CoFIRED’s event, titled “Drop the I-Word,” addressed the use of the word “illegal” to refer to undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. Speaking to an audience of over 50 students and other community members in Collis Common Ground, CoFIRED leaders and supporters said they seek to eliminate the use of the word both at the College and nationwide.

Díaz’s address also represents a culminating event of the Office of Pluralism and Leadership’s (OPAL) “A Week of Community” this week. President Barack Obama's executive order allowing the children of illegal immigrants to defer their deportation for two years went into effect Aug. 15, due in large part to the efforts of Daniela Pelaez '16, a Miami resident who moved to the United States with her parents illegally when she was four years old, according to Nera Shefer, Pelaez's immigration attorney and an advocate for undocumented youth.

Drawing on personal experience and a "strategic" viewpoint, College President Jim Yong Kim voiced "strong support" for the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act in a letter addressed to Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. on Monday, Kim said in an interview with The Dartmouth.

Salas was one of 12 students who planned a 36-hour hunger strike to raise awareness and elicit a more vocal response from the College administration for the DREAM Act, he said. Organizers called off the strike which was scheduled to end on Tuesday morning at around 5:30 p.m. on Monday after College President Jim Yong Kim's Chief of Staff David Spalding sent an e-mail to organizer Irvin Gomez '14 assuring the students that Kim would make his already existing support for the Act more clear.

NEWS: LALACS program finalized at meeting “Dartmouth’s only temporary academic program, the Latin American, Latino and Caribbean Studies program, became permanent Monday after a vote during a quarterly faculty meeting. Better known as LALACS, it has existed for 13 years but did not officially shed its temporary status until yesterday.”
