Her fingers are blackened at the tips, dark veins spiderwebbing up her forearms where the magic had coursed red hot through her bloodstream. The skin on her neck was tight, several spots having petrified in crystal from overuse of a magic she relied on perhaps a bit too much. But she had to, right? All this power and yet she had let her home fall to the occupation, let people die and stain the earth red with their life force. She had to use everything in her arsenal now. If not to free her home from Niflheim, then to atone for her past lack of action. Scorched fingertips, tingling nerves, and scarred skin was nothing compared to what her people suffered back home.
She wondered if the river - the pride of Galahd - still ran clear anymore. Wondered if those reefs she used to hunt in had been crushed by warships docking on the white beaches she loved. Wondered the jungles still teemed with wildlife and flora or if it had been cut and burnt away.
The smell of antiseptic burned her nostrils. It’s not a new scent, one she’s endured many a time evident by the various scars across her body or the times she sat to have her vitals checked when she had really overdone it with magic usage. But today was not her visit, no. She leaned against the wall outside of the wing, gaze drifted off to nothing in particular and fingers mindlessly playing with the end of her braid as her mind ran through ailing thoughts that all merged into one another. The sound of gunshots ringing in her ears, mental maps of the battlefield flashing through her mind, the heat of fire and sting of blades. Millicent never thought she’d see war. She had always thought that she’d follow her parents and go into jewelry; weave metal and leather into intricate twists and carve down beautiful minerals gifted to them by the very land they loved. But fate - no, it hadn’t been fate - Niflheim had other plans. And Millicent found herself enlisted into the king’s personal army alongside any other refugee that had the capacity to wield magic.
And now she stood outside the glaive HQ medical wing awaiting the release of another within.
The scuffing of heavy duty boots and hint of black in her peripheral immediately pulled the woman back down to Eos, head lifting from its downward tilt to find the very woman she was expecting: Crowe Altius. She’d been left in bad shape after the recent battle - all the mages had. It was because of them that the glaives had ultimately won the battle, but at the cost of several of their women. Crowe herself looked disheveled - understandable given her two day stay at the wing - but overall seemed mostly patched up and in one piece. Millicent immediately pushed off the wall and hurried over to the other woman, an excited and relieved smile quickly pulling her lips up “Crowe! Are you alright? How are you feeling?” A redundant question, she wouldn’t have been discharged if she hadn’t been okay. But even healing through magical and medical means still left aches and exhaustion.

❛ i can’t leave you alone for one minute, can i? ❜ - from luche
@nightiingaled || 200 random dialogue prompts
-
The sounds of war surround her; the pop gunfire, the roar of beasts, the deafening ‘boom’ of occasional explosions. But it’s not a new soundscape to Millicent, no. This is a familiar environment to her after many years. It’s one that no one should ever grow used to, but she has none the less.
The woman slams her hand against the chest of a magitek that swipes at her, the android convulsing as crustal points explode out from it’s inner workings, the red LED’s of it’s eyes flickering before Millicent shoves it away from her, electricity crackling over the metallic corpse before it explodes. She barely has a moment to breathe before a bullet whizzes past her cheek, barely missing grazing her skin. She pivots on her toes, throwing her dagger back towards the offending infantryman - the blade lodging deep into his chest. Magic pulls her towards the weapon in a blink, driving it deeper into the man’s chest when her hand finds grip on the handle. She uses the momentum to spin both of them around and just barely making it in time to use the enemy as a human shield against yet another opposing soldier who fires at her. She’s starting to get overwhelmed. Every time she manages to take down one troop, two more seem to take their place - like a hydra who keeps growing new heads every time one is cut off. With one of her squadmates dead, two others injured and falling back for medical attention in a safer area, and the other two separated to gods knows where on the field, she’s Millicent’s to hold her own.
Pondering the status of the other two for even that split second is a rookie mistake. It distracts her from the canon fire that luckily misses her location but kicks up a small storm of dust to obscure her vision, the sound deafening her hearing to the scuttling of an insectile creature that surely would have struck her down if not for someone else killing it first.
Luche is revealed as her savior when the dust clears, Millicent’s lips curling into a relieved and thankful smile at the sight of a more familiar face. “Luche, thanks-“ she barely has time to offer her gratitude before another enemy lunges at her. The dodged spear strike lets her get in close, sinking her blade deep into a gap between the magitek’s plating and into the cybernetics beneath.
“I can’t leave you alone for one minute, can I?”
“Cut me some slack. No one called a notice of an approaching reinforcement squadron on this end. I wasn’t really expecting a unit of twenty troops to show up out of nowhere and I haven’t had the cover to work on taking out those vehicles. Viria’s been killed, Antonis and Demos fell back for medical help, and I have no idea where Nikos or Silas are.”

