speaking of microexpressions that contain multitudes, is there any scene in mysterious lotus casebook that more effectively illustrates how differently li lianhua and fang duobing both nevertheless manage to convey profound love and grief with each other?

(apologies for the clumsy editing in the last screenshot, i just could not grab a screencap of this moment with the subtitle that worked for me. so i stole the caption from a split second before this moment and slapped it onto this one.)

i think what makes chengyi's delivery so devastatingly impactful here is his gentleness, which works because while i'd never describe li lianhua's verbal interactions with fang duobing as rough or callous, he tends to try to protect or spare his feelings through obfuscation and avoidance where possible (i will come back to this subject later, i have Thoughts). understandably, that isn't an option here because he has run out the clock and is out of time, and he has no cards left to play except the one that will hurt the most: the truth, which no amount of tenderness can blunt. because the truth is that he's going to die, has actively been dying, and there is (in his opinion) nothing fang duobing can do to stop it.

try asking fang duobing to accept that tho. lol. lmao even.

Mysterious Lotus Romance Tropes?

(Sssh, nobody tell the censors.) The amazing thing is, these are just some of the tropes I could have included. (And just one example, because Fang Duobing does these things a lot.) There are many, many more.

Feeding loved one? Check. Constantly asking how they are? Check. Giving loved one medicine? Check. Being forced to watch as loved one is abducted? Check. Panicking because they think loved one might be dead? Check. Frantically searching loved one for injuries? Check. Getting jealous (because of attention from possible romantic interests)? Check. Family teasing the main characters about their relationship? Check. Shielding loved one from (possible) harm? Check.

There are so many! (In fact, if anyone wants to suggest scenes from other shows (preferably with the episode number) for the above scenarios so I can make a part 2, please do!)

Fang Duobing isn't the most tragic character in Mysterious Lotus Casebook, obviously, however he sure is still tragic. Like, his childhood and his father and everything is bad enough, but then you have the entirety of MLC basically being:

"I've found a true friend whom I'll be travelling the world with forever!" "Wait, no, scratch that. I've been drugged and abandoned in a field by said friend." "Okay, now we're true friends and we'll be travelling the world solving cases together." "Whoops, no, drugged and abandoned again." "I swear, this time we'll be true friends and..." "Fuck, he just told me he just pretended to be my friend and that he actually thinks I'm useless. He got me locked up by my family and everything." "We're back on that true friends stuff now and..." "Damn. He's been lying to me all this time about some huge and life changing things." "So, I saved him and chose him over my lifelong dream even though he's a wanted criminal and might have killed my father. Soulmate shit is back on!" "Unfortunately, soulmate has actually been dying all this time. Fuck." "No problem, his old master cured him! Time for lifelong travel together! Everything is fine!" "He lied again. Still dying." "We found the flower that will save him! Justice prevails!" "You'll never guess what happened next..."

And that's just some of the bombshells he has to deal with throughout the show and it's just the Li Lianhua related stuff. Poor boy had his dreams crushed A LOT.
