Summary: It's the 73rd Hunger Games. Johanna realizes a couple of things about Effie.

The year leading up to the 73rd Hunger Games was surprising. I found myself going to the Capitol many times to meet up with Finnick for some extravagant parties. Finnick wasn’t there exactly by choice, of course, and I think he felt alone. Annie avoids the Capitol at all costs, and with good reason, and I felt alone, too. There isn’t much in District 7 for me anymore. Blight is a good person, and we talk sometimes. But he has a family, a wife, and a little boy to take care of.

I cross paths with Effie a few times during my stays at the Capitol. She was still sweet and attentive towards me, but there has been tension between us ever since my little scene with Cashmere. She is more contained, like she’s wearing a mask around me. She has clearly taken a step back. Maybe she didn’t approve of two women dancing together, but it didn’t really match with either Effie’s personality, from what I knew of her, or the whole lifestyle of the Capitol. While in the districts, we would’ve probably received dirty looks, here in the Capitol, nobody seemed to care, or at least they seemed entertained by it. The worst part is that I don’t hold it against the people in the districts. We are conditioned to live inside our little boxes. But here in the Capitol, where money is frivolous and we drink poison to throw up and eat more, two women dancing or kissing is just another one of the privileges of being rich.

Last year, at least I was 18; at least I had my fair share of work on my back; at least I knew how to use an axe. These kids are 12 and 13 years old. They are scared. I am scared. Not of dying like I was last year, but of watching these kids put their trust and hopes in my hands, only for the terrors of the arena to crush them. Every year. For the rest of my life.
