A very Short Guide to Solving Crashes in Sims 4

The amount of people asking for help with game crashes and bugs has been growing steadily. I am lucky to have a few friends that are tech savvy and mod the game to be directed successfully to avoid these headaches most of the time.

First, if you do not have better exceptions installed in your game, I strongly recommended it is a time and game saver, usually directing you to the culprit or at least giving you an idea of where the trouble is.  The most common crashes: Build Buy, Moving Sims in into a new Lot and CAS, which has been the latest addition to random crashes.

Crashes during the Build Buy Session. Usually, these occur when you are placing items that got corrupted or with outdated Tuning or which slots were configured wrong. The solution to this is to save frequently, so that when the crash occurs you do not loose hours of work and you basically know which items you placed last. This way it is a lot easier to find the culprit specially if you play with a lot of CC.

Crashes while Placing A Family or moving a Family to a Lot. There are a few reasons why these happen: First, the sims that you are trying to place have outdated Aspirations or traits, so update those, or remove them and test. Second, you used bb.move objects on cheat and packed the rooms full, sometimes blocking where the sims need to interact with something. Also, when you use ladders give them plenty of room for the sims to reach them. Check your placement of objects without the move objects cheat and try again.

Crashes while in CAS. Usually those where due to LAst UI exceptions, which meant that a mod you use like: More Columns In CAS or All Traits in CAS, etc. are outdated, need to update them. Another problem for crashes in CAS and that sometimes will give you a Last UI Exception, but has nothing to do with CAS mods like the ones I mentioned above is presets, makeup and other CAS CC you do not own, but the original creator of the Sim in CAS used. These are usually easier to spot, since the game is going to mark as using an item in a category and when you open it, there is no green box around it or you can’t find the item, the same for clothes and skin details. With presets it is trickier: If you see that the sliders lag or if you try to give your Sims another preset, but it retains aspects of the other one, it is a problem with a preset used. Also, if you try to remove a certain Skin detail manually and it doesn’t is almost certain your game will crash upon a save. I have found that if I start seeing these signs earlier on I remove all items in a certain category and save the sim, then if I don’t get a crash, I close the game and delete all the cashes and restart the game and that should solve your problem.

As a last hint: Always delete all cashes when updating mods, removing items from the library or adding new items or CC. Best of luck and I hope these are helpful to some.
