While Laios prepared his supplies, Kabru sat on the edge of the bed, with his head held high, his chest slightly puffed out, and his legs dangling off the edge, touching the floor with his toes. He kept his hands in his lap, idly playing with the edge of the oversized shirt he'd inherited from Laios. He looked excited and nervous, sitting stiffly with a straight back, as if he was going to have a professional picture taken. Well, it was close enough. Laios was no professional, but his drawing of Kabru would technically be a portrait, drawn as faithfully as he was capable of. In colour. That made it feel different from the countless times Laios had drawn him before. More serious and intimidating and important. More real. Something that one should be careful not to mess up.

“Ah, sorry. I'm almost done,” he said, feeling Kabru tighten his embrace and lean against his back. Kabru was a really thorough teeth-brusher. Laios had assumed that he'd be done with the chores by the time he came out of the bathroom, smelling of mint and soap and deodorant, but evidently he miscalculated. Probably because he spent so much time gathering the eggshells.
“Mmm,” Kabru hummed, resting his chin against Laios' shoulder, “don't worry about it, honey. Take your time.” Laios glanced at him curiously from the corner of his eye. Maybe he wanted to watch? That was fine, then. Laios continued to scrub the pot, trying desperately not to get distracted by Kabru's presence, a goal that proved increasingly difficult over time.

Finally, he headed towards his bedroom, feeling his eyelids grow heavier with every step. It was only once he got really close that he realised something was off – and this time, it wasn't something that he could easily ignore. His bedroom door was open. He definitely didn't leave it like that. He always made sure to close it. He didn't enjoy the thought of anybody being in his room when he wasn't home. There were too many things in there that he didn't want anybody to see or touch without his permission. It would be fine if it was Falin, he supposed, since the two of them were used to sharing a living space and didn't really have many secrets they kept from each other (as far as he knew, at least), but Falin would probably ask him first, anyway. And she wouldn't leave the door open like that. Laios knitted his eyebrows. Come to think of it, wasn't it weird that the door was open at all? Even weirder was the fact the lights weren't on. Who would want to sit there in the dark, waiting for him to come home...? Laios' heart skipped a beat. There was only one answer he could think of, and he really hoped that it was true. With a shaking hand, he grabbed the doorknob.

It had become something of a tradition for the two of them to spend one December afternoon hanging around various stores in the city, admiring the Christmas decorations: bright, blinking lights hung from the ceiling or mounted on the walls, threatening to fall off at any moment like an intricate trap; fake snow piling on the floor; large plastic pine trees stood right in the middle of the department store, lavishly decorated with child-safe baubles made out of plastic and metal, surrounded by fake presents that contained nothing but solid blocks of styrofoam. All kinds of things wonderfully tacky and gaudy and so very wholesome. The children, who had not yet lost their sense of wonder, ran around pointing their fingers at the decorations, amazed by the bright, colourful sights, and even amongst adults, while many of them rushed past without looking at any of the displays, others would stop to admire them, at least for a moment, with a smile on their face.

Maybe he just wasn't good at writing letters to begin with. That was actually a distinct possibility. He was never much of a letter writer, unless one counted the occasional pieces of fanmail he'd sent to various magazines. He and Falin exchanged letters when they were apart, all throughout middle and high school and while he was in the army, but that was entirely her initiative. The bulk of the letters exchanged between them were written by her, and it seemed like she really enjoyed writing them. His letters were mostly meant as signals that he was still alive and well – relatively speaking. Between the two of them, it was Falin that maintained the habit, writing letters to their parents on a regular basis. Laios didn't have anybody to send letters to, and even if he did, he wouldn't have anything to write letters about. Maybe that was the problem? He didn't have anything to say that he couldn't tell Kabru directly? If only there was something… Or maybe it just felt silly to write a letter to somebody he saw almost every day. That didn't stop Kabru from writing him letters, though…

When Kabru stretched out his leg, his bare foot accidentally brushed against Laios’ ankle, immediately sending a shudder up his spine. Agh! He might as well have rubbed his skin with a block of ice! Laios squeezed his eyes shut and let out a whine as his body squirmed involuntarily. “W-wah! Your feet are so cold!”
Kabru let out an apologetic chuckle as he tilted his head back to be able to look at Laios’ face. “Really? I'm sorry, darling. I had no idea,” he hummed, regarding Laios from beneath lowered eyelids. One could almost believe that he did it on purpose, just to see his reaction. The next time he did it, it would definitely not be an accident. “Are you hurt?” he asked, clicking his tongue with concern as he cupped Laios’ cheek. Laios instinctively leaned into his touch.

Another yawn tore out of Kabru’s mouth, so sudden and violent that it felt as if his jaw was forcibly trying to dislocate itself. With tears forcing in the corners of his eyes, forced out by the yawn, he covered his mouth with his hand and lightly shook his head. He tiredly wiped his eyes with the back of his hand and turned towards Laios, who was seated on the edge of the bed, already wearing his pyjamas. He didn't seem to have noticed Kabru’s presence at all, too engrossed in flipping through the pages of his sketchbook. Kabru smiled subconsciously at the sight. The sketchbook was filled with Laios’ Pokémon designs. The two of them spent most of the day looking through the sketchbook, discussing the designs that were already there and brainstorming new ones.

Laios was adamant that while mermaids couldn't talk, they could sing. The inherent strangeness of this scenario seemed to escape his notice. Kabru was sure that if he'd brought it up, Laios wouldn't understand what he was confused about. That was just how things were. Mermaids sing so that they can lure people in, but they can't communicate using human speech – presumably that was the idea. Perhaps it would break the immersion if Kabru spoke to Laios with his own voice, even if he changed his pitch or tone. The allure of this scenario lay in the language barrier, the lack of familiarity. The mermaid song Laios taught him, on the other hand, didn't resemble any language Kabru was familiar with. Laios had memorised it, but he didn't seem to know what it meant, either. The source of this song was still a mystery to Kabru (yet another thing Laios just happened to know for a fact, he supposed), but he knew that it was a necessary part of the scenario.
