As you’ve put this in the main tags, I hope you don’t mind me replying publicly.

Do people have a right to headcanon characters as trans, gay or of a certain race etc.? Yes, of course they do. And they have just as much right to draw characters in this way and display their work in the main tags, as long as they’re not shoving their headcanons onto others and declaring it undeniable canon. (I’ll admit, this is a problem I’ve seen in the fandom and it has to stop.)

There is never any mention in the PL games of what race the characters could be, and nor does there really need to be in a puzzle-solving mystery game. Your perception of race is based on appearance alone, and maybe the origins of the character’s name. Well, guess what? Most of the names differ with each regional version of game.

And what would be the most ‘iconic’ part of Layton’s design? His top hat? His orange shirt? His weird green shoes? It certainly would not be the colour of his skin. Also, Layton and Luke’s appearances aren’t even consistent... Have you seen them in Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney? When did Layton get so stretched-out?

Yes, it would be great if Level 5 could provide us with more POC characters... just a greater variety of main characters in general. They’ve definitely shown some improvement with Layton’s Mystery Journey, giving us characters like Emilianna (an Italian woman, with noticeably darker skin). This just proves how lacking the variety of main character designs there were in the original series. Every main female character with a voice actor who accompanies Layton practically looks the same: fair-skinned and petite. There’s nothing wrong with these features at all... but it does become a little repetitive.

So, in conclusion, who the heck cares if fans put their own spin on a classic character? (Comic book artists do it all the time with their characters!) No one’s forcing you to look at others’ work.

P.S. Hershel’s first name is Yiddish... which is a Jewish language. Just saying.

Alright y'all I'mma tell you about something that really peeves me. Alright so you know how people will headcanon characters as like trans or gay or a certain race and then will draw art showing their headcannon well I’m peeved when people do that with characters like ones from games with their race like it’s ok with book characters but game characters that have a set design it kinda annoys me because your messing with a iconic design I see the need for poc characters but do you really have to change the race of the main characters

Ernest’s infatuation...

I think we can all agree that Ernest’s crush on Kat could’ve been a little more... subdued. As adorable and as loyal as he can be, he doesn’t need to scream his feelings at the top of his lungs. Kat’s obviously noticed his infatuation and she even teases him about it. (’If only someone would give me a kiss...!’)

THAT BEING SAID, I can understand why Ernest would be so forward not only with his feelings, but with his friendships. LMJ ending spoilers under the cut...

I can’t wait until everyone’s finally played this game and I can live without fear of spoiling someone

Ernest... or rather, Miles Richmond lost everything before the age of what - twelve? His family lost their fortune and became ‘destitute’. His blank-slate of a mother died of some unnamed sickness. His father is never even mentioned, so we can assume Miles was left an orphan. He is the ‘sole surviving heir’ of the Richmond family, suggesting there were no other relatives he could turn to. Par for the course of PL orphans, Miles swore to get revenge on the Dragons.

Miles was lucky enough to get into Gressenheller University - with a scholarship from the Dark Jewel foundation (mentioned by Mayor Lowonida during the bonus episode Dark Jewel Generosity). Even if Miles didn’t have enough money for university, the scholarship could’ve covered the costs. Despite this bright spot, Ernest mentions during Case 10 that he always seems to encounter bad luck. He’s isn’t just referring to funny inconveniences like stepping in goat poop. His whole family seemed to be cursed.

On his first day as a fresher, he gets accused of stealing some research papers from his favourite tutor. Typical. We don’t see any family or friends come to the police station to bail him out. He is entirely alone. That is, until Katrielle walks in. Ernest is visibly attracted to her at first sight - blushing and at a loss for words. Fair enough. Kat is very pretty. Then, she helps clear his name, so you’d expect him to hold her in high rega - NOPE, IT’S LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT, MEANT TO BE, HE’D FOLLOW HER TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH.

This way of thinking isn’t good for Ernest or Kat... but I can definitely understand why he feels this way. This strange girl shows him the slightest bit of care, after he’s felt nothing but neglected and vengeful for so long. Of course he’s going to project his rush of love and admiration onto her. This isn’t sort of obsession isn’t healthy for Ernest or Kat, but thankfully, after everything’s sorted with the Dragons he seems to calm down a bit.

Before Kat considers dating anyone, I think she’ll need to sort out her family problems first. And I’m sure Ernest will be there to help, as she helped him.

The ‘first avian intelligence network’, you say...? Does Luke call it ‘Twitter’?

All of this is amazing and I’ll be sad if the old gang’s whereabouts isn’t explained like this.

If Professor Layton… really was presumed dead. It would either bring all his friends and family together, or drive them apart, giving a good reason for why there’s no mention of any of the old cast during LMJ. Luke and Emmy have gone off on their own to hunt down Layton’s suspected killer. Maybe they had a falling out with Flora about her staying in London where it’s safe and looking after her younger siblings. But Flora sets out on her own by the time Al and Kat reach their twenties.

Desmond assumes the worse, of course, and starts working on a Detragon Version 2. Because ‘dead and buried’ doesn’t always apply to the PL universe. Melina, Randall, Claire, Aurora and even Lady Dahlia (formerly the robot Lady Violet) could all attest to that.

Luke and Emmy have gone off on their own to hunt down Layton’s suspected killer. Maybe they had a falling out with Flora about her staying in London where it’s safe and looking after her younger siblings. But Flora sets out on her own by the time Al and Kat reach their twenties.