❛ i’m just saying, murder is an option. ❜ - from adri
@nightiingaled || 200 random dialogue prompts
-
The weather was beautiful - warm enough to shed outer layers without being overly hot and inducing sweat. A beautiful day and a far cry from the topic of discussion between the two women.
“Do not” Millicent brushed aside the thought with a laugh and reached over to land a gentle smack to the other woman’s arm in dissuasion. “We’re all used to it by now, water off a chocobo’s back. Really, it’s fine.” Insomnia natives made their feelings on Galahdian refugees abundantly clear. They called them all rats, leeches, who infested their beautiful city and wormed their way into the crown’s favor. The wall stood for many years - stalwart and unbreakable. There was no need for the kingsglaive’s formation, and it only funneled funds into needless expeditions to attempt to reclaim lost land and encouraged more immigrants to flock to their beautiful, pristine city.
(Conveniently ignoring the fact that a deployment to Galahd hadn’t happened in a few years at this point and acting as though Galahdians weren’t living in the dredges of insomnia.)
The refugees wanted to go back home just as much as the insomnians wanted them to. But Galahd was yet to be free, and prejudice was far better than Niflheim rule.
“Though I’m pretty sure Tredd and Libertus are one stray comment away from starting a brawl.”
The takeout - the restaurant’s self proclaimed “authentic exotic cuisine” - was bland, missing all the complex flavor profiles of true Galahkari dishes; the kick of spice, the intoxicating aroma. Millicent was well used to it by now - even Yamachan’s food was toned down for the palatability of the few city natives that visited the hole-in-the-wall place in the slums. “I’m surprised you haven’t gotten yourself kicked out of the guard for fighting anyone yet. You’re an immigrant too, right?” She wondered if Adrienne was spared the same treatment that the Galahdian refugees were because she didn’t look the role. If one didn’t know her, she could probably easily pass for an insomnian native unlike the galahdians who worked to keep their culture alive in the bustling urban cityscape. Perhaps Adrienne’s home was more similar to the crown city? Millicent couldn’t recall where the crownsguard had said she was from.

❜ ❛ this isn’t just about you. it’s about what’s best for all of us. ❜ ❛ you can never admit when you’re wrong! ❜ ❛ is this what you wanted? ❜ ❛ what are you doing out here by yourself? ❜ ❛ sorry to put you through that. i guess i owe you one now. ❜ ❛ the only time you talk to me is when you need something. ❜ ❛ i’m still learning. ❜ ❛ if you have something to say, spit it out. ❜ ❛ you… don’t like me very much, do you? ❜ ❛ i’m on your side. ❜ ❛ i risked my life for you! ❜ ❛ whatever you’re going to ask, the answer is no. ❜ ❛ you can stay with me. ❜ ❛ i just need time. ❜ ❛ please don’t do this, don’t act like you care. ❜ ❛ who the hell invited you? ❜ ❛ what? no witty remark? nothing clever to say? ❜ ❛ i just wanted to say i’m sorry. ❜ ❛ think of it as a compliment. ❜ ❛ do you ever stop being so serious and dull? ❜ ❛ it’s rare to see your kind around here. ❜ ❛ you remember me. that’s good. ❜ ❛ you’re a terrible flirt you know. ❜ ❛ are you kidding me? we’re not ‘fine’! ❜ ❛ right now i wish i was dead. ❜ ❛ i guess i should’ve told you. ❜ ❛ you’re not alone. i’m here. ❜ ❛ you’ve been so quiet. what’s on your mind? ❜ ❛ knowledge is power. ❜ ❛ you scared me. ❜ ❛ well, what’s so strange about that? ❜ ❛ don’t look at me like that. ❜ ❛ i want to be there when you get what’s coming to you. ❜ ❛ just who do you think you are? ❜ ❛ you look… amazing. ❜ ❛ we’re safe, aren’t we? ❜ ❛ you know, i really hoped i’d never see this place again. ❜ ❛ don’t touch me. get away from me. ❜ ❛ i thought you’d like this. ❜ ❛ it’s too dark, i can’t see anything. ❜ ❛ what’s that smug look for? ❜ ❛ why do you hate me? ❜ ❛ i can’t even trust myself anymore. ❜ ❛ i was making sure you weren’t dead, since you never called. ❜ ❛ you look awful. what happened? ❜ ❛ are you here to kill me? ❜ ❛ you know you aren’t allowed in here, right? ❜ ❛ was that a friend of yours? ❜ ❛ two years later and you haven’t changed. ❜ ❛ you look like you just saw a ghost. ❜ ❛ nobody tells me what to do. ❜ ❛ you’re too scared to do it, aren’t you? ❜ ❛ come on. it can’t be that bad. ❜ ❛ i hope to repay your kindness someday. ❜ ❛ just let me do this for you. ❜ ❛ why were they coming after you? ❜ ❛ how many people have you killed? how many? ❜ ❛ how much do you value your life? ❜ ❛ you don’t know when to give up, do you? ❜ ❛ don’t lie to me. ❜ ❛ i’m not sober enough to talk about this. ❜ ❛ have a drink with me. ❜

Never did Millicent think she would be sitting with the high commander of the Niflheim army and crown prince- no, he was the king now - of Tenebrae, always sure they would be on opposite sides of a war she believed she wouldn’t see the end of. Or at least a not a happy end. But the fall of the world, the seeming end of days, had brought together people from all walks of life. Those at the ends of the world all convened together to stand against the darkness that swallowed all. And so the glaive found herself sat next to the man at the Leville’s empty bar in the heart of humanity’s last large stronghold against the daemons that now ruled Eos, conversing with someone who once helped to lead an army that had slaughtered many of her brothers and sisters.
