“what?” he blurted out, immediately regretting it upon opening his mouth and he shut up. kou hadn’t expected a play of equivalent exchange and it’d rendered him a little bewildered.

though it was seemingly the only way she accepted taking the umbrella, so he wouldn’t be particularly picky about the conditions. 

his head tilted to the side, eyeing the book and looking at the size. it wasn’t too big nor small for his preferences, and it’d be something fit for a rainy day so he could read it in one go.

“alright then, let’s do that. i’ll read the book immediately once i come home!! ”

The girl couldn’t seem to fight grinning after her bargaining trick seemed to work. “You won’t regret this, I promise.” she exclaimed, grabbing hold of the umbrella after placing her small backpack on.

 Although it was true that she lived near by, it was actually a bit of a walk because of the hill. Easy to come down hill into town, but a pain to go back up. She felt bad to put others on the spot, but she was very thankful for his generosity making her walk a bit easier.

“Do you work tomorrow? I can return this back to you as soon as possible. Ah - I can also bring you lunch as well! You can tell me about how you’re liking the book.”

◖◖Kaede sits there, humming thoughtfully at her ice cream.

“You know, I never know what possesses me to buy cones instead of cups,” she starts, gazing down at the way she delicately holds her treat. It stands on her flat palm, with the top of the cone held carefully between her index finger and thumb. Unreasonable to most, but a necessary precaution if she wanted to peacefully eat her snack. “I almost always break them, but I also love eating them. And I get one and think everything will be fine. But then I’m wrong and just get all sticky.”

Kaede sighs, turning to look at the poor person she’s succumbing to her inane chatter. “I–” (Wah!!! Cute girl!!!). “Oh. Um. I’m sorry, cutie. Here I am bothering you while you’re just trying to do your own thing.”

“Pfft - - -”

Kuro covered her mouth while swallowing her bite of icecream before a small chuckle escaped her. The girl beside her on the bench outside the shop decided to strike up a sudden conversation, it almost took her by surprised.

“Ah - Um, ya know, you can actually ask for both! They place your cone upside down in the cup so it won’t be as messy. That’s what I do when I’m feelin’ extra peckish.”

Reaching around into her small bag sitting by her feet, Kuro pulled out and offered the stranger a healthy stack of napkins. “I’m pretty clumsy myself, so I always make sure to be prepared.” ♥ ♥

kou pulled back, persistently trying to give her the umbrella. “well— you have a longer way to go than me just going to my car. i’d rather you have it so you don’t get a cold." 

Kuro began realized the boy wasn’t going to let up, he seemed too polite and caring to do so. A small idea popped into her head as he eyed her book with more interest than a person would over casual small talk.

“Tell ya what, how bout a trade? I’ll only agree to borrow your umbrella if you take my book in exchange. I’m off tomorrow, so I can bring this back to you in the morning. And youuuu-” She smiled, pressing the paperback in his hands. “You can check it out tonight, I would love to hear what you think of it.”

“no worries, i’m just saying since i’m in charge of closing up.” he smiled sympathetically at her, noticing how she’d been completely absorbed into the words written in the book. 

it makes him wonder how long it’d been since he’d picked up a book himself, and piqued his interest by what kind of boko she was reading. “can i ask what book you’re reading?”

kou exclaimed a small sound when taken out of context that she didn’t have an umbrella, a finger raised to signalize she wait. he scurried to the back and returned moments later with a transparent umbrella in hand.

“i have a car so you can take my umbrella.”

“Oh I’m just rereading one of my favorites, it’s Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer.” The girl’s smile began to soften glancing towards her paperback copy. “It makes you wanna just runaway and start fresh, ya know? Ah -”

Her eyes followed the male as he disappeared in a hurry to the back, but as he arrived back with the umbrella, she instantly waved her hands in protest. 

“Oh no no no no no, I can’t take that. E - Even if you have a car, I don’t want you getting soaked on the way. You’ve been working hard all day, that’s the last thing you need!” Although she had her nose is a book all day, when she would occasionally sip her tea, Kuro had been watching him stay cool and collected even with the evening rush.  

It always amazed her seeing a human be so graceful. “I’ll be fine, I’m not gonna melt from a few drips of water”

A soft mumbling caught Kuro by surprise as it cut through the music playing in her earbuds. Upon pulling them out and drawing her attention away from her book, she started to understand her situation clearer. 

“Oh gosh, I’m so sorry.” She smiled softly, a bit embarrassed for not noticing at first. “It seemed like the whole day past by so quickly, huh?” The rain always tend to make time a more foreign concept, turning hours into minutes without any difficulty.

“Actually, I kinda forgot to check the forecast this morning before going out this morning.  I was gonna wait til it let up, but that doesn’t really seem like it’s in the near future.” She started packing up her books and wires, “I don’t live too far so I could probably run quick to avoid getting soak.”

the rain had been going on for hours now, harshly tinkling against the window as if it was threatening to break the glass.

most customers had already left, and not many had entered, mostly because of the bad weather since it usually swarmed with people.

but there were a couple that remained, though kou had to close up the shop and he’d then have to approach a young lady that hadn’t been getting ready to leave like the others.

“ah, excuse me. we’re about to close now. it’s not closing time yet, but just so you know.” he looked outside the window, sighing at the never-changing sight of rain. “but it sure is bad weather outside. did you bring an umbrella with you?”

  A small grin peaked at each corner of the girl’s mouth after hearing the praise. “Ah, thank you! I’m just really happy to finally be able to cook for someone again, ya know? I made sure to include a variety veggies, a growing boy like you needs his nutrients! ” She teased, plopping herself right beside Shinobu while he enjoyed his meal.

  Even though it’s been a while, it seems she thankfully remembered how to properly season for those who actually have normal taste buds. Kuro’s happiest memories have always seemed to revolve around cooking, hopefully with this new agreement placed between them, she’s have more pleasant ones to cherish in the future as well. Along with more practice to improve her skills in the one thing she’s found talent in.

  “I tried to stick to the list of foods you want me to avoid making you, but if you happen to have anymore just be sure to let me know, okay? I want you to be able to eat at least one full meal everyday.”
