Italian buildings are some of my favourite styles of architecture. I just love the quirky, rustic feel of them.

A couple sketches from Budapest. Not the typical buildings, but I like drawing the less obvious sights.

One of Gaudi's masterpieces. La Sagrada Familia, absolutely breathtaking inside and out. (Also very intimidating)

I have also been lucky enough to visit my friend in Barcelona this summer. The city alone is incredible, but then you also have Gaudi's incredible work... more photos to follow.

I recently took a trip to Budapest, Hungary. I found the architecture fascinating and so extravagant.

Unit X - Final Reflection
As the project has come to an end I have reflected on all the different things that I have learnt from Unit X. I have thought about the things I’m pleased with and aspects that could have been better in different circumstances. Overall I have found working in a group challenging at times. I have been to every single group meeting, tutorial and activity (that I was supposed to attend). I felt that at times the group morale would drop which made it difficult to create some positivity in the group. I also tried to allocate jobs to people as I think sometimes we spent too long thinking about what to do rather than just doing it. I have enjoyed working in a group at times as well as its interesting to see how people think about things so differently.
Our exhibition was as successful as it could have been, as I feel that the space we were allocated hugely affected how we displayed our work. We had a lot of really creative ideas but when we went to see our space at the bookshop we were really overwhelmed and disappointed, as our much stronger ideas had to be disregarded because they wouldn’t have worked in the space. We did the best we could with the space and materials that we had, and by that point in the project we didn’t have enough time to produce anything really extravagant so I am proud in the sense that we worked well with what we had. Our idea was simple so we just had to keep it simple when we displayed it, as we didn’t have the right space or a good amount of time to produce any of our more complicated ideas. For example we had thought about projecting the film onto mirrors to create interesting effects, but the space we got was far too light and there wasn’t enough projectors to go around. It is a shame but some circumstances can’t be helped.
Most of the time the dynamics of the group worked really well. We all had ideas that complimented each other and thought along the same lines however in the last few weeks there were some disagreements and clashes. Some people couldn’t come in for different reasons which made it difficult to create some structure to our time. The group also faintly split into two as well, I think that this was purely because eight was too many people in one group. In the first three weeks when we were in groups with students from 3D Design I really enjoyed the collaboration as it was interesting to see the different ways in which they work and think. I felt that I would think more literally whereas they would have quite abstract and 3-Dimensional ideas. By mixing with different people from different courses and with a range of talents has been really enjoyable and therefore made Unit X a fabulous way to end the year.
Overall I have enjoyed Unit X as it has been challenging in a good way, to work with other people and step outside of my comfort zone. I’m proud of how I have taken on this project, as I do feel that I had taken on one of the bigger contributing roles in the group. However I do feel that this isn’t my strongest project, I think lots of different aspects have contributed to this; maybe if I had done this project on my own or with less people in my group I could have done a lot better. Furthermore the space in which we had to display the exhibition also didn’t let us explore our creativity enough, as I said before it was very limiting and uninspiring. Another aspect that I feel has affected my capability, was the fact that I would come up with ideas that people would be slightly negative about. Although this is all part of working in a group. However if some of these circumstances were different I know I could have done a lot better. But all in all I am really pleased with our concept and the things we made, like the books, the Instagram page and the film. The way it all came together at the exhibition has been bothering me, but I can learn from everything that has happened in this project and improve on these things in my future projects.

Unit X - Post 4
1st-5th May
At the start of this week I added the photographs that we took to represent ‘clues’ of the walk, to the Instagram page. We were all really pleased with the page, as it looked really professional. And it does what we wanted it to do which is to show people who want to go on the Mirror Walk, each location in a very ambiguous way making people more curious. On Tuesday Molly and I put together the book on InDesign, that consisted of our photos in black and white and five us did some drawings of each location. Then on Wednesday we printed the book out ready to be bound together on Thursday morning by some of the others.
Also on Wednesday five of us went back to the exhibition space, to properly plan exactly what we were going to do now that we knew which space we had been allocated. We sat there for about two hours going back and fourth on our ideas, as I think that we were overwhelmed about how big out space was. Eventually we decided that we were going to use both of the bookshelves that sit opposite each other. The plan below shows how we will use the shelves. We will have photos that are reflected in the mirror on the shelf opposite, therefore reflecting the pictures on the Instagram page. We will also have two iPads to display the film and the Instagram page, along with our book.
On Thursday we had our final group tutorial, in which it was suggested that we perhaps make another book to go on each shelf. Our lecturers also thought that we should add more photographs to our Instagram page. As this would ruin the order of how we wanted the pictures on Instagram, Minty had to start from scratch and add more behind the scenes photos of us to then have the ‘clues’ last. The page still looks really professional, and better than it was before. On Friday Ella and I helped the girls doing the film get the rest of their shots that they needed so that they could finish editing.
8th-10th May
On Monday we decided to go ahead and make another book as it would look better to have two. Molly and I went to print the book again and gave it to the other to bind, they also embossed the books and we are all really happy with them they look very professional and show the journey you take. We also managed to get everything else done, we printed the photos off and stuck them to some foam board ready for the exhibition. Everything was all ready for Wednesday.
On Wednesday we went to to bookshop to put together our installation. This proved difficult as the shop was still open to the public we had to work around them. We also weren't allowed to move books off the shelves, so we had to put together the rest of the installation just before the private show. This was inconvenient but these things happen. Overall I am pleased with how the exhibition turned out (more to follow about the exhibition).