But how different were they actually? Both victims to Niflheim in similar ways. Innocents of subjugated lands forced to battle for other kingdoms who cared not for their homes.
“Wine? Yeah, I got it. You have any specific brand you like or something?” The woman circled around the counter where they had settled themselves. It was empty that “night” with even the barkeep absent. Most people tried to keep some sense of schedule to keep from going crazy, so at early hours like this the place made for a good location to go for some solitude. “I can’t say if they have any nice vintages befitting a prince.” Most alcohol was heavily rationed to avoid misuse by those looking to drown their sorrows when reality became too heavy. The place and alcohol were usually securely locked up, but her seniority as an original glaive pre-fall gave her a bit of leeway.
Her mind wandered to better days as she scanned over the dark bottles, checking the labels for dates. “Nyx was always the best when it came to alcohol” she wondered if the two had ever met. Perhaps during the evening of the 15th of May, the night before the day insomnia fell? Maybe sometime during the treaty signing itself or the chaos that befell afterwards? From what Libertus had told her, Nyx was the one who’d gotten the princess to safety, so perhaps the prince and glaive had crossed paths at some point.
The wine slowly burbled as she poured it, her mind wandering to better times at the sight, old memories of a location likely nothing more than rubble these days. “He and Libertus ran a bar back in Galahd before Niflheim overtook everything. Lib was in charge of the food while Nyx tended the bar” Millicent set the glass down in front of Ravus, fingers on the base and giving the liquid a quick swirl in the glass like she remembered her friend doing. Helped to aerate the wine or something? Enhance the flavor or scent? She couldn’t remember. “I helped out in the kitchen during tournament nights when it would get swamped, so I can’t say if that’s the best choice of the selection here.” She chose her usual poison: a beer. A Lucian based brand, one Yama often had as Galahdian brands became practically impossible to get post occupation. She couldn’t even remember the taste anymore it had been so long.

❞ ❝ no wine is half so intoxicating as your beauty. ❞ ❝ why should i beg for what is owed me? ❞ ❝ a lord may love the men he commands, but he cannot be a friend to them. ❞ ❝ let them try and trouble us, we’ll show them what we’re made of. ❞ ❝ a leader should be feared, by friend and foe alike. if men think me cruel, so much the better. ❞ ❝ the enemy of my friend is my enemy. ❞ ❝ a book can be as dangerous as a sword in the right hands. ❞ ❝ i am an old man, grown weary of this world and its treacheries. ❞ ❝ these are desperate days, and like to grow more desperate. ❞ ❝ we need to find shelter before nightfall. ❞ ❝ there are footsteps behind us. we are being followed. ❞ ❝ this is no common fog. it stinks of sorcery. ❞ ❝ i am glad you came to me. it is good to see you again, my friend. ❞ ❝ the man who does nothing also takes a risk. ❞ ❝ the women are the strong ones. ❞ ❝ afraid, are you? i would be if i were you. ❞ ❝ tell me a tale. some tale of valor with a happy ending. ❞ ❝ i’ll have a cup of wine as well. to clear my head. ❞ ❝ we may lose our heads, it’s true…but what if we prevail? ❞ ❝ keep your swords sharp. we’ll have us a real fight soon. ❞ ❝ this is going to end badly. ❞ ❝ what are you doing here? how did you get past my guards? ❞ ❝ it is so hard. to be strong. i don’t always know what i should do. ❞ ❝ let us instead speak of love, of dreams and desire. ❞ ❝ you wound me, wandering off like this. have you grown tired of my hospitality so soon? ❞ ❝ with this sword i defend my subjects and destroy those who menace them. ❞ ❝ it is too late for such misgivings. you made your choice. ❞ ❝ in times as confused as these, even men of honor must wonder where their duty lies. ❞ ❝ why? what did i ever do to you? ❞ ❝ we must be certain that we do not choose the