"... I know you aren't, Ma Dai." She sighed out, looking down. "However, as you said, nothing can change what you've done. What your family has done... However, I suppose the sentiments are appreciated."
Tumblr media
"But what's done is done. We must live with what we've done, and... for you, it's this deed, and for me... it's the sins I've committed as well. However all of this... deters away from what we originally started talking about, hasn't it?"
“L -Look, I’m not proud of what we did—what I did.”
Tumblr media
“And nothing can change what I’ve done to you. I don’t know if you’ll ever believe me when I say I’m sorry, but I am. Truly. With all that I am, I’m sorry. If I could bring her back—if I could bring them all back, I would.”

"You had no idea, so I don't see why you're apologizing for asking a question. It was... my mistake anyway. I was the one to mention her, and I suppose as they say- curiosity killed the cat." She paused, before adding, "She probably would've liked you, Ma Dai."
Tumblr media
“I, uh… I see.” Ahem. “I’m… Sorry to hear that.”

"... Ah', well, my... daughter. She was afraid of thunder. She would come to me shaking, and whimpering when a thunderstorm would hit us. That's why I was... able to figure out that you were scared of thunder. At least that's what I'm assuming, anyway."
“I -I’m not trying to fool anyone! I’m fine!—”
Tumblr media
“…She? What do you mean?”

"Oh, please. I know that look, and that body language, Ma Dai."
Tumblr media
"You can't fool me. It's okay to be afraid of a little thunder~ Though I can't say that you're the first I've met who's afraid of it, but your symptoms do remind me of how she acted when faced with it."
“No it—it is not, I assure you! That is the last thing it is doing, a -ahahahaa!”
Tumblr media
“Nope. Nothing wrong. At all.”

"Surely you must be jesting. You're practically quivering, Ma Dai."

"You're normally not like this when we're together, so I know it's not something I did... is the weather perhaps getting under your skin?"
“Nope. Nothing.”

Why didn't she? Ugh, that was a question she was asking herself- why was she even being this nice to him of all people? Perhaps she did care... No, no she didn't. "I prefer to keep true to my word as opposed to letting it go so easily." She spat out, frowning at him. He was already messing with her head, and she just wanted to ignore it.
Tumblr media
"Am I then? Please, clarify to me what you meant then." Wang Yi already felt herself growing frustrated with his words. Ma Dai was... a questionable man all around. He was loyal to perhaps a fault, and he was constantly optimistic... But she knew a lot more was behind that mask he put up to others. His words though, were always a riddle that she didn't exactly like to solve. "Before I get anymore annoyed."
“Then why didn’t you?” He muttered in response, head turning to glance over his shoulder at her. Was that a warning from her? Was she foreshadowing his imminent doom? Why was she hesitating? It was so illogical; if she wanted him dead, then why didn’t she strike him? Wang Yi was swift and perceptive, there had to be something holding her back. Perhaps it was merely the bargain they had made.
Tumblr media
“You were the one who said it, not me.” Ma Dai retorted, brow rising in mild interest, “I asked why you would want to admit to something that wasn’t true, though I think you’re misunderstanding me now.” He himself wasn’t confused, but the way it was beginning to shift might have angered her. While Ma Chao might have liked to draw that ire, Ma Dai personally didn’t want to push her beyond any borders she was already close to crossing.

"Why are you even asking me these questions?" She sighed out, leering at the happy-go-lucky officer. Honestly, was he trying to just get on her nerves now? Ugh, how she wanted to wipe that smarmy little grin off of his face... Wang Yi frowned at the sight of his back.
Tumblr media
"Well for one, you won't get me to admit things," she grunted, "and if you wanted me to admit to them, you'd be prying more." The Wei woman placed her hand onto his arm, and tugged at him. "And perhaps you'd actually look at me instead of putting your back to me. I could've easily killed you if I wanted to." She hissed out.
“Why would you ever admit something you never truly felt for?” He asked, brow rising in curiosity as he closed the gap between them, though just as he neared her, Ma Dai turned away and exposed his back to the blood thirsty battle maiden.
Tumblr media
“Furthermore, how could I ever get you to admit such a thing?” The artist prompted, “and why would you want to?”

"Caring?" She scoffed at the idea of that. She didn't care for him, not in the least, but... Wang Yi rolled her eyes at his grin. Of course he would be cheeky and find amusement out of their banter. In all honesty she wanted to smack it away, but she merely frowned instead.
Tumblr media
"Oh, please." She crossed her arms, and stayed put despite his closer movements. "Must you spew out such words to me? Or is this just another way to try and get me to admit things that I truly do not feel?"
“That sounds like caring to me, my lady.” He responded simply, shooting her a side-long glance as his grin broadened. He almost took her scolding as a challenge, it seemed. Logically her argument made little sense—or at least it did within his own mind, at least. Wouldn’t it be the best point in time to strike him now? Now that he was so full of pride? Would that not bring her the most satisfaction?
Tumblr media
“Better a witty fool than a foolish wit,” he replied, insinuating that she was the wit to his fool. From this, his grin only broadened as he took a bold step forward and folded his arms behind his back.

"I suppose you could call it mercy." She sighed out, rubbing at the side of her face. "However I have no care for your happiness, Ma Dai. I suppose I just... don't want to take an opportunity at striking you down when you finally seem happy for a true moment. It just reminds me of... Whatever, anyway wipe that horrid smile off your face. You look like a fool."
“Mercy, is it? The gods are clearly smiling upon me. I never thought I would see the day that you cared for my happiness, my lady. You never cease to surprise me.”
