Asexual spectrum protagonists in science fiction and fantasy books!
If you’re looking for ace or aro fiction, I highly suggest checking out Claudie Arseneault’s awesome database. Link is here.
A lot of the time people act like there’s no ace fiction, but that’s not true! A lot of these books are by ace-spec authors as well. We’re out here writing the stories we want to see ourselves in. :)

I’m not transcribing all the text, but you can find the titles, authors, information on TW, etc beneath the cut.
When possible, I’m linking to my database of queer books. The page for each book includes the synopsis, content warnings under spoiler tags, and links to reviews from queer readers. If it’s not in the queer database at the time of posting (8/18/19), I’ll link to Goodreads instead.

Author: Katherine Arden
Pages: 312
Copyright: 2017
Summary: In medieval Russia, Vasya constantly gets into trouble because of her ability to see the spirits that dwell around her. She gives them offerings and they teach her their secrets. When her father takes a new wife, who can also see the spirits, Vasya’s world is thrown into chaos. As her stepmother and the town priest wage war against belief in the spirits, something ancient and evil begins to stir in the woods.

I give “The Bear and the Nightingale” a 4.5/5 stars.
Pros: I adored this book! I need more stories based in Russian folklore and mythology on my shelves. Arden did an amazing job of creating the atmosphere of a Russian winter and the dangers it poses. Her dialogue for Vasya and Morozko’s interactions was witty and sharp.
Cons: The first 80 pages dragged a bit, mostly due to setting things up for the sequels. But once everything was in place, the pace ramped up. I’m sure I’ll like this part better after reading the two sequels; “The Girl in the Tower” and “The Winter of the Witch”, but it makes the book drag during a first read.
Closing: I read a few reviews of this book before deciding to pick up a copy, and what made me eager to read “The Bear and the Nightingale” was one reviewer saying it was similar to Naomi Novik’s “Uprooted”. Having now read the former, I can say that is a perfect comparison! So, if you liked “Uprooted”, give “The Bear and the Nightingale” a read. If you like Russian mythology and folklore, give this a read. Or if you’re just curious, check this book out.
