If you‘re a Cymraeg speaker/ learner, can you please recommend me some learning resources. I‘ve been using the Quick Start course on Transparent Languages (free with a library card – check it out!) but I‘m coming to the end of it and there’s no Upper Beginners or owt like that as far as I can see. Basically if you know of anything free that isn’t Duolingo or completely ruined by AI, please let me know! Diolch ♡

Like look at that. This is the gay sex of writing.

Spanish idiom of the day: "de Herodes a Pilato", from Herod to Pilate. Referencing the passion of Christ as related in the Gospels, where Jesus is sent back and forth between different magistrates. Commonly used to describe similar situations of being pushed around from person to person and place to place, specifically when dealing with customer or public services.

How To Romanticise Language Learning
TL = Target Language
Buy a new folder, highlighters and journal all in a specific colour for your TL
Find a drama/series to fall in love with
Create music playlists for different moods (e.g. aggressive rap/upbeat pop/sad songs/old classics)
Cook a traditional meal from the country of your TL
Make a summary sheet of some big historical event that shaped the country of your TL
Learn about the traditional dress (and colour significance) from your TL country
Compose a song in your TL
Research into famous art from your TL country (e.g. Japanese Irezumi) and try to recreate it in a sketchbook
Find a classic tale written in your TL (e.g. War and Peace in Russian)
Make an aesthetic Pinterest board that summarises your TL
Research into classic architecture built in your TL country
Designate a special area to study your TL (and make that area minimalist/pretty)
Make an aesthetic Pinterest board about travelling to your TL country
Write a poem in your TL
Write a short story in your TL
Keep a diary in your TL
Find a favourite YouTube channel in your TL
Write up a list of reasons why you're learning this TL and pin it up on the wall (read whenever you need motivation!)

Hi! I want to start independently learning a new language (alongside Castilian Spanish and German - which I study for my degree) but every day I change my mind on which one. So, I’ve decided to leave it up to the good people of tumblr.com. Find my propaganda for each language below the poll. Alternatively, recommend me a completely different language in the notes and make my decision even harder.
Propaganda for Scottish Gaelic:
♡ I have Scottish ancestry and family and friends who live in Scotland (some in Gàidhlig-speaking areas).
♡ I hope to study my master’s degree in Scotland.
♡ I have always wanted to learn a Celtic language and understand more about what came before English colonisation.
♡ The grammar and orthography look complex and fun.
♡ I care deeply about language conservation and this language is listed as “definitely endangered” by UNESCO.
Propaganda for Greek:
♡ I studied Classics for two years in college and believe it’s very important to have a working understanding of the modern culture when learning about a country’s history - as a matter of respect.
♡ I go Greece semi-regularly (maybe every four years or so) and it’s my favourite country to visit.
♡ I already know some of the basics.
♡ It’s an opportunity to learn a new writing system - and it doesn’t seem too difficult when compared with other writing systems like Cyrillic or Kanji.
♡ There are definitely the most resources available for this out of the three.
Propaganda for Hawaiian:
♡ (Note: I cannot find anything which lists the Hawaiian language as a closed practice but if it is, please let me know!)
♡ This is a “critically endangered” language - even more vulnerable than Scottish Gaelic.
♡ I’m very intrigued by its use of apostrophes and accents.
♡ I watched a documentary during a linguistics class on Hawaiian Pidgin and found myself captivated by the words which originated in Hawaiian.
♡ I would love to visit Hawai’i one day and want to show more respect to the people and their culture than many tourists seem to do.
♡ I have already found several resources to start my hypothetical Hawaiian learning journey (beyond Duolingo - which I refuse to use until it starts recognising the value of human translators).
☆ Note: this is my “fun” language, I do not care about “practicality” or number of speakers. I believe that all languages are incredible and should be learned. ☆

I'm gonna reblog with some videos of people speaking various American Indian/indigenous American languages, because I think most people don't even know what they sound like. Not to be judgement of that—just, you know, I think people who want to be informed should know what they sound like!

Duolingo Alternatives by Language
Disclaimer: I haven't used or tested all of them. All resources have different strengths, e.g. Drops being designed for vocabulary. They often aren't full alternatives for Duolingo or formal classes. I just wanted to compile resources for all languages on Duolingo to make the switch easier, especially for the less popular languages.
Feel free to also check out my collection of free textbooks
If you want a more detailed resource list for any of these languages (or perhaps one not listed here) you can send me an ask and I can see what I can do.

my friend and i were going to study a language together and wound up having to cancel our plans due to scheduling pressures, but! through research we came across a really cool resource for reading in a TON of languages: bloom library!
as you can see, it has a lot of books for languages that are usually a bit harder to find materials for—we were going to use it for kyrgyz, for example, which has over 1000 books, which was really hard to find textbook materials for otherwise. as you can see it also has books with audio options, which would be really useful for pronunciation checking. as far as i can tell, everything on the site is free as well.
