so here's my take on something no one asked for my opinion on: vampires do not need circulation for sex or for brain function or to avoid blood pooling in their lower bodies or for any other purpose. vampires do not need an explicable bodily process for how they generate fluids other than blood in order to cry, spit, sweat, etc onscreen. vampires do not need a process for excreting the blood they feed on.

like, if you just enjoy speculative biology and want to come up with a vampire design that explains how they function then that's awesome, you guys are cool as hell. but other authors/artists that create biologically-unrealistic vampires are not doing that because they don't know enough about science to understand that living creatures need to excrete waste. like, come on.

most vampires are anatomically unrealistic because most vampire stories are not about anatomy, you know? vampires drink blood because they steal and consume human life. vampires can have sex (or can't have sex, depending on the story) because the author wants to talk about the relationship between sex and death. vampires have hypnotic/mind control powers because they represent anxiety regarding power or bodily autonomy. vampires can turn into animals because the Other is often animalistic and wild. these reasons among other reasons, of course. i just don't think it's a plot hole for these tropes to lack a biological explanation. i think that in many cases, the story would be weaker if there was such an explanation.

I like to think that, since werewolves are said to transform under the light of the full moon, vampire spawn turn on the night of a new moon. It doesn’t matter when they are bitten, their captor will take their lifeless body and hide it away, away from the light and away from anyone who might seek to end their hunts before they even begin; and when the new moon arises, well, some would describe the scene akin to a rapture of sorts. The night is at its darkest, not a sliver of moonlight to be shed, and suddenly the lifeless live again. A hoard of new vampire spawn flood the streets, the forests, anywhere they get even the faintest whiff of fresh blood, and they are hungry.

hey, biting correctly can be tricky to master! and some vampires don’t have a relationship with their sire where they feel comfortable asking for advice. when i was turned, my sire was my former master and it took awhile to feel like i could talk to her freely. plus, most fledglings are abandoned by their sires these days. i think it’s great that these babybats have a place to figure these things out.

he’s having trouble sucking enough blood from the wound, which is something most fledglings struggle with tbh.

tip to all the babybats: if you feel you’re not getting enough blood you probably aren’t sucking hard enough. you gotta really work at it. it takes time to build up the muscles to drain someone within minutes. and if you really want to puncture an artery go right ahead, just prepare for things to get messy haha (and don’t expect your victim to live through it)

another tip: bite the chest when starting out. you can move on to the neck once you’ve gotten a hang of that. and i wouldn’t recommend the wrist or thigh as a convenient bite

No matter how high up you live, vampires can still get you.

This is a small picture, about 14×14 cm, but it's not like I can't get a more detailed view of the city even at this size; it's that I didn't want to - I wanted to express the city as the rivers of lights that are the roads, as heights and depths, and the fact that even though it's night, it's never dark and it's never quiet. (Cities are difficult for me to handle, in part for this reason.) These are the things that someone inhuman would understand of a city; someone who doesn't know what a bank is, or a fast-food restaurant, or a supermarket; someone who sees it as a landscape to traverse.