Unit X - Post 3
24th-28th April
After being off for Easter we organised to meet up on the Monday morning, to catch up and try to make our ideas more concrete. However only half of the group showed up, so this did make things quite difficult. The main thing that we got from meeting up was that we decided on the locations for the mirror walk. As only half of us showed up however I created a timetable that allocated everyone in the group jobs, half of the group were allocated to create the film and the other half to focus on the Instagram page and the exhibition. On Tuesday we decided to go out and take photographs of the locations, including the Principal Hotel and the Town hall. Overall there are six locations that are apart of the Mirror Walk, that take people on a tour of a handful of the beautiful buildings that represent Manchester’s fabulous architecture.
Once we finally came together as most of the group, we were still struggling with how we wanted our idea to look. We came up with many different ways of showing the Mirror Walk, however after a tutorial on Thursday our lecturers were more enthusiastic about certain ideas rather than others. One of the main ideas and piece in our project is our Instagram page (@themirrorwalk). So at the end of the week four of us went out to take the pictures, that give people ‘clues’ to where the mirrors are located around the city. The pictures consisted of one person holding up a photograph of the next location, that we had taken on Tuesday. One person held the mirror in front of the current location. I then edited these photographs on Photoshop to make them black and white, as the theme of our project is primarily black and white. We also had the idea of creating a book to go alongside the Instagram page, which was an ambiguous way of showing the order of the trail.
During this week three of us visited the bookshop where our exhibition is going to be held. Chapter One Books, is located in the Northern Quarter in Manchester. The interiors of the shop have a very vintage and rustic feel to it which personally I find very satisfying to look at. We went to try to work out where we would want to display our work, which was difficult as we still didn't know exactly how we were going to display it. We just knew that we would have the film, an iPad to show the Instagram page, a book and we wanted to display our photographs in an interesting way.
Overall I think that this week was reasonably successful however it would have been much easier and better planned if more people had come in to start with. We got to where we needed to get at the end of the week I feel, but it could have been better planned as we did have a lot of obstacles in the road.

Unit X - Post 2
20th-24th March
At the start of this week we were put into groups of three, two interior design students and one 3D student, this was a great opportunity to talk to different people. Our task was to teach each other one of our skills. This could be any skill from baking to ballet. I taught the people in my group how I meditate, as I often meditate when I’m feeling stressed or anxious.
They showed me how to cut glass and reupholster furniture. I found this activity fun and it was good to interact with people I am not used to working with, however I do feel that my time could have been spent better starting the brief for our project.
On thursday we were finally given the brief and put into bigger groups, that consisted of just interior design students. Although most of our group wasn’t there, the three of us that were started brainstorming some ideas.
27th-31st March
On monday I met up with my group and we discussed ideas for the brief. We were all on a similar page, and liked the idea of mirrors, a hidden trail and creating curiosity. We bought a piece of mirror and cut it into different sizes, then took it around the city and photographed it in different places. We also created an Instagram page and added some of these photos to it, we didn’t want to add too many as we wanted to keep it ambiguous.
After our group tutorial on Tuesday we knew that we wanted to create a trail of mirrors showing people the main places of interest in Manchester, however we knew that our idea was still too vague and needed developing. (See pic)
On Wednesday we worked on our presentation for Thursday. There was some tension as not everyone turned up however we managed to get it done and worked out who would say what on Thursday.
Overall our presentation went well, however our general feedback was that we need to develop our ideas further and think about it in more detail. Also how we would present it at the exhibition? We already knew this was where we were struggling and will sort out a more definitive idea.

Brainstorm of our ideas.

Unit X - Post 1
6th-10th March
The past week we have been sorted into groups that consisted of four people from Interior Design and two people from 3D Design. I have found working in a group quite challenging at times but also enjoyable.
I think that in group activities people always slip into the roles they are comfortable with, so some end up doing more than others. I feel that I contributed a lot to the group, as we were a group of six we ended up going off in pairs with different tasks to bring together at the end. In my pair we were in charge of creating the map on photoshop, in an illustrative style. This ended up creating the majority of the piece, we then added the wire street names; which the girls from 3D produced.
The outcome of our piece I feel was different to everyone else, as most groups had built up layers of buildings. Whereas ours was more 2D and illustrative. However I also think it could have been better, with more 3D ideas and if we had planned our time better. I was really impressed by the group that had made their piece of the map out of styrofoam. Overall I really enjoyed this week as it was a lot different from what I am used to.
13th-17th March
This week has been primarily focused on drawing, and the different ways to draw. I have really enjoyed exploring different ways to free up my drawings, and using different materials.
On Monday I attended a session about drawing, and got shown the different techniques to prepare us for urban sketching on Tuesday. After the tour around Ancoats, the first industrial city in the world, we went urban sketching in Manchester. I enjoyed urban sketching as it was good to get out and do something different, also to have the opportunity to practice my drawing skills.
On Thursday morning, I attended a 3D workshop. We brought in different materials, and made different pieces of work to represent 'our journey to uni’ and to represent Manchester. The workshop was obviously intending to show us how we can draw with many different materials. Although I didn’t find this workshop very helpful as I have done this sort of thing in the past. On the whole this week was enjoyable, however it has also been frustrating as I want to start the working on the brief.
