The city’s favorite heroine and its most popular teenage heartthrob is the picture-perfect romance that’s dominating the magazine covers, but are they the couple of dreams, or a paid advertisement? And what does it mean for Paris if Ladybug can be bought? New evidence comes to light in -”

“Turn that off before you put a yo-yo through my TV, please.”

“I don’t understand why they keep lying about us! All these stupid rumors and… and accusations! It’s nonsense! We are not a publicity stunt!”

“I know that. It doesn’t matter what they say about us, so just ignore it. If you keep watching, you’re only going to get more worked up.”

Deep in her eyes, beneath the lies of the dark

Adrien, heir to one of the powerful corporations that controls their world, pursues a secret liaison with the infamous criminal Ladybug, contracting her to steal one of the Agreste's most tightly guarded assets - himself. A shop sign flickered dimly, half its segments burned out so that Adrien couldn’t guess at what it had originally said. The display in the window above was bright, barring some noticeable dead pixels, as it ran an Agreste ad. Water dripped at irregular intervals somewhere nearby, into a puddle that was continuously stamped out by footsteps before it could grow.

If Adrien was seen here, his father would be furious. He didn’t belong in a place like this, filled with the prosaic crowds and the buildings that held up only because they had nowhere to fall. His was a world of the well-maintained, of the clean and new. Of perfection, his father would say.

Fortunately, he wouldn’t be seen by anyone here.

Anyone, except Ladybug, that was.

It was different looking down on the city when it was with her. Maybe because these rooftops weren’t so remote that one couldn’t see the faces and the struggles of the people below. Maybe it was because she was a part of this world – she must be, with the ease she moved through it, with her knowledge of the paths above the streets – yet at the same time she could transgress into the world above. Slip in and out of it as she pleased, taking as much as she wished from the supposed unassailable.

Thief, saboteur, criminal. Ladybug was infamous above and below, unknown and untouchable. Adrien thought she was the most incredible person he’d ever met.

He didn’t know how she managed to hide them from prying eyes. It wasn’t the kind of technology his family, or anyone else in their circle, had, and it was hard to imagine anyone outside of their control having the resources to develop something like that. But all Ladybug would say was that she had the help of a little fox, which told him nothing.

But that was fine. Adrien had his secrets, too.

Her moments with Adrien were sweet and thrilling, and while she wouldn’t trade them for the world, Marinette sometimes did wish she could just drop the transformation. Let him know that his girlfriend was right there, so that they could have more than stolen moments. Have a serious relationship.

Not that she wasn’t serious about it right now!

But they had to hide it, and that wasn’t fair to either of them, even if Adrien said he didn’t mind.

Someday, when it was safe, things would be different. For now, Marinette could only fantasize about that day in idle moments.

Adrien has had to deal with far too many people trying (and sometimes succeeding) to grab his dæmon. But it's different with Marinette. Marinette stumbled backwards as Plagg padded too close, and Adrien rushed to catch her before she tumbled to the ground. It was the least he could do when she actually took care to avoid touching Plagg.

Even the most sacred of taboos seemed to go out the window when you were a celebrity, and Adrien had had far too many close calls with fans trying to “accidentally” brush up against his dæmon. Not to mention Chloé and Lila, who’d…succeeded. He shuddered at the memories; Chloé hadn’t even pretended those were accidents.

Marinette, despite her clumsiness, and landing on Adrien several times, had never come close to violating that taboo.

Plagg was usually more careful in keeping his distance, though. Those experiences hadn’t been any more pleasant for him. He even avoided most other dæmons, except Tikki.

So it was a surprise when he turned around and went right for Marinette again. Adrien caught him by the scruff.

“Plagg‽” Adrien said, too stunned by Plagg’s bold actions to finish the question.

“I’m tired of the two of you being all bashful and hesitant and annoying about each other,” he grumbled, trying to wriggle out of Adrien’s grip as Marinette made a choked noise. “This way will just get it over with.”

Adrien shared a wide-eyed look with Marinette.

“Don’t force them, Plagg,” Tikki said from Marinette’s shoulder. “It’s a big step.”

Adrien beamed up at his knight in shining armor – though she was no knight; technically, Ladybug was an “enemy of the kingdom” even though she did far more for the kingdom than his father ever would – as she unlocked the cage.

“Prince Adrien, I am beginning to think you are getting yourself into these situations on purpose just to see me.”

“I am not,” he said, though he might’ve considered it had such kidnappings been less regular, “but I cannot say I oppose that outcome.”

