Irritator Challengeri
The irrigator challengeri, the smallest spinosaurid with an estimated size of 6-8 meters long. Compared to the Spinosaurus from the same family as it, it’s a nearly comical size difference. But, that didn’t make it any less incredible.
The spinosaurid family is divided into two sub families, spinosaurines and baryonychinae. Spinosaurines usually posses more highly retracted snares, straight widely spaced larger teeth with little to no serration. Also usually larger with higher sails. Baryonychinae however have larger less retracted snares, smaller numerous slightly curved teeth with slight serration. The star of the day, irritator, is indeed a spinosaurinae.
The history of its name, Irritator, comes from the English word ‘Irritation’. Where theres money to be made theres a black market, and the fossil market is no exception to this principle. And Irritator, the most intact spinosaurid skull we have ever discovered is definitely a target. Having been ‘creatively’ modified to sell for more. When paleontologists got the skull back at the time it was assumed to be the skull of a giant basal pterosaur. Due to the modifications made to the skull. Working around the modifications and figuring out what the Irritator looked like was quite a challenge that the paleontologists working on it got fed up with. Hence the name ‘Irritator’.
Aside from its name, it has another unique trait. Further analysis of its jaw leads us to believe it’s lower jaw could have opened laterally as described in the second image I’ve attached (credit to the artists I don’t know them) probably for swallowing larger prey whole.

Damn this is my second one of these micro-articles I’m calling it. Since schools nearly over, my goal for the summer is to write a bunch of these! Maybe 15? Or 30? I know myself well enough to know I’m not doing more than 20 so lol but I’ll try to write 15 by the end of the summer! As always (literally just last time and this time) I’m very happy to see feedback! Like a fact I got wrong or some cool other things on the Irritator. Next maybe I’ll do therizinosaurus Cheloniformis. Farewell ‘till next time!

CONCAVENATOR CORCOVATUS
Concavenator Corcovatus, translating from the Greek words Conca, aka Cuenca the area it would have inhabited in Spain close to the capital Madrid, venator (-hunter) and Corcovatus (-hunchback) roughly translating into “The hunchback hunter of Cuenca” named and described relatively new in 2010 with a nearly complete fossil from the Las Hoyas fossil site of the La Huérguina Formation.
What made it unique were the unique crest formations on its back. Unlike a Spinosaurus sail (or any other dinosaur with a sail) the vertebrae didn’t gradually ascend and descend and instead were two suddenly crests forming on its back. Possibly for thermo-regulation or a mating display or maybe even fat storage similar to camels, it was probably multi-functional as most of the time when animals have outward structures they serve more than a single purpose. One of my favorite depicted by a Mark Witton paleoart is that the hump structure helped them blend in with their environment or that it could have helped identification between individuals. It’s sort of a mystery, all we know is that it had two very tall vertabrae on its back.
But the crests on its back aren’t the only reason it’s cool (aside from the fact it’s a dinosaur making it automatically cool). On the fossil from 2010 the fore limbs had bumps which were possibly quill knob’s, meaning it possibly had feathers or could have at least been partially covered in feathers.

Anyways it’s my first time writing something like this and definitely my first time sharing it I’m kinda stressed it’s not good enough so TvT. Anyways if anyone wants to correct me or tell me more about the Concavenator please don’t feel free to do so I’d absolutely love to learn more about this incredible dinosaur.
