a writing competition i was going to participate in again this year has announced that they now allow AI generated content to be submitted

their reasoning being that "we couldn't ban it even if we wanted to, every writer already uses it anyway"

tonight was the first night of the romance writing class I signed up for! it’s a small group, eight of us plus the facilitator.

I definitely now get what the facilitator told me in the intake call about it maaaaybe not being the best class for me: it’s clearly for people who are a lot earlier in the writing process and don’t have a story or characters fully developed, and one of the revision-specific courses might be better (but they’re not being offered right now) but I think it will be fun anyway! I hope so, anyway. the vibes were good for this first session, I liked it.

and it’s only six weeks so even if it sucks, it’s only six weeks. even if it won’t help me develop any new ideas or characters, I’m still hoping for some general writing inspiration.

the most recent AO3 AI bot data stealing thing (I know it’s a scrape but I hate that word for some reason) just depresses the hell out of me. I don’t want to lock all my works, I want them to be publicly available for anyone who wants to read them.

but I also don’t want smug losers stealing my work and saying that it was fine to do and that people are wrong to complain. I fucking hate them. and I hate that so many people support them.

it just makes me so sad right now.

I do think Rami was the best thing about The Amateur. I liked it, but it was also quite slow and very heavy on the “dead wife flashbacks” trope (I’m cautious of spoilers but that is the entire premise of the film so I feel comfortable saying that much).

it won’t be everyone’s thing, for various reasons. whatever your thoughts are on the trailer, that’s what you get from the movie, so if it already doesn’t seem like your thing, it won’t be. it was better than I thought it would be when I first heard about it, but I’ll probably also forget about it pretty soon.

and Jon Bernthal is criminally underused.

I’m in the writing course! it honestly doesn’t sound like it’s exactly what I thought or that it’s a perfect fit (the instructor said she thought I’d be better suited for a class specifically on revising drafts, but it’s not being offered right now) but I decided that at the very least it should be fun. I can always learn something even if it’s not what I expected. it starts at the end of April ☺️

also, I am still not writing, but! I do have an idea, so I’m currently working on roughly outlining that before I try to narrow it down and iron out the details.

I went to the cinemas twice this weekend, and they played the trailer for The Amateur in front of both movies.

on a purely shallow level, Rami actually looks so good in the trailer it’s insane. what a babe.

I decided to sign up for that local writing course. or try, anyway. they’re really insistent on everyone being the ~right fit~ so before you can sign up for any of their courses, you have to have an intake call with one of the instructors. mine was supposed to be today!

except they gave me a 3.5 hour window of when they were going to call, did not call, and then emailed to say the afternoon “got away” from them and could I be free to talk in 10 days instead. sigh. so part of me REALLY wants to say “nah actually I’m good” but now I feel like I’m too deep in it.
