom is writing to ask if you want your dress blues.
One of the things I'm appreciating, watching in this order, is just how much this show anchors us in their families - our three main leads all start at home. (And how much I dislike Leckie's dad!!!!)
We also get a staggering sense of how much they don't know. "Professor Leckie, enlighten us." And Leckie gives a flippant answer, a line of poetry from Alexander Pope's translation of the Iliad - Without a sign his sword the brave man draws, And asks no omen but his country's cause.
One wonders if he's thinking about those words and his country's cause as he shoots the soldier trying to cross the river. That man, too, had a cause and a country. What makes one better or worse? The poets didn't tell him it would be like this.
We also get a sense, so quickly, of how the war becomes who you're with, where you are, right now, to the exclusion of everything else. H Company watches the naval battle in the distance, and then learns, the next morning, that Admiral Turner and the Navy have all left. Their war has just become very, very small.
And by the end of the episode, where they're all reading letters from home, you (and Leckie) realize just how far away from home they really are. Dress blues. Birthdays. Incredible.

Who says we don't need more Chick Harding?!?
So here's an alternate universe that zero people asked for:
Harding is shot down.
We know that Harding flew several missions, something that's not depicted on the show, probably for budget or story economics reasons. He flew Trondheim with Blakely, for which he was awarded a Silver Star, and Marienburg (the mission just before Bremen) with Brady. The next time he's on the flight roster is the November 13 raid on Bremen again.
Let's just say he takes that Bremen mission because it's personal now. He sat in that room after Munster and felt every single one of those empty chairs in his soul, and the very next time they flew that route, he decided he was going, too.
We know that there were multiple officers of fairly high rank who got shot down doing observation flights - when he bails out and lands there's nowhere for him to run. He's not young, and while he's in pretty good shape, his gridiron days are well behind him.
("Was it perhaps for revenge?" the interrogator asks with a smile as Harding scowls in his seat. "How quaint. I wonder how Mrs. Harding will see it. I hear Palm Beach is lovely this time of year. ")
The looks on the guys' faces when they see him in the lineup - shoulders squared, in need of a shave, usually very dapper uniform hardly dapper any more. "Couldn't leave you on your own, fellas," he says. "Place wasn't the same without you."
Harding's the escape committee kind - he and Bucky are alike in this. He and Clark don't get along very well. He also decides they need a football team.
("You gonna write her, sir?" Bucky asks one afternoon. "Captain Brennan." Neil stares and Bucky only shrugs. "Come on, sir, it doesn't take a genius." "Doesn't it?" "Not in here, sir." "You gonna write Lieutenant Callaway?" Now it's Bucky's turn to stare and Neil's to smile. "...that was mean, sir." "It didn't take a genius, Egan.")

Shot down 12 enemy fighters? 1,200 holes in our plane? Lost all electrical power? Killed a tree when we landed? Yeah, we back baby.
The swagger is REAL.

The children are learning about the US Civil War. I can’t say it’s going well. (On the bright side, they’re very clear about slavery. We’re solid on that front. It’s the actual war we’re having trouble with.)
“Ms. T, why would his parents name him that?”
I frantically flip through the possible Civil War leaders they could be referencing. “… Well, you know how Stonewall got his nickname, and we’ve talked about Tecumseh, so there’s Sherman, and -”
“No, not them.” They roll their eyes at my ignorance, then pivot back to the point at hand. “That other guy. Useless.” As this describes a number of Civil War leaders, I blink uncomprehendingly at her. “You know, Ms. T, Useless. Useless Grant.”
“Um. … Well -”
Another child raises their hand. “Ms. T, I don’t understand number three.”
Number three is a question about the Battle of Bull Run, asking for explanations about a Confederate victory despite Union advantages. “What paragraph are you looking in?” I ask in a monotone, because I’ve been fielding this question all day.
The student points at the correct paragraph, even focuses in on the quote about Jackson holding off a Union advance. “It says Jackson and the men ‘screamed like furries,’ Ms. T, but why would that help?”
I cough. I cover my mouth with both hands. “That’s ‘furies,’ sweetie,” I inform them, still wheezing. “Like they’re insane with anger,” I elaborate, deciding to skip describing actual furies at this point in time. “Not … not like furries.”
So, here’s how the war is going, one week in: Useless Grant has been made general of the Union forces, but a bunch of furries are preventing him from gaining much ground.