losing side. ❞ ❝ dream sweet dreams. there are no monsters here. ❞ ❝ i know who you are. i know what you are. ❞ ❝ a little honest loathing might be refreshing, like a tart wine after too much sweet. ❞ ❝ a bloody sword is a beautiful thing. ❞ ❝ a ruler belongs to their people, not to themself. ❞ ❝ if the ones i killed come haunt me, i will kill them all again. ❞ ❝ you shine so brightly, you will blind every man who dares look upon you. ❞ ❝ a fair bargain leaves both sides unhappy, i’ve heard it said. ❞ ❝ there’s blood on your hands, aye, same as mine. ❞ ❝ i have done wicked things, i know, but i could not bear for you to hate me. ❞ ❝ it is good to see you smiling again. ❞ ❝ i have doubts enough without you throwing oil on the fire of my fear. ❞ ❝ blood pays for blood, a life for a life. ❞ ❝ go home, if that is what you want. i am staying. ❞ ❝ a man’d think there’s no trust between us. ❞ ❝ i would choose freedom over comfort every time. ❞ ❝ you are even lovelier than i was told. ❞ ❝ stay. i do not wish to be alone. ❞ ❝ treachery on treachery. is there no end to it? ❞ ❝ dreams and prophecies. why must they always be in riddles? ❞ ❝ one wrong word, and this could turn to blood in half a heartbeat. ❞ ❝ you lie. i can see the truth in your eyes. ❞ ❝ throw down your steel and stand aside, and no harm need come to you. ❞ ❝ you are supposed to be my friend. why must you mock my hopes? ❞ ❝ it is better to die with honor than to live without it. ❞ ❝ it does no good to brood on lost battles and roads not taken. ❞ ❝ i see you are deaf to sense. ❞ ❝ you are no better than me. we’re just the same. ❞ ❝ a man should never draw his sword unless he means to use it. ❞ ❝ you kill men for the wrongs they have done, not the wrongs that they may do someday. ❞ ❝ close your eyes. close your ears. turn away. you do not need to see this. ❞ ❝ the sooner we are gone from this place, the better. ❞ ❝ i am sorry my actions have displeased you. i did as i thought best. ❞ ❝ you do not need to trust a man to use him. ❞ ❝ if you cannot do this thing, you need only say so. there is no shame in that. ❞ ❝ never wound a foe when you can kill him. dead men don’t claim vengeance. ❞ ❝ this is what i wanted, what i worked for. so why does it taste so much like defeat? ❞ ❝ honest men should never need to hide their faces. ❞ ❝ i am not the trusting fool you take me for. ❞ ❝ men’s lives have meaning, not their deaths. ❞ ❝ he’s dead. he won’t bite. ❞ ❝ if this is the price for peace, i pay it willingly. ❞ ❝ it makes me wonder whose side you are on. ❞ ❝ dreams and prophecies. why must they always be in riddles? ❞ ❝ i will not say that you are welcome. nor will i deny that i have hoped that you might come. ❞ ❝ you have the eyes of a wolf and a taste for blood. ❞ ❝ men are mad and gods are madder. ❞ ❝ one war ends, another begins. there is always someone fighting someone somewhere. ❞ ❝ not all risks lead to ruin. ❞ ❝ is there some place with fewer eyes and ears? ❞ ❝ i need you now as i have never needed you before. ❞ ❝ tell me, is there any fight left in you? ❞ ❝ it was the wind that you heard screaming. ❞ ❝ crying? i was not crying. why would i cry? ❞ ❝ are you some butcher of the battlefield, hacking down every man who stands in your way? ❞ ❝ rain. a storm is coming. ❞ ❝ that was simple. simpler than i dared hope. simpler than it should have been. ❞ ❝ see that you do not speak of this. i’ll not have this tale spread. ❞ ❝ how could i be so blind for so long? ❞ ❝ you had a bad dream, that was all. ❞ ❝ are you prepared to defend that boast with sword or lance? ❞ ❝ i will do it. i said i would. i will. ❞ ❝ think that. believe that. tell yourself it’s true. ❞ ❝ you have more enemies than you know. ❞ ❝ i have no heart. i only have a hole. ❞ ❝ it has been too long since i’ve killed a man. ❞ ❝ words are wind. words cannot harm me. ❞ ❝ have you forgotten who i am? ❞ ❝ too many good men died that day. ❞ ❝ it is so good to see your face, your sweet face. ❞ ❝ it is still not too late to abandon this folly. ❞ ❝ i will not stay here to be insulted. ❞
