Writing Notes: Frameworks of Health
Tumblr media
The meaning of health has evolved over time but early definitions of health focused on the theme of the body’s ability to function.
Originally health was seen as a state of normal function that could be disrupted from time to time by disease.
Disease - a broad reference to any condition that impairs normal functioning of the body.
BIOMEDICAL MODEL
Most Western countries focus on the physical processes – pathology, biochemistry and physiology of a disease – as primary contributors to health:
This is known as the biomedical model:
According to this model, health means freedom from disease, pain, or defect but not does consider the role of social factors or individual subjectivity.
TRADITIONAL MEDICINE
There is a contrasting model of health that takes a more holistic approach, often referred to as traditional medicine.
Traditional medicine - “the sum total of the knowledge, skills, and practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences indigenous to different cultures” (WHO, 2019).
BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL MODEL
In 1977, American psychiatrist George Engel developed an interdisciplinary model that looked at the interconnection between biology, psychology, and socio-environmental factors.
With his biopsychosocial approach, Engel strived for a more holistic approach to health by recognizing that each patient has his or her own thoughts, feelings, and history.
Engel’s biopsychosocial model views the development of illness through the complex interaction of biological factors (genetic, biochemical), psychological factors (mood, personality, behavior) and social factors (cultural, familial, socioeconomic, medical).
Example: A person may have a genetic predisposition for depression, but he or she may have social factors such as extreme stress at work and family life, and psychological factors such as a perfectionistic tendency, which when combined can trigger this genetic code for depression.

How to Describe Faces in Writing
Tumblr media
A human face reveals a lot about a person.
In creative writing, describing a character’s face can uncover information about who they are and how they feel.
Writers can zoom in on individual features, like the eyes or mouth, or describe a face in its entirety to paint a picture of a character.
Develop a character through their most telling attribute—their face.
Tips for Describing Faces in Your Writing
Use figurative language when describing a character’s face. When you’re introducing a character for the first time and want the reader to create an image in their mind, use figurative language to describe the character’s face instead of just stating the obvious qualities. For example, you can use similes and metaphors. It’s okay to simply say, “She has blonde hair,” but you could also use a simile: “Her hair was golden like the sun.” In Great Expectations Charles Dickens uses a unique metaphor to describe a feature of a character’s face: “His mouth was such a post-office of a mouth that he had a mechanical appearance of smiling.”
Create facial expressions that reveal emotions. How a character’s eyes, eyebrows, nose, forehead, mouth, and chin move in unison can let a reader in on their emotions. A character can have a facial tic when they get nervous. Whether it’s raised eyebrows and a mouth curved into a smile or a furrowed brow and an upper lip curled into a scowl, you can use a character’s expressions instead of dialogue to reveal their feelings about a situation.
Frame your character’s face with a hairstyle that reflects their story. A crewcut might signify a military soldier or someone who likes to be in control. A ponytail or pigtails might indicate a young character. Describe a character’s hair color—black hair, dark hair, brunette, redhead, blonde, gray, or white—in interesting ways instead of just stating the shade. It makes a difference whether your character dyes their hair or keeps it its natural shade. Describe the length of their hair. A confident businesswoman might have short or shoulder-length hair. A musician might have longer hair. Match your character’s hairstyle with their personality.
Make facial hair an element of a character’s style. How a male character keeps his facial hair is telling. If he’s constantly clean-shaven, he might go to a regular corporate job. A bit of stubble can signify a more casual career. From a beard to sideburns to a goatee, facial hair helps paint a picture of a male character and can help represent their life and what they do.
Realize that eyes are windows to the soul. There are endless ways to depict eyes. Describe obvious characteristics like eye color—green eyes, blue eyes, brown eyes, gray eyes, or black eyes. Highlight their shape—round, almond, narrow. Think about the entire orbital structure, from eyelids to eyelashes. Illustrate how the eyes are placed in relation to the character’s face—deep-set, wide-set, or close-set. Give eyes their own movements to tap into a character’s feelings. Let a character’s eyes twinkle, squint, gaze, or glare.
Describe your character’s skin. The tone and texture of a character’s skin can provide insights into a character’s life. A child’s face might be freckled. A sickly character might look pasty. An old cowboy might be good looking and rugged with craggy skin.
Give your character unique facial features. Set a character apart with distinguishing facial features. Give them dimples, freckles, or unique markings on their face. Give them poor vision so they need to wear eyeglasses. Maybe they wear heavy makeup or have piercings. Think of different ways you can create unique facial features that help define a character.

