Do you German learners wanna learn something fun? :) dooo yoouuu??
The words "umfahren" and "umfahren" mean opposite things :) one means "to drive around something" and the other means "to drive into someone"
And "umschreiben" and "umschreiben" also mean different things :) one means "to describe" and the other means "to rewrite"
Also, "der Weizen" und "das Weizen" are two very different things (wheat vs. beer), just like "das Korn" and "der Korn" (grain vs. schnaps) :D

So I picked up this cool looking book in a small bookstore in Barcelona. And I was like “wow this’ll be great to help me learn Spanish”. I opened it when I got back to my hostel and it’s actually in Catalan! So I guess now I have a reason to learn that.

I had my first dream in Mandarin! It was a workplace situation, and everyone spoke Mandarin with each other and English with me, except some basic phrases. I only remember saying 对不起 to my boss.
It's weird because I had Russian class yesterday evening, so my brain was switched to Russian. I did dream in Russian a couple of weeks ago.

Tricky words that differ between 普通话 and 国语
Usually tone and other small pronunciation differences between 普通话 and 国语 don’t phase me much. In context I don’t even notice 期望 qīwàng vs. qíwàng. But recently I stumbled across 颤巍巍 and realized that it’s a lot harder when both/all syllables in a word are pronounced differently!
Here are 8 words (including 颤巍巍) that sound pretty different in 普通话 and 国语 (definitely not exhaustive).
Format: 简体(繁体)普通话读音 | 国语读音 Simp. (Trad.) Putonghua pron. | Guoyu pron.
【1】 颤巍巍(顫巍巍)chànwēiwēi | zhànwéiwéi - trembling / swaying / flickering / tottering / faltering
【2】 血液* xuèyè | xiěyì - blood
【3】 差劲(差勁)chàjìn | chājìng - bad / no good / below average / disappointing
【4】 熟识(熟識)shúshi or shúshí | shóushì- to be well acquainted with / to know well
【5】 血迹*(血跡)xuèjì | xiějī - bloodstain
【6】 垃圾 lājī | lèsè - trash / refuse / garbage / of poor quality (this is probably the most well known difference!)
【7】 倏地 shūde | shùdì - swiftly / suddenly
【8】 惋惜 wǎnxī | wànxí - to regret / to feel that it is a great pity / to feel sorry for sb
Definitions are from MDBG.
*The pronunciation of 血 is all over the place. You can hear xuè, xuě, or xiě. I’m generalizing here, but I actually tend to say xuě.
Under the cut you can see some bonus words that I found (I didn’t include them since I have not seen/learned them).
【9】 夹击(夾擊)jiājī | jiájí - pincer attack / attack from two or more sides / converging attack / attack on a flank / fork in chess, with one piece making two attacks
【10】 突击(突擊)tūjī | tújí - sudden and violent attack / assault / fig. rushed job / concentrated effort to finish a job quickly
【11】 削发(削髮)xuēfà | xuèfǎ - to shave one's head / fig. to become a monk or nun / to take the tonsure
【12】 综括(綜括)zōngkuò | zòngguā - to summarize / to sum up
【13】 敛迹(斂跡)liǎnjì | liànjī- to refrain / to give up evil (temporarily) / to cover one's traces / to lie low / to retire (from view)
【14】 档期(檔期)dàngqī | dǎngqí - slot within a schedule / timeslot (for a TV program, a session with a photographer etc) / range of dates in which an event is to be held (film screening, exhibition etc)
【15】 质朴(質樸)zhìpǔ | zhípú - simple / plain / unadorned / unaffected / unsophisticated / rustic / earthy
【16】 血泊 xuèpō | xiěbó - pool of blood
【17】 稍息 shàoxī | shāoxí - (military) Stand at ease!

I’m at this training with a girl who grew up in Brazil. And I’ve wanted to learn Brazilian Portuguese but I have trouble retaining languages. So all I’ve known is a couple basic words or ones I’ve heard in songs a lot. So we were talking and she mentioned home and I was like “oh yeah, bom dia.” And she got really excited and asked if I spoke any Portuguese and I said that I’ve been trying to learn but had trouble. So I told her the bit that I knew and she taught me a bit. And we made the goal that by the end of this month of training that I would be able to speak with her at least basic conversations in Portuguese. So I’m excited and hoping that actually happens. (She also complimented my pronunciation)

My Reasonings for the Languages I Want to Learn
*I would like to preface this by saying that some of these reasons are embarrassing and really have no weight to them besides making me interested in the language*
French and Moroccan Arabic
My best friend and her mom speak them. And her mom doesn’t speak much English
Literally no other reason, I hated French when I first tried to learn it in Middle School
German
My motivation used to be because I had family who lived in Germany. But after they moved I lost that motivation
I started reading Blue Lock and got to the German part and it’s made me want to learn again
Korean
Kdramas - I’m obsessed with them and would love to be able to watch them without needing subtitles one day
Brazilian Portuguese
Haikyuu Time Skip - that’s it, that’s all I needed. Hinata going to Brazil and speaking Portuguese has made me want to do it. This anime has also made me start playing volleyball
It was the only reason until I made a friend who speaks it
Lithuanian
I’m part Lithuanian and I would love to reconnect with that culture
Spanish
My motivation used to be that I worked in a kitchen where Spanish was frequently spoken but after I stopped working there I lost that
I’m thinking of starting Telenovelas to restart that motivation
———
There are also a couple I’ve been debating on trying to learn as well
Cantonese
I just really loved Crazy Rich Asians (the book and the movie)
Hindi
I started watching Bollywood movies
So I can hear if customers are shit talking me during work

Moroccan Arabic pt. 4
Number
Moroccan Arabic has three numbers: singular, dual and plural.
The dual is used with units of measurement, quantity and time. It’s made by adding “ən” to masculine nouns, adjectives and participles, and “tən” to feminine ones.
šahr - month
šahrən - two months
sana - year
sanatən - two years
Making plurals is more complex. In order to explain the types of plural, we’ll asign numbers to each consonant in a word. For instance, in the word “ktab” (book), /k/ is consonant number 1, /t/ is number 2, and /b/ is number 3.
Masculine plural
These are the most common ways to make the masculine plural:
Type a) [1][2]a[3] > [1][2]o[3]a
dkar - man, male
dkora - men, males
ktab - book
ktoba - books
Type b) mo____ > mo____in
mo’alləm - teacher
mo’alləmin - teachers
momattil - actor
momattilin - actors
Type c) [1]vowel[2][3] > [1][2]o[3]
qalb - heart
qlob - hearts
dars - lesson
dros - lessons
Type d) [1]vowel[2][3]vowel[4] > [1][2]a[3]ə[4]
məftaḥ - key
mfatəḥ - keys
kabboṭ - coat
kbabəṭ - coats
I’ll explain the rest of the types in the next post!
