MASTERMIND AU: AN EXPLANATION AND BACKGROUND

So I’ve not read any other Togami MM! backgrounds, so this is just my interpretation based on the first game (and what little I know about the other installments through my sib).

In DR1, Togami hints at his background (the fight to be heir, his independent climb to the top of the financial world), so you can take away that he thrives on challenge, struggles, and victory. He even goes to the point that he either drops projects that are too easy for him (his stocks) or deliberately sabotages events to make them interesting and/or more difficult (2nd trial).

These are characteristics that I think would make it easy to fall into Despair (tm) and therefore become the puppeteer behind all the horrifying events around the world and in Hope’s Peak. I don’t think it would be too difficult to get his character to a “world domination” mindset, but that’s not all there is to a good mastermind in the DR universe. In fact, I’ve seen a lot of good mm’s (including Junko) whose end goal isn’t world-ruling ultimate dictator kind of deal. It’s Despair (tm).

So here’s my theory: Togami’s backstory changes little, if at all. He’s still the heir to his family’s corporation, and he’s still fiendishly intelligent and obsessed with challenges and victories. However, as time goes on, he realizes that he may be too smart or whatever for this world. At first he’s angry, then resigned, then depressed. It’s at this point where one of my hcs for Togami comes into play. I hc him as having an insane inferiority complex. It explains a lot of his behaviors in canon, and goes a long way to explain why he might become SHSL Despair.

As time goes on, Togami falls into confusion and paranoia. Is he really everything he made himself out to be? Did people take pity on him just to see him succeed? Or worse, is it all a big prank of some kind? Will he wake up to his family disowning him while laughing at his naivete?

(His inferiority won’t be this strong in main verses btw)

In order to fully, truly make sure that he stays where he is, that he keeps his power and influence, then he has to make himself the best person on the planet. Not by building himself up, but by tearing others down. This is when he becomes SHSL Despair and begins plotting to destroy everything and everyone that dares to mock him. Of course, just because he achieves this as MM doesn’t mean that his Despair goes away, oh no. Anyone’s who’s studied dictators or just mental illness in general knows that those kind of feelings don’t go away suddenly. And if you do the wrong thing to quell them, like a massive worldwide coup and making your classmates kill each other, then it gets worse instead of better.

Unless someone else comes along in this AU to pull him out of it, Togami falls further and further into paranoia fueled Despair, and he becomes more and more ruthless as a result.

Personality:

Arrogant, manipulative, and reserved, Togami tends to drive others away. To others, he comes off as out right mean and has been called “monstrous” by more than one person. As the heir to the Togami Family, he considers himself above everyone else he meets, and treats them as such. He actively distances himself from his peers and treats them horribly, to make sure they don’t interact with him. He values competition, challenge and victory above all else, and is brutal and ruthless when it comes to winning.

Togami is also incredibly intelligent, being a financial genius and an incredible strategist. He will often sabotage events if he believes they will be too easy. He is incredibly confident in his abilities, and considers failure as impossible.

Because of his upbringing, he has a pessimistic view of others. He believes that everyone acts out of selfishness, and as a result he disregards emotions and relationships, believing them to be petty and unimportant.