how to use xkit rewritten / trim reblogs on mobile:
updated for december 2022
this method is beta editor / npf compatible
my previous tutorial to trim posts technically still works, but as tumblr is discontinuing legacy posts that method is already outdated and unhelpful for people who have no other option than to use the beta editor.
but fear not! i've figured out how to use xkit rewritten on mobile and it's VERY easy.
install "firefox nightly for developers" OR "firefox beta for testers". must be one of these two, not regular firefox.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
go to settings, scroll down to the "about firefox" page at the end and then click on the logo 5 times until debug mode is enabled.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
back to settings and below add-ons you'll see the 'custom add-ons collections' option.
add 17683742 as the ID and name it 'tumblr' like so:
Tumblr media
the browser will give you a little pop up that the extension is being added and the app is being restarted.
now enter the app again, go to the add-ons section and xkit rewritten should be loaded there. i've included ublock in the collection so you can use both because you absolutely should.
on firefox beta you'll see the extension with a +, click on it to add it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now cut your replies the same way you do it on desktop with xkit rewritten!
save the post as a draft
click on the scissor button
it's done!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
please consider that this is experimental so not all of xkit rewritten's features will work on mobile. trim reblogs does work though!
i still recommend using my roleplay formatter for formatting your replies and then copy pasting the html on your reblog.
other useful links :
this post explains the differences between the two editors and why we're switching.
this post is a tutorial on how xkit rewritten's 'trim reblogs' feature works.

i just broke my phone screen and i can't afford to buy a new one to be honest even if it's 30$ since taking commissions and posting edit ressources here and on twitter is my only personal income.... i know i don't have a lot posted on my kofi, but please don't hesitate to buy some thing there, it would really help ! <3
_________

How to Write Long-Distance Friendships
⊹ Most of the friendship lives on screens now. And no, that doesn’t make it less real. It’s TikToks at Midnight, blurry selfies captioned “alive I guess,” a random “thinking of you” that hits harder than a Shakespeare monologue. These tiny, chaotic digital crumbs? That’s modern affection, guys.
⊹ Time zones are the actual villain. Like, congrats, your best friend is awake when you’re half-dead. You get really good at leaving messages in little bottles ( I mean, texts) that’ll wash up on their shore eight hours later. It's strangely poetic, if you ignore how annoying it is.
⊹ Calls turn into special events... You plan them like dinner reservations. Reschedule them like flaky exes and when they do happen, it’s either three hours of emotional unpacking or fifteen minutes of “I love you but my soul is leaking out my ears.” Either way, it counts.
⊹ They don’t know you're right now. Not really, they weren’t there for the coworker who ruined your day or the little bakery you fell in love with. So you have to explain everything, but sometimes you don’t. And that weird little space between what they know and what they don’t? That’s amazing, for Storytelling.
⊹ You start summarizing your life like a newsletter. “Still alive. Work sucks. Ate something questionable.” Not because you don’t want to share (you do) but because it’s hard to cram the full play-by-play into a 30-second voice note between meetings. Distance edits you down, that’s just how it works.
⊹ Big stuff hits differently. The good, the bad, the absolutely unhinged... it all feels heavier when you can’t scream-laugh or ugly-cry in the same room. No amount of phone calls makes up for sitting on the floor together eating cereal out of the box and feeling like maybe the world isn’t ending.
⊹ And yet, the love finds ways. It shows up in birthday texts sent in the wrong time zone, in Venmo notes like “for coffee and emotional damage,” And in playlists with suspiciously specific vibes.
⊹ Some don’t survive the distance. That’s just the truth, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t real or important. And the ones that do? the ones that hang on through all the missed calls and delayed replies and half-finished conversations? Those are steel-reinforced, weirdly telepathic, practically immortal friendships. The kind worth writing about.