Marinette frantically tried to figure out how she had set loose over a dozen demons. The candles were placed correctly. Maybe she had mispronounced the spell?

“No need to be afraid,” the red and black one said. “We’re grateful you freed us, Marinette!”

“Huh? But we’re bound to her?”

“Shh!”

“Don’t tell her that!”

“Now she knows she can control us!”

Marinette stumbled over herself in a panic. “You’re mistaken, there’s no way a novice mage like me could bind even one demon, let alone all of you!” Even the most powerful mages couldn’t manage that!

The demons were unconvinced.

Adrien pulled the hood lower on his face as he slipped in with the crowds. Father didn’t approve of Adrien going anywhere, but a circus would be even lower on that list.

He watched the show with delight, but one performer captured his attention like no other. Dressed in dazzling red and the deepest black, and a mask to match, she flew around that tent, leaping fearlessly from trapezes. Adrien gasped with the crowd as she somersaulted through rings of fire, not a single hair on her pigtails singed.

She looked at him and smiled, and Adrien fell in love.

A cat, who was apparently Chat Noir under some strange spontaneous effect of his Miraculous. She would have to ask Tikki if that was something she’d need to worry about, too, but Marinette was in costume at the moment.

“Yes,” Plagg said, “I’m sure.”

“What do I do to fix it?”

Plagg shrugged. “You’re the Guardian.”

Helpful.

Well, Marinette thought, there was always the tried-and-true curse-breaking method. So she leaned down to give him a kiss, making sure to keep her eyes closed tight.

“...Unless you want to make a competition of it?” Marinette said, a teasing glint in her eyes and a large bowl and spoon in her hands.

“That wouldn’t be fair, my Lady,” Adrien said, grinning back at her. “You’ve been baking cookies since you could walk. I’d certainly lose.”

“That doesn’t stop you when it comes to video games.”

“That’s different,” he said. “I’ve been playing video games as long as you have; when I lose, it’s a fair loss.”

“I see,” she said, and set the bowl in front of him, “then I guess we go back to the original plan, and I tell you what to do.”

“Maybe I like it when you tell me what to do,” he said, leaning forward. Marinette pushed him back by the nose in a well-practiced motion.

“Later, kitty, or we’ll never get these cookies made,” she said, but couldn’t hide her amusement. “But you know I like to hear that. You can start by getting the dry ingredients together, while I work on the rest.”

They each set to their tasks. Marinette couldn’t help but keep looking over at her partner, unable to hold back her smile as she watched him.

Bring the Light In

Marinette is a struggling small-time private investigator, when Adrien Agreste walks in, bringing trouble - and not just for her heart - with him. Written for Fandom Empire Monopoly 2024 - Prompt: "Crime/Thriller" and Gen Prompt Bingo - Prompt: "Film Noir"

The light that filtered into the room was dim and dull. Despite how much Marinette had scrubbed that single window, it never seemed to wash away the years of grime that blocked out the sunlight that she wished for, and on overcast days like this, it was particularly miserable.

But she couldn’t afford anything better. She could barely afford this cramped, dark office as it was. Perhaps she could try supplementing her income with sewing and mending again, but she would need more light...

A knock at the door interrupted her ruminations.

“Come in,” she said, frantically shoving all the junk that had accumulated on her desk to the side. Some of it clattered to the floor, and she winced.

The door opened hesitantly, letting a little more illumination into the room. A young man stood there, vaguely familiar to Marinette, but not enough to recall him.

Hopefully he wasn’t trouble that she’d forgotten.

“Hello?” he said uncertainly, “I’m looking for Detective Dupain?”

Marinette leaned back in her chair, trying to fake a casual air. “You’re looking at her.”

To the man’s credit, he didn’t give her the usual response – laughter, often, or sometimes anger for wasting their time with “jokes”.

“Oh, good,” he said, after the briefest flash of surprise, and stepped into the room. He closed the door again, returning the room to its usual dim state. Though perhaps the clouds outside had shifted somewhat – it seemed lighter than before. “I need your help.”

Adrien felt like he could barely breathe, and his eyes were watering as he fended off another wave of birds. He really needed a shirt that said “Personally Victimized by M. Pigeon”.

Maybe if he asked Marinette nicely, she’d make him one.

Or maybe a handkerchief would be better, he thought as he sneezed violently.

But for now, he was preoccupied with keeping his airways clear, and taking down the source of the onslaught. Usually this superhero business was the highlight of his day, but today it was just miserable.

At least the Chat Noir meme pages would be thriving.
