Is Reproduction reproductions of the image also art?
The image on the t-shirt name is “Creation of Adam”. It is painted by Michelangelo Buonarroti. The Creation of Adam differs from typical Creation scenes painted up until that time. Today, many people recognize the painting due to the objects like mug, calendars, notebooks or t-shirts. Actually, “ Creation of Adam” is in the famous section of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. After the invention of camera, paintings like “Creation of Adam” began to be recognized and like the photo people start to print them on objects. The painting on the Sistine Chapel ceiling on of a kind and reproduction of an image can not degraded the value of the painting. On the contrary, reproduction increase the value of the painting yet it is decreased the meaning or the idea of the painting. Tony Ash ( Managing Director, Viltra) asserts that “We shouldn’t be dismissive of reproductions of great works of art, which might make them more accessible to the public and are art in their own right. What we should dismiss are cheap imitations of iconic designs.”. I totally agree with him. For instance, artist like Andy Warhol use famous paintings in their art. “ Thirty Better than One” is a great example for my statement. In my opinion, reproductions like this t-shirt are not art because these unique handmade created with skill. Maybe in some way “ Creation of Adam “ is not painting for the sake of art but it includes artistic values. However, these reproductions main intent is make profit by using the popular culture. In fact, some artworks being popular due to intention of make a profit from them.

Another issue is in this period many artists are not painting for the sake of art. Even many of their paintings painting according to others beliefs and decisions.

The Skat Players - Card Playing War Invalids drawing by Otto Dix in 1920. Painting belong to European Modernism area.
