Went out the other night to get photos of jupiter

hiiii my closest friend in the helpol space is a devotee of ganymede, and i also created an altar to him some time ago! i don't see him mentioned terribly often within this community, just because of the fact he's considered somewhat of a lesser known deity/deified hero. therefore i thought i'd spread the good word on how lovely ganymede is, and what a pleasure it is to worship him.

Domain: homosexual love, mead, cupbearer of the Gods

Mortal and Immortal Life: Ganymede was born as the youngest son of Tros, a King of Troy, and was considered to be the most beautiful mortal man. in some stories, Ganymede is whisked away by the gods in general as recognition of his beauty. in another he is whisked away by Eos, who had a penchant for pursuing beautiful young men in myth. however, the most popular story is that Zeus fell in love with the young man and stole him from Mount Ida.

he is described multiple times as a "cowboy" or shown in shepherds garb, so it may be that Ganymede was working as a shepherd or was tending to his father's flock(s).

Ganymede, otherwise Himeros to Plato, was also considered by some a friend or lover of Eros. in multiple stories they are shown playing knucklebones together, and in one Eros is admonished by Aphrodite for taking advantage of a beginner. this often places Ganymede among the "erotes" or deities of love.

he is thus whisked away by Zeus as an eagle, and delivered to Olympus. here, he either replaces Hebe following her marriage to Hercules, or he becomes devoted solely to caring for Zeus, or they work alongside each other.

following his abduction, Tros is reasonably upset, but is placated by a gift of two divine horses and stories of his son's new immortal status from Hermes.

Ganymede is preserved among the stars as Aquarius, next to the eagle Aquila, and his mixing cup Crater.

Imagery: Ganymede is described sometimes wearing a Phrygian cap and saffron yellow clothing, having long, blond hair, and of course, being otherworldly beautiful. he is sometimes depicted with cockerel (a gift from Zeus), a hoop (or krikos, a popular game), and a lyre. of course, with his station as cupbearer, he often has a golden bowl or cup filled with nectar or unmixed wine. also anything with the aquarius symbol, since that is his constellation.

Offerings (some UPG): alcohol, (drinking) water, honey, milk, writing letters, music (especially lyre), engaging in athletics, feathers (especially eagle), asparagus (fertility), laurel (victory), cabbage (fertility), adam & eve root (love), barley (used in ancient greek rituals), cardamom (lust), rose petals (love). jewelry, perfumes/colognes
