committed time theft to have thoughts about Arizona at work today. for example: unsure if Connie and Carter are from Maricopa (city) or from Queen's Creek. definitely pinal county kids. I also think that when wormwood finally becomes a bomb then ground zero is going to be Biosphere 2 (exact year is not settled but it will happen during the time when Columbia owned it and crazy ants were taking over). I think I'm leaning Maricopa because the overhead shots I've been seeing of the suburban areas are fucking chilling but I honestly really just love the name Queen's Creek so it's hard to let go </3 anyway I'm really pleased with the biosphere 2 thing because before they explode wormwood sort of melts into the environment around them and warps it into an incredibly dangerous pseudomagical hellscape oasis so them having the raw material of a dying coral reef and rainforest and shit will be fun for me to think about. I also have to decide where Carter lives as an adult. I'm tempted by Flagstaff. I also need a cringe fail low stakes office job for him.

I’ve been following you long enough that your oc’s definitely take up ‘exists in real life’ space in my brain. Really like your art style!

a couple tags on my "chihuahuan desert" piece about wormwood and carter are so interesting because they're interpreting it as an illustration/storyline about transition and even though that wasn't something I was consciously going for (honestly, I was thinking more about detransition [when Connie first sees wormwood in Carter's body, she assumes her brother detransitioned and is confused and kind of horrified by it]). it's really cool to think about the flip side though, like. I've always thought about the wormwood/carter dynamic as kind of a horror story. carter jumps through all these fucking hoops to finally make his body his own and then one day through bad luck he gets killed and the body is stolen and like. wormwood is not taking testosterone wormwood is not cutting their hair and so the body changes in ways that Carter would have hated. but honestly, Carter IS dead. wormwood killed him and THAT was immoral but in a material way what they're doing with the body doesn't actually hurt him (because he is dead) and the ways that wormwood chooses to maintain the body are like. those are wormwood's choices. they shape the body the way THEY want to. it horrifies Connie because she sees the changes and feels like wormwood is erasing her brother but they erased him when they killed them and the rest is really just symbolic (not intentional on wormwood's part, they're just doing their thing, but deeply upsetting to Connie). and idk. wormwood lives in that body. they can't leave it now. they're trapped in it just like Carter felt trapped and to cope they do exercise agency over it. much to chew on :) not to mention that in the split second before wormwood extinguishef Carter's brain the two of them were, for one transcendent moment, perfectly entwined minds. for one moment, wormwood Was carter and carter Was wormwood. and then it was just wormwood in there.

btw this is about an angel possessing some fucking guy after it falls to earth in arizona in order to save its own life, instantly erasing his consciousness forever. it preserves his body in a very literal way while simultaneously altering said body in ways that the man would never have wanted. and the angel just has to live with the knowledge that it took a man's life and stole his body and some people would look at the angel and see any other person and a handful of people would look at the angel and see a loved one irrevocably ruined.

IT'S REALLY FUN FOR ME ALSO. sometimes I think about how for Years and Years Hawthorne existed as Nina's unnamed undrawn father and I kept thinking 'i should really develop him and fausta' and then one day I was like wait a second he could literally be a woman. and as soon as I made that decision the insane love affair of fausta and Hawthorne flooded into my brain and I was overcome.
