So today I was pretty bummed out by some bad news I won't go into detail here. To take my mind off of things, I started painting. And what better thing to paint on the birthday of one of my favorite literary characters than Hogwarts itself and the line that started the entire adventure? As a child, this series made me smile through the adventure and magic, and now as an adult I find that the nostalgia still can lift my spirits. So I had a handful of my seniors give me graduation invitations (as if I wouldn't already be there), which means I'm already building my collection of senior pictures! I decided that instead of buying cards, I'd make them myself with a combination of watercolors and hand lettering. So according to my Amazon history (I'm not the only one who checks their order history, right?), it was one year ago today that I placed an order for my first set of brush calligraphy pens, thinking I'd have a lovely way to sign my students' yearbooks as I said my goodbyes to them. Never imagined that I'd continue to practice and learn, eventually doing several lettering projects for my new school. So in honor of me doing calligraphy for a year, I re-lettered the first lettering verse I did in my sketchbook (the second photo is the old one, the third is the one I did today). Day 30: Seek His Presence Continually. I'm surprised how fast the month of April went, since we're only a few hours away from May (and as those in the academic field know, May is the fastest month of the year it seems). But with the end of April comes the end of this year's Bible Lettering challenge. It's been so much fun to creating different pieces of art (and dabbling with the digital medium!). Day 28: Never stop Praying. I think, like a lot of habits that are good for us, prayer is about long term benefits. Sure, there are times in which a prayer request is answered after Bible study prays over you, or when you whisper a quick prayer of peace during times of anxiety or stress (and don't think those prayers mean any less to the Lord); but I think it is important to remember that prayer, long term, is our time with the Lord. Day 27: be Kind to one another. So this one had me singing "O Holy Night" eight months early, because of the line "truly he taught us, to love one another" (and I'll admit, I'm still humming it). And again, this isn't a verse I can add anything to-- it really doesn't get any more straightforward than that. Alright, I did add something: super sketchy abstract lilacs. Why? Day 26: Faith is the Assurance of things Hoped for. I feel this is another way of of seeing the old adage "Faith is not knowing God can; Faith is knowing God will." And considering the state of society, it's becoming more and more difficult to be assured of anything or anyone (there's always a voice of doubt whispering "but what if..."). Day 25: Do not tire of doing Good. While I'll admit, I'm feeling the "tired" part of this, I think it's also important to note how easy it can be to "tire" of doing good, since doing good doesn't always yield rewards or even recognition. Day 24: My Peace I give to you. I feel like this piece could be titled "Erin couldn't help herself with needless flourishes and smudge flowers," but it's a good thing the verses are titles enough as they are. Day 23: the Lord is close to those who Call on Him. I don't know why, but I've been pondering this particular verse and the way it can be interpreted out of. That is to say, it isn't like the Lord is far from us when when we don't call on him (though it could be argued that we are the ones moving away in doing so), but the Lord is always right there waiting for us to turn and call on him. So perhaps the verse could be seen as "those who Call on the Lord feel how close he is." Day 22: If God is for us, who can be Against us? Not going to lie, I was humming this one quite a bit this afternoon as I was sketching this out. Day 20: Nothing will be Impossible with God. There are certainly some moments when this pops in my head more than others. Day 19: When you go through Deep Water, I will be with you. As someone who has spent a good deal of my life dedicated to the water, I've always been hyper-aware of the dangers of deep (or even not so deep) water. And as someone who has swam long distance in the ocean, the most terrifying aspect is not knowing where the bottom is, or even worse, knowing that it's too deep for you to ever fathom or hope to stand on. I think that's why I think I like this verse so much-- because when the water's deep, all you can do is put one arm in front of the other, kick, and trust that God will keep you afloat until you're on solid land again.
